At New Holland Machine Company

was founded in 1895 when a young man named Abram Zimmerman bought a horse barn in New Holland, Pennsylvania, and established a blacksmith shop.[2] Zimmerman was the third of seven children born to Martin W. and Anna (Martin) Zimmerman. The Zimmermans were a very conservative Mennonite family. Abram Zimmerman was a mechanical genius[3] who took his talents to the new trade of blacksmithing when he began repairing and manufacturing farm equipment for local farmers.

Otto and Columbus engines

Abram Zimmerman began selling the German Otto Four-Stroke engine as part of his new business. The Otto was a single cylinder twin engine. The flywheel is a stationary engine that was manufactured in Philadelphia.[5] Some time after selling Otto, Abe Zimmerman switched to selling another single-cylinder stationary engine with two flywheels called the Columbus. Selling these engines at retail increased the income of Zimmerman's forge shop. By 1896, Blacksmith Zimmerman had three employees.[6] However, Zimmerman's innovative nature soon developed a "better idea."

"Frost-resistant" engine

Zimmerman thought he could build and manufacture his own stationary engine that would be lighter in weight and easier to repair and operate.[7] By 1900, he had developed his own stationary engine and built prototypes of the engine.[8]

Water cooling

Like most stationary engines of the time, Zimmermann's new engine was water-cooled—the jacket around the cylinder was filled with water to cool the engine during operation. Typically, water would evaporate while the engine was running, and more water would have to be added to the water jacket of a conventional engine as the day went on.

Risk of freezing

In winter, the water jacket had to be drained while the farmer was working on the engine. If not drained, the water will freeze in the water jacket, the ice will expand as it freezes, and this expansion will cause the cast iron engine to crack.

Zimmerman's solution

One of the innovations included in the new Zimmerman engine was that the water jacket was bowl-shaped and larger at the top than at the bottom. If water were left in the cup-shaped water jacket of this new engine on a cold winter night, the ice could expand harmlessly upward and outward without damaging the cylinder or engine casting. Thus, thanks to this cup-shaped water jacket, the new Zimmermann engine was "frost-proof".[9]

Registration

After completing prototypes of his new engine, Zimmerman now wanted to produce and sell his new engine. To do this, he needed to include and recruit new investors. Accordingly, Zimmerman raised $50,000 by selling 500 shares of the new company to his neighbors.[10] Thus, in 1903, the New Holland Machine Company was born.

Zimmerman was selected as chief executive of the new company.[6] With this new capital, the company purchased a brick factory on Franklin Street in New Holland and hired 40 employees to mass produce the new stationary engine.

Advantages of operating New Holland tractors

Since there are virtually no shortcomings in the design features of tractors, there are also no shortcomings during operation. New Holland is:

  • excellent traction parameters;
  • high cross-country ability, including in marshy areas;
  • the tractor is equipped with an electronic module, which greatly simplifies control;
  • compliance with environmental standards;
  • high productivity (models of the T8 series can measure two Kirovets) and load capacity;
  • the tractor “feels” great in difficult climatic conditions.

New Holland tractors are universal equipment, which is available with a huge range of attachments, which allows you to perform any type of agricultural work.

When purchasing, it is worth considering that independent repair of the tractor is almost impossible due to the complexity of the electronics, especially in field conditions. And replacing parts due to inaccessibility will be costly. Therefore, many prefer to use MTZ and Kirovtsy “the old fashioned way”.

Motor range

Ultimately, six different horsepower (hp) models of the New Holland stationary engine were mass-produced by New Holland. These six models started with a small ½ hp engine and were later enlarged to a 5 hp model. The top seller among the range of inboard engines offered by New Holland was the 5 HP model. By 1911, sales of the New Holland 5 hp stationary engine. increased by more than 253% compared to sales of the same engine in 1904.[11]

New Holland - Wikipedia in Russian

The history of New Holland dates back to 1895. Then in the town of New Holland ( Pennsylvania

) there was a small equipment repair shop with only one employee. The workshop was popular and soon, after less than 10 years of activity, it began to engage not in repairs, but in the production of agricultural machinery.

Now a large concern produces a full line of special equipment, which consists of more than 70 basic models. This includes:

  • New Holland wheeled excavators;
  • New Holland crawler excavators;
  • New Holland motor graders;
  • New Holland bulldozers;
  • New Holland front loaders;
  • Excavators – New Holland loaders;
  • New Holland Skid Steer Loaders.

The first New Holland backhoe loader was released in 1966.

In 1991, FIAT Spa, which also produced wheeled and tracked excavators, bought New Holland. The companies complement each other perfectly in terms of their products and geographic market coverage. In 1998, the corporation became even larger, accepting Orenstein & Koppel into its ranks. This merger provided the company with new proven technologies for the production of wheeled excavators and graders.

In 1999, Case and New Holland merged, and the CNH (Case New Holland) concern was born. In 2002, New Holland was joined by Kobelco, whose technology in the future will allow the introduction of a new CNH range. These will be front-end loaders, graders, bulldozers, and crawler excavators.

2005 was another important year for the corporation, which in January of this year united 5 regional brands: Kobelco, New Holland Construction, FIAT-Kobelco, O&K and Fiatallis into a single global brand New Holland.

In 2008, the company released a unique New Holland E215B crawler excavator, which is equipped with a “green” engine. Its emissions are much lower than established standards.

Today, the concern's factories are located in different parts of the world: in Italy, Brazil, Germany and the USA. There are dealerships in more than 160 countries around the world where you can buy a backhoe loader, excavator or any other equipment of this brand. You can buy a backhoe loader in Moscow from the official dealer - FKR Mashinari . The Company offers to buy a new or used backhoe loader at the Company's offices.

Despite the wide range of domestically produced products and other foreign brands represented, New Holland equipment is in demand on the Russian market. The growing demand for NewHolland equipment can be justified for various reasons, but the main reason is the best price/quality ratio on the market. New Holland equipment has higher performance, functionality and performance compared to domestic analogues; it costs more, but the price is competitive compared to foreign equipment from other brands.

With Russia's accession to the WTO, the supply of imported equipment will increase.

One of the most popular types of equipment is the backhoe loader.

New Holland backhoe loaders perform various types of work:

  • Moving cargo with a bucket;
  • Moving cargo using a gripper;
  • Work in bulldozer mode;
  • Filling of earthen embankments and shafts;
  • Digging pits, trenches;
  • Site planning.

New Holland backhoe loaders are highly productive. They are designed for excavation and loading and unloading operations. They are reliable, efficient and easy to operate, and can be equipped with various attachments.

Extension

Success accompanied the company from the very beginning. In its first annual report, dated March 29, 1904, the company was able to report a profit of $1,859.40 after its first year of incorporation.[12] Success in selling stationary engines led the New Holland Machine Company to enter the production of other agricultural machinery.

Feed chopper

Feed Grinder
As early as November 1899, before the company was even incorporated, Abe Zimmerman's blacksmith shop advertised a feed grinder of his own design. This "feed mill" had a capacity of 10 to 30 bushels of feed per hour and was offered to farmers for $15.[13]

Later, after registration, the New Holland Machine Company sold these feed choppers with the option of mounting on a wood or steel cart, as well as the option of mounting one of the four larger New Holland

engines (from 4 to 16 hp) mounted on a cart together with the forage harvester.[14] This way, the feed chopper and motor will be a single unit that can be easily moved around the farm.

Stone crusher and wood saw

Since joining the New Holland line, other machines have been added. In 1912, the company began producing its own rock crusher, and by 1914, New Holland Machine Company also added a wood saw to its line of agricultural machines.[15] By 1911 the company employed 150 people.[6] By 1927, the company's number of employees had increased to 225.[8]

New Holland tractors

New Holland is translated as “New Holland”. However, the company that makes tractors (as well as grain and forage harvesters, sprayers, hay balers, grape harvesters and other agricultural implements) is Italian. The head office (CNH Industrial) is located in the Netherlands. Today, most of the shares belong to Fiat Industrial.

New Holland tractors have been repeatedly recognized as the most innovative agricultural products. Thus, in 2013, a tractor model powered by hydrogen was presented, which was supposed to help farmers solve the issue of high fuel consumption. But even “standard” models embody the most advanced technologies combined with versatility. Tractors have access to all imaginable attachments, and thanks to the wide range of models (from mini tractors to giants), you can always choose the most convenient model. Why are they not so common in Russia? There are two reasons: inaccessibility of spare parts and high cost. Depending on the model, the price of tractors varies between 20-100 thousand euros.

The lineup

The range of New Holland tractors is very extensive. Today there are six lines, the representatives of which differ significantly:

  1. T4000 “Deluxe” - the lightest and smallest machines that are designed for “jewelry” work (for example, processing golf courses). At the same time, they have a fairly powerful 4- or 6-cylinder engine with 65-97 hp. (depending on the specific model) with turbocharging. Maximum speed – up to 40 km/h.
  2. TD5 unites representatives of the light class with a load capacity of up to 3.35 tons. A huge selection of attachments is available for models in this line. Control is simplified by a hydraulic transmission of the Synchro Shuttle brand (operates according to the formula “12 by 12” or “20 by 12”). The line includes only 5 representatives, not intended for intensive use or operation in harsh conditions.
  3. T6000 unites several series (“Plus”, “Elite”, “Delta”), each of which has its own modifications. In general, representatives of the T6000 are all-wheel drive, lightweight tractors with the ability to install almost any hitch. Engine power varies from 101 to 158 horsepower. T6000 is not used on an industrial scale. Their sphere is small private farmland.
  4. T7000 unites the middle class, whose representatives can be used not only on private lands. T7000 motor power is up to 240 hp. (achieved thanks to forced turbocharging), speed – up to 40 km/h. The main advantage is the electronic control module from CAN-BUS, which makes the tractor easy to operate. The most “bright” representative is the T7060. Its weight is 8.12 tons, and its turning radius is only 6.2 m. It is a real all-rounder, reliable and economical. The cost is about 100 thousand dollars.
  5. T8000 is the most popular and widespread New Holland series in the world, despite the fairly high price of the products (from 200 thousand dollars). T8000 is a middle class with a load capacity of 10 tons. The scope of application of tractors is small agricultural enterprises and farms, public utilities and construction. The most famous representative that can be found in Russia is T8040. This is a universal row-crop machine of impressive dimensions (length - 5.83 m, width - 2.49 m) with a load capacity of more than 10 tons. The tractor is adapted for intensive use and adverse working conditions.
  6. T9000 replaced T8000 in 2011. Like the previous series, it belongs to the heavy class, but unlike it, it can also be equipped with tracked modules. Scope of application: large farmland, construction.

Specifications

The technical characteristics of New Holland differ significantly depending on whether they belong to a particular series. But there are a number of general parameters:

  • The equipment is equipped with an electronic automatic transmission “Power Command”, which has excellent ergonomics, so there is no loss of power when switching;
  • most models are designed with HI-eSCR technology, which consumes 10% less fuel than analogues;
  • the brand of engine installed on tractors is “Cummins” with 4- or 6-cylinders (on some models “Iveco” is installed;
  • the range of medium and heavy models are all-wheel drive (according to the “4 by 4” scheme), the minimum turning radius is achieved due to the articulated frame.

The main advantage of New Holland is the cabin. A wide viewing angle, effective noise and heat insulation, absence of vibrations, air conditioning, convenient location of the control relay are combined with a spacious interior. All information about the operation of the equipment is displayed on an electronic display. Unfortunately, all information will be indicated in English.
