The front bearing is pressed into the engine crankshaft bore. During assembly, the bearing cavity is filled with Litol lubricant and sealed with a cuff.
The rear bearing is secured against axial movements in the front wall of the YaMZ-236 gearbox housing and the bearing cover using a retaining ring. The front end of the secondary shaft 14 rests on a roller bearing placed in the socket of the primary shaft.
The rear end of the secondary shaft of the YaMZ-236 gearbox rests on a ball bearing secured by a retaining ring in the crankcase wall and cover.
A flange 16 is installed on the splines of the rear end of the secondary shaft for fastening the propeller shaft of the vehicle.

The intermediate shaft 17 is mounted on two roller bearings. The front end of the intermediate shaft of the YaMZ-236 gearbox has a groove for driving the oil pump.
The reverse gear block 27 rotates on two roller bearings mounted on a fixed axis 26. All gears of the YaMZ-236 gearbox of the MAZ-5551, MAZ-5335, 5336, 5337 and Ural-4320, 43206, Ural-5557 vehicles have spiral teeth, except for the first gear spur gears, the reverse gear and the power take-off gear.
The gears of the second, third and fifth gears and a pair of gears driving the intermediate shaft of the YaMZ-236 gearbox are in constant mesh. The gears of the second, third and fifth gears of the secondary shaft of the YaMZ-236 gearbox are mounted on steel plain bearings that have a special configuration, coating and impregnation. Shockless engagement of the second, third, fourth and fifth gears is ensured by two synchronizers 6 and 10.
The YaMZ-236 inertial type gearbox synchronizer allows the gear coupling of the carriage to engage with the gear coupling of the gear only when the angular velocities of rotation of the gear and shaft are equalized. The speed equation is carried out using a friction pair - a synchronizer cone ring and a cone on the gear. Activation of first gear and reverse gear of the YaMZ-236 gearbox is carried out by moving gear 12 along the splines of the secondary shaft until it fully engages with the corresponding gear. In the top cover of the YaMZ-236 gearbox of the MAZ-5551, MAZ-5335, 5336, 5337 and Ural-4320, 43206, Ural-5557 vehicles there is a three-way gear shift mechanism.
Forks are attached to the rods of the shift mechanism, which, when the rods move, move the synchronizer carriages or the first gear and reverse gear. The rods are held in the desired position by ball locks 7. To protect against accidental engagement of two gears at the same time, the YaMZ-236 gearbox has a locking device (type A–A), consisting of a pin and two pairs of balls; when any rod moves, the other two are locked with balls , which fit into the corresponding grooves on the rods. To protect against erroneous engagement of reverse gear and first gear, spring fuse 32 is used. To engage reverse gear or first gear, the additional force of the fuse spring must be overcome. Through gear 23 (Fig. 53), power can be taken to drive additional units. The power take-off mechanism of the YaMZ-236 gearbox is attached to one of the flanges with hatches located on both sides of the gearbox housing. The YaMZ-236 gearbox is equipped with a speedometer drive mechanism located in the cover 15 of the rear bearing of the secondary shaft (view B–B). The lubrication system of the YaMZ-236 gearbox of the MAZ-5551, MAZ-5335, 5336, 5337 and Ural-4320, 43206, Ural-5557 vehicles is mixed.
The sliding bearings of the secondary shaft gears are lubricated under pressure. The rolling bearings, gears and gear shift mechanism are splash lubricated. Oil is sucked from the crankcase oil bath through an intake and a channel system by a gear oil pump installed on the front wall of the YaMZ-236 gearbox housing and driven from the intermediate shaft. The oil intake is covered with a mesh and has a permanent magnet to catch small metal particles in the oil. The oil pump is equipped with a pressure reducing valve adjusted to a pressure of 80±10 kPa (0.8±0.1 kgf/cm2). In the YaMZ-236 gearbox of MAZ-5551, MAZ-5335, 5336, 5337 and Ural-4320, 43206, Ural-5557 vehicles, oil is poured through a hole in the top cover, closed with a plug, to the level of the control hole located on the left side of the crankcase. The filling capacity of the gearbox lubrication system is 5.5 l. The internal cavity of the YaMZ-236 gearbox housing communicates with the atmosphere using a breather. Possible configurations of YaMZ-236 gearboxes The YaMZ-236 U gearbox differs from the 236P in the presence of a gear shift lever; there is no flange on the output shaft cover for the speedometer drive parts. Gearbox YaMZ-236 U3 - 236U for diaphragm clutch. It differs in the size of the clutch release clutch and the presence of a bracket for engaging the clutch release coil spring. The YaMZ-236 U4 and 236U gearboxes are sealed, distinguished by cast clutch starter hatch covers, a breather is installed on the top cover, and a plug on the bottom. Gearbox YaMZ-236 U5 - 236U3 in a sealed design for a diaphragm clutch. It is distinguished by cast clutch starter hatch covers, a breather is installed on the top cover, and a plug on the bottom. YaMZ-236 gearboxes can be equipped with a sealed clutch housing. The oil volume in the gearbox housing is 5.5+0.3 l.

Information for users of vehicles with YaMZ power units equipped with eight-speed YaMZ-238A gearboxes
In 1998, Tutaevsky Motor Plant OJSC mastered the production of modernized eight-speed gearboxes of the YaMZ-238VM family with a small-sized planetary range, instead of YaMZ-238A gearboxes. In this regard, in 2001, the production of YaMZ-238A gearboxes ceased. The new gearboxes, having similar user characteristics to the YaMZ-238A gearboxes (gear ratios, realized engine power, maintenance, etc.) significantly exceed them in reliability, range life, ease of control, size and weight. The effectiveness of using YaMZ-238VM gearboxes determines the advisability of using them instead of used YaMZ-238A gearboxes on vehicles in use. When replacing YaMZ-238A gearboxes with YaMZ-238VM gearboxes, the following are retained: - gear shift drive, - range shift control drive, - clutch release drive, - speedometer drive, - power take-off from the side crankcase hatches. Due to the smaller dimensions along the length, it is only necessary to replace or modify the driveshaft (extension) and move the rear (supporting) support. If necessary, more specific recommendations for replacing the gearbox can be obtained by users from the Office of the Chief Designer of Avtodizel OJSC. JSC "Avtodizel" Office of the Chief Designer
