In this case, the wheel size. Does the NEXT City LAWN differ from a regular LAWN only in the size of the wheels? Yes and no - everything is a little more interesting here. And there is no point in theorizing, it is better to try it yourself. It is quite difficult to assess the changes by eye, the same familiar LAWN NEXT. And in order to evaluate from ten meters the replacement of 20-inch wheels (8.25R20) with 19-inch (245/70R19.5) wheels, you need to have a good eye.

Given the external dimensions (length – 7 m, base – 4.5 m), it is almost impossible to notice the difference in height with a standard LAWN of 6.5 cm. It’s best to look under the rear axle housing, here you can clearly see that the car sits lower (ground clearance instead of 253 mm, for the LAWN City it is 189 mm), frankly speaking, for our conditions the decision is controversial. However, if you take into account the habitat of a delivery truck, it is quite tolerable.

Another interesting thing is that despite the fact that the overall height of the machine decreased by 65 mm, the loading height was reduced by 135 mm. This is a good help for loaders, especially in those companies where forklifts have not yet taken root and they have to drag the cargo into the body along the guides manually. That's all the external differences.

The engine here is the same - a YaMZ-534 turbodiesel four producing 149 hp at 2300 rpm. and 490 Nm at 1200-2100 rpm. The same five-speed gearbox... But the main gear is different. The standard 4.556 ratio main pair has been replaced with 3.9! But this, combined with a reduced wheel radius, promises significant fuel savings.

Why install smaller wheels? No, with fuel economy everything is more or less clear, but that’s not all. Manufacturers consider the main trump card of the new wheels to be that they are easier to balance, but the fact that less unsprung weight reduces the load on the transmission is understandable. But didn’t all these tricks come to the detriment of speed and traction characteristics?

We climb into the cabin. Here, too, everything is familiar, anyone who has ever driven a LAWN/GAZelle/Ural NEXT will feel at home, everything is the same and everything is in its place. The chair with six adjustments, including lumbar support, compares favorably with the GAZelle. It is clear that a more massive gear lever is in its place. Otherwise, no surprises.

What pleases me most is the dashboard with a speedometer marked up to 200 km/h and a tachometer that optimistically promises as much as 6000 rpm... I understand - unification, identical instruments across the entire family is cheaper than drawing a new scale each time and calibrating instruments to it ... But, if you can still agree with the tachometer, considering that the EvoTech gasoline engine on the GAZelle can be spun up to 5.5 thousand rpm, then the speedometer is from the realm of fantasy, the fastest car of the entire model range is the GAZelle NEXT faster than 130 km/h is not capable of driving, in principle. Then why?

Turn the key and the engine starts, and suddenly surprise - it sounds much quieter than you would expect from a diesel. It is clear that the engine is innovative (in general, one of the best not only in Russia, but also among world analogues), but do not forget that 150 hp. are removed from the 4.43 liter displacement and the engine has to operate in rather harsh conditions.

We set off and begin to taxi out of the parking lot in front of the administrative building of the plant; there are quite a lot of cars here and they are parked tightly together. The seven-meter truck demonstrates good maneuverability, the turning radius is 9.8 m. A very worthy result. Yes, I completely forgot, a few words about the box. The gearbox is five-speed with reinforced synchronizers in 2-3-4-5 gears; you can forget about double clutch release and throttle shifting, which are familiar to drivers of Gorky medium-duty trucks. It is clear that an empty car starts easily from second gear.

Second, third, fourth and everything in the city in fourth gear you can drive like an automatic machine; the wide range of torque allows you to accelerate from 30 km/h to “city” 60 km/h. The acceleration is more than confident, and we were convinced of this right outside the factory gates, but then...

The movie starts in the city... We start at a traffic light, second gear, third... and the tinted junk "ten" looks at our tailgate. The brave horseman barks a bucket of collective farm muffler and tries to overtake us before the next traffic light to look at the one who bypassed his tuned vehicle in a truck! Naturally, it cuts you off and “puts your butt up,” but on the City LAWN the brakes are fine; here you rather have to look in the large mirrors so that someone doesn’t come from behind. The “ten” of the proud horseman, who showed us who is boss in the city, roars off from the traffic light and disappears in a cloud of its own smoke - the muffler has completely leaked. And I have to close the window and turn on the air conditioner. The window closes with the press of a button, and the air conditioner does its job normally.

And then the unreality of what is happening hits me: I’m driving on a LAWN, with electric windows, air conditioning and radio controls on the steering wheel... No, does this happen? Is it true? At one time I had a personal GAZ-52, and it was not so long ago, 20 years ago I could not even imagine that such luxury would be available to an ordinary truck driver with a Deer on the hood.

Well, to be a little more serious, in terms of comfort and ergonomics, LAWN NEXT is significantly ahead of its competitors from the Asia-Pacific region, Japanese and Korean medium-duty trucks are much noisier, and sitting on a wheel (which is what Asian designers offer) is not as comfortable as sitting behind it.

We taxi out onto the highway. Well, here we immediately turn on fifth, it operates in the range of 50-110 km/h, and “at maximum speed” we easily bypass our neighbors in the stream, approving faces and raised fingers flash in the side windows. The empty car travels rather harshly, shaking at the junctions of the road surface. This is understandable - the load capacity is five tons.

Most problems begin with the phrase: “Let’s do it beautifully”! In search of a spectacular angle, we drive onto a country road and on a forest path we get stuck in the sand. The heavy muzzle plods, and the light rear and double tire tires skid helplessly. Well... have you arrived? It's a long walk to get the tractor. Not immediately, but after the second or third time, having turned on the lock and smoothly working with the gas, in third gear, we finally left. This means that if you act wisely, then on the NEXT City LAWN you can drive off the asphalt.

As you already understood, for the test we got a car with a two-row cabin - a private owner’s dream. If you can give six people a lift to the facility, you can also get a decent night’s sleep on a long journey. The backs of the second row of seats fold down and you get a quite decent bed, although not wide - you can’t walk around together, but one can sleep in comfort, the internal width of the cabin allows a person of any height to lie down.

On the way back, I thought that if we really supported small businesses, then GAZ would be inundated with orders from private owners for the NEXT City LAWN. Moreover, the price for it starts from 1,470 thousand rubles, and for the long-wheelbase version with a double cabin they ask from 1,535 thousand rubles. Competitors smoke nervously, any Asian mid-sized truck is one and a half times more expensive, and I’m not talking about Europeans.
