With your own face. How out of desperation we did what we needed to do

Recently, the “alternative” Minsk manufacturer of heavy trucks is rarely mentioned. However, this does not mean that nothing interesting is happening at the enterprise. Exactly the opposite. The plant not only works on its traditional models, but also develops new segments of trucks. Now they build both track cars and real SUVs here. And, perhaps most importantly, MAZ-MAN trucks now look neither like MAZ nor MAN.

They have finally found their own, recognizable “face”, as befits an independent automaker.

Just in case, let's briefly recall the story. The very first MAZ-MAN cars were, roughly speaking, a two-axle MAZ chassis with a MAN engine and a MAN F2000 cab. Naturally, there were much more differences, but outwardly everything looked exactly like that. In fact, the inscription “MAZ-MAN” on the radiator grill was the only way to distinguish them from the MAN F2000 saddle bars.

In 2005, deliveries of the MAN F2000 cab ceased. Due to the complete transition to a new model range, the German concern stopped the production of this cabin and sold the stamps to the Chinese Shaanxi corporation.

The Minsk joint venture was faced with the acute question of what to do next, which cabin to use. Negotiations were held on the supply of the MAN TGA cabin, but it did not work out.

Naturally, the cabin of the Minsk Automobile Plant turned out to be the most acceptable option in this situation. This is how the second generation MAZ-MAN trucks appeared. Only the engine remained from MAN, but outwardly it was the “spitting image” of MAZ, only with a different emblem. The nickname MAZ-MAZ quickly stuck to these cars.

The release of MAZ-MAZ was a temporary measure. And although it dragged on for several years, no one doubted that MAZ-MAN needed its own “face”. The new “face” was first shown to the general public at STT-2011.

The new carbon fiber front mask is the fruit of joint work between specialists from the joint venture MAZ-MAN and the design center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. It is produced at a specialized enterprise in Polotsk. Did it turn out well? Definitely good! The Mazovskaya cabin began to look completely different. MAZ-MAN cars are no longer similar to MAZs.

What about the rest of the components? Spars for frames are bought in China. Processing, drilling and painting are carried out in Minsk.

Cast brackets for frames are an original development of Minsk designers. The production of these parts is ordered externally, but the engineering is done in-house. The remaining components for the chassis are supplied by MAN, ZF and a number of other global companies.

MAZ-MAN has its own production of dump trucks. The range includes about two dozen platforms of various sizes. Let’s talk about dump trucks in more detail.

Dump truck MAZ-MAN 652036 (6x4) is one of the most popular products. This machine can conditionally be considered the brand’s basic dump truck.

There is an interesting special version of this dump truck with Finnish Arctic Machine high-speed snow plows. This equipment is successfully used by Belarusian road workers.

All-wheel drive off-road trucks are a relatively new area of ​​activity for JV MAZ-MAN CJSC. In 2012, a 26-ton dump truck was manufactured on Continental off-road tires.

Let's consider one of the most popular models today - MAZ-MAN 756539 with a 6x6 wheel arrangement. The MAN D2066LF01 engine with a power of 430 hp is installed here. - one of the most powerful engines for trucks of this class.

Thermal insulation of batteries is one of many options.

A Rockinger "no play" towing device on the optional rear frame cross member for the trailer is also an optional extra.

But the MAZ-MAN brand is now not only cars, but also trailers. The company's new product is a three-axle dump trailer MAZ-MAT 850001 with a lifting capacity of 21.5 tons. The trailer is equipped with an original dump platform of its own production with a capacity of 12 cubic meters. m.

In the class of dump trucks with a 6x4 wheel arrangement in 2015, the MAZ-MAN brand set a kind of record for permissible load capacity among domestic truck manufacturers.

The MAZ-MAN-752558 vehicle has a total weight of 41,000 kg with a curb weight of 14,500 kg. The permissible load capacity reaches 27 tons, the volume of the cargo platform is 16 cubic meters. m. In fact, the maximum load capacity has been achieved within the classical dimensions of a 6x4 dump truck.

Thus, MAZ-MAN brand products for dump truck transportation are a whole range of different solutions.

So what is a modern MAZ-MAN truck? Improved MAZ? Simplified MAN? Perhaps neither one nor the other. MAZ-MAN is an independent brand and its own know-how. It is curious that, starting as an assembly production of classic long-haul “long-haul” tractors, MAZ-MAN eventually became a manufacturer of non-standard trucks for specialized tasks. In terms of its ideology, MAZ-MAN is now much closer to companies like the Finnish Sisu than to MAZ or MAN.

Having started its activities last year, it has already managed to surpass many strong competitors in terms of the number of cars sold. The main factors here undoubtedly were the image of the parent company, combined with a price accessible to many carriers and the possibility of leasing. Taking into account the reduction in customs import duties on imported trucks, MAZ-MAN vehicles are 30% cheaper than their Western counterparts. In this situation, MAZ-MAN could become one of the most successful business projects of the end of the century, and it is possible that in the near future the largest European automakers will have to follow the example of MAN.

Tractor units with the MAN brand on the radiator trim are not uncommon on our roads. However, Russian carriers operating on long-distance flights are still little familiar with them. The fact is that road trains with such tractors found in Russia belong mainly to foreign companies.

For a long time, the machine-building concern MAN, widely known in Europe, did not strive to expand the geography of sales of its trucks. The situation has changed literally in recent years. To successfully penetrate the CIS market, the automobile division of the concern chose an original move: organizing the production of trucks in a joint venture with its long-time partner, the Minsk Automobile Plant, which has been installing MAN power units on its tractors to order for more than fifteen years. Before we introduce you to the design of the first-born joint venture, which has already been available to motor transport workers since the middle of last year, it is worth telling you a little about the MAN concern itself and its products.

Parent and subsidiary companies

The MAN concern (Mechanical Engineering Enterprises of Augsburg and Nuremberg) offers customers, in addition to trucks and buses, compressors and gearboxes, chemical reactors and printing machines, stationary engines and complex industrial plant projects. The concern's automotive division, MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG, produces trucks for various purposes with a gross weight from 6 to 48 tons with engine power from 75 to 600 hp, as well as buses and special vehicles, including military ones.

The high reputation of cars, distinguished by their reliability and durability, is based on the vast experience accumulated by the company’s specialists since 1915. It was then that the industrial production of trucks began in Nuremberg. In 1923, an automobile diesel engine with direct fuel injection was created, and a year later the first diesel truck appeared. Since 1951, MAN has produced turbocharged diesel engines. By 1954, the so-called M-process of diesel (wall-film mixture formation) was being developed, which made it possible to solve the problem of reducing noise and multi-fuel performance and determined the development of MAN engines for many years.

Currently, MAN owns two large Austrian companies Steyr and OAF, and has its own branches in Turkey, South Africa, Poland and Australia. In Hungary and Romania, MAN trucks are produced under license. The total production of trucks with a gross weight of more than 6.0 tons amounted to more than 50 thousand units in the 1997/98 financial year.

The latest action to expand the concern’s zone of influence is the organization of MAZ-MAN CJSC, which is a German enterprise on the territory of the Minsk Automobile Plant. In specially built workshops, cars are assembled using proprietary technology under the supervision of MAN specialists. Key positions at this enterprise are also occupied by German managers.

From Germany, Minsk receives cabs, power units - engines with gearboxes, wheels, pneumatic suspension elements, brake systems with ABS. The Minsk Plant supplies frames, front and rear axles, and power steering. The design of units produced by MAZ specifically for MAZ-MAN vehicles meets MAN requirements. All of them undergo strict input control and are distinguished by high quality workmanship.

MAZ-MAN produces two versions of the tractor with a 4 x 2 wheel arrangement: 370 and 400 hp, meeting the requirements of Euro-1 and Euro-2. In terms of noise and exhaust emissions, these vehicles comply with the international transport standards “Green Truck” (U) and “Specially Green Truck” (S), respectively. The first two hundred truck tractors produced since mid-1998 were received positively by road carriers. Let's take a closer look at their design.

"Truck of the Year" from Minsk

The design of the models produced by MAZ-MAN CJSC is based on the F 2000 series tractor, which won the honorary journalistic title “Truck of 1995”. A model that meets Euro-1 standards in accordance with Russian standards is designated as type 543265, and one that meets Euro-2 standards is designated as type 543268. Truck tractors are produced with a wheelbase of 3550 mm and are designed to operate as part of a road train with a total weight of up to 44,000 kg.

The vehicles are equipped with a high-capacity cabin with a width of 2440 mm, with two folding bunks, a roof spoiler and a sun visor over the windshield. The cabin tilts forward by 600 (using a manual, hydraulic or electro-hydraulic drive. The standard cabin frame suspension is 4-point, spring, pneumatic is available upon request.

The cabin is highly corrosion resistant: it is made of hot-dip galvanized steel. Among the additional measures that ensure high durability, we note cathodic painting by immersion and protection of hidden cavities with anti-corrosion agents. Ease of entry is facilitated by doors that open 900 degrees and step lighting that turns on at night. The driver's seat is equipped with Isringhausen air suspension, and there is a box for hand luggage between the seats. The microclimate is provided by the Eberspacher DZL CC heater.

Standard equipment includes: an electric tachometer for two drivers, an audio kit, an electric power window on the right door, a pneumatic signal, heated and electrically adjustable rear-view mirrors, a clothing compartment, and three-point seat belts. Options include installation of automatic air conditioning and 12 V/180 W sockets.

Despite the fact that the cab design has not changed for a long time, truck drivers are satisfied with both its internal volume and ergonomics. The instrument panel, upholstered in soft plastic, is quite modern. The devices do not glare in any light. Conveniently located switches, levers and pedals promote long-term work without fatigue. The steering wheel is adjustable in height and tilt.

The area above the windshield has a number of compartments for road maps and documents. There are holders for 1.5-litre bottles in the door pockets, but the real boot is located under the lower bunk. Its capacity is 400 liters.

Dashboard

When looking at the cabin, which is sometimes called a “locomotive booth” among drivers, attention is drawn to the two-section bumper with an elastic outer part adapted to mitigate the consequences of a collision between a car and a pedestrian. The inner part of the bumper is made rigid and is an underrun bar that prevents a passenger car from falling under the tractor in the event of a frontal collision.

The car is equipped with effective headlight optics: dual halogen headlights built into the bumper with an improved reflector shape make it possible to increase the intensity of the main beam by 1.7 times compared to traditional ones. High pressure jet washers are used to clean headlights. Small rectangular fog lights are built into the lower part of the bumper. Two niches for the passage of air to the radiator act as steps, allowing the driver to wipe the windshield or check the wiper mechanism.

Power units

MAZ-MAN CJSC installs a MAN D 2866 LF 21 diesel engine with a power of 370 hp on the tractor model 543265. (Euro-1), and for tractor 543268 diesel MAN D 2866 LF 20 (Euro-2), developing 400 hp. Both engines are in-line, six-cylinder with turbocharging and intercooler. With a working volume of 11.97 liters, they combine qualities such as high adaptability to changing loads, efficiency and durability. With proper and timely maintenance, these engines provide a mileage of 1 million km before major overhaul. High power parameters are achieved at low crankshaft speeds: 370 hp. at 2000 min-1; 400 hp at 1800–2000 min-1.

Driver's seat with air suspension

Electronic control of the fuel injection pump on the MAN D 2866 LF 20 engine made it possible to extremely reduce the speed corresponding to the maximum torque. Thus, the MAN D 2866 LF 21 engine develops a maximum torque of 1550 N•m at 1200 – 1400 min-1, and the peak torque curve of the MAN D 2866 LF 20 diesel engine, corresponding to 1730 N•m, is achieved in the speed range 1000 – 1500 min-1. Drivers call this engine especially “high-torque.” MAN diesel engines are equipped with a speed limiter corresponding to the kinematic speed of the road train, which is 85 km/h.

The power units are equipped with a single-plate clutch from F&S (Fichtel und Sachs) MFZ 430, with a hydraulic drive and pneumatic booster. The gearbox used is a 16-speed manual ZF 16S151. Cars are equipped with traction control and cruise control.

Chassis

The tractors are assembled with axles produced by the Minsk Automobile Plant, which have undergone strict selective selection and are designed for a maximum load of up to 7.5 tons for the front and 11.5 tons for the rear. In this case, the permissible load on the saddle is 10.675 tons. In the front axle, the pivot unit is equipped with needle bearings, and in the rear axle, a planetary wheel gear is used in combination with a forced-locking cross-axle differential. The final drive ratio is 3.97.

If the front suspension of the tractor is spring, then the rear axle rests on air springs purchased from WABCO. The air suspension is complemented by an automatic electronically controlled fifth wheel height control system (ECAS). The cars are equipped with Kronprinz rims 22.5 x 9.00 and tubeless Continental tires measuring 315/80 - 22.5.

The brake system complete with ABS for installation on tractors is supplied by WABCO. It is a dual-circuit pneumatic one with a heated air dryer. The wheel brakes are drum brakes. The engine brake is used as a retarder.

Adaptability to Russian operating conditions

Tests of MAZ-MAN CJSC vehicles carried out before the start of production showed their suitability for operation in Russian road and climatic conditions. The designers have provided a number of measures to make the tractors more efficient. Thus, the correspondence of the suspension characteristics (elastic elements and telescopic shock absorbers) is ensured by the experience of using similar elements on MAZ tractors. The fuel tank (capacity 500 l) is equipped with a heated fuel filter. In addition, an additional filter-water separator “SEPAR 20002” is built into the fuel supply system (optional: a heated water separator can be installed).

The absence of complex electronic systems in the vehicle, the simplicity of the tractor design and its high maintainability increase competitiveness in the Russian market. It is very important that service and warranty service, as well as all types of machine repairs, are carried out through a network of dealer service stations and the MAN service network in the CIS, as well as through a network of MAN service stations in Western Europe.

A little background. The creators of HUNT

ov are not new to the cargo market. Having been involved in the sale and operation of heavy machines in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug for many years, we gradually “grew up” to our own vision of the right machine. At the same time, the emphasis was placed on domestic equipment (import substitution will clearly not cease to be relevant in the coming years), but with high-quality units.

The tilting angle of the platform is 50°, Penta or Hyva hydraulic cylinders. Without heating the body, at local ordinary temperatures of -50°C in winter, it is impossible to work, so heating with exhaust gases provides not only the bottom, but also the front wall and rear pillars.

This is an example of an early example, the heating is still somewhat crude, but there are no complaints about its effectiveness. And the muffler is equipped with protection, and with branded symbols, which is rare for a domestic car.

MAZ-MAN built an all-terrain vehicle for James Bond

Yesterday, one Belarusian information portal reported interesting news: James Bond's car in the next film series could be... an all-terrain vehicle (more precisely, an all-terrain vehicle) BME-1015 produced by JV MAZ-MAN!

This all-terrain vehicle has been produced at the MAZ-MAN plant since 2014; to date, “more than 10 copies” have been made (quote from the response to our request). In fact, this is a much older project; they wanted to start making BME-1015 back in 2008, but the then economic crisis put a temporary end to this idea. Interestingly, the appearance of the all-terrain vehicle was created by Andrei Trofimchuk, known as the designer of the e-mobile. This was actually his first job for an existing automaker.

Andrey recalls: “In 2008, the first wave of the crisis hit MAZ-MAN hard, suddenly there was no money for a new project, the enterprise was in a dilapidated state. I was even underpaid for my work - but I’m not offended, it was difficult for everyone then.”

This is what the car was supposed to be like in Trofimchuk’s mind.

And this is what it has become.

It is clear that the developers tried to make the appearance friendlier, but this led to dissonance between the deliberately chopped body shapes and the design of the front end with its round headlights.

BME-1015 is built on Niva units (Lada 4x4); as an option, it can be equipped with an Italian diesel engine CMD GN 199AT. To increase cross-country ability, wheel gears and a propeller driven by an internal combustion engine are used. Ultra-low pressure tires are supplied by Belshina; they have the possibility of centralized inflation. The body is fiberglass.

Representatives of the Sohra Group, which sells Belarusian equipment around the world, spoke about the fact that the BME-1015 could become a James Bond car. It was by order of this company that one copy was assembled in a “sand-sheikh” design - with a luxury finish and appropriate coloring. This car will be taken to the construction exhibition The Big 5 Show, which opens on November 23 in Dubai. According to Sohra Group representative Dmitry Rakusov, the exhibition copy has already been purchased by one of the Arab sheikhs, who, of course, cannot be named. Rakusov also confirmed that BME-1015 will appear in a Bond film.

Our request to JV MAZ-MAN CJSC did not clarify anything: the distributor is conducting negotiations with Columbia Pictures, we are not in the know. A request to Sohra Group has so far remained unanswered. So to date there is no factual confirmation of this information.

It is known that the role of James Bond's car has long been a factor in product placement; a car manufacturer that wants to promote itself through the image of a super agent pays the film studio millions of dollars. It is impossible to imagine that a little-known Belarusian manufacturer with a production volume of 10 all-terrain vehicles per year is capable of incurring such costs. This doesn't make any sense. If we are talking about participating in filming, then obviously not as the main vehicle of agent 007, but in some short episode. But episodic roles in such film franchises are not cheap; these costs cannot be “recaptured” even if the production of BME-1015 is increased tenfold. The market for such cars is extremely narrow, they are not bought as show cars, they are a vehicle for swamps and tundra. The contract with the unnamed Arab sheikh, if it exists at all, is an accident; it is absurd to rely on sheikhs. By all indications, we are dealing with wishful thinking. And we will be happy to admit a mistake if the Belarusian all-terrain vehicle actually appears in a James Bond film.

But logic dictates that he won’t appear there after all.

Hitch with safety margin

Anti-icing agent distributor AM 9054 is equipped with a hydrostatic drive

Working equipment for road maintenance includes Arctic Machine removable high-speed plows, designed for high-performance snow removal from highways. For this purpose, two snow plows are installed on the dump truck: the front rotating, beveled blade AM 4600 HPD T2 with a blade width of 4600 mm is made of high-strength dense polyethylene and can be rotated relative to the axis by 42º in each direction. The side beveled blade AM SHJ 216 J with a working blade length of 4180 mm when rotated from 2 to 46º allows for cleaning at a width of 0 to 3.451 m. The use of a front plow and a side blade allows the MAZ-MAN 752559 dump truck to clear snow with a maximum clearing area of ​​up to 6.58 m, covering two lanes of traffic at once. The overlap of the front blade track with the side one is 0.42 m. It is important to note that the speed of the machine while clearing the road, depending on the conditions, occurs at speeds of 30, 50 or 80 km/h.

Equipment for treating the road surface with bulk or liquid reagents is mounted at the rear. The AM 9054 sand and salt spreader distributes anti-icing materials, the dry reagent storage hopper holds 9 m3 of materials, and the storage tanks for salt solutions have a volume of 5.4 m3. An electronically controlled distribution device accurately dispenses the dispersal of anti-icing agents in automatic mode.

Especially for winter, but if necessary...

At the end of winter, the joint venture produced a new version of a universal machine for road maintenance in the winter season. The new product, equipped with a set of snow removal and sand and salt distribution equipment from Arctic Machine (Finland), was transferred to the customer - the Belavtodor concern.

The cleaning area when working with both dumps is 6.58 m

The basis of the road vehicle was the serial MAZ-MAN 752559 dump truck with a 6x4 wheel arrangement. The permissible total weight of the chassis reaches 41 tons with a load capacity of 26.5 tons. The car is equipped with an in-line 6-cylinder turbodiesel MAN D2066LF44 with a power of 440 hp. (324 kW), delivering 2100 Nm of torque. The engine, which meets the requirements of the Euro 5 environmental standard, is combined with a 16-speed manual transmission ZF 16S2220TO and a power take-off for the hydraulic system of the working equipment.
