Brand tractor CLAAS 900 series

The AXION series of energy-rich machines includes the 940 model, which differs from previous developments:

  • improved layout;
  • increased power;
  • the presence of a satellite driving system;
  • improved ergonomics and comfort of the operator’s workplace;
  • less labor-intensive maintenance of the chassis, systems and units of the tractor as a whole.

The universal tractor Claas Axion 940 occupies a leading position in ratings of productivity, quality of work performed, and cost-effectiveness of maintenance.

CLAAS studies the efficiency of the AXION tractor in seeding work

In the current agricultural season, CLAAS experts will continue to analyze the efficiency of tractor equipment in combination with trailed agricultural machines, including seeding systems. At the same time, it is planned to significantly expand the list of cultivated crops on which CLAAS tractors will be used in order to determine the optimal settings of machines and trailed implements based on the results of the work.

For example, based on the results of demonstrations of the last agricultural season, the most effective performance indicators were recorded for the AXION 940 tractor with an Amazone seeder when sowing soybeans, rapeseed and barley. Tests, among other things, took place on the basis of farms in the Primorsky Territory and the Irkutsk region. The AXION 940 tractor worked with Amazone DMC 9000-2 and Amazone Primera DMC 9000 seeders.

It is worth noting that at least five demonstrations were carried out in each region, which allowed farmers and CLAAS specialists to evaluate the performance characteristics of machines and equipment in a variety of conditions.

When sowing soybeans, the optimal results from the point of view of productivity and fuel consumption were those achieved at a seed and fertilizer planting depth of 3 cm, on dry and medium-moisture soil, as well as with low contamination with crop residues. In particular, the operating speed of the AXION 940 tractor averaged from 13 to 15 km/h with fuel consumption from 4.2 to 4.3 l/ha, and productivity reached 7.4 ha/h. At the same time, even higher contamination with crop residues did not prevent the AXION 940 in combination with Amazone seeding equipment from showing its high efficiency: 7.3 ha/hour with a fairly low fuel consumption of 4.3 l/ha.

The best performance during sowing of rapeseed was obtained at a seed and fertilizer placement depth of 3 to 5 cm, depending on the depth of the wet layer, and at an operating speed of 12 to 14 km/h. Fuel consumption in this operating mode ranged from 4.0 to 4.8 l/ha. The best performance indicators were recorded at 7.7 ha/h, and the minimum - 4.5 ha/h. The key factor here was the organization of logistics: timely delivery of seeds and fertilizers, as well as the speed of their loading. Thus, depending on the technology used, the time for filling the bunker varied from 8 minutes to 30 minutes.

During sowing of barley, the AXION tractor with the Amazone Primera DMC 9000 seeder demonstrated a productivity of around 6.0-6.5 ha/h, at the same operating speed of about 12-14 km/h. This was due to the fact that the seeding rate, which was almost 70 times higher than rapeseed, required a larger number of loads. Fuel consumption remained virtually unchanged: 4.0-4.5 l/ha.

The machine operators participating in the demonstration tests noted the high power of the tractor, minimal fuel consumption, as well as the efficiency of the transmission in automatic mode. The latter, among other things, allowed the tractor to quickly gain speed.

This year, demonstration work of CLAAS equipment will continue and will cover an even larger range of crops, including niche ones. This will make it possible to collect additional technical and economic data on the operating features of CLAAS tractors and seeding systems in various climatic and soil conditions. The results will help farmers seeking to diversify production by cultivating rare and high-margin crops to more clearly plan their activities and calculate the economic justification for projects.

Design

The Class 940 was designed for the Apennine Mountain Railways, and especially for the Rome-Sulmona-Pescara line, an important coast-to-coast railway that had steep grades (up to 2.7%); until then they were serviced by 0-6-0 locomotives such as the FS class 851, which became inadequate for growing needs. It was therefore decided to build a locomotive with eight driving wheels, adapting the frames, boiler and engine. Class 740 to the tank design and also added a rear wheel to the wheelbase so the new design can move well both forward and backward.

The locomotives were built from 1922 to 1924 at the Officine Meccaniche, Reggiane and Officine Meccaniche e Navali di Napoli, 50 in total.[1][2]
