A motor cultivator is a useful agricultural equipment that greatly simplifies soil cultivation. The main structural element of a walk-behind tractor is the engine. The equipment is equipped with various engine options; Briggs & Stratton is widely used. Most models run on gasoline and can be purchased in Moscow.
The lineup
A large number of different engines are produced under the Briggs Stratton brand, most of which are installed on the cultivator. The lineup is represented by several models, which are classified according to the following characteristics:
- Power. For most work, only 3 hp is enough. More powerful equipment is used to process large areas of land.
- Number of cylinders. As this indicator increases, the power of the device increases, but the design becomes more complicated.
- Volume. By increasing engine volume, the amount of fuel burned increases.
Other components that are required for the operation of walk-behind tractors are also supplied with the engine. The gearbox is intended to convert rotation, the tank is for temporary storage of fuel, which will be supplied to the engine after mixing with air.
450 series
A similar series is intended for domestic use, installed on walk-behind tractors and cultivators, lawn mowers and other similar equipment. The design features of the 148CC are that they are not picky about the quality of the fuel used. Therefore, refueling can be carried out using grade A-92. The key points of the device are as follows:
- The block has only 1 cylinder.
- Overhead valve arrangement and vertical power take-off shaft.
- The air filter is made of foam rubber.
- Branded ignition system. It provides easy engine starting in various conditions.
- A system responsible for automatically shutting down the engine when the oil level is insufficient. It eliminates the possibility of increased wear and tear of the structure due to untimely maintenance and leaks.
If necessary, you can purchase all branded components for installation on the frame. Repairs are often done with your own hands, because... Everything you need for this is on sale.
500 series
The single-cylinder engine with a horizontal and vertical power take-off shaft has an aluminum liner, the power indicator can vary between 3.5 and 5.5 hp. A similar model is installed on a large number of different cultivators and lawn mowers.
The advantage of the considered version is the presence of a built-in automatic decompressor and a mechanical regulator of the number of revolutions at the output.
At the same time, the manufacturer paid a lot of attention to the development of an effective muffler, which reduces the noise level during operation.
The manufacturer also took care of reducing the amount of harmful substances released into the atmosphere. Special technology made it possible to reduce the figure by 72% compared to standard motors.
An air filter and a manual starter are responsible for mixing air with fuel. The spark plugs are original and, if treated with care, can last for a long period. Model 158CC is perfect for solving various household tasks.
650 series
The 190 CC version is installed on cultivators from a wide range of brands. The features of this model are as follows:
- The engine is 4-stroke.
- The device runs on AI-92 gasoline, so there will be no problems with refueling.
- Manual starter. To start the engine, you need to pull the handle and set the flywheel in motion.
The vertical shaft arrangement provides more efficient power intake. The internal part of the structure is represented by an aluminum sleeve, the power of the device is 5 hp. When creating the series under consideration, an automatic decompressor and a mechanical regulator were installed. The developed technology allows reducing emissions into the atmosphere by 60%.
Signs of a fake
- Label . Manufacturers of counterfeits forget to indicate all the necessary data on the label. Before purchasing car oil, find out what the original label looks like.
- Color . Typically, counterfeit petroleum products are much darker than the real thing.
- Structure . The original lubricant does not leave sediment and does not contain various foreign particles.
- Price . It is suspicious if car oil from a well-known manufacturer costs mere pennies. If the price of a petroleum product is too low, know that it is most likely a fake.
- Paper test . High-quality oil does not leave a visible trace, flowing down a simple piece of paper. A fake leaves a dark trail behind itself.
On the left is fake oil with poor-quality seams and roughness.
Attachments
To significantly expand the capabilities of the walk-behind tractor, various attachments are installed. The most widely used are:
- Plows.
- Seeders.
- Dumps.
- Mowers.
When choosing, you need to pay attention to what kind of towbar is required. In some cases, thrust from the engine is transmitted to attachments through an intermediate element.
How much to fill
Most walk-behind tractors presented on the Russian market are equipped with engines from the HondaGX family, their Chinese clones, or Subaru-Robin engines of a similar design.
For a one-time full filling of such an engine with oil, no more than 0.6 liters of oil will be required - which is why this packaging volume is popular among manufacturers. More powerful modifications of these engines can hold a liter or more of oil.
A number of engines, the design of which includes an additional reduction gearbox, have a separate space for its lubrication.
Operating and maintenance instructions
With proper operation and maintenance of the equipment, it can operate for a long period. The operating instructions are as follows:
- Equipment is assembled and installed, all elements are connected.
- Engines are supplied dry. This moment determines that you need to purchase a suitable lubricant and pour it into the structure. Some models work with a fuel mixture that includes oil.
- The first start must be done carefully. To do this, select idle mode, the engine warms up for several minutes.
- After working for the first 20 minutes, it is recommended to drain the old oil, after which new oil is added. This is due to the fact that at the time of grinding in the main elements, metal shavings may get into the lubricant.
- For the first few hours, it is recommended to use the cultivator at 2/3 power. This will eliminate the possibility of various malfunctions.
- At first, it is recommended to monitor the engine temperature, because... there is a possibility of it overheating.
- If the engine is unstable, you need to stop the walk-behind tractor and then find the cause of the problem.
- After operating the equipment, the surface should be cleaned of various contaminants. In addition, the condition of all main elements is checked, because further operation with malfunctions is not allowed.
Maintenance includes timely oil changes. In this case, you need to periodically add lubricant to the gearbox.

Prices and analogues
The complex design of the internal combustion engine determines a significant increase in its cost. The products of the brand in question are sold at prices ranging from 15 to 30 thousand rubles. When choosing analogues, you can also pay attention to motors that are produced under the following brands:
- Lifan.
- Honda.
- Agromotor.
When choosing, attention is paid to the volume of the combustion chamber, power and the cooling system used. The most common options are air-cooled, because... they are much easier to use and cheaper.
Correct installation of the engine on the walk-behind tractor will ensure its long-term operation. Tools and plumbing skills are required to complete the job. Don’t forget that you have to drain the oil and fuel in the winter.
Motor oils for walk-behind tractors of popular brands
Certain motor oils may be suitable for lubricating the engines of various walk-behind tractors. Let's look at which lubricants comply with the instructions of the most popular engine manufacturers for agricultural machinery.

How to check the ignition coil in a small engine
Hazard warnings
: When attempting to start the engine or equipment, avoid any rotating, moving parts or other hazardous areas.
The coil is probably the easiest to test, so it's the first thing to check when troubleshooting your ignition system.
Checking the coil or armature
- Step 1
: Attach one end of the spark plug indicator (P/N 19368) to the ignition cable and the other end to the cylinder head as shown below.
If a spark appears in the indicator gap, the ignition coil is working normally. If not, it needs to be replaced.
Does the engine stop while running? Install the indicator between the ignition cable and the spark plug and start the engine. When he stops, watch the window.
Common mistakes when checking coils
- Be sure to disconnect the coil from the equipment wiring harness as well as the engine wiring harness and use the spark plug indicator. Many technicians mistakenly replace a service coil because the coil's ground wire is shorted to a piece of sheet metal.
- DO NOT connect an indicator to the spark plug to check this. This may start the engine. You won't be able to turn it off without a ground wire installed.
