Not all models of chainsaws can be adjusted at home, since special keys are only available in service centers operated by the manufacturer. Such measures have been taken to prevent tool malfunctions due to incorrect adjustments made by inexperienced craftsmen.

What else is important to evaluate when choosing a chainsaw?

1. Length of the bar (this is the working tool of the saw). If you are taking a tool for home use, a tire 35-40 cm long will be enough, or in extreme cases, 45 cm. A longer tire is more difficult to handle and requires special skills. The chain must be tensioned according to the instructions (tension rates and adjusting screws are shown in the pictures below). If the chain is too tight or loose, it will cause premature wear or even breakage of the chain.

Many experts recommend replacing the drive sprocket, bar and chain immediately after purchasing a new saw. This recommendation makes sense, especially for the cheapest models, since it is often impossible to even adjust the chain tension due to the eccentricity of the drive and driven sprocket. But if this is your first chainsaw, it makes sense to practice and “kill” a set of standard parts, acquiring skills. Then install new parts of a higher class.

To extend the life of a tire, it must be rotated periodically to ensure even wear on the top and bottom edges. As practice shows, a tire needs to be changed after four chains and two sprockets have worked with it.

Kickback protection (chain brake handle) is a mandatory safety feature. It consists of instantly stopping the chain in the event of a rebound, failure or kickback of the tire. What a kickback is is clear from the figure below. The brake actuation is duplicated. The protection is triggered by pressing the chain brake handle or by the inertial rebound of the handle during a reverse impact. Starting a new product is quite simple. In the vast majority of samples, the carburetor is adjusted from the factory and does not require outside intervention. However, one should not discount the costs of mass production in the Middle Kingdom: some users learn about carburetor adjustments only in service centers, where they bring the product after a couple of hours of unsuccessful witchcraft over it.

For the first start, you need to pull out the choke lever, pump up the fuel with primer, turn on the key, and then pull the starter cable a couple of times to crank the crankshaft. Step-by-step adjustment algorithm

Before adjusting, you need to make sure that the air filter is clean. If it is clogged, there may not be enough air for complete combustion of the fuel mixture. Therefore, the engine does not work correctly. Perhaps no adjustment is required, but the filter needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Remove the filter and try how the engine works without it. If good, then the problem is in the filter.

The presence of carbon deposits in the spark arrester grille and muffler is also checked. If the exhaust gases are obstructed, the engine is also not working properly and the problem is not the carburetor setting.

Standard adjustment

The manufacturer of the Stihl MS 361 chainsaw in the Operation Manual (p. 37) recommends the following carburetor adjustment algorithm:

• Turn the high speed adjusting bolt H clockwise until it stops, but no more than 3/4 of a turn.
• Tighten the idle speed adjusting bolt L clockwise until it stops. Then turn it counterclockwise 1/4 turn.
• Start the engine and warm up for 7-10 minutes.
• Then the idle speed is adjusted by adjusting the LA thrust screw while the engine is running. It is screwed in clockwise, increasing idle speed until the chain begins to move. Then the LA screw is unscrewed back 1/2 turn.
• If, when adjusting with screw LA, it is not possible to correctly adjust the idle speed (the engine stalls or the chain spins), they are adjusted with screw L. It is unscrewed 1/4 turn. Then continue adjusting with the LA screw, unscrewing it counterclockwise until the chain stops. Then in the same direction about 1/2 more turn. But so that the engine does not stall at idle.

Turning any screw changes the factory setting

Therefore, it is extremely important to remember or write down the number of turns by which the position of the screws changed during adjustment. For example, if the screw is tightened all the way, it must be tightened, be sure to count the revolutions

In the fuel supply system, if the chainsaw is not working, there are several reasons that could lead to its malfunction:

1. There is a blockage in the fuel filter.
2. The hole in the tank lid is clogged.
3. Insufficient fuel mixture.

How to troubleshoot

If there is no fuel supply to the engine, first of all, you need to disconnect the fuel hose from the carburetor and make sure that the fuel mixture will flow from it. In good condition, the fluid should flow freely. If the liquid does not flow, or flows weakly, then it is necessary to clear the hole in the tank lid from contamination with a needle or wire.

The fuel filter, together with the suction hose, is removed through the neck of the filler hole using a hook, which can be used as a piece of wire. The next steps are to clean the filter or replace it.

It is recommended to change the filter every three months.

A lack of fuel supply from the carburetor to the engine chamber is possible due to an unbalanced ratio of the combustible mixture and air when mixed in the carburetor. This means that the following are contaminated:

• air filter;
• carburetor channels;
• filter mesh.
