How to make a trailer with your own hands according to prepared drawings


Russian craftsmen often make a trailer for a UAZ with their own hands, not taking into account the fact that it is a vehicle and for this reason its registration is mandatory. A homemade product cannot initially have a passport, so before registering your design with the traffic police, you will have to obtain a safety certificate issued by a special testing laboratory. Thus, your cart must meet absolutely all the requirements described in the technical regulations.

It seems possible to use an unregistered homemade trailer only in the outback, where road guards are not too principled, but in large cities you will be fined, and if you are detained again, the trailer will simply be confiscated.

General provisions

Unfortunately, since 2011 in our country it has been impossible to register a trailer made using a “handicraft” method. Until this time, homemade trailers were subject to requirements, subject to which this procedure would have been successful:

  • The length is no more than 12 m, the height is less than 4 m, and the width should not exceed 2.55 m. Of course, such dimensions are not required for a trailer, so there will be no problems with them.
  • The maximum weight of the trailer must not exceed the weight of the vehicle.
  • For trailers weighing more than 750 kg, a braking system, permanent or inertial, is provided.

But, alas, all this is in the past and now all that remains is to be content with your achievements without registration.

At the moment, the fine for using an unregistered trailer is 300 rubles. Repeated offenses will result in the trailer being seized.

A trailer for a walk-behind tractor is useful on the farm, so it must be durable. The main load falls on the frame, which is the basis of the structure. The towbar also receives enormous loads. Materials

It’s worth saying right away that a trailer for a UAZ must withstand enormous loads, since the owner, sooner or later, will want to transport a load weighing more than 750 kg. Then even a corner with a 40 mm shelf will be too small. So, what will you need to make a trailer:

  • Hubs, preferably from the UAZ vehicle itself, since in this case the spare wheel will be used for both the trailer and the SUV itself
  • A pipe with a wall of at least 5 mm and a length of at least 2 m. It will be used as a drawbar
  • A piece of pipe, about 20 cm long, for making a foot-stand
  • Beam to which hubs can be attached. It must be either from a channel or from a thick-walled pipe
  • Springs with travel limiters
  • Sheet iron about 1 mm thick. Bigger doesn't mean better, it's just an unjustified weighting of the structure
  • Espagnols with locking if you plan to make an opening side. It is important that they cannot open themselves
  • Rectangular profile pipe, the total length required is about 30 m.
  • In addition, you may need custom parts that will be necessary to complete the project. Some of them may have to be made to order.

You can use a bridge as a beam: then you won’t have to come up with fastenings for springs, shock absorbers and hubs. In this case, the trailer will be quite high, and it is also necessary to take care of the gearbox.

These are just ideal materials, with which there will be no problems; you can also use similar ones, for example, those described in the article below.

Repair and service

Despite the fact that the design of the trailer does not include complex mechanisms, it will still require some maintenance. Try to prevent moisture from entering the body to avoid rust. Particular care should be taken to protect the wiring, which may lose contact with the lighting fixtures, from water, so that the bulbs do not have to be replaced prematurely.

The optimal place to park a trailer is, of course, a garage. If the product is forced to remain outdoors for a long time, do not remove the awning from it or cover it with some kind of film. Due to the heavy weight of the trailer, it is wise to carry wheel chocks along with it. This precaution will help avoid possible accidents.

If the care of the trailer was inappropriate and the trailer was severely damaged by corrosion, you will have to do a major overhaul, which consists of replacing rotten parts and reinforcing the frame with corners.

If the trailer is overloaded, the spring suspension may fail, so try to calculate the weight of the materials being transported in advance. Also, when the trailer is idle for long periods, the shock absorbers usually stop functioning, in which case they are simply replaced with new ones. To store tires, place a stand under the support beam.

Manufacturing process

  • Regardless of the size of the trailer, the bottom frame must be welded first. Exactly the perimeter. Particular attention must be paid to compliance with the plane. Naturally, it needs to be made in the form of a lattice. Transverse and longitudinal partitions can be made from smaller profiled pipes.

  • Then you can start installing the sides: they can be made completely removable, either on awnings, or only the rear side can be left open. It is also worth considering the possibility of their extension and the possibility of installing an awning.
  • Now you need to secure the beam to the body. This must be done on shock absorbers, springs or leaf springs. When carrying out this stage of work, it is necessary to calculate the possible load, and then install everything. In this case, an example is given when two shock absorbers from a Ural motorcycle are installed on one side. As practice shows, their use is possible with a loaded trailer weight of no more than 750 kg. If you plan to transport heavier loads, you need to find an alternative.

  • Particular attention must be paid to installing the drawbar in place. It is better to attach it directly to the beam, since this design is the most durable. If desired, you can make it adjustable in length (inner and outer pipes). As mentioned at the beginning of the article, the drawbar must be made of a pipe with a thick wall.

Thus, we get an almost ready-made trailer for the UAZ with our own hands. However, you should not hope that the Internet is full of drawings: most likely, you will have to draw them yourself. From many articles you can only glean general information.

Do-it-yourself low beam headlight adjustment

The shock absorbers here are of a double-acting type, telescopic and hydraulic. They were unified with the shock absorbers of the 3151 car from UAZ. You do not need to make any specific settings and adjustments.

The wheels are stamped and made of steel. The rim is deep and one-piece. Their dimensions are 6Jx15. And the tires are six-ply tube type, size 215/90 and R15. The manufacturer tried to unify the trailer hubs with UAZ 3151 car hubs. Although some people like to deal with wheels of a larger radius. It's a personal choice for everyone.

When adjusting the torque of the hub bearings, be sure to carefully control it. It would be a good idea to take a suitcase with tools and get a torque wrench. If you do not tighten it properly, the trailer will be subject to constant impacts during operation, which will cause the bearings to fail in a short time. If you tighten it too tightly, then the bearings will begin to heat up excessively, all the lubricant will leak out and the bearing will become unusable.

Completing what you started

A trailer requires all the same “accessories” as a vehicle. The first thing you should pay attention to are the fenders and mudguards. They are needed not only for beauty, but, first of all, for safety, because dirt from under the wheels can simply throw the glass behind a moving car. They can be purchased ready-made or made yourself. If the entire trailer is made well and is intended to transport loads of more than a ton, then it would be better to make wings on which you can put something, lean on them, or simply step on them so that this action does not cause them harm.

Next you need to install lighting equipment. At this point, too, you should not save, you need to equip:

  • Wires of the required length and thickness
  • High-quality socket for connection to the vehicle's on-board system
  • Corrugation in order to protect the wire, because it will have to be passed under the body
  • As an option (but not mandatory), you can install an additional fuse box for the trailer in the trunk
  • The lanterns themselves

It is necessary to make brackets for the latter, and it is better to cover them with a lattice to avoid damage. You also need to choose the right place: it is best to place them on the sides of the sides, otherwise they can be damaged during unloading.

Next, let's look at the awning. This is also an important part, as it will help prevent the load from falling out while moving, and will also save you from unwanted eyes. To do this, it is worth welding brackets to the sides into which the frames will be inserted. Their height can also be adjusted.

Well, almost everything, all that remains is to secure the spare wheel. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to make a trailer on UAZ wheels, so the “spare wheel” will have to be duplicated. It can be installed on the front side, drawbar or under the bottom of the trailer.

Requirements for trailers for UAZ vehicles

Towable devices for UAZ vehicles must easily move along roads and overcome difficult to pass places, while transporting considerable loads. That is why the UAZ 8109 trailer is equipped for off-road travel with large diameter wheels and high ground clearance. The design features of the unit's wings prevent the adhesion and subsequent drying of dirt or other parts of the unpaved road surface on the wheels. And two hooks welded to the back of the frame allow you to remove the device in emergency situations.
