BelAZ 7540 is a compact mining dump truck capable of transporting up to 30 tons of cargo. The machine was developed for work in quarries and open-pit mines with difficult mining conditions.
Production of the BelAZ 7540 began in 1992. Among the brand's mining dump trucks, this model is considered one of the smallest. The development of the machine is related to the needs of customers for mobile and maneuverable transport with high carrying capacity. At the same time, the BelAZ 7540 is a whole family, which includes several models, the difference between which lies in the dimensions and type of engine installed.
BelAZ 7540 is adapted to harsh operating conditions. The equipment can be used not only for transporting rocks, but also in the construction of hydraulic structures and highways. The machine can withstand temperature loads from -50 to +50 degrees. The special design allows you to maintain mobility on mountain roads and allows movement along unpaved routes.
Modifications
- BelAZ 75405 is one of the early modifications of the family, the production of which has now been completed;
- BelAZ 7540A is the basic version with a length of 7110 mm and a height of 3930 mm. The model is equipped with a YaMZ-240PM2 unit (420 hp);
- BelAZ 7540B - a design analogue of the BelAZ 7540A model with a YaMZ-240M2-1 engine (360 hp);
- BelAZ 7540E - modification with a length of 7160 mm and a height of 3900 mm, equipped with a YaMZ-240M2-1 engine (360 hp);
- BelAZ 7540D – version with a foreign engine DEUTZ BF 8M 1015 (395 hp);
- BelAZ 7540K - modification with a Cummins QSM11-C engine (405 hp) and a length of 7410 mm.
How BelAZ was created
The history of this plant, and with it the car, dates back to the post-war period. In the difficult and distant year of 1948, a machine-building peat plant was built in the city of Zhodino, Minsk region.
In the first years, it practically did not work, but in 1958, the Minsk Automobile Plant transferred the production of MAZ-525 dump trucks with a carrying capacity of 25 tons. Although these products were not distinguished by quality, the production of these cars was carried out for quite a long time. At the same time, new models were developed. So, in 1961, the BelAZ-540 with a lifting capacity of 27 tons rolled off the plant’s assembly line. At the same time, the plant’s designers created a vehicle with a fantastic lifting capacity of 40 tons.
The plant has repeatedly received various high awards, including at international exhibitions. But this is not the limit for BelAZ. In 1969, the 75-ton quarry BelAZ-549 appeared, and in 1978, model 7419, capable of transporting up to 110 tons of cargo. Next, the plant produced BelAZ-75211 with a carrying capacity of 170 tons.
The BelAZ-7540 model has been produced by the plant since 1992. The dump truck is considered one of the best in the world. The car is the smallest among production cars, but its characteristics are not comparable to the features and capabilities of other trucks from global manufacturers. This dump truck was designed to transport rocks from the mining point to storage or processing points.

On modifications BelAZ 7540A, BelAZ 7540B, BelAZ 7540D and BelAZ 7540K, a standard body with a capacity of 15.1 cubic meters is installed when loaded to the edge of the sides (19.2 cubic meters when filled with a cap). For the BelAZ 7540E version, a coal-carrying body with a capacity of 24.7 cubic meters is provided when filled flush with the sides (28.2 cubic meters when loaded with a cap). The maximum lift angle of the platform is 53 degrees.
The maximum speed of the equipment is 50 km/h, the maximum climbability is 10%. Braking distance at a speed of 40 km/h is 22 m.
Vehicle Features
The conditions in which such transport is operated are by no means easy. Even if you do not take into account small distances (from 1 to 5 km), these vehicles have to move through difficult areas. The roads have a variable profile and a large number of turns. Often temporary roads are created in quarries, the surface of which is unsatisfactory. In addition, the roads consist of alternating ascents and descents of varying lengths. Therefore, a mining dump truck must have serious technical characteristics.
It should be noted that BelAZ-7540 is a whole family of models. As for the operating parameters, they are the same in all modifications. The only difference between them is the engines. These cars are also equipped with a torque converter gearbox, two types of brakes, a comfortable cabin with climate control and other functions.
Engine
For the BelAZ 7540 family, there are several power plant options:
- YaMZ-240PM2 (BelAZ 7540A);
- YaMZ-240M2-1 (BelAZ 7540B/BelAZ 7540E);
- DEUTZ BF 8M 1015 (BelAZ 7540D);
- Cummins QSM11-C (BelAZ 7540K).
The YaMZ-240PM2 V-shaped diesel engine is considered the base engine of the family. The 12-cylinder engine with direct injection, turbocharging and liquid cooling demonstrates good performance in all conditions.

- cylinder diameter – 130 mm.
The YaMZ-240M2-1 is structurally similar to the YaMZ-240PM2 engine, but differs from it in the absence of turbocharging and lower performance.

The foreign engine DEUTZ BF 8M 1015 is a 4-stroke eight with twin turbocharging, water cooling and direct injection. The unit provides increased traction performance.
Characteristics of the DEUTZ BF 8M 1015 engine:
- working volume – 15.87 l;
- rated power – 290 (395) hp.
The Cummins QSM11-C features an inline 6-cylinder design, intelligent direct injection and wet sump. The unit is installed in more expensive versions of the BelAZ 7540.
Characteristics of the Cummins QSM11-C engine:

- rated power – 298 (400) kW (hp);
- maximum torque – 1898 Nm.
The car shows high efficiency. For versions BelAZ 7540A, BelAZ 7540B, BelAZ 7540E, the average consumption is 55.3 l/hour, for the BelAZ 7540D model - 60.89 l/hour, for the BelAZ 7540K modification - 59.77 l/hour.
All variations of the family are equipped with the same fuel tank with a capacity of 420 liters.

Device
The design of the BelAZ 7540 differs little from other models of the Belarusian Automobile Plant. It is based on a welded frame with longitudinal spars having a box-shaped section and connected by cross members. The front and rear suspensions of the car are pneumatic-hydraulic dependent. Each axle uses 2 integrated hydraulic shock absorbers.
Depending on the modification, the BelAZ 7540 can be equipped with various transmissions:
- Most models use a 5-speed hydromechanical transmission with a 3-shaft matching gearbox and a single-stage torque converter (5 forward and 2 reverse speeds). The transmission has an electrohydraulic control drive and a hydrodynamic retarder.
- On the BelAZ 7540V and BelAZ 7540E versions, a 3-speed hydromechanical transmission is installed.
The cardan transmission is represented by 2 cardan shafts that provide connection between the transmission and the unit and the drive axle. The drive axle is of a mechanical differential type and is complemented by a single-stage final drive with a gear ratio of 3.167.
The brake system is divided into:
- working subsystem (drum mechanisms);
- parking subsystem (block mechanism on the drive shaft of the main gear);
- auxiliary subsystem (hydrodynamic brake-retarder as part of the transmission);
- spare subsystem (action through the operating circuit of the main system and the parking brake).
The appearance of the BelAZ 7540 is as practical as possible. The entire front area is occupied by a slightly protruding hood. Under it there is a powerful bumper with optics, on the sides there are stairs through which you can get to the upper part of the car. The cabin is located closer to the left side and is equipped with one door. The car's interior is just as practical: ergonomically located controls, the most informative dashboard and a spacious interior. For ease of operation, a sprung driver's seat with settings is installed. There is also a side passenger seat.
The BelAZ 7540 is equipped with a welded metal body (for the BelAZ 7540E version, a special coal platform with a larger volume is offered). The body is equipped with FOPS safety elements, a locking device, a protruding visor to prevent rock debris from entering the cabin, and a heated bottom. The body is lifted using telescopic hydraulic cylinders with 3 stages. The hydraulic cylinders are controlled using hydraulics with gear pumps.
Basic equipment of the BelAZ 7540 includes:
- fire extinguishing system;
- adjustable steering column;
- centralized lubrication system;
- preheater;
- alarm system notifying about the proximity of high-voltage lines;
- cabin heater;
- stone breakers and stone pushers.
Electrically heated mirrors, air conditioning and a second heater are optionally installed.
Prices and analogues
The selling price of trucks is 4.4-5.6 million rubles (depending on the engine model). The price of used cars equipped with a 361-horsepower diesel engine starts from 1 million rubles. Dump trucks with more powerful units are valued at 3-3.2 million rubles and more. The rental price is hourly, starting from 2 thousand rubles. A direct analogue of the Belarusian vehicle is the Komatsu HD325-6 mining dump truck, designed to transport 32 tons of cargo.

Equipment - to order
Each dump truck is unique. BELAZ does not have the concept of “basic equipment”, just as there is no “warehouse stock” - each unit is made for a specific customer. Therefore, for example, the “Australian” examples are not the usual yellow and blue, but white - with a mirror “to fix your makeup” in the cabin and an angle of inclination of the stairs that is atypical for a quarry worker.
“We paint cars intended for use in Australia white to reduce the impact of solar radiation on the driver. What’s interesting is that women often work there as BELAZ drivers, and they need a more comfortable ladder and a mirror in the cab. These are all the wishes of the customer,” explains Stanislav Yakubovich .
