General information

Agat walk-behind tractors are designed to perform various household tasks throughout the year in areas with a temperate climate: plowing and hilling soil, harvesting potatoes and other root crops, mowing grass, clearing snow debris, garbage collection, transporting goods over short distances (using towed semi-trailers ).

Video review of the AGAT walk-behind tractor:

Such a variety of work performed is ensured by the ability to use various attachments on one device.

Experts note that Agat equipment is reliable, easy to operate and maintain. Equipped with petrol and diesel engines.

User manual

Each walk-behind tractor must include an instruction manual, which must be carefully studied before the first start-up of the unit. The instructions contain a detailed description:

  • Design and assembly of the “Agat” walk-behind tractor.
  • Instructions for the first start-up (break-in).
  • Technical characteristics of this model.
  • Maintenance in detail (changing the oil in the walk-behind tractor, inspection, lubrication, etc.).
  • List of possible breakdowns and ways to eliminate them.
  • Safety requirements when working with a self-propelled motorized device.

Particular attention should be paid to running in the Agat walk-behind tractor with the Lifan engine. Run-in is also called running-in; at this time, all moving parts of the engine are ground in; the unit must operate under light loads for 25 hours from the moment of first start-up.

The instructions for the gearbox recommend using TM-5-18 and TAD-17I oils.

More detailed instructions regarding break-in are described in the operating instructions. The “faults” section lists not only the breakdowns that occur, but also their causes.

The rotary cutters slowed down their rotation or began to move jerkily:

  • earth has stuck to the rotors (just clean the cutters and everything will work);
  • the rotors have collided with stones (check the integrity of the working parts, remove the obstacle);
  • The V-belt drive belt is slipping (replacing the belt will help).

The cutters have stopped rotating, although the engine is running and the clutch is engaged:

  • clutch cable breaks (cable replacement);
  • The V-belt has come off the pulley (put the belt on);
  • V-belts have broken (replace belts).

Design Features

Structurally, the mini-equipment of this brand is a classic middle-class walk-behind tractor. It has a power take-off pulley for working with additional tools, as well as cutters. The difference from a conventional walk-behind tractor is that all work with additional equipment occurs on the rear trailer bracket.

Main elements of the unit:

A distinctive feature of Agat walk-behind tractors is their ease of operation. The center of gravity, located below the operator's knees, allows effortless operation of the mechanism and ensures its stability.

In order to ensure the possibility of transportation in the trunk of a car and compact storage, a collapsible design is provided. Wheels and control arms can be easily removed

According to owner reviews:

  • The gearbox does not have an oil dipstick. To determine the oil level, you need to drain it, and you can find out how much to add only when the oil begins to overflow over the edge of the oil filler hole of the gearbox;
  • oil leaks;
  • not very high quality cutters, often have to be sharpened;
  • strong vibration of the engine is transmitted to the control levers, which is why your hands quickly get tired.

Characteristics and scope

All Agat walk-behind tractors presented on the domestic market have a number of similar technical parameters:

  • overall dimensions – 1510x620x1335 mm;
  • cutter diameter – 310 mm;
  • wheel diameter – 390-410 mm;
  • tires – pneumatic;
  • ground clearance – 110-120 mm;
  • maximum speed – 7.6 km/h.

Various modifications of the units have a common area of application: cultivation and subsequent grinding of soil, weeding, mixing fertilizers and soil.

The use of additional devices significantly increases the range of work performed.

Different models of Agat walk-behind tractors differ only in the installed power unit. It is necessary to understand that the larger the area of terrain that needs to be processed, the more powerful the motor needed on the walk-behind tractor:

  • to cultivate a plot of up to 10 acres, a 5-6 hp engine will be sufficient;
  • for an area of up to 30 acres - 8-9 hp;
  • for plots over 30 acres - at least 10-15 hp. (this is more like a mini tractor).

Fuel consumption

A professional and household walk-behind tractor cannot consume half a liter of gasoline (diesel) per hour. This is possible if the engine is running without load. Typically, manufacturers install a fuel tank of such a size that during intensive use of equipment, the fuel will last for 1.5-2 hours. This is done so that the equipment can “rest” during refueling.

Do not increase the fuel tank capacity yourself. This can lead to premature failure of the walk-behind tractor.

All users of Agat mini-equipment note low fuel consumption. Fuel consumption depends on the engine installed on the vehicle, and for this brand it varies from 1.7 to 2.7 l/hour.

The fuel consumption of professional engines is less than that of household engines.

Comparing the power plants of Agat walk-behind tractors, you can see that the maximum fuel consumption is 2.7 l/h (for a 7 hp engine), and the minimum is 1.7 hp. (for a semi-professional Honda engine with 6.5 hp). So the issue of gasoline consumption by mini-equipment is not particularly important. A can of gasoline will last a long time.

Briefly about the manufacturer

The Agat walk-behind tractors, popular in Russia and the CIS, as well as some other examples of similar equipment, are of “aviation” origin. Gavrilov-Yamsky Machine-Building Plant (Yaroslavl region) was founded in 1968 and was engaged in the production of fuel control equipment for aircraft engines.

The MIG-23 plane is opposite the entrance to.

This plant, which became a branch of the Moscow engineering production association “Banner of the Revolution,” was originally located here to solve the demographic problems of the purely textile “city of brides” Gavrilov Yam.

By 1977, the enterprise had mastered the serial production of a number of aircraft units, and by the turning point of 1991 it had reached its record production volumes. During the 90s, these volumes decreased tenfold, as did the number of workers at the Agat State Metallurgical Plant.

Among the civilian products, the production of which the plant mastered as part of the conversion program, are hydraulic distributors, hydraulic valves and other hydraulic equipment products installed on lifting, construction, road, and municipal equipment. In 2002, universal self-propelled units, motoblocks of the Agat brand, were launched into series.

Attachment overview

Active additional installations can be installed on any Agat walk-behind tractor with a rear adapter. This coupling option creates certain operational difficulties. You have to turn the handle 180 degrees. Therefore, to change the speed, you need to release the handle and go to the gearbox, perform the necessary manipulations and return back.

The standard equipment of any Agat walk-behind tractor includes only cutters. However, the design of this technology allows the use of the following additional devices:

  • lugs (diameter may vary). Used for plowing land, hilling beds, weeding plants;

  • plow. Used for rough plowing of soil and its subsequent loosening. Allows soil cultivation up to 25 cm in depth;

  • rotary mower. Used for mowing grass and rough-stemmed vegetation. Mows vegetation and places it in special rollers, which is very convenient when preparing feed for livestock and caring for lawns;

  • potato planter Used for planting potatoes. The planting depth is set by the operator. It also allows you to form a comb of the desired height. Additionally, it can be equipped with a special mechanism that allows you to fertilize the soil simultaneously with planting;

  • potato digger. When passing through the rows, potatoes or other root crops are removed. The tubers are laid out in rows, and the soil crumbles back;

  • hiller. Designed for cutting and weeding beds while simultaneously loosening them;

  • cart. Used to transport various types of cargo weighing up to 500 kg. Unloading can be either manual or mechanized;

  • walk-behind brush. Used to clear the area of snow and small debris;

  • snow blower. Designed for snow removal in small areas;

  • blade blade (shovel attachment). Designed for removing debris and snow from a flat surface, and can also be used to level out uneven ground.

Owner reviews

  • I bought an Agat BS-1 walk-behind tractor with an American Briggs&Stratton engine. At the initial stage (the first 1-2 years), the engine worked tolerably and produced the necessary power, after which problems began. The unit often stalled, and after 5 years the connecting rod broke off. As a result, the engine had to be replaced. I installed the Lifan unit on the walk-behind tractor. After running-in, the special equipment began to work even better than before. Plowing, transporting cargo and working on the ground turned out to be easier with the new engine. In 2015, I made a homemade rake for equipment. the equipment required minor modifications, since the walk-behind tractor was slipping in the hay. After replacing the wheels the problem disappeared. The total weight of Agat BS-1 with a wheelbarrow is about 300 kg. The maximum load that could be transported with it is 530 kg. Operating the walk-behind tractor is easy. To do this, it is enough to hold the handles so that the special equipment does not “bury itself” and does not jump to the surface. One day was enough to process his plot (15 acres).
  • I purchased an Agat L-6.5 walk-behind tractor in 2011. Using technology, I actively cultivate the area: planting potatoes, plowing, cultivating, hilling and transporting loads. When purchasing, I chose between the Salyut and Agat brands. The latter was criticized by many, but a neighbor advised him to take it. Another advantage of Agat equipment is that it is assembled in Russia, while Salyut is assembled in China. I was pleased with the purchase. Agat L-6.5 is unpretentious in operation and requires little fuel. The disadvantages include medium weight. Sometimes the walk-behind tractor simply knocks out of the strip being processed, so installing additional weights on the lugs is indispensable. The gear selector is located on the gearbox, which is very inconvenient. I didn't find any other problems during my work. The walk-behind tractor does its job perfectly, and is not afraid of even sub-zero temperatures - in winter I use it to remove snow in the yard. The Lifan engine starts perfectly. I recommend this model to everyone.
  • I’ve been using the Agat KhMD-6.5 walk-behind tractor for two years now. I live in a rural area where such special equipment is simply necessary. After several years of working the beds by hand, I decided it was time to mechanize the work. This is how Agat KhMD-6.5 appeared on the farm. After running it in, I immediately started using it actively. I attached the cultivator and began to cultivate the area. He dug up his own garden, then the land of his parents and brother. The speed of cultivation pleased me, as did the fuel consumption. The engine always started the first time (you need to move the “flag” on the carburetor). I found practically no disadvantages in the operation of the walk-behind tractor. The only thing I don't like is the steering wheel mount. Everything else pleased me.
  • I bought Agat BS-1 equipment in the spring. I ran it in, changed the oil according to the instructions and started plowing. The first trips into the field were amazing - the walk-behind tractor pulled excellently, but with a moderate plowing depth. Moreover, even in second gear the device ran perfectly. After several days of work, the walk-behind tractor began to “be capricious”: it “shot” from the exhaust pipe and “sneezed”. Then the power and speed began to disappear. Changing the oil slightly improved the condition, but the problems did not completely disappear. I put the equipment to rest and started it again in the spring. Surprisingly, the previous figures returned. At the end of the second season, an oil leak appeared in the gearbox. I contacted dealers who said that this condition is normal. As a result, I had to work with this problem further. Agat BS-1 turned out to be a very controversial model with its pros and cons.
  • I have been using an Agat walk-behind tractor with a diesel engine since 2014. Started working immediately after running in. I am satisfied with the special equipment in everything. In first gear, it easily takes virgin soil in several passes through a gradual depression. The design of the gearbox is not very well thought out, since there is no oil dipstick. To estimate the quantity, you have to do a long drain. The axis on which the cutters are mounted is constantly in oil, although oil does not leak from under the gear selector rod. Probably, the design of the walk-behind tractor is not fully thought out. I have not experienced any other problems with this model.
