GAZ 2217 Barguzin technical characteristics

The Gorky Automobile Plant launched the Sobol family of cars into production at the end of 1998. Before this, there were practically no cars of this class in Russia, and the brand was beyond competition (not counting foreign analogues). Unlike the Gazelle, the Sobol has a shortened base and, accordingly, a lower carrying capacity (on average about 0.9 tons).

In total, GAZ has developed four main modifications of small-tonnage followers of the Gazelle:

  • GAZ 2752 (3 or 7-seater all-metal van);
  • GAZ 22171 (10-seater minibus);
  • GAZ 2217 (6-seater minivan);
  • GAZ 2310 (truck with flatbed body).

The Sobol brand GAZ 2752 with double-leaf rear doors and a sliding door on the side of the body (on the right) was adopted as the basis.

The Sobol Barguzin minivan (or minibus), depending on the configuration, can be 6-seater or 10-seater. At first, models with a “high” roof rolled off the assembly line of the car plant; starting from 1999, the roof height was reduced by 10 cm. In the new modification, the rear door began to open from the bottom up, like on a hatchback passenger car. From that time on, the Barguzin began to be considered a minivan.

Modifications of GAZ 2217

There have been quite a lot of modifications of the Barguzin throughout its production. It should be noted that the minivan has undergone deep restyling twice. The first generation of 2217 cars was produced from 1998 to 2003. Then the second series of “Sable” began, which was produced until 2010. Unlike the previous model, it has the following changes:

  • Rectangular headlights were replaced with teardrop-shaped headlights;
  • The shape of the hood has changed;
  • An improved instrument panel appeared in the cabin;
  • The range of engines installed on the vehicle has significantly expanded.

The next time restyling took place in 2010, when the entire Gazelle family received improved equipment and became known as Gazelle Business. The level of comfort has also increased for the GAZ 2217 brand; the car acquired the name “Barguzin Business”.

This time the car received:

  • Updated front bumper, which is now attached to the cab rather than to the frame;
  • Eight available body colors;
  • German instrument panel;
  • Improved interior lighting;
  • Improved stove heating;
  • Adjustable steering column;
  • Imported clutch from ZF Sachs.

The main differences between Barguzin and Gazelle

It is believed that the Sobol is a more compact version of the Gazelle, and this is true. Although the Sobol is a car of a completely different class, the models have a lot in common - the same components and assemblies, appearance, interior and exterior elements. When comparing models, it is better to consider the main differences. And the main differences between Sobol are as follows:

  • One wheel is installed on the rear axle (the Gazelle has a gable tire);
  • Load capacity is approximately one and a half times less;
  • The wheelbase is 140 mm shorter;
  • Unlike springs, the Gazelle is equipped with a front spring suspension (4x2 version);
  • More compact luxury interior;

  • Other brake drums;
  • The diameter of the brake discs has been increased by 15 mm;
  • Other springs are installed on the rear suspension.

The big advantage of the front suspension on the Barguzin is that it does not have kingpins. Ball joints are installed instead.

Models 2003-2010.

In 2003, Sobol Barguzin underwent major modernization. In addition to modified headlights and hood, interior improvements, the range of engines installed on the car has changed. The line added a turbocharged GAZ-5601 (95 hp) and an injection ZMZ 405.

After 2008, the GAZ 2217 model was supplemented with 2.4-liter Chrysler engines and the improved GAZ 5602; since 2009, the Ulyanovsk Motor Plant’s internal combustion engine (2.9 l) entered the series.

The side rear view mirrors have also changed - they have become more voluminous.

Test drive GAZ 22177 (Sable 4x4)

On an expedition to the Kola Peninsula in October 2015, we were lucky twice. Firstly, we reached the northernmost point of mainland Russia on the Rybachy Peninsula. Secondly, we had something to get there. When we were looking for a car for a road trip to the north of Russia, we turned to one of the GAZ dealers. Subsequently, he directly connected us with representatives of the plant. Surprisingly, we easily received support for our project and travel idea. To do this, they gave us a brand new GAZ 22177 (Sable 4x4) 2014 with some 27,000 km on the speedometer. And for all 14 days we practically did not let go of the steering wheel. More than 5,000 km of roads have been covered, of which about 300 km are on dirt roads and 200 km off-road on the Sredny and Rybachy peninsulas. We will write about the journey itself, but now I would like to talk about the car itself.

Route map: So, we have a 7-seater (6+1) minibus GAZ-22177 with a modernized all-wheel drive transmission, all-wheel drive, Eaton rear axle differential lock and a powerful Cummins ISF 2.8 diesel engine. Now I will briefly talk about my impressions of the car, without going into details, since I am judging it solely as an amateur driver, and not a professional.

We didn’t just travel as tourists with a minimum of things, but, on the contrary, we took a lot of them. Half of them were taken up by filming equipment, so a lot of space was needed. Almost everything fit in the cabin, and every item eventually found its place. Very high seating position. It’s very satisfying when, while driving, you also examine the surrounding reality for a good shot!

The car is not fast or dynamic on the roads. The limit we stopped at was 130 km/h. But already at a speed of 80-100 km, noise is felt, and in order to hear the interlocutor you have to strain your vocal cords. Sound insulation is not very good. These sensations accompanied us for the first hundreds of kilometers when starting from Nizhny Novgorod. Already in Karelia we paid little attention to this. There are 2 cigarette lighters installed in the cabin. We used a splitter, and therefore the GPS navigator, video recorder, and radar detector were constantly on. Smartphones have never been left without power. The seat belts are hard and not very comfortable.

I was very pleased with the rear view mirrors. They are adjustable from the interior and provide a good overview. Convenient gearbox, speeds change easily and freely. Even after using an automatic transmission in my personal car for a long time, I instantly remembered my mechanical skills. The car is not fast - that's true. But the truth is that she is very strong. Handles the road very well. We were convinced of this when we passed a snowy pass on the Sredny Peninsula, using a low gear. When we climbed the mountains in the Khibiny, the road was wet from rain and snow. But the car pulled up confidently, and then also confidently went down. When we tried to drive along the sandy spit of the Barents Sea, we began to sink into the sand under the weight of the car, but thanks to all-wheel drive and lowering, we got out of it with the same ease. Fords with large stones were also no big deal. The brakes are soft, the car does not stand rooted to the spot when you press the brake pedal, so it is better to brake in advance (and even better not to create situations where you need to urgently brake with your foot to the floor!). But the gas pedal is very flexible and well controlled. The truth, it seemed, was too small. On the off-road, when the car was thrown from side to side, the leg often lost it.

Of course, we did not have killer tests and did not have the task of killing the suspension and engine. But even if we wanted to do this, we would have to make a lot of effort. Sobol has too much safety margin. Snow in Murmansk and Nizhny Novgorod came as a surprise to many, so there were many accidents. We helped such poor souls using the rope and the strength of our “sable”. Cars were easy for him. Summing up the operation of the car not during a test drive around a dealer's car shop, but on a long journey, I can say with confidence that the Sobol is becoming an ideal purchase in terms of price-quality ratio. An excellent car for a group of hunters, fishermen, tourists, and small expeditions. If the car is properly prepared for off-road conditions, it can be used to drive into impassable thickets, where there is still fish and game. And there are no people.

We did not use the trunk with a ladder for its intended purpose, since all the luggage fit inside the cabin. But we often used it as a high point for shooting!


This is what many romantics go to the Kola Peninsula for. Not everyone ultimately sees this. And not everyone gets there. But we were lucky. The car did not disappoint, and the weather was favorable. "Barguzin business"

“Sobol Barguzin”, unlike “Gazelle”, is more suitable for business trips or as a family car. To a large extent, comfort depends on the thoughtful interior decoration. All the details of the interior of the car in the next generation Soboley model - GAZ 2217 Barguzin Business - have been well worked out.

On the roads, the new model is easily recognizable by its modified front bumper and radiator grille trim. The instrument panel, audio system, air conditioning and heating systems have changed in the cabin. The stove is now controlled using an electronic unit.

The steering wheel has acquired different shapes and has become more pleasant to the touch. Installed different turn switches and windshield wipers. The new brand began to use an imported clutch - due to this, speeds are now switched more easily, and the clutch pedal is pressed noticeably softer. The plant gives a guarantee of 80 thousand km or two years for the new Sobol Barguzin, the interval between maintenance has increased to 15 thousand km.

The new model is also equipped with two types of engines – a 2.9-liter UMZ-4216 gasoline engine and a promising Cummins turbocharged diesel engine (2.8-liter).

The diesel engine in the Gazelle is very reliable and has a service life of about 500 thousand km before major repairs. The diesel engine at Barguzin Business has the following refueling tanks:

  • Engine oil in the crankcase – 5 l;
  • Oil in the oil filter – 0.44 l;
  • Liquid in the cooling system – 6 l;
  • Between the max and min marks on the dipstick – 1 liter.

Description

The interior of this car can very easily be changed into a minibus, a cargo-passenger combi or a load-lifting van, due to the fact that the sofas can be folded and moved along the guides. This car has a series of minibuses (a kind of passenger version) that can accommodate 8 passengers in the cabin. In the cabin, passengers can accommodate 6 people on beautiful and comfortable sofas, which is very comfortable and convenient for them, as they can carry on conversations and conversations during the trip. There is a folding table at which it is convenient to work or dine, there are also sleeping places for 2-4 people, and at the same time there is a large space in the luggage compartment in order to place a lot of things. All this will help you make your trip or journey more comfortable.

The Combi car has the ability to transport both passengers and cargo. At the same time, it seats 5 people and allows you to transport cargo weighing up to 305 kg. It is also possible to create 2 sleeping places, and there is a folding table.

Chassis, transmission, steering and braking system

As for the Barguzin chassis, it has the following technical characteristics:

  • Gearbox – mechanical, five-speed, all gears are synchronized (except reverse speed);
  • Transfer case (for models with all-wheel drive) – two gears, with gear ratios 1.07 and 1.86;
  • Clutch – with one driven disc, hydraulic drive;
  • The front suspension for models with rear-wheel drive is independent, double wishbone, for models with all-wheel drive – dependent, on leaf springs. All types of suspension are equipped with a stabilizer and hydraulic shock absorbers;
  • The brake system is hydraulically driven, with two separate circuits for the front and rear wheels, with a pressure regulator and a vacuum booster.


    There are discs on the front axle and drums on the rear axle. Hand brake on cables, cables go to the rear wheels;

  • Steering – worm shaft – ball nut type mechanism, gear ratio 16.6; with hydraulic power steering, the column is adjustable in angle and height;
  • Rear suspension - leaf spring, with stabilizer and hydraulic shock absorbers;
  • The main gear (rear axle) is hypoid type, gear ratio 4.556 for the 4x2 model, gear ratio 5.125 for the 4x4 model.

Differences in the data of GAZ 2217 and GAZ 22177

Cars with all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive have differences not only in design, but also in performance characteristics. For example, the total weight of the all-wheel drive GAZ 22177 model is 200 kg more, and it is equal to 3000 kg. The Barguzin 4x4 accelerates more slowly and has a lower maximum speed (110 km/h compared to 120 km/h for the 2217 model). There are other differences, they are combined in a table.

But the GAZ 22177 has good cross-country ability and is ideal for country trips into nature. For mushroom pickers and hunters, the all-wheel drive Sobol Barguzin 4x4 will be an indispensable assistant and will be able to overcome off-road conditions. Of course, this is not a UAZ or a GAZ 66, however, the all-wheel drive 22177 behaves confidently on dirt roads.
