Recommendations for choosing a demolition excavator

You can do a small job with a big machine, but not vice versa. A construction company that does not take this rule into account when choosing a demolition excavator with an extended boom may not complete its job on time.

There is a widespread misconception that demolition excavators have only a narrow specialization. If you choose the right machine, it will be multifunctional and you can use it to perform many different jobs.

Here are some tips on how to choose a demolition excavator.

Select the correct boom configuration. When choosing a demolition excavator, it is important to choose a machine with a boom that has additional equipment (for example, additional modules for the boom), which will make the excavator universal and allow it to be used to destroy various buildings and structures, as well as perform other types of work. For example, in commercial multi-story buildings such as hotels, the upper floors may use lighter steel structures than the ground floors, and the excavator will be primarily required to be able to reach the upper floors (i.e., the longest possible boom) and the permissible weight attachments (hydraulic shears) on the boom may not be so large. For mid-level buildings (or mid-rise buildings) such as industrial buildings, the boom will not be as long, but it will need to carry heavy attachments that can destroy the strong structure of an industrial building. The lower floors of buildings are usually built from the strongest materials of great thickness. The excavator will need a fairly short boom, but very strong, capable of carrying the heaviest implements.

Finally, the demolition backhoe must be able to dig and move soil to excavate the foundation. Therefore, when choosing a demolition excavator, it is recommended to purchase a model that also has the option of a “digger” boom.

Volvo Construction Equipment's three new generation (HR version) specialist demolition excavator models - EC380E, EC480E and EC750E - with operating weights ranging from 46.8 to 103.03 tons are equipped with a Multi-Demolition (MD) boom in two configurations (straight and "angular") and "digging" boom, which can be extended with an additional section.

Hydraulic locking mechanisms make it easy to dismantle the digging boom and install an extended one. There is a “quick boom assembly” system. For example, one operator can change from a reach boom to a digger boom on an EC480E HR excavator in 45 minutes without the assistance of another worker.

The strength of the components and the hydraulic power of the new generation machines have been improved, and the design has been modernized to increase the maximum weight of the implement, working height and productivity. The excavator's stable operation zone is 360° - the machine does not need to turn around on the spot, move, just rotate the superstructure, which saves working time.

Excavators are equipped with a water dust suppression system with four nozzles - two on each side of the boom, pump capacity - 30 l/min. The system also includes a washing gun with a hose, which can be used to wash the excavator with a high-pressure water jet.

The cabin is specially designed for demolition excavators. There is a mechanism for tilting the cabin by 30°. Two video cameras are installed on the boom, improving visibility of the working area. The reinforced glass on the roof also expands the viewing area and protects the operator from falling objects, and is equipped with a washer system and a windshield wiper. The front and right windows are triplex. The cabin is protected from falling objects by a grille mounted on the excavator frame. The cockpit contains a liquid crystal display of the control system. The optional Total moment indicator safety system warns the operator if the machine's workload is approaching the maximum permissible load.

The track width of the chassis is adjusted hydraulically. The extremely reliable sliding mechanism is a unique Volvo development.

Choose a demolition excavator that is specifically designed and built in a factory, rather than a demolition machine that has been converted from a regular construction excavator. Once you have determined which boom configuration you need, you will need to decide whether to use a company that converts conventional construction excavators into extended demolition equipment or purchase a custom-built demolition excavator.

Crawler excavators under the CASE Construction Equipment have long established themselves as efficient and reliable solutions for the demolition industry. These excavator modifications are offered on the Russian market, as it is simultaneously the official dealer of CASE Construction Equipment and Kocurek Excavators Ltd. And it is precisely this circumstance that allows CASE to feel confident in this segment of the construction market.

Based on excavators, CASE offers solutions for dismantling and demolition work at heights of up to 45 m. The main CASE models that are offered for modernization for high-rise work are the CX380C, CX490C, CX500C, CX700B and the heaviest machine in the product line, the CX800B. These machines allow for dismantling and demolition: in dense urban areas; on the territory of existing enterprises; when dismantling objects affected by accidents and emergencies (fires, cracks, partial or complete collapse of load-bearing structures, etc.); at facilities that pose a chemical and biological hazard; close to existing air and ground utilities.

To modify the base machine, various options can be used depending on the specifics of the work: upgrading the base boom to create a quick-release mechanical modular connection (used for quickly replacing booms); upgrading the top of the boom - in a straight position for breaking and in a curved position for digging; quick release hydraulic connections between base boom and standard digging equipment; storage stand for standard digging equipment; tilting cab - a modification of the excavator frame to install a cab tilt mechanism, carried out by two hydraulic cylinders (the cab tilt mechanism also provides a lowering valve in an emergency in case of operator illness or engine stop); cabin protection against falling objects - FOPS level 2, ISO standard 10262-1998; control panel – for changing operating modes (destruction, digging, etc.); additional counterweight. Also available: 3-section demolition boom/intermediate arm/main arm; reinforced hydraulic cylinders for the intermediate and main handles, including check valves; stand for storage and transportation of destruction equipment; centralized lubrication system; steel tubes and hoses; reinforced trapezoid for attachments; reinforced hydraulic cylinder of attachments; protection of hydraulic cylinder of attachments, etc.

is also ready to offer equipping CASE excavators with extra-long working equipment; telescopic handles for large digging depths; equipment for reloading metal, timber, bulk materials and carries out modifications, additional equipment and preparation of excavators to perform non-standard types of work.

All equipment is carefully designed and manufactured from high-strength Strenx steel for long service life. The equipment can be fully installed at Kocurek's UK factory or can be supplied as a kit for on-site self-assembly by professionally competent technicians with all necessary tools.

In addition to equipment supply, it offers equipment commissioning, operator training, warranty service and spare parts supply.

When deciding to convert a conventional excavator, you need to take into account that if questions arise regarding repairs, warranty, etc., you will have to deal with two companies - the manufacturer of the base machine and the one that converted it. And it is quite possible that both companies will refuse warranty repairs, holding each other responsible for the malfunction. Therefore, it is recommended to purchase a factory-made demolition excavator; with it, you will deal with only one manufacturer, and issues of repair and delivery of spare parts will be resolved faster.

In addition, a machine specially designed for this work equipment will certainly work with greater productivity than a converted one. In a specially manufactured car, everything is thought out, calculated, a special cabin with protective grilles, additional safety systems are installed, all components work as a single whole.

Typically, factory-built demolition excavators have easier booms and attachments to replace.

Like some other companies, JCB does not have special models, but only versions of excavators “for dismantling work” (HRD, High Reach Demolition) based on conventional construction machines (using specialized equipment such as extended booms from third-party suppliers, for example, the company Kocurek).

There are already many examples of conversion of JCB excavators of models from 22 to 37 tons of the JS series and the new X series. The machines are equipped with comfortable soundproof CommandPlus cabs with a heater, air conditioning and an air-suspended seat. The cabin is equipped with additional protective grilles. For better visibility, a camera is installed on the handle, the image from which is displayed on the monitor in the cockpit. An optional 30° cab tilt mechanism is available.

Connections of pipelines of working equipment are made using quick-release couplings. The working equipment is reinforced and designed for harsh operating conditions. The chassis frame is all-welded, X-shaped. The hydraulic system components are supplied by a Japanese company.

Differences in designs. If you choose a factory-made machine, you should keep in mind that machines from different manufacturers have different designs. Some have already been mentioned above, for example, boom configurations and the ability to easily change from a long boom to a “digger”. Also, not all excavators have a cab that can tilt in order to improve visibility when working at high altitudes and reduce fatigue for the operator, who does not need to raise his head high.

The biggest differences are in the design of the chassis. It is recommended to choose a demolition excavator with a chassis that has the largest support area, as it ensures the stability of the machine during operation. If the track width of the undercarriage can be adjusted, this is very convenient; if necessary, you can increase stability (the track is wide) and also simplify the transportation of the excavator (the track is narrow, the machine is oversized). Thanks to the ability to increase the track width, a circular (360°) working area of the demolition excavator is ensured and the working time costs are reduced - the machine does not need to move and turn around to more conveniently position the working equipment; simply rotate the superstructure.

At the beginning of 2022, Kobelco introduced the new generation of demolition excavators mod. SK350DLC, SK400DLC, SK550DLC.

Maud. The SK400DLC and SK550DLC are equipped with a variable track track. The counterweight is composed of two parts.

Kobelco demolition excavators use conventional excavator booms as well as the exclusive NEXT coupling device for mounting the extended 3-section boom, intermediate module and Separate boom. The booms have a modular design. Using the NEXT connecting device, you can easily and quickly change booms and other working equipment of Kobelco excavators (within 20 minutes), pipelines are connected easily and quickly.

The excavator's electronic engine control system provides high fuel economy; the operator can choose from three engine operating modes.

The special soundproofed cabin is equipped with an automatic climate control system, a new color multifunction display, which displays important information about the operation of the machine, an image from a rear view camera, settings for the hydraulic circuit of working equipment, etc. Images from rear and side view cameras can be displayed on a separate display. Seat on air suspension, heated. The safety system warns with an audible signal about the danger of the machine tipping over and the possibility of a collision of the working equipment with the cabin, and automatically stops the movement of the implement. The position of the working equipment is determined with high accuracy. Glasses are strengthened. The front glass is laminated. The front and top windows are protected by grilles. Front and top window wipers are standard. The KOMEXS telematics system allows you to remotely control the operation of the excavator. The cabin can tilt up to 30°.

The hydraulic system of the machines includes locking valves that prevent the boom from falling in the event of a hydraulic hose rupture. The standard equipment includes an automatic centralized lubrication system.

The top model in the range, the SK550D LC, weighs 64.6 tonnes with a 271 kW engine and has a working height of 27.5 m.

Very useful design features: the ability to easily dismantle the excavator tracked carts and the ability of the machine to independently, without the involvement of other equipment, dismantle and install its components for transportation.

And of course, it is recommended to consult with specialists from the dealer or manufacturer so as not to make a mistake when choosing a demolition excavator.

Volvo SE presented the first excavator for demolition of buildings and structures in Russia

The new EC750E HR excavator is designed to perform complex demolition work and can be used in confined spaces.
The excavator with an operating weight of 103.03 tons is produced at the Volvo CE plant in South Korea. The maximum boom head height of the EC750E HR is 36 m, its reach is 10 m. The machine is equipped with a dust suppression system and a camera on the boom head. The EC750E HR uses the company's patented modular connection of hydraulic lines. It allows you to re-equip an excavator from a demolition configuration to an excavation configuration in a very short time. In the demolition version, the EC750E HR comes with two boom options and can be equipped with up to 3.6t attachments for work at heights up to 36m or up to 5t for work at heights up to 26m. The machine is available in an excavation configuration with one boom of variable geometry and can be operated with a “hitch” of up to 6.5 tons for work at a boom head height of up to 18 m. The hydraulic cylinders of the boom and attachments are additionally protected by steel plates.

The new excavator is equipped with the latest generation Volvo CE engine of its own design, Stage V environmental standard, with a power of 392 kW. The electronic control system regulates the cyclic fuel supply depending on the engine operating mode and its temperature. As a result, machine performance is optimized. Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology (V-ACT) and Auto Idle significantly improve fuel efficiency.

The new electro-hydraulic hydraulic flow control system and main hydraulic distributor provide high productivity, digging power and maneuvering precision while maintaining fuel efficiency. Important functions include Flow Summation, Boom Priority, Stick Priority, Swing Priority, Regeneration System and Power Boost. Boom and arm safety valves prevent sudden lowering during operation. In addition, the EC750E HR is equipped with the Contronics telematics system, which allows real-time monitoring of the operation of all components and assemblies, displaying diagnostic data on the display in the cockpit.

The robust design of the EC750E HR undercarriage ensures high machine stability. The lower frame with sliding trolleys is specially designed for the demolition excavator. It is heavier and wider than the larger EC950E model. At the same time, the demolition excavator is quite easy to transport thanks to removable tracked carriages and the main counterweight.

The EC750E HR's comfortable, wide-view cab is equipped with air conditioning, heating and FOPS protection. It can tilt back 30°, reducing operator fatigue when working at high altitudes. To reduce the level of shock and vibration loads, the cabin is installed on hydraulic damping supports. Along with additional sound insulation, this ensures low noise levels. The seat has 12 adjustments, which provides comfort for operators of any size.

Hydraulic shears

The hydraulic shears used today are much more advanced than those produced 5 years ago. After all, every year manufacturers strive to increase the efficiency of equipment by reducing the operating cycle time, simplifying the design, and using wear-resistant materials. Hydraulic shears allow you to quickly separate pieces of destructible building structures from each other by cutting steel parts and reinforcement instead of gas welding. Models with cutting forces up to 740 tons are capable of cutting steel parts up to 70 mm thick, such as I-beams. Hydraulic shears cut precisely, accurately and very quickly. Working time is saved and the likelihood of injury to workers is reduced.

When choosing, you must proceed from the range of tasks that will have to be solved using this equipment.

In the warehouse you can always find the necessary model of hydraulic shears: specialized and universal with replaceable and quick-release jaws for primary and secondary destruction of concrete and reinforced concrete, as well as for cutting sheet and profiled metal. This equipment has a European quality mark and is produced in Italy under the famous Russian brand Delta.

offers a wide range of modern models of Italian and South Korean production, made of high-quality materials, namely hydraulic shears:

  • universal for the initial stage of dismantling buildings and structures constructed from various materials: concrete, reinforced concrete, steel;
  • for metal cutting – for cutting metal profiles, reinforcement, steel;
  • crushers – for ground crushing of fragments of reinforced concrete slabs of different sizes.
