The KamAZ 5490 model is based on a two-axle frame platform with rear-wheel drive and a 4 by 2 wheel arrangement. The front part of the vehicle uses leaf spring suspension, and the rear part uses a double-barrel air suspension with the ECAS system. Thanks to this, the operator can adjust the position of the frame relative to the ground, performing loading and unloading operations with maximum comfort. This arrangement again ensures stability on sharp turns and a smooth ride. The rear axle is equipped with a Daimler HL6 axle equipped with a hypoid final drive, designed specifically for long-distance transport.

KamAZ 5490 is equipped with a 16-speed manual transmission ZF Astronic 16S2221 (manufacturer – Germany), supplemented by a single-plate clutch MFZ 430 with an intarder. The gearbox is remote controlled. Initially, it was planned to install a domestically produced gearbox on the car, but it did not fit the foreign engine.

The truck is equipped with electronically controlled disc brakes. They are complemented by the ASR traction control system, the ESP exchange rate stability system and the EBS electro-pneumatic control drive. The model is equipped with tubeless disc wheels with 315/60 R225 tires.

The KamAZ 5490 operator's cabin has received many improvements. Its design has been completely revised, with changes affecting the fenders, bumper, grille and mirrors. The material chosen for them was high-quality plastic, resistant to damage and corrosion.

The interior of the car has again been revised. Inside, air-suspension seats from Grammer appeared, minimizing shocks and vibrations while driving. The seats had adjustable armrests and position. The steering wheel has settings for reach and tilt angle. The operator's cabin was required to be equipped with a cruise control system, including electric windows, a remote-controlled sunroof and air conditioning. To store necessary things, the driver could use the niches under the berth or the compartments and shelves located to his right. Most of the buttons on the control panel were at arm's length. A radio and tachograph were installed in the cabin.

The operator's cabin received a tilting system with electrical and manual control and was placed on a four-point air suspension. In the basic configuration, it was equipped with audio preparation, an instrument panel with anti-reflective coating, power steering, auxiliary heater, LED fog lights and a three-stage running board with anti-slip coating. Navigation, refrigerator and multimedia system were functionally available.

Localization of KamAZ 5490 production was supposed to be 60%. Currently, tires, a frame, individual chassis elements and a plastic body kit for the operator’s cabin are manufactured in Russia. Many interior elements are supplied by foreign companies, as is the steering. The car engine is German. This arrangement allows you to get both a reliable and productive product at an affordable price.

The engine is equipped with PLD fuel equipment and turbocharging. Although according to the plant the engine life is 1000 thousand km, in fact it covers more than half a million thousand kilometers with proper care.

Electronic control for fuel supply is individual for each injector. Bosh PLD is demanding on the quality of diesel fuel. Therefore, only high-quality fuel must be poured into this engine. Although many car owners believe that Common Rail is more susceptible to dirty fuel than Bosch PLD.

Attention! Many experienced mechanics working in service centers do swaps. Change OM457 to OM501. These internal combustion engines are considered almost identical. However, there are differences in the sizes of the components. For example, the piston diameter is 128 and 130, respectively. Its course will also be different. The sizes of the cylinder heads are also different. This creates minor problems during the swap.

History and purpose

KamAZ 5490 has a relatively long history. The model was the result of the joint work of specialists from the Kama Automobile Plant and Daimler Trucks engineers. For the Russian market, this tractor turned out to be a real breakthrough in the segment of automobile cargo carriers. About $40 million was invested in the development of KamAZ 5490. The costs were not in vain. Thanks to significant financial investments, significant reliability, adaptation to modern comfort requirements and technologies from famous brands, the model received the title “Prospect of the Year” even before the official premiere.

The KamAZ 5490 was shown at the Comtrans-2011 exhibition. Many people recognized the popular Mercedes Acros tractor in the premiere model. This similarity was understandable. When developing a domestic product, many elements of the operator's cabin of a German car (2001 series) were taken. Specialists from the Kama Automobile Plant restyled it and redesigned the turn signals and headlights. There were certain similarities in the design. However, KamAZ 5490 turned out to be an independent model and did not copy its German “brother”.

At the same time, the car was significantly different from previously produced products of the Kama Automobile Plant. Domestic specialists, together with experts from Daimler Trucks, managed to create a unique model that combines interesting appearance, affordability and performance. KamAZ 5490 was excellent for operation in harsh conditions and allowed long-term transportation. The priority when creating the car was convenience and practicality. As a result, the body became more streamlined, and the interior received many useful functions.

The first production models appeared in October 2013. Shortly before this, the Kama Automobile Plant began assembling new cabins for the KamAZ 5490 vehicle. By the end of the year, the company produced 93 tractors, which sold out quite quickly. In the next 12 months, about 2,500 more cars were produced. The planned production volumes of KamAZ 5490 models are about 1500-2000 units annually.

At the end of 2014, the Kama Automobile Plant presented several specialized modifications built on the basis of the KamAZ 5490. Later, other versions of the car appeared. Among them:

  • KamAZ 65206 – truck tractor with a maximum load on the saddle of 16600 kg;
  • KamAZ 6580 – dump truck with a 6 by 4 wheel arrangement;
  • KamAZ 65801 – dump truck with 8 by 4 wheel arrangement;
  • KamAZ 65802 – dump truck with a 6 by 6 wheel arrangement;
  • KamAZ 65207 is a flatbed truck with a load capacity of 15,000 kg.

The main purpose of the KamAZ 5490 model is to transport cargo or tow heavy semi-trailer vehicles on various types of paved roads. The car can operate in almost any lane of the country and can withstand serious loads.

Review of faults and methods for repairing them

Often the problem with the OM457LA engine is the incompatibility of the gasket from the OM460 engine. Which is installed by mechanics out of inexperience, because their numbers match.

This solution leads to failure of the cylinder head. The car owner also has to spend money on major repairs of the Mercedes engine.

Another reason is wear on the camshaft cams of the OM457 engine. It is recommended to dismantle the worn shaft and install a new one. However, it happens that during dismantling, an experienced mechanic discovers the destruction of the key pusher groove. This leads to increased repair costs.

All this indicates a breakdown of the PLD. Experienced mechanics do not recommend disassembling a Mercedes engine in a garage and repairing the PLD “on your knees”. Since inexperienced assistance or incorrect diagnosis of a breakdown will lead to a major overhaul, or even a complete replacement of the entire Mercedes engine.

Knock of bearings of the OM457 engine. The car owner can hear when idling when the throttle valve opens. The knocking is rhythmic, as if someone is beating out a fraction. This means that the connecting rod bearings have failed.

But the knock of bad main bearings is a little different. This dull and metallic knocking sound at the bottom of the crankcase can also be detected with a stethoscope while the Mercedes engine is idling.

Despite such malfunctions, the Mercedes OM457 engine runs for a long time. Almost all special equipment runs on similar diesel internal combustion engines. Therefore, experienced mechanics do not recommend replacing any spare parts on the OM457 motor yourself. Since this will lead to a decrease in the life of the unit.
