When installing a new driven gear of the main gear and a new differential bearing installed on the side of the driven gear and resting on the adjusting ring, measure dimension E, applying an axial force P = 4000-5000 N (400-500 kgf) and rolling the bearing so that the rollers are in the correct position position.

In the crankcase, measure dimension B from the axis of the drive gear to the thrust end of the differential bearing. Based on the actual dimensions B, E and the mounting size of 50 mm of the driven gear, select a ring with thickness b2 = (B-(E+50±x)) mm with an accuracy of ±0.025 mm, where x is the actual deviation from the mounting size of 50 mm with the corresponding sign (plus or minus), which is applied with an electrograph on the end of the driven gear.

If only the differential bearing installed on the driven gear side needs to be replaced, then measure the mounting height of the bearing as shown in the figures below. If the measured height of the new bearing is greater or less than the height of the old bearing by some amount, then in order not to disturb the position of the driven gear, the new adjusting ring should be thinner in the first case or thicker in the second by the same amount.

Adjusting the rear axle of the UAZ Patriot Spicer type

The main gear drive gear is adjusted in the following order:

1. Calculate the thickness of the drive gear adjusting ring using the formula: δ1=B-(111.960+G), with an accuracy of ±0.025 mm. Remove dimensions B and D from the gearbox of your rear axle. The diagram of dimensions B and D is shown below in the figure:
2. Install the selected adjusting ring of the drive gear into crankcase 1 (see the figure in the chapter “Design of the rear axle of the UAZ Patriot”)
3. Press the outer rings of the drive gear bearings into the crankcase neck;
4. Place the oil removal ring 13 onto the drive gear shank and install the rear bearing inner race
5. Install the assembled drive gear into the rear axle housing shank;
6. Place spacer 11, the inner race of the front bearing and ring 6 on the outside onto the drive gear;
7. Press cuff 10 flush into the crankcase neck;
8. Place flange 7 onto the splines of the drive gear until it stops;
9. Put on washer 9 and screw nut 8 with a force of 18 - 25 kg/m. When tightening nut 8, continuously rotate the drive gear shank to ensure proper installation of the bearing rollers;
10. Measure the turning force of the drive gear using ordinary household hand scales, clinging them to the holes in the shank flange. It should be 0.1 - 0.2 kgf/m;
11. Place nut 8 into the spline of the drive gear shank.

Adjustment of the driven gear of the final drive of the UAZ Patriot rear axle is performed in the following sequence:

1. Determine the size of the adjusting washer 12 (see the figure in the chapter “Design of the rear axle of the UAZ Patriot”) δ2=B-(E+50±x) in mm with an accuracy of ±0.025 mm, where x is the size of the maximum deviation from the mounting size of 50 mm with the corresponding a sign (plus or minus), which is applied with an electrograph on the end of the driven gear;
2. Install the selected adjusting washer 12 and the differential into the rear axle housing;
3. Place the differential bearing caps 29 and secure them with bolts 28 with a force of 0.5 kg/m;
4. Adjust the differential bearings 15 by tightening the nut 17, while rotating the differential to ensure that its bearings are positioned correctly;
5. Check the total turning force of the drive and driven gears - 0.21 - 0.42 N/m. Check by turning the drive gear flange;
6. Measure the side clearance (temperature clearance) between the driven and drive gears. The measurement is made with a dial indicator attached to the crankcase flange, perpendicular to the driven gear tooth. The gap should be in the range of 0.15 - 0.25 mm. The check should be carried out on 3 - 4 teeth, evenly spaced around the circumference. The spread of the gap values ​​should not exceed 0.05 mm. If the measured lateral clearance between the drive and driven gears is less than 0.15 mm, then it is necessary to replace the adjusting ring 27 with a smaller thickness.

The differential bearing adjusting ring and pinion adjusting ring are the same in inner and outer diameter and have part number 3160-2403090. According to the change in thickness, they go through 0.05 mm

Checking the engagement of the drive and driven gears along the contact patch is performed in the following sequence:

1. Paint 2 teeth of the driven gear with paint in 3 or 4 places evenly around the circumference;
2. Rotate the differential by the driven gear until a contact imprint is formed;
3. No. 1 indicates correct gear contact.
   In other cases, you will need to do the following:
   • When contacting along the top of the tooth (No. 2), move the drive gear towards the driven gear. To do this, increase the thickness of the adjusting ring 12. To maintain the size of the side gap by the same amount, reduce the thickness of the adjusting ring 27.

   When contact occurs at the base of the tooth (No. 3), move the drive gear away from the driven gear;

4. If there is contact at the narrow end of the tooth (No. 4), move the driven gear away from the drive gear;
5. When making contact at the wide end of the tooth (No. 5), move the driven gear towards the drive gear. To do this, increase the thickness of the adjusting ring No. 27. To maintain the lateral clearance between the driven and drive gears, simultaneously move the drive gear away from the driven gear. To do this, reduce the thickness of the adjusting ring 12.
6. Unscrewing the mounting bolts 28 one by one, apply anaerobic sealant UG-6 to their threads, having previously degreased the threaded connection.
7. Tighten bolts 28 with a force of 14 - 16 kgf/m;
8. Place locking plate 19 on the differential bearing cover and secure it with bolt 18 with a force of 1.1 - 2.5 kgf/m, having previously applied anaerobic sealant to its threads;
9. Install gasket 24 and crankcase cover 21 and tighten the fastening bolts to a torque of 1.1 - 2.5 kgf/m;
10. If during operation of the car the crankcase heats up in the area of ​​the drive gear bearings and differential bearings above 90 oC (water boils on the crankcase), then adjust the rear axle gearbox again.

The nuances of dismantling the bridge

Experienced UAZ owners know: bridges are one of the most “capricious” parts of UAZ cars. They are extremely sensitive to the correct location and serviceability of the components located in them. But you can approach these elements to repair them or replace parts if you dismantle the entire bridge, separating the halves of the crankcase.

The rear axle usually requires more attention from the car owner, since it bears the main load. After all, most often UAZ owners drive on hard road surfaces with the front axle disabled. The main difficulty when dismantling a wheel unit, especially one that has tasted the “salt” of city roads in winter for many years, is to unscrew the nuts of the brake pipes; without this, it will not be possible to remove and disassemble the bridge. To ensure trouble-free unscrewing of such nuts, stock up on:

• split wrench with tightening bolt;
• WD-40 or equivalent.

In especially severe cases, if the lubricant does not help increase the mobility of the nuts, you can use any household detergent based on phosphoric acid.
