What kind of oil to fill in KAMAZ - tolerances and replacement recommendations

KamAZ 740.63-400 is a diesel engine for the KamAZ-6520 dump truck, which has been on the market since 2003. Initially, this unit complied with Euro-2 standards, and in 2008 it was upgraded to Euro-3. The power plant works with a 16-speed ZF gearbox. In addition, some models of the first years of production were equipped with a nine-speed YaMZ-239 transmission, but such modifications of the KamAZ-6520 were in demand mainly in urban areas. At the same time, the service life of the gearbox, when used correctly, can reach 1 million kilometers. A dump truck with a KamAZ 740.63-400 engine accelerates to 90 km/h and consumes from 46 to 53 liters, depending on road conditions.

How much oil to pour into the engine of a KamAZ 6520 car

KamAZ-740.63-400 is a representative of the KamAZ-740 engine family, produced since 1969. It has eight cylinders and a displacement of 11 liters, and its power for the 6520 dump truck is 400 horsepower. The engine transmits torque to the main components through spur gears.

The design of the motor includes a large margin of safety and adaptation to harsh climatic loads, which allows the engine to be started at very low temperatures. This is due to the rather powerful battery, starter and pre-heater. The number of valves is 16 (2 for each cylinder), and the piston stroke is 130 mm. The engine weight is 835 kg.

Reviews

Victor, Penza. There is no doubt that the Kamaz 6520 is powerful and passable, with lower sides than its Chinese counterparts and easy to maintain. However, even in maintained condition, the 6520 is not worth the money spent. The reason is expensive and low-quality spare parts, enormous fuel consumption and high taxes. For modern conditions, it is better to look for something more modern.

Yaroslav, Krasnodar region. I had a used 2012 KamAZ-6520, which immediately impressed me with its fast engine. Yes, the first emotions were just fire. But the euphoria ended three months later. The box jammed, and behind it the engine. The cost of repairs was 600 thousand. But the car was only a year old (it was a 2011 model year). These breakdowns are probably just the beginning - I thought to myself, and put this bucket on Avito, and with the money I raised I added and came across a more modern and comfortable Chinese one.

Service station for KamAZ 6520 bridge

During seasonal maintenance (STO) of the KamAZ 6520 bridge :

  • Check the operation of the cross-axle differential locking mechanism. When the lock is turned on, the indicator on the instrument panel should light up;
  • check the condition of the wheel hub bearings (with the hubs removed). There should be no visible holes or cracks on the rollers and bearing races. The rollers must not fall out of the cages;
  • change the lubricant in the wheel hubs. Remove old lubricant, wash the inner cavity of the hub, bearings, nuts and washers with kerosene. Place lubricant between the rollers and bearing cages evenly around the entire circumference and into the cavity of the hub between the bearing races;
  • After checking and replacing the lubricant, adjust the front wheel bearings. To do this, rotate the hub in both directions and tighten the bearing nut until the hub begins to brake. Then loosen the nut 1/6 turn and lock it using a screw with a lock washer. Check the uniformity and ease of rotation of the hub in two directions;
  • tighten the nuts securing the final drive housing and the bolts securing the carrier cover of the rear axle wheel drives, and the drain and filler plugs. The tightening torque for nuts is 160...180 N-m (16...18 kgf-m), bolts - 36...50 N-m (3.6...5 kgf-m);
  • check the axial and radial movements of the input flange in the final drive of the rear axle. Determine the presence of movement by rocking the propeller shaft with your hands at the point where the shaft flange is attached to the axle flange. If there is movement, it is necessary to disconnect the propeller shaft and tighten the rear drive axle flange nut to a torque of 590...690 Nm (60...70 kgfm);
  • check the axial and radial movements of the input flange on the main drive of the middle axle. Determine the presence of movement by rocking the propeller shaft with your hands at the point where the shaft flange is attached to the axle flange. If there is movement, it is necessary to disconnect the propeller shaft, unscrew the flange mounting nut, remove the flange, cover and reduce the thickness of the adjusting shims by no more than 0.1 mm. In this case, gaskets with a thickness of 0.05 mm should remain at the edges of the gasket package. Then secure the cover in the gearbox housing, install the flange and tighten the nut to a torque of 590...690 Nm (60...70 kgfm);
  • change the oil in the crankcases of the main and wheel gears of the rear axle. Unscrew the plugs of the control and filler holes. Remove deposits from drain plug magnets. Fill with oil to the level of the edge of the inspection hole;
  • Clean the safety valves of the drive axles from dirt by turning the valve head by hand or by washing in diesel fuel.

To check the KamAZ 6520 axle for leaks, it is necessary to supply air through the threaded hole under the axle crankcase safety valve with an excess pressure in the crankcase of 19.6…24.5 kPa (0.20…0.25 kgf/cm2).

Oil leakage through the cuffs, joints and welds on the axle housing is unacceptable (slight formation of oil stains on surfaces in the above areas, except for welds, without drop formation is not a rejection sign).

To check the oil level, you need to unscrew the inspection hole plug on the main housing and rear axle wheel drives. If there is no oil leakage from the control hole, then it is necessary to add oil to its level through the filler hole.

To change the oil in main gears, wheel reducers and axle housings, it is necessary to drain the used oil when it is still warm from heating during operation. Drain the oil through the drain hole, unscrewing the control and filler plugs.

Change the oil in accordance with the chemotological chart.

After draining the oil, clean the magnetic drain, control and filler plugs from metal deposits and install them in place.

Wash the safety valves of the drive axles with diesel fuel, followed by blowing them with compressed air.

To check the fastening of the input flange of the main drive of the middle and rear axles, place the car on an inspection ditch or overpass and place chocks under the wheels. Then release the parking brake, place the gear lever in neutral and disengage the center differential lock. Use your hands to rock the shaft flange in the longitudinal and transverse directions. If there is a noticeable gap, disconnect the driveshaft and eliminate the flange movement.

To check the operation of the center differential locking mechanism, move the valve lever for engaging the locking mechanism to the SLIPPERY ROAD position. In this case, the indicator lamp for turning on the center differential on the instrument panel should light up. If the warning light does not light up, try turning on the lock when the car is moving slowly. If the lock does not turn on, then you need to fix the problem.

To check the operation of the cross-axle differential locking mechanism, you must turn off the center differential lock and press the cross-axle differential lock enable button on the instrument panel. At the same time, the indicator lamps on the instrument panel indicating that the cross-axle differential lock of the rear and middle axles is engaged should light up. If at least one of the warning lamps does not light up, then you need to try to turn on the lock when the empty car is moving slowly around a bend that has a significant radius. If the lock does not turn on, then you need to fix the problem.

To adjust the wheel hub bearings, you need to hang the wheels and do the following:

  • tighten the bearing fastening nut until the hub starts braking, turning it in both directions;
  • unscrew the nut approximately 1/6 of a turn until the threaded hole aligns with the nearest hole in the lock washer;
  • screw the locking bolt into the nut;
  • lock the bolt by bending the projections of the lock washer onto the edge of the bolt.

How often does the oil need to be changed?

It is recommended to change the oil in the KamAZ engine at least every 10,000–15,000 km of the truck. And if the color of the oil changes, this procedure must be performed immediately. There are other factors that force you to deviate from the instructions:

  • Unfavorable conditions: harsh climate, bad roads, constant overloads affect the condition of lubricants, and most often, changing the engine oil is required earlier than the period established by the manufacturer.
  • Poor quality fuel: affects the thermal conditions of the engine and provokes the formation of impurities in the oil.
  • Vehicle service life: the older the KamAZ, the shorter the intervals between lubricant changes.
