Is six years a long time or a short one for a new MAZ? We met with the driver Alexander, who drives a 2011 MAZ-5440E9 with a Euro-5 engine. The car has already driven 460,000 km - what faults have been identified?

— In 2011, our company needed a new tractor. At first we thought of buying a new DAF in Europe, but with customs clearance it would have cost 90,000 euros. We bought this MAZ for 50,000, almost half the price. Naturally, having saved, something had to be sacrificed.
Maintenance during the warranty period
After purchasing a car and registering it with the traffic police, the owner enters into a maintenance agreement with the service station for the duration of the warranty period. If there are no specialized stations in the region where the vehicle is used, the buyer informs the MAZ service and sales department about licensed transport organizations performing repairs. The management of the manufacturer gives written permission to enter into an agreement with this company, and all completed maintenance procedures are recorded in the service book. If such marks are not put, then the company does not bear responsibility.
Design and modifications
The appearance of the Belarusian truck tractor corresponds to modern automotive fashion: stylish aerodynamic body kits and linings, a wing on the roof, new modern head optics, a modernized radiator grille, and an eye-pleasing color scheme. However, the truck retained its recognizable features.
Separately, it is worth highlighting the MAZ-5440M9 modification. The modification has been produced since 2022, and has a fundamentally new cabin design - in the front part there is head optics in the form of lensed lights. In the center there is a massive black radiator grille with a silver MAZ inscription, and under it there is a logo with the image of a bison - a new recognizable sign of the Minsk Automobile Plant. A little lower, under the air intake grille, there is a step, thanks to which the driver can easily care for the massive windshield.
Attention! The rebuilt truck, and numerous modifications of the truck, boast a huge windshield for an ideal view of the road surface. For the convenience of drivers, large adjustable rear-view mirrors and external sun visors located above the windshield are provided.
System diagnostics
There are three main types of diagnostics: simplified (using control indicators), complete (using diagnostic equipment indicators), and using flashing light codes. Simplified diagnostics show operation every time the power is turned on and while the motor is running. At the same time, it constantly monitors the serviceability of individual elements of the sensor system, control units and other components in the MAZ-5440. Reviews from owners of the ICE 7511 indicate that the system transmits a warning or stops the engine in case of critical errors.
If the indicator lights up while driving, it means that you should immediately, without creating a threat of an emergency, stop the car and turn off the engine. Further movement of the vehicle is permitted only by towing.
Car cabin
It is located above the engine, made of solid metal, the structure is welded in some places, has two places, and tilts forward if necessary.
If it is necessary to transport a third person, then the middle seat on the sleeping berth of the MAZ-5440 car is used. Owner reviews speak of a convenient lifting panel that provides access to vehicle components located behind the front panel. When it is raised, it rests securely on air springs, and when it is lowered, it is secured with locks.
The space under the sleeping bag is used during a trip to place small necessary items; a heating fireplace or a small refrigerator is installed there. The side wardrobes for clothes are very conveniently located, as the owners' reviews say. MAZ-5440 with a Renault engine has an upper sleeping bag, which is located at a comfortable angle while driving.
Device
The MAZ-6430 is equipped with a modernized air suspension with an automatic control valve, which allows the semi-trailer to be automatically transferred to the transport position after loading and unloading operations. The driver's participation in this process is not required.
Another distinctive feature of the truck was the modified appearance and cabin with new headlights, a 460 mm steering wheel, an upper shelf located under the windshield, improved cladding, an instrument panel, a composite bumper and an interesting instrument panel.
The main goal of refining the MAZ-6430 cabin was to solve a number of technological and operational issues: organizing air flow to reduce pollution and improving aerodynamics. The use of splash guards helped to minimize disruption to other road users in rainy weather.
The drive axles of the MAZ-6430 have a pneumatic 4-bar suspension. Electronic systems and electrical equipment on the tractor have been significantly improved. The main innovation was the appearance of the advanced switching equipment unit "BKA-4" with electrical connectors "Power Timer" and "knife" type fuses. This increased the reliability of the car.
The headlight unit is made in one housing and includes low and high beam elements, a front turn signal, dimensions and a built-in low beam angle corrector. The headlamp is distinguished by increased protection from impacts and a modern design.
The instrument panel has an extensive information area that displays the status of the vehicle's components and systems. It includes a multifunctional monitor that displays data in digital form.
The MAZ-6430 air suspension is equipped with an ECAS control system with a modern set of systems: diagnostic and control functions, load on the drive axles and fuel consumption control. The tractor is also equipped with an advanced anti-lock and traction control system. The latter functions very effectively.
A Stoneridge tachograph, belonging to category MTSO 1324, appeared on the top shelf of the cabin. It is electrically connected to the instrument panel. The cabin also contains a voltage converter, a special socket for charging a phone or connecting a TV, and power windows.
Getting into the MAZ-6430 cabin has become more convenient due to the large doorway and the successful design of handrails and steps. It is already quite difficult to distinguish the cabin of the latest modifications of the model from foreign analogues. It uses modern materials, and the instrument cluster is clearly visible at any time. There is also a small fold-out table on the center console.
Already in the basic version, the MAZ-6430 is equipped with a sprung driver's seat, a spoiler, a tachograph, a speed limiter, seat belts, an engine heater and ABS. An independent air heater installed in the cab and an electronic traction control system (ASR) are optionally available for the tractor.
Cabin interior
The cabin interior is fully equipped for the driver. There are no these awkward angularities. Older models don't compare to the cabin featured in this model. The driver will be comfortable in the car even on long trips.
The seat is spacious and comfortable, there are supports on its sides, even on a pillow.
The driver of the car, having secured himself in a seat with an armrest, can adjust it to his physical parameters.
The MAZ-6430 chair is equipped with the following:
- backrest tilt level;
- chair height;
- seat reach;
- slopes and height of the pillow;
- retractable armrest.
The steering wheel has an adjustable column that can be changed:
- by height;
- by slope;
- upon departure.
This allows you to maneuver and control the tractor comfortably. The steering wheel diameter is optimal - 46 centimeters. Behind the steering wheel is the instrument panel. It is well lit in the dark and does not interfere with anything at all.
There are also switches and buttons. They are located to the right of the driver. Access to it is convenient and open.
This is a modern car. One of the proofs of its modernity is the small size of the liquid crystal screen. It allows you to instantly access the functioning systems of the tractor.
MAZ-6430 is designed for long trips. That is why it is equipped with a folding table, which is located in the center of the instrument panel. Another plus is a refrigerator, a gas stove with a cylinder for 8 liters of blue fuel.
The sleeping accommodations are also comfortable. They are better equipped than previous models. You can relax even while driving, which will not affect comfort in any way.
The passenger seat is also thought out to the smallest detail. It is the same as the driver's. If you wish, you can stand up to your full height and have a good stretch.
Sound insulation is another strong point. But this cannot be said about previous models. The models of the Belarusian plant had one problem, which they managed to get rid of.
Service
Daily maintenance includes:
- Checking the level of working fluid in the tank.
- Checking the oil and coolant levels.
- Diagnostics of the power unit for damage and defects.
- Checking the pressure level of oil fluid and air in the pneumatic system.
Motor Maintenance:
- Conduct an external inspection of the entire mechanism.
- Identify damaged and worn parts that need to be replaced with new ones.
- Check the tightness of the mounting nuts and bolts that connect the engine mounts to the inside of the vehicle body.
- Inspect the muffler, bracket with frame, exhaust pipe ladders with transverse frame.
- Check the condition and tightness of the connection between the hose and the muffler body.
What kind of oil to fill
Recommended brands: TNK, Sibneft, MX Extra, Lukoil - Avangard. The oil volume should not exceed 8-10 liters, depending on the engine modification.
Specifications
In addition to an extensive exterior restyling, the 6430 model received modern power units and other related mechanics. The main focus, as always, was maximum productivity. To do this, the developers of the Yaroslavl Machine-Building Plant improved the existing motors for this model. This representative of MAZ tractors has several modifications. This unit is obviously weaker in power, but has greater efficiency. In addition, all engines for MAZ-6430 trucks have the Euro-3 environmental class. The tables showed the performance characteristics of the basic models. At different times and different versions were equipped with imported engines, such as Renault Trucks; Daimler Chrysler Om501LA with 402 hp. With.; MAN turbodiesel with a capacity of 455 hp. With.
Engine
The MAZ-6430 is equipped with a 4-stroke 6-cylinder in-line diesel engine model “YAMZ-650” (“YAMZ-658”) produced by the Yaroslavl Machine Plant. This power plant is distinguished by a brake system pneumatic compressor with a capacity of 500 l/min, an EDC-7 electronic unit from Bosch and a Common Rail fuel supply system. The engine is complemented by a ZF 16S221 manual gearbox.
The key systems of the unit include foreign components: a cruise control paddle switch, water and air radiators of the cooling system, an exhaust system muffler and an electronic fuel control pedal. The motor meets Euro-3 requirements.
Characteristics of the YaMZ-650 engine:
- working volume – 11.1 l;
- rated power - 242.6 (330) kW (hp);
- maximum torque – 1900 Nm.
The Minsk Automobile Plant also offers modifications with a similar 412-horsepower engine.
The restyled version of the MAZ-6430A9-1320-020, presented recently, is equipped with a powerful Renault turbocharged power unit.
Fuel consumption
MAZ-6430 consumes 26.9 liters of fuel per 100 km of travel. At the same time, the capacity of the truck’s fuel tank is 500 liters, which makes it possible to organize long cargo transportation without stopping for refueling.
Chassis
The chassis is a set of mobile units that requires retrofitting. It is logical that a car cannot be imagined without a semi-trailer, since without it the car will not be considered profitable. The name “chassis” can be of three types:
- Chassis-frame. This is a set of chassis, transmission and other important devices;
- Chassis-body. This is the link between the supporting body;
- Self-propelled chassis.
Major renovation
Procedure during engine overhaul:
- Place the transport on a special stand.
- Remove the power unit.
- Wash the motor.
- Carry out an external inspection of the mechanism for the presence of cracks on the block of cylindrical elements, an increase in the gap between the valves, and for runout of the crankshaft.
- Measure the correct geometry of the rubbing surfaces.
- Repair all cracks.
- Carry out restoration of guide type bushings.
- Sand the surface of the mechanism.
- Check the valves for tightness.
- Replace oil seals.
- Grind the crankshaft to the repair size of the liner.
- Replace piston rings, seals and gaskets.
- Add fresh oil.
Weekly check
The serviceability of the windshield washer is subject to control. The tightness of the nuts on the running and spare wheels, the fastening of the bracket, the condition of the rims, and the air pressure in the tires are checked.
After returning from a flight or once every two weeks at the base, leaks of oil, motor fluids, steering, heating system, shock absorbers, and cabin lifting mechanisms are checked. In addition, the fluid level in the control drive tank, contamination of the air supply filters, the electrolyte level of the battery tanks, and the absence of drops of condensate in the receivers are monitored.
In conclusion, it should be noted that MAZ-5440 vehicles are popular among owners of transport organizations as reliable working tractors with optimal technical characteristics. A comfortable ride for the driver of the car is of considerable importance, which allows vacancies for such driving to remain in demand.
