Toyota Town Ace: you can travel around the world with this one

Hi all!

Japanese cars of the late eighties and early nineties are famous for their reliability and durability. Even now there are plenty of these cars on sale: despite their age of 25-30 years, they still serve their owners well.

There are also those that are simply ideal for travel. We will talk about one of these cars.

Meet: Toyota Town Ace

History of Toyota Town Ace Truck

The Toyota Town Ace Truck, popular in the home market, is a classic Japanese truck that was designed by Toyota engineers together with specialists from Daihatsu.
At the same time, the development and production of the car is carried out exclusively by Daihatsu. The pickup truck with a load capacity of 750 kg was created on the basis of the Toyota Town Ace minivan. It first appeared on the automotive firmament of the Land of the Rising Sun back in 1985. The vehicle was intended exclusively for the home Japanese market. A change in appearance took place in 1990 and 1995.

In terms of appearance and technical and operational characteristics, the truck was excellent for urban use in Japanese cities. Due to its carrying capacity of 750 kg, it was mainly used for delivering products and other goods from warehouses to various retail chains. Thanks to all-wheel drive, the truck felt great on roads with fairly poor surfaces.

The maximum configuration version of the Toyota Town Ace Truck called “X Edition” has electric door locks, a painted bumper, combined door and seat upholstery, as well as electric windows.

Review of Toyota 1988 (1988)

I offer, due to the lack of reviews about such a car on this resource, my own, which I left on another site back in 2004.

“At the moment I have, albeit an old, but very practical, unpretentious and quite economical TOWN ACE bus, which at the time of purchase had as many as 209 thousand km, of which exactly half was on the roads of Norilsk. I was lucky that after my compatriot, the bus had only one owner, who took it for his loved one, exploited it without violence. The first, but quite firmly rooted ideas - a car for the family. In addition, you can use it as a truck, but only to a limited extent - unlike trade workers :) The interior of my bus is quite ascetic, which is due to its advanced age. Among the bells and whistles are two air conditioners, as well as two stoves; central locking on the side and rear doors; All seats are transformable, which is important when transporting large cargo.

First impressions when driving in the first snow - it’s a bit heavy on the rear wheel drive, but with the front wheel drive on - it’s beautiful! True, the dynamics suffer somewhat with all-wheel drive. In terms of cross-country ability, it’s natural that it lags behind the Niva, but it’s enough for me. I didn’t climb in outright mud, but I climbed quite a lot in snow. The diesel engine helps out, it rushes at low speeds without hesitation, the main thing is not to slip. In the city I also feel great in a bus, good visibility due to the high seating position, excellent maneuverability, throttle response, thanks to the turbine, which starts at 2200 rpm, allow you to be equal both in the flow and not to be the last one when starting from a traffic light. In general, this car is not for racing; its cruising speed outside the city is 90-100 km/h. Based on the quality of the road surface, this speed is more than enough.

Among the minuses, the following can be noted: the front heater, in cold weather, is not always enough to prevent the glass from being drawn in; an additional fan had to be installed; The music is original from Toyota, from “CAMRY” 1996. — according to the chips and fits into a regular place, as if made for this bus! True, there are only two speakers... in the front panel. Not enough, and the quality... in general, the criteria were not the same 16 years ago. Overall, I’m happy with this car. I will not recommend it to anyone, since everyone has different goals and objectives when purchasing a car. I just want to say that this is not my first Japanese car, so I don’t feel puppyish delight about it. At the same time, I can share a fair amount of confidence that car enthusiasts who do not have a heavy wallet, have 2 or more children, who want to travel around the country by road, as well as to nearby hunting/fishing grounds, will make the right choice towards TOYOTA TOWN ACE. Believe me, this bus is worth having in your garage.

In addition to my previous review, I would like to add the following. I am more and more convinced of the correct choice of car that meets the requirements and goals every day. But, in addition to praises, I consider it necessary to indicate the negative in reviews, because These reviews are necessary, first of all, for those who are just about to acquire this car model.

First: without additional insulation, the car is quite cold; at -40, both stoves cannot maintain a decent temperature until you carefully “wrap” the entire front part of the car. It is also necessary to check the tightness of the surfaces of the heater air intake to the car body (not to be confused with the flap that switches the external/interior air intake) behind the left headlight, which must be removed for this purpose. Be sure to install an additional windshield blower (or better yet, two in the corners).

I was in an accident (I avoided a serious collision - I drove into the back of a truck), about 0.5-1.0 meters of braking distance was missing in icy conditions... it’s good that it was shod with Japanese Dunlop Velcro. I had to drive it into the body shop. The minus was revealed immediately. The front of the car is not removable, it is part of the body (unlike, for example, the domestic “gazelle”), so for straightening I had to remove the windshield and cut off the entire panel... After repair and assembly, I started the car and discovered that the charge had disappeared (when you start the engine, it goes out only the engine pressure warning light, and the rest do not go out). The technicians decided that it was a “pill” on the generator that had flown out. We checked. The “tablet” (i.e. relay-regulator) on this model is remote, located under the panel on the left. The store offered an order for $200! I drove through the showdown. They offered 2 pieces, similar in appearance, but with a difference of one number in the marking. It turned out that I needed a “reverse polarity” relay regulator, i.e. released before 1990! I found this. I installed it, checked it - the result was the same. It turned out that the reason was a broken connector of the power wire of this relay, which extends directly from the battery (located behind the front of the battery niche). This is the so-called “gift” from the bodybuilders who disconnected the battery during welding work - they pulled a.b. from a niche, sparing no effort, it seems... But I learned the intricacies associated with repairing the electrical wiring on my bus... A manual for servicing my car offered in auto stores (town ice, master surf, etc. since 1985), intended, by the way , for auto repair shops and ordinary drivers, contains electrical circuits for TOWN LITE ACE and TOWN ACE, but only those manufactured since 1992. A useless book...almost. For the false radiator plastic insert between the fog lights, the online store asked for more than 3,000 rubles...only on order from Japan.

I am writing all this for those who want to take such an old car. I am pleased with it, despite such troubles.

Options

The Japanese Totota Town Ace Truck is powered by a 1.5-liter gasoline engine. This power plant is capable of producing 97 hp. The manufacturer offers this truck with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. In the case of four-wheel drive, a rigidly connected front axle and transfer gearbox were used. By the way, the latter had a lower range of gears. There was no center differential. To connect the all-wheel drive, the driver must independently turn the couplings to the required position. After that, he needs to press the 4WD button. It is noteworthy that switching could be done even while driving. The main requirement is that the wheels should not slip during shifting.

The power plant works in tandem with a manual or automatic transmission. Due to the lower gearing, the gear ratio was 2.6.

Due to the absence of a center differential, the vehicle's cross-country ability was significantly improved, but the likelihood of breakdowns and tire wear increased. Another significant drawback is increased fuel consumption. Most drivers used all-wheel drive on a bad road, and turned off all-wheel drive on a good road. Such manipulations were carried out to save fuel.

Indestructible transmission

Town Ice was equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed Aisin automatic transmission. The “automatic” here is a classic torque converter. Legendary in terms of indestructibility, it is not inferior to “mechanics” in reliability and service life. This is why cars with automatic transmission are often used for off-road driving.
