Cross-country ability of UAZ Hunter, Patriot and Loaf

Fans of off-road travel are always faced with the problem of choosing a reliable and passable vehicle from a large number of models on the market.

Among domestic manufacturers, the main representatives of this class are UAZ Hunter and Patriot. Both cars have high performance, quality and a relatively affordable price. To understand which is better – Hunter or Patriot, you need to compare them in more detail.

UAZ Hunter and UAZ Patriot.

Scope of application of UAZ vehicles

Both can be called off-road conquerors. These models are designed for off-road driving. Due to their technical characteristics, vehicles have increased cross-country ability.

First of all, SUVs are created for people who engage in active recreation, often go into nature and conquer off-road terrain. They are suitable for traveling in the most extreme conditions.

Conclusion

Without a UAZ, many simply cannot imagine a full-fledged active holiday. Only this car, at a low cost, can give the owner and his friends a lot of vivid impressions. In an UAZ you can get anywhere and, if it breaks down, you can fix it with a screwdriver, pliers and, sometimes, a sledgehammer right in the middle of the forest. Not every modern jeep, which is stuffed with electronics and other complex components, can boast of this. In the event of a failure of, say, the electronic engine control unit (“brains”), which the UAZ simply does not have, the car cannot be repaired on its own. Yes, modern SUVs are reliable, but this does not mean that they cannot break down in a place several tens, or even hundreds, of kilometers from the nearest populated area. If a UAZ driver with experience and straight hands takes care of the car (and that is the majority), then the reliability of his car will not raise any doubts.

Hunter and Patriot: similarities and differences

The models have a large number of similar parameters - engine, gearbox, design and approximately the same price. This is quite logical, because they are assembled on the same assembly line.

The main difference between these 2 cars is their positioning. Thus, the UAZ Hunter, as the name suggests, is intended primarily for lovers of hunting, fishing, or just off-road driving. This model is more ascetic and less comfortable.

The Patriot, in turn, in addition to traveling over rough terrain, is well suited for city life and for traveling on highways. The car itself is made more comfortable and has more additional options.

Happy anniversary, UAZ!

On November 24, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant celebrated its 75th anniversary. During this time, the company produced about 5 million cars of more than 250 modifications and exported them to 130 countries. Today, the UAZ model line includes more than 6 models and about a hundred of their modifications, including the UAZ PATRIOT and UAZ PICKUP, considered the flagships of the line, the UAZ HUNTER, the ageless successor of the “469”, and, of course, the “immortal” loaf”, which many remember as UAZ-452. By the way, the plant’s current production capacity is 105,000 cars per year.

But this time we will not talk about them, but about the history of the plant, or rather about one very interesting place where bright examples of equipment created at UAZ over its long life are collected. This place is the UKER garage, where historical, experimental and experimental cars are collected.

GAZ-69-68

The “garage” displays the last copy of the famous GAZik, released in December 1972. The GAZ-69-68 model, modernized in 1968, was distinguished by axles unified with the UAZ-469B family.

UAZ 3907 "Jaguar"

The successors of the GAZ cars, the 469th family, did not have a two-door version in their lineup. There is a more or less clear prospect of the appearance of such a machine in the 80s, with the development of the floating UAZ 3907 Jaguar. And although the car was practically brought to mass production, it never made it onto the assembly line. In the “garage” there is specimen No. 14, assembled in 1989.

UAZ 2931

Extended Hunter - UAZ 2931, equipped with a 16-valve ZMZ-409 engine with electronic injection, with a displacement of 2700 cm3

UAZ 3159 "Bars"

Prototype UAZ 3159 "Bars". An all-terrain vehicle with an extended base, an enlarged roof above the cargo compartment and... LOWERING side windows was created in 1996. As we know, a simpler version went into production.

UAZ 3170 "Simbir"

Of course, no matter how good the 469 is, neither it nor the Hunter should be left on the assembly line initially. The heir was to be a more modern family, which in the “civilian” version was to be called UAZ 3170 “Simbir”. Unfortunately, the only copy left as a memory...

UAZ 3172

The “army” version of the new family, which was supposed to replace the UAZ-469 (UAZ 3151) in the 90s, was called UAZ 3172 and was carried out as a “Wagon” theme. Gear axles, cross-axle differential locks and spring suspension of the front axles on a promising all-terrain vehicle - alas, can only be seen in a museum...

UAZ Patriot Concept

I think everyone is familiar with the UAZ Patriot family. But did you know that the curves of the roof at the stern could have a less “chopped” shape? A more “sporty” version is the UAZ Patriot Concept.

UAZ-450A

The UAZ-450A is in excellent condition. An extremely rare specimen, produced in the early 60s of the last century, can decorate any collection, but be kept in its homeland.

UAZ 27772

Whatever one may say, the “loaf” was (and is), to put it mildly, not the most comfortable “ambulance”. The plant understood this very well and prepared a completely different car to replace it - ASMP UAZ 27772 based on a promising minivan.

UAZ 3165 "Simba"

New for 2000 is an all-wheel drive minibus with a half-hood layout, UAZ 3165 “Simba”. Oh, what a car it could have been!

UAZ 3165M

In 2003, an updated version of Simba was shown - UAZ 3165M, which was based on UAZ Patriot units. And again a miracle did not happen...

And this is what the “luxury” version of the minivan looked like - alloy wheels, a little more buttons on the front panel and a different interior layout.

UAZ 2315-080

I think I won’t be mistaken that most of us associate the phrase “on-board UAZ” with the famous “tadpole” UAZ-451 and its followers. At best, some will remember the modern UAZ Cargo, with which the plant is trying to fill the niche of compact cargo all-terrain vehicles. However, back in the early 90s of the last century, the development of the onboard “469” was underway, embodied in the UAZ 2315-080 model. Alas, the series didn’t work out...

UAZ 39095

By the way, they also tried to modify the “tadpole” and to confirm this, a serial modification from 1996 with a sleeping place, UAZ 39095, is stored in the “garage”.

As you can see, many “exhibits” from the UKER garage have state registration and license plates. They can leave the plant territory freely, and participate in festive events - this is great. But, on the other hand, these cars, in fact, are not museum exhibits and can be sold to a third party and forever lost in the vastness of our vast country. The photo you see was taken in October 2009, and I would like to believe that by its anniversary, UAZ not only did not lose its unique collection, but also increased it.

Just a museum...

I hasten to reassure those who were surprised that historical equipment at UAZ is stored in some strange place - there is also a museum at the plant in the form in which it is customary to see it at other plants. A lot of photographs, various iconic objects and one single full-fledged exhibit - a GAZ-69AM produced in the early 1970s. And then, delivering it to the hall, which is located on the second floor of the administrative building, was another task, and if not for the persistence of the director of the museum, Alla Anatolyevna Moleva, the excursionists would still have to be content with only stories and photographs.

Happy holiday, hero of the day! Long years and successful models, UAZ!!!

A more detailed comparison of UAZ characteristics

The UAZ Hunter is quite simple to operate and maintain. This model is universal due to its technical characteristics, high cross-country ability, carrying capacity and capacity, and moderate fuel consumption.

The Patriot's body is made of solid metal. The model uses disc brakes with a ventilation system and anti-lock units from Bosch.

Additionally, additional upgrades include an anti-roll bar and a new, spider-mounted driveshaft at the rear.

Car exterior

UAZ Hunter has been produced for over 40 years. During this time, his appearance has undergone changes.

The Patriot has more rounded shapes. In comparison with the Hunter, it looks less rigid and military, but this did not affect the driving performance.

In addition, the design of the Patriot model allows the driver and passengers to easily remain clean, even if it is covered in mud up to the roof, while the Hunter cannot boast of such an opportunity.

Appearance of cars.

Interior

In both cars it is spacious and comfortable.

But there are still differences:

  1. Patriot is designed for long journeys. The car has a special sleeping place, the size of which is suitable for anyone. There is a place to store various little things. The cabin can accommodate a large family with pets and all their belongings; this is a great advantage of this car.
  2. With Hunter, the situation is the opposite: it is not designed for family trips. The interior is minimalistic, one might say spartan. There is everything you need, but nothing more. A lot of bare metal, a long distance from the pedals to the steering wheel, etc.

Car showrooms.

Trunk capacity

The Patriot's luggage compartment volume is much larger than that of the Hunter and is 1,200 liters as opposed to 210 liters. This parameter plays a big role in cars intended for travel.

Engine power

Specialists from the Zavolzhsky plant are already developing power units with a biofuel system. They will be available in 3 variations: a naturally aspirated engine with a maximum power of 145 hp, as well as 2 turbocharged engines of 150 and 170 hp.

The UAZ Hunter runs on both gasoline and diesel engines. The differences between them are insignificant.

The base unit for this model was the 4-cylinder ZMZ 409.10 with a volume of 2.7 liters. Engine power up to 128 hp equipped with a 16-valve mechanism and distributed fuel injection. Its consumption is up to 13 liters per 100 km.

UAZ Patriot cars are equipped with a 4-cylinder 4-stroke engine of the ZMZ 409.10 series. The valves are located at the top, and the cooling is liquid. The ignition system of this engine is microprocessor-based, distributed fuel injection.

UAZ transmission

The Hunter model, starting in 2022, is equipped with a Korean Dymos 5-speed manual transmission.

There are 2 transmission options available for the Patriot – a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Dynamics and fuel consumption

In terms of dynamic indicators, Hunter is inferior to Patriot. If the car speed exceeds 100 km/h, then vibrations and noise begin to increase, because it is designed to overcome road unevenness, and not drive quickly on asphalt. This model is also inferior in terms of acceleration, but it is more economical in consumption: on average 14 liters per 100 km.

The Patriot shows good results in comparison with many modern SUVs. This applies to both acceleration and stability at high speeds.

Patriot performs better than Hunter.

Car handling

The Hunter's cross-country ability has been increased to the maximum, but the stiff suspension and the same interior make you feel all the potholes and unevenness of the road. In this regard, the Patriot is softer and more comfortable.

The Hunter's wheelbase is smaller than that of its competitor and is 2380 mm, while its competitor measures 2760 mm. Meanwhile, their ground clearance is the same - 210 mm for both cars. These models use similar tires with ratings of 225/75 with a diameter of 16.

Dimensions of UAZ Patriot.

Summarizing the above, we can say that the Hunter is well suited for conquering off-road conditions, but for traveling on the highway it is better to choose the Patriot.

Passability in different conditions

UAZ Patriot is suitable for driving both on asphalt roads and beyond. The car has all-wheel drive and an anti-lock braking system.

The UAZ Hunter is a universal vehicle that adheres to the body geometry and wheel arrangement, allowing it to move in the most impassable places. However, the car's comfort is lower than that of its competitor.

Safety and crash texts

One of the main points of difference between the 2 models is their security systems.

UAZ Patriot 2022 and older is equipped with front airbags. In addition, the Airbag system includes an inflatable bag with a gas generator, a collision sensor and an indicator on the dashboard. Thanks to this, the driver of a car with a large mass will be able to steer out of a skid independently.

Hunter does not have these extras, so the driver should be more careful when driving on country roads.

Crash tests have proven that the passive safety system in the Patriot can reduce the likelihood of a fatal accident by a third.

Advantages and disadvantages of cars: final comparison

It is worth saying that both of them have characteristics that make them great for riding on rough terrain. The Patriot model continues to be refined to this day, making it more comfortable for long trips.

The built-in navigation and multimedia system, air conditioning, increased safety and comfort help this car become more popular every year.

The Hunter model is more ascetic, but is excellent for off-road travel - fields, forests and harsh snowy areas.
