    The advantages of this power plant include high efficiency. Thanks to the new unit, the JCB 220 is 12% more productive than its closest competitors. The operator can control fuel consumption by selecting one of four operating modes: Economy, Precision, Lifting and Auto. The settings in them are optimized to solve specific problems.

    Low costs with maximum productivity are achieved through:

    1. oil recirculation bypassing the cylinders in the regenerative hydraulic system. This allows you to reduce fuel consumption and the duration of one cycle;
    2. possibility of switching to automatic idle mode. Engine speed drops when the hydraulic system is not engaged.

    Isuzu 4HK1X engines were designed to provide maximum comfort in maintenance. The oil cooler and intercooler are located in the same plane, which makes them easier to clean.

    The Hitachi 220 excavator is standardly equipped with a boom and handle, the length of which is 5680 millimeters and 2910 millimeters. With such working bodies, the equipment has very high maximum reach of the bucket. It is also worth noting that in comparison with previous models, this one is also distinguished by increased traction force and turning torque.

    The manufacturer has significantly improved the control of equipment when moving independently. Thanks to these changes, the rotational speed of the power plant's crankshaft automatically increases when maneuvering and lifting, since to carry out precisely these actions requires an increased traction force of the unit than during direct movement.

    The power part of the excavator itself includes a four-cylinder diesel engine of the AH-4HK1XYSA-02 brand. This unit was developed by another equally large Japanese company Isuzu. This engine uses direct fuel injection into the combustion chambers and a liquid cooling system. In it the camshaft is located at the top. In terms of environmental friendliness, the installation was also quite successful, since it fully complies with Tier II and Tier III standards, which allowed the excavator to enter the European market of special equipment. The main advantages of this engine are high structural strength, increased performance, reduced diesel fuel consumption, impressive service life, and maintainability.

    It is worth highlighting the Hitachi 220 tracked platform, the frame of which is already made in the traditional X-shaped form. Its design has additional reinforcements, which significantly increases strength and reliability. The upper and lower frame reinforcements are monolithic slabs, whereas earlier models of excavator equipment used ordinary welded slabs. Their replacement had a positive effect on the stability of the structure to various shock loads and shocks, which could lead to deformation of the platform. The dimensions of the upper support roller brackets, as well as the support rollers themselves, have been increased in size, thanks to which the manufacturer has achieved increased durability of the track elements. The track links, like the central frame, were reinforced, which gave a total increase in strength by 35 percent. Each track is driven by a two-speed axial piston hydraulic motor and a planetary gearbox. This ensures their reverse movement. The drive wheels of the excavator sides are interchangeable, which allows you to save on equipment maintenance.

    The excavator in its basic configuration has a counterweight, the mass of which is 5350 kilograms. This weight is quite enough to perform almost the entire range of work.

    The model uses an automatic transmission, which allows you to select the required travel speed. In total, two speeds can be selected, these are 3.3 kilometers per hour and 5.5 kilometers per hour. Compared to its wheeled counterparts, this model is very slow, which does not allow it to independently reach objects, which is also typical for any other tracked special equipment. For these purposes, a specialized trailer and tractor are always used. The parking brake in this model is hydraulic disc.

    Maintenance will not cause any particular difficulties and large financial and time costs for the owner. This is explained by several reasons:

    1. The large hood and turntable side doors allow service personnel access to all critical components, including those that require regular inspection.
    2. All service points were quite conveniently grouped, which makes it possible to reduce the time for replacing consumables, working fluids, and the time for lubrication of any components and mechanisms.
    3. All components of the Hitachi ZX220 excavator are quite widespread and have a very affordable price.
    4. Service intervals have been significantly extended.

    The machine has an advanced operator's cabin, which houses an on-board computer, a comfortable seat with full adjustment, a radio, air conditioning, a powerful heating system and controls made in the usual form of joysticks.     Japanese-assembled Hitachi ZW220-5A wheeled front loaders began arriving on the Russian market at the end of last year. Why is the new product attractive to domestic operating organizations?

    Japanese engineers used a six-cylinder in-line Cummins QSB6.7 diesel engine as a power unit. The cylinder diameter and piston stroke of the internal combustion engine are 107x124 mm. On the one hand, it is this type that allows you to optimize the operation of a diesel engine, including such an important parameter as fuel consumption. On the other hand, as practice shows, it is Common Rail that puts forward particularly stringent requirements for the quality and purity of fuel and is quite expensive to repair. Taking this circumstance into account, the creators of the loader included a multi-stage fuel filtration system in the design of the machine. Two fuel filters installed in series filter out suspended contaminants of varying purity. In addition to filters, the machine manufacturer (as specified in the operating instructions) requires the operator to perform a daily operation of draining water from the corresponding storage tank in the fuel tank. To drain the condensate, you must open the appropriate tap. One of the features of the power plants of machines designed to operate in highly dusty air conditions is an optionally ordered cooling system with radiators with a larger fin pitch. This technical solution makes it possible to reduce the likelihood of clogging the radiator honeycombs and, accordingly, ensure optimal thermal operation of the power unit. However, a reasonable question arises: is the heat transfer of a radiator modernized for high dust conditions reduced? As employees of the Russian representative office of Hitachi assured us, there is no need to worry about the temperature of the diesel engine, since the intensity of the radiator airflow (read “fan rotation speed”) is regulated automatically. We also note that Russian customers order a radiator with an increased pitch relatively rarely. Basically, buyers choose a cooling system with standard units. What is also important to mention when talking about the power unit is that the main difference between the Russian and European versions of the cars is the purity of their exhaust. Thus, Tier-3 standards are relevant for the Russian Federation, and more stringent Tier-4 standards are relevant for Europe. On the other hand, loaders supplied to the Russian market do not have an expensive particulate filter or other exhaust gas purification systems, which are very critical to the quality of fuel and oils. According to the designers, the car we are considering has an optimal combination of transmission and power unit characteristics, which allows us to reduce inefficient use of power to a minimum and optimize fuel consumption. The latter is very important for constantly loaded special equipment, especially given the steady increase in fuel costs. Fuel economy for the Hitachi ZW220-5A front loader is achieved by optimizing power transmission modes from the engine to the drive axles. In essence, we are talking about flexible, or more precisely, intelligent linking of the operation of the internal combustion engine and transmission in relation to the load. Three interconnected controllers are responsible for selecting the mode and controlling the power line of the loader. The first controls the operation of the internal combustion engine, the second is responsible for the transmission, and the third coordinates the operation of the first two. In this case, the control of the hydraulic line is under the control of the main controller. This is done, in particular, so that in a mode when the machine does not perform useful work on moving material (loading or unloading) and hydraulics, accordingly, are not involved, the entire power flow is redistributed to the drive axles. A few words about the features of the transmission used on the special vehicle. It has three operating modes. In the first, the operator shifts gears manually. This is necessary to perform a number of complex tasks where the automation may make an error, or forced engagement of one of the optimal, in the operator’s opinion, gears is required to perform a specific operation. The desired transmission stage (and there are five of them) is selected by moving the steering column switch lever to one position or another. If the automatic mode of operation of the transmission is activated (the control selector is moved to the “Auto 1” position), the loader moves using all stages of the transmission – from first to fifth gear inclusive. If the selector is in the second automatic position “Auto 2”, then the range is limited in the second gear (stages 2 to 5 are active). The first or second automatic modes are selected based on the operating conditions of the machine and the characteristics of the site where the work is being performed. As practice shows, in most cases, to ensure optimal operating speed of the loader, it is enough for the operator to set the gear reduction limit in the transmission to the second stage, that is, we are talking about the “Auto 2” mode. Let's briefly talk about the control of the Hitachi ZW220-5A. In the standard version of the machine it is lever. However, the option list also includes joysticks. The choice of one option or another entirely depends on the client’s financial capabilities and the need to use more modern controls. Let’s make a reservation right away: for Russia, simpler and more reliable levers are preferable. The loader cabin has a large glass area. On the one hand, this has a positive effect on the operator’s work comfort, on the other hand, it raises concerns that in winter, especially in the northern regions of Russia, the cabin will quickly get cold. As practice shows, the power of a standard stove is quite enough to create comfortable conditions for the operator and quickly clear ice from glass. At least dealers don’t put “dry hair dryers” in the cabin - there are no requests for this work. And who better than them to know the requirements of clients. All Hitachi ZW220-5A front loaders are equipped with a telemetric data transmission system. Consequently, clients have the opportunity, through their personal account on the Hitachi website, to receive information about the location of their equipment, its operating modes, including fuel consumption. Moreover, when the system generates “emergency” signals indicating the presence of certain malfunctions in the loader, the corresponding report is automatically generated and sent to the client and the dealer’s service department. The latter promptly responds to these messages, reducing equipment downtime for repairs.
