GAZ 3302 is a series of light-duty trucks produced by the Gorky Automobile Plant. The model is rightfully considered the most common commercial vehicle of domestic production. The debut representative of the family appeared almost 25 years ago. In a short period of time, the model managed to gain enormous popularity. Initially, the GAZ 3302 was produced in the format of a small truck with a carrying capacity of 1.5 tons, but great demand forced the Gorky Automobile Plant to expand the line.

GAZ 3302 became the “discoverer” of the family of light-duty commercial vehicles made in Russia. The main advantage of the model was its low cost and simplicity of design. The assembly of various modifications from domestic vehicle kits was carried out at enterprises near and far abroad.

The series (especially the first versions) had a number of shortcomings characteristic of Russian cars. However, affordable cost, maintainability and ease of management ensured its steady demand in the market.

GAZ 3302 is a maneuverable and compact truck adapted to Russian operating conditions. The model feels great in urban environments with narrow entrances to warehouses, infrastructure facilities and retail outlets. The machine can be used to transport work crews and special equipment, which makes it popular among construction companies.

The GAZ 3302 series includes versions with gas cylinder equipment, which are in great demand among Russians. The operating cost of such modifications is significantly lower.

Another advantage of the GAZ 3302 is the class of the vehicle. The series does not belong to full-fledged trucks, therefore, to drive the driver only needs a category B license.

The new GAZelle GAZ-2705 is sold at a price of 518,600 rubles. A model with a dual-fuel engine is offered for RUB 540,700. GAZelle Combi with a Cummins engine has a price starting from RUB 736,950. There are many used cars on the market. A GAZelle produced in 2007-2008 can be bought for 140,000-210,000 rubles, 2015-2016 - for 410,000-520,000 rubles. Foreign modifications are more expensive.

Story

The need for a compact truck was dictated by new market relations that were actively developing in the country in the early 1990s. The constant increase in the number of small cargo transportation led to a sharp increase in demand for small commercial vehicles, which the Russian automotive industry could not satisfy. There was simply no affordable and high-quality product on the market. The GAZ group was the first to respond to the emerging need by introducing the GAZelle line. The empty niche was supposed to be filled with a very interesting development - the GAZ 3302 light-duty truck.

The appearance of a fundamentally new model in 1994 changed the mechanism of intercity and urban transportation, significantly simplifying it. The technical characteristics of the GAZ 3302 ensured rapid growth and broad opportunities. The new design principle became a turning point in the understanding of cargo transportation, and the model itself became one of the most popular on the Russian market for many years.

The design of the GAZ 3302 could hardly be called stunning. The streamlined cabin is simple in shape without any interesting elements. The model received a standard appearance and was initially equipped with an old-fashioned radiator grille, complemented by rectangular headlights. The developers' priority was functionality.

In the summer of 1995, the Gorky Automobile Plant produced a small series of all-wheel drive GAZ 33027 with a dual-pitch rear tire and permanent all-wheel drive. The modification was intended to work in difficult areas and on dirt roads.

In 2002, an extended version of the GAZ 330202 appeared, initially equipped exclusively with tow truck platforms and auto bench bodies. Subsequently, standard add-ons began to be installed on it. Modifications with increased length made it possible to partially close the niche between the Valdai and GAZelle models.

In 2003, the GAZ 3302 series underwent a minor restyling, which made the design more attractive.

We had to wait 7 years for the next update. Global modernization led to a name change. The car became known as “GAZelle-Business”. The developers borrowed the cabin design from the Ford Transit model, which had a positive effect on the level of comfort and attractiveness. The interior space of the GAZelle-Business has increased (3 people could easily fit in the cabin). Visibility has also improved. At the same time, the Gorky Automobile Plant did not refuse to produce the first modification with a more affordable price.

In 2011, production of a 2-ton model with a reinforced rear axle began.

Back in 1995, the development of a gas-cylinder version of the GAZ 33205 for the CIS countries began, but large-scale production of the model was postponed several times. The car entered production only in the spring of 2010. Previously, all gasified modifications of GAZelle were equipped with gas cylinder equipment through small specialized companies for individual orders. At the same time, the consumer lost the factory warranty, which negatively affected the demand for this model.

Modifications

The GAZ 3302 line is usually divided into 2 large groups:

  • GAZ 3302 “GAZelle” is a truck with a carrying capacity of up to 2 tons and a standard cabin for 2 passengers.
  • GAZ 33023 “GAZelle Farmer” is a cargo-passenger model designed to transport cargo weighing up to 1 ton and 5 passengers.

  • GAZ 3302-216 – tilt version with UMZ-4216 unit;
  • GAZ 3302-404 – tilt model with ZMZ-40524 engine;
  • GAZ 3302-408 - an analogue of GAZ 3302-404, distinguished by the presence of hydraulic power steering;
  • GAZ 3302-531 – diesel tilt version with GAZ-5602 engine;
  • GAZ 3302-748 - a tilt variation with a foreign Chrysler 2.4L-DOHC unit;
  • GAZ 330200-0404 - an extended model with an awning and a ZMZ-40524 engine;

GAZ 33023 (“GAZelle Farmer”) has a wide range of applications (from narrow city streets to rural roads). The body volume of this modification is 4.5 cubic meters, which allows you to transport fairly large cargo. Extended and all-wheel drive versions of the line are available for consumers.

Engine

The line of engines of the GAZ 3302 family is represented by the following units:

  • ZMZ-4025.10/ZMZ-4026.10 – 4-cylinder carburetor engines running on gasoline and installed on the first modifications of the series. The units had a rated power of 90 and 100 hp. Currently not in use;
  • ZMZ-40524 is a gasoline injection engine from the Zavolzhsky Motor Plant. It is most widespread among the models of the GAZ 3302 line. The unit is an in-line “four” with liquid cooling. The motor meets Euro-3 environmental standards. Characteristics of the ZMZ-40524 engine: displacement – ​​2.46 l, rated power – 133 hp, maximum torque – 214 Nm. Average fuel consumption is 11.5 l/100 km;
  • UMZ-4216 is a gasoline unit manufactured by the Ulyanovsk Motor Plant. The 4-cylinder in-line engine was small in size and reliable. GAZ 3302 models were equipped with UMZ-4216 Euro-3 engines. Engine characteristics: displacement – ​​2.89 liters, rated power – 123 hp, maximum torque – 235 Nm. The main feature of the UMZ-4216 unit was the ability to install gas equipment in a specialized center;
  • Chrysler 2.4L-DOHC is a foreign-made gasoline unit. The engine was characterized by an in-line design with 4 cylinders, a 16-valve timing belt and a distributed fuel injection system. The quiet, reliable and powerful engine required increased care. Characteristics of the Chrysler 2.4L-DOHC unit: displacement – ​​2.43 liters, rated power – 150 hp, maximum torque – 224 Nm;
  • GAZ-5602 is a diesel engine from the Gorky Automobile Plant. The unit was developed on the basis of the STEYR M14 engine and received a similar layout, suggesting the presence of 4 in-line cylinders, turbocharging and a microprocessor fuel control system. Characteristics of the GAZ-5602 engine: displacement – ​​2.13 liters, rated power – 95 hp, maximum torque – 204 Nm.

The capacity of the standard fuel tank is 70 l.

First restyling

In 2003, the Gazel underwent its first restyling, primarily the modernization affected the external appearance of the car:

  • The headlights became different, and if on the 1994-2003 model they had a rectangular shape (borrowed from the GAZ-31029/3110 passenger car), then the new car already had its own optics;
  • the hood acquired a different shape;
  • the front fenders have changed;
  • The factory decided to install new bumpers and radiator grille.

The changes also affected the interior - the instrument panel was changed, and the instrument panel was taken from the Volga GAZ-3110. The ZMZ-402 engine was discontinued and was no longer installed on the updated Gazelle. Since 2003, the restyled version has been equipped with the GAZ-5602 engine as standard, since 2007 - UMZ-4216, and since 2008 - ZMZ-40524.

Device

Most GAZ 3302 models have a 4 by 2 wheel arrangement with rear wheel drive. However, the line also includes all-wheel drive versions with a permanently connected front axle via a center differential. These modifications have increased ground clearance.

All variations of the GAZ 3302 are based on a durable frame chassis, to which the main elements are attached. The chassis is represented by dependent spring suspension in the front and rear, supplemented by telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers. A stabilizer is installed on the rear axle, designed to reduce roll when turning.

A wide range of GAZ 3302 units operates in conjunction with a non-alternative 5-speed 3-shaft fully synchronized mechanical transmission. The main gear is hypoid with a gear ratio of 5.125. The transmission interacts with the engine using a single-plate dry friction clutch with a hydraulic drive.

The brake system is represented by a dual-circuit mechanism with a vacuum booster and a hydraulic drive. Disc elements are used on the front wheels, while classic drum mechanisms are used on the rear wheels. The parking brake is equipped with a cable drive. Spare brake system - each circuit of the main system.

The steering system is represented by a “screw-ball nut” device. For some modifications, a hydraulic booster is provided.

GAZ 3302 looks extremely simple. The standard, streamlined cab is compact and small in size. In the front area is the hood, under which the engine is located. In the classic version, the cabin is designed for 3 people, including the driver (for the GAZ 33023 “GAZelle Farmer” version - for 6 people, including the driver). Modifications with a berth are available. The interior design of the car is as unattractive as the exterior. Textile upholstery is simple and inexpensive. The instrument panel features the old black sliders, red and blue knobs and buttons. The oven grates are made very roughly. The functionality of the seats is minimal, but allows you to change their position. Special buttons are provided to adjust the tilt angle and move back and forth. In the latest versions, the central panel has more interesting shapes, replacing the previous rectangular accents.

GAZelle-Next

In April 2013, GAZ began serial production of the Gazelle Next car, and this was no longer a restyling, but a completely new second-generation car. The design of the Next commercial vehicle has completely changed - its appearance corresponds to the idea of ​​a modern car, and it looks no worse than any foreign car.

From the very beginning of production, only one type of engine was installed on the Next - a Cummins 2800 cm³ diesel engine. Subsequently, the line of power units expanded, it was supplemented by the Ulyanovsk Evotech E-4 gasoline engine with a volume of 2700 cm³. Although the transmission has been modernized, the car is equipped with the same 5-speed manual. The car does not have a gearbox or other gearboxes.
