The test drive was supposed to demonstrate the multifunctional capabilities of the new agricultural Ural. The journalists were expecting two cars from the pre-production batch of the automobile. At Moscow State Agrarian University named after. V.P. Goryachkina chassis were equipped with experimental replaceable adapters STA-5 - for applying solid mineral fertilizers and STA-5ZhO for subsoil application of liquid organic fertilizers. The add-ons not only clearly demonstrated the expansion of the vehicle’s capabilities, but also made it possible to practice the issues of chassis hydraulics (power take-off, installation of a hydraulic pump and hydraulic motors, laying hydraulic hoses), as well as to test vehicles in a new form directly in the field before offering them to consumers.
Thanks to the test drive, I have the opportunity to share my personal impressions of the new machines, including the process of changing add-ons and going into the field.
The adapters are designed in such a way that they can be replaced by one person in 40 minutes. Two people can do it twice as fast. The only condition is the presence of a flat area, preferably with a hard surface. The replacement and storage of superstructures is expected in the conditions of the equipment fleet, so the presence of such a site should not cause any special problems for business executives.
Since the adapters and chassis are hydraulically equipped to drive the working parts, the first step is to disconnect the connecting hydraulic hoses. Using special split heads, this is not difficult to do and takes the driver no more than 1–2 minutes. The same amount of time will be required to remove the locks that block the body on the chassis. By the way, the chassis now has two power take-off points - from the gearbox, where a hydraulic pump is installed on the chassis, and from the transfer case, where a cardan drive can be connected. Thus, the chassis can be used not only for replaceable superstructures, but also for stationary installations that require a different drive of the working parts.
Next, to remove the body, it is necessary to insert rolling mechanical jacks into special sockets on the adapter, with the help of which the superstructure is lifted above the chassis. Here you will have to work hard and make some efforts. With the help of four people, you can lift the adapter from four sides at the same time, but if one person is working, then after 15-20 turns of the jack handle, he needs to move to the next stand until the superstructure is completely raised above the chassis. Of course, it was possible to provide hydraulic or even electric lifts for these purposes, but, firstly, this would affect the total cost of the entire set, since jack stands are needed for each body, and, secondly, simpler mechanical jacks seem more expensive reliable in rural areas. In terms of effort, there is no need to change adapters several times a day, and in this case the process does not seem so overwhelming. As a last resort, changing superstructures can be done using a crane.
After lifting the superstructure, the chassis can easily move out and move to the next adapter. The dismantled adapter remains standing on the jack stands until the next use. The design of the jacks is not designed to hold a replaceable superstructure with a load (5 tons!), so it is unsafe to store filled bodies on the site.
The approach of the chassis under the new body requires attentiveness and caution from the driver, but does not cause excessive problems, since he has the ability to monitor the movement of the car not only through the mirrors, but also through the rear or lowering side window of the cab. For work in the dark, special headlights are installed on the chassis, which provide enough light back for safe docking. You need to drive under the body quite precisely (special marks will tell you), but not to the nearest millimeter. The main thing is that the special fastening elements of the body are above the cone catchers on the frame of the car, then when lowered the body itself will fall into its intended place. All that remains is to close the retaining locks and connect the hydraulic hoses if the body has working parts powered by hydraulic motors.
