The Komatsu PC300-8 crawler excavator is a special equipment produced by the Japanese. This is a convenient, maneuverable, unpretentious and reliable model for universal use. It is used for road, construction, quarry work, to solve production problems in mining, industry, and life support systems. The set of technical characteristics of the Komatsu PC300-8 makes it one of the most popular excavator models on the world market.

This machine belongs to the middle class of special equipment. It represents the new, eighth generation of excavators within the RS300 production line and has an updated modification RS300-8MO. In this article we are considering a modified version of special equipment. The Komatsu PC300-8 crawler excavator is the latest development in its production series. When designing it, the shortcomings of previous generations were taken into account.

Engine

Komatsu PC300 excavators are equipped with new Komatsu SAA6D114E-3 diesel engines, equipped with precision multi-stage diesel fuel injection systems, which are regulated by the motor controller. This innovative design, developed by a Japanese company specifically for construction vehicles, ensures low emissions of nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. The effective method of coordinating the operation of the power unit and hydraulic system used on this model helps to significantly reduce diesel fuel consumption and ensure economical, energy-saving operation wherever possible.

Komatsu SAA6D114E-3 is a four-stroke six-cylinder in-line liquid-cooled engine with a turbocharger and a sequential charge air cooling system. The working volume of this engine is 8.27 liters. Its rated net power is 187 kW (255 hp), and its gross power is 194 kW (264 hp). This engine meets the requirements of EPA Tier 3 and EU Stage 3A environmental standards, which regulate exhaust gas toxicity. However, this does not affect the power and performance of the special vehicle as a whole. The cylinder diameter of the SAA6D114E-3 motor is 114 cm, the piston stroke is 135 cm.

The Komatsu PC300 crawler excavator can perform all kinds of work in six operating modes: P (reinforced power); E (economical); L (load-lifting); B (for working with a hydraulic hammer); ATT/r (reinforced for attachments); ATT/e (economical for attachments). This ensures the flexibility with which the performance of the work equipment can be adjusted to suit the job at hand.

Seriously hot parts of the engine and fan drive are surrounded and protected on the excavator by special thermal barriers. In addition, it has a partition installed between the pump and engine compartments. This partition eliminates the risk of oil splashing onto the engine in cases of damage to the hydraulic hoses. The fuel tank is installed with an increased volume (up to 605 liters of diesel fuel), subjected to special treatment that prevents the formation of rust.

High level of operational safety

In the presented model, much attention is paid to the safety of its operation. The machine can be safely used without fear for the life and health of either its operator, or other people on the work site around the excavator, or materials or equipment. This is achieved by the following technical solutions:

  • Protected ROPS cabin. In terms of safety, it meets the requirements of international standards ISO 12117-2 and ISO OPG. It absorbs significant shock loads well, and the guards and retractable belt protect the operator from falling objects and injury in the event of a machine rollover.
  • Safety fences and partitions. Thermal guards are installed around the drive, motor and fan to protect adjacent mechanisms from overheating. A strong partition between the pump and engine compartments will prevent oil from splashing onto the engine in the event of a hydraulic hose rupture.
  • Increased visibility of windows and mirrors. The Komatsu PC300-8 excavator has a wide window with a panoramic view, which is also available in previous modifications. The eighth generation of this series is also equipped with additional viewing mirrors on the sides and rear, and the side mirror providing rear visibility has been noticeably enlarged.
  • Presence of a locking lever. A simple mechanism prevents accidental movement of equipment by cutting off the supply of hydraulic pressure. The excavator engine can only be started if the locking lever is engaged. This property is provided by the function of starting the engine from a neutral position.

For maximum operating safety, the machine can also be additionally equipped with a rear view camera. This option provides control of the area behind special equipment. In addition, all parts of the excavator that the operator can walk on are equipped with durable anti-slip flooring, which is especially important in winter.

Hydraulic system Komatsu PC300

The model is equipped with Komatsu's HydrauMind (Hydraulic Mechanical Intelligence New Design) hydromechanical design - closed center, load sensing valves and pressure compensation valves. This is a closed center hydraulic system equipped with load sensing and pressure compensation valves. The maximum oil flow is at 535 liters per minute. The number of selectable operating modes is six.

The hydraulic system consists of two axial piston motors that work to move the excavator (equipped with a parking brake) and one that works to rotate the platform (equipped with a platform holding brake). The control circuit is powered by a valve with autonomous pressure reduction. Piston pumps, variable displacement.

The central frame of the Komatsu PC300 excavator is cruciform. The crawler frame is of box section. Sealed tracks are installed with lubricated and sealed pins, with hydraulic tension adjuster. The number of shoes is forty-five on each side (48 pieces in the LC modification); number of support rollers – two on each side; the number of road wheels is seven on each side (8 pcs. in the LC modification). The rotation system of the Komatsu PC300 excavator has a hydrostatic drive. The platform rotation gearbox is a gear transmission. The turntable is lubricated in a lubricant bath. The service brake is a hydraulic lock. The platform rotation is blocked by a mechanical disc brake. The platform rotation speed is 9.5 revolutions per minute.

The maximum tractive effort is 264 kN, or 26.9 tons. It provides excellent performance in terms of ability to climb inclines (up to seventy percent!) The maximum travel speed of the Komatsu PC300 crawler excavator is: at high speed - 5.5 km/h; at low speed - 3.2 km/h. The track chain of the Komatsu PC3OO excavator has a length of 4.625 m or 4.955 m (in the LC modification); width 60 cm or 70 cm (LC version).

Komatsu PC300 is a universal unit belonging to the middle class of specialized machines. It combines excellent performance characteristics and excellent workmanship. Proper use of its features allows you to effectively use the machine when carrying out the following types of work:

  • digging trenches for oil and gas pipelines;
  • carrying out stripping operations;

Maintenance Features

The SAA6D114E-3 engine oil filter and fuel drain valve are located separately, on one side of the cabin. The oil cooler and radiator are placed in one row, so removing, cleaning and reinstalling them is not a problem.

The oil change on the excavator is carried out using an environmentally friendly drain valve, which prevents soil contamination in the event of a possible leak. The basic package also includes a high-performance air filter with innovative seals. They prevent its rapid clogging with a subsequent decrease in the performance of the special machine. The Komatsu PC300 excavator also has a diesel fuel pre-filter with water separation.

The engine oil and its oil filter must be replaced every 500 hours; hydraulic system oil - every 5 thousand operating hours; hydraulic system oil filter - every thousand operating hours.

As an additional option, the manufacturer offers installation of BMRC bushings and synthetic shims on all fingers of the working equipment, except for the bucket fingers. This option allows you to extend the lubrication interval to five hundred operating hours.

Digital technologies and computer diagnostics

The use of modern computer technologies in the Komatsu PC300-8 excavator simplifies the management of special equipment, increases the accuracy of diagnostics and the quality of repairs. Digital capabilities allow you to constantly monitor the current values ​​of key parameters.

  • Liquid crystal display. Installed in the operator’s cabin and shows him current information about the status of the machine. Large sizes combined with high resolution. Information is displayed on the screen in one of 13 languages, including Russian. The display is equipped with a panel with function keys.
  • Developed display system. On the operator's working panel next to the monitor there are light indicators of nine important parameters. These include speed, fuel consumption, oil temperature in the hydraulic system, operating mode in which the excavator is currently operating, and a number of other indicators.
  • Automatic EMMS controller. This is a system for complete monitoring of equipment condition. It monitors the oil level in the hydraulic system and engine, fuel reserves, remaining battery charge, degree of filter clogging and all other points. In the event of a malfunction, the system displays a message on the LCD display.
  • Maintenance control. The function is also performed by the EMMS controller. It monitors the number of engine hours worked and prevents you from missing an oil or filter change. When the interval is about to expire, the system automatically displays a corresponding message on the operator's LCD display.
  • Diagnosis and storage of breakdowns. The excavator's computer system (the same EMMS controller) stores information about faults in memory: their type, the time when they were recorded, the values ​​of parameters in the faulty state. This information greatly simplifies and speeds up diagnosis and increases its accuracy.

The entire control system of the Komatsu PC300-8 crawler excavator is tuned to maximize its efficiency while reasonably reducing fuel consumption. After changing the task performed by the equipment, advice on switching to a less energy-consuming operating mode is displayed on the monitor. The operator can make this decision independently by manually checking the information on average fuel consumption.

Operator's workplace

The cabin has significant interior space - it is one of the most spacious in the middle class of excavators. It has a width of 2.995 m. The operator's workplace is equipped with good sound and vibration insulation. Minimal vibration is ensured by installing the cabin on viscous damping supports, with an additional spring and an increased working stroke. The cabin is also distinguished by excellent tightness and, accordingly, dust and heat protection from weather and climatic conditions outside. Air conditioning is not provided as standard; it is offered for an additional fee as an additional option. Another additional option is a rear view camera that displays the “picture” on a color display.

During the production of the cabin, all current operator safety rules are taken into account: a rigid frame is used to protect a person in cases of accidental overturning of a heavy special vehicle or heavy objects falling onto the cabin.

The operator's seat is equipped with a full range of settings and adjustments. It can even be brought to a completely horizontal position. It is also possible to adjust the control levers and armrests of the chair individually. The standard equipment of the excavator also includes an anti-slip rubber mat and larger rear-view mirrors.

The liquid crystal display has a larger diagonal than is usually provided on excavators, and a fairly high screen resolution. This color multilingual (13 languages, Russian is also available) monitor guarantees safety, accuracy and smooth execution of all work operations.

It displays the following indicators and sensors: engine speed retarder; temperature of the hydraulic system oil and engine coolant; operating mode; diesel fuel level and consumption; movement speed. Among these, there is also a special eco-pointer on the control panel of the universal color monitor (on the right edge of the display). It is designed for optimal, economical and environmentally friendly work. In order for work to occur with effective economical diesel fuel consumption and a reduced percentage of CO2 in the exhaust gases, it is necessary to keep this scale of this economizer in the green range.

Spacious and comfortable work cabin

The Komatsu PC300-8 is designed with great attention to the health and performance of its operator. His workplace is equipped with everything necessary for normal work throughout the entire shift. The cabin is comfortable and has plenty of space. This is ensured by the following technical solutions:

  • Good cabin soundproofing. Hydraulic equipment, air conditioning and motor operate at low noise levels in principle. In addition to this, the design of the cabin itself, in combination with soundproofing materials, absorbs a significant part of the sounds, allowing only a small fraction of them to pass inside.
  • Low vibration level. The cabin is installed on viscous supports with damping properties, that is, to absorb vibration vibrations. The supports have an increased working stroke and are equipped with an additional spring. Technically, they are a suspension that is combined with a high-rigidity base.
  • Comfortable operator seat. This is especially important for operator health and performance. The backrest can even be tilted to a completely horizontal orientation, and the seat itself can be adjusted in height, as well as the armrests. The LCD monitor and all control panels and consoles are conveniently located next to the seat.
  • Tightness and microclimate. The cabin doors close tightly, allowing you to maintain a comfortable microclimate for the operator inside. Automatic air conditioning and an air filter deliver cool air to your face, and a pressure of 6 mm of water above the external pressure keeps dust out.

Thanks to low vibration and a comfortable seat, the operator's spine is subject to minimal stress. And clean, dust-free air at a comfortable temperature reduces fatigue and allows you to concentrate as much as possible on the tasks at hand throughout the entire work shift.

Working equipment

In addition to the standard bucket - a backhoe, with a capacity of 1.4 m3, special-purpose buckets are also provided for Komatsu PC3OO excavators, namely:

  • trapezoidal (trench) bucket - for digging trenches and performing drainage work. Its capacity “with a cap” is 1.1 cubic meters;
  • bucket for finishing slopes. It holds about 41 cubic meters “with a cap”;
  • bucket with ripper - for working with hard and rocky materials. Its capacity “with a cap” is equal to 0.9 cubic meters.

The working equipment can operate in smooth control or high power modes. In the first case, the boom maintains its floating position and, moving upward, reduces the lift of the front of the machine. This speeds up making the collection of soil material and surface cleaning smooth and fast at the same time. The presence of 2 drain hoses increases the efficiency of the hydraulic system. When the handle is straightened, part of the oil drains directly into the tank, ensuring its smooth movement.

In high power mode, the boom lowering force increases. This increases the efficiency of digging triangular and square trenches in hard soils. When the maximum power boost is activated, the soil cutting force increases further. When digging requires maximum cutting force, the operator can switch to high power mode with the simple press of a button.

High performance and availability

This is a key advantage for any work equipment. It produces all structural parts and elements for all its excavators and other types of machines itself. Therefore, they operate with maximum efficiency.

Advantages of the technique:

  • Powerful traction force. This parameter has gradually increased in each new generation of the PC300 product line. For the eighth modification of the model, it is 264 kilonewtons, which corresponds to 26.9 tons. This greatly facilitates steering and allows the excavator to overcome inclines.
  • Efficient soil cutting. The base force generated by the handle is 160 kilonewtons (kN), which corresponds to 16.3 tons. It can be increased by 7% to 171 kN (17.4 tons). The base cutting force of the bucket is 212 kN (21.6 tons) and also increases by 7% to 227 kN, which corresponds to a bending force of 23.1 tons.
  • Two boom control modes. The general standard mode provides for smooth movement of the working element and is suitable for most types of work. If more force is required, you can turn on the high-power mode, designed for cutting hard soil or crushing rock.
  • Smooth handle movement. This property increases the speed and safety of work, as well as the power of the force. The design is ensured by the presence of two drain hoses. When the handle is straightened, some of the liquid drains into the tank. When the handle is bent, oil flows back, increasing the power of the force.

In addition, the Komatsu PC300-8 excavator can operate in one of six modes, each of which is designed to maximize energy efficiency based on the actual load.

There is a standard power consumption mode (economical) and a high power mode. The same two levels are provided for the operation of attachments. There are two more special formats: hydraulic hammer and lifting. When installing a hydraulic hammer and turning on this mode, the lifting capacity of the Komatsu PC300-8 increases by 7%. This is achieved by increasing the pressure in the hydraulic system.

This model has earned good user reviews. This applies to both the build quality and the materials from which the special vehicle is made. No one has any serious complaints about the hydraulics - it works stably under any operating conditions, without jerks, jolts or similar unpleasant manifestations. The “tower” also turns extremely softly and smoothly, which is good news during long hours of monotonous work.

The cabin equipment also deserves praise, but there are some problems with the heater - its operation is not always sufficient to ensure comfort in the excavator operating cabin in harsh northern conditions.
