How the GAZ-33081 “Sadko” was created
At the end of the 80s, the question arose about replacing the GAZ-66 truck. In 1990, the designers of the Gorky Automobile Plant created the GAZ-3301 car with a diesel engine, but due to the difficult economic situation in the country, it never went into production. Use in combat conditions
GAZ-33081 is not intended for direct participation in hostilities. However, its cross-country ability allows it to be used in supplying forward sectors of the front for transporting small groups of soldiers and cargo.
There are photographs and media evidence of the frequent use of Sadko trucks in Syria. This is due not only to the participation of the Russian military, but also to the export of cars to this country. There have been cases when trucks were sheathed with additional armor and received twin ZU-32-2 anti-aircraft guns or outdated 57-mm ZiS-2 anti-tank guns.
At the same time, Egypt developed a modification based on the GAZ-3308 chassis with a SAKR multiple launch rocket system. It is expected that after testing, such vehicles will begin to enter service with the Egyptian army.
Engine characteristics
Over the entire period of production, Sadko was equipped with two types of diesel engines. The basic package includes the installation of the MMZ D-245.7 power unit. This is a four-cylinder engine manufactured in Belarus. It is now produced according to the Euro-4 environmental standard.
Another engine is installed only upon individual order. A car with it acquires even more attractive qualities:

- maximum speed – 95 km/h,
- fuel consumption – 13.9 at a speed of 60 km/h.

Transmission
Regardless of the installed power unit, the GAZ-3308 is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission. All gears (except reverse and first) are synchronized. The van received a two-way mechanical transfer case with a drive on both axles, as well as a reduction and direct transmission.
The clutch is hydraulic, dry. It is made of a friction type with a hydraulic drive. Trucks with a diesel engine are equipped with a diaphragm spring, and gasoline models are equipped with a peripheral spring.
Cabin interior
Surprisingly, the car turned out to be quite comfortable, even in standard configuration. This is partly due to the spacious cabin, which makes it feel comfortable inside. As an additional option, you can purchase a customizable driver's seat, which will make the truck even more attractive.
The ascetic dashboard was made quite comfortable; for example, the steering wheel no longer covers some of the instruments, which fit neatly into it. Installing a hydraulic power steering wheel has significantly reduced the load on the driver.
On the passenger side, the interior does not particularly stand out; there is the same 2-seater sofa, but due to the size of the cabin, it is quite comfortable to move around. It is clear that the comfort level of the Taiga modification, which has a NEXT cabin, is much better, but this only draws attention to the fact that Sadko does not know the boundaries of perfection.
Inside the GAZ-Sadko 4x4 everything looks utilitarian, extremely simple, but practical. Getting into the car can present some inconveniences, since the cabin is quite high, and the factory does not provide comfortable handrails that you could grab onto. Perhaps even here Gorky’s specialists decided to save money.
For the driver and passenger there are two seats with quite comfortable seats, with soft upholstery and seat belts. It is worth adding that model 33081 is equipped as an additional option with a two-row cabin, which has a pair or four doors.
Modification with a pair of doors - the rear row of seats can be exchanged for a pair of berths, which will make it possible to use the truck for long-distance cargo transportation, or for repair teams where there are remote areas.
Advantages and disadvantages

The technical characteristics of the Sadko provide the truck with a number of undeniable advantages:
- increased cross-country ability on dirt roads and off-road;
- ease of control and control over the progress of the machine;
- cabin comfort;
- variability of the model range.
One of the key advantages of the truck is its technical simplicity and the absence of unnecessary parts. This increases the repairability of the car and reduces the cost of its maintenance.
Despite the significant advantages of the machine, there are also a number of disadvantages. The main attention is paid to the inconvenience of certain points:
- there are no handrails for climbing into the cabin, although even the GAZ-66 had them;
- to replace or overhaul the engine, you have to remove the hood and radiator grille;
- The spare wheel is located in the body, which makes it difficult to replace when the car is fully loaded.
There are other complaints - the steering wheel is very large, the reversing light is not bright enough, the rear-view mirrors are not heated. However, such aspects are often subjective, many can be corrected by modifications or tuning the truck yourself.
Price
The starting price for GAZ Sadko is considered to be RUB 1,330,000. This price tag is still higher than the price of the “Countryman”, which even has an increased carrying capacity. The difference is as much as 50,000 rubles. If we talk about other modifications with configurations, then you need to calculate this together with the manager when placing an order.

When you add to them various companies that are engaged in completing the construction of special vehicles and vans on the Sadko platform, the number of modifications can go beyond a thousand.
Chassis
The car is equipped with a steering mechanism of a screw-ball nut structure with an integrated hydraulic booster, as well as a two-line brake system with drum devices on all wheels and ABS. Power unit
Today there are three options for installing the engine on the GAZ-3308:
- diesel from the Minsk Automobile Plant;
- diesel from the Yaroslavl Automobile Plant;
- gasoline from the Zavolzhsky Automobile Plant.
It is worth noting that it is the gasoline version that has proven itself best, which is purchased by the vast majority of customers. It is equipped with an eight-cylinder carburetor-type gasoline engine. The engine is capable of producing 122 horsepower, which is enough for the truck to easily overcome difficult sections of the road, such as steep climbs.
Many motorists note that when fully loaded, the car becomes less controllable. However, if the load is distributed correctly, no problems should arise. It should also be noted that the diesel version, unlike the gasoline version, has less power.
