Under the hood of the car there is a four-cylinder diesel power unit of the 1004-40T brand, the development of which was carried out specifically for this type of special vehicles. The key advantages of this power plant are the following:
- The engine has a large reserve of torque, starting from its idle speed.
- There is a counter-flow oil filter valve that keeps oil in the filter housing when the engine is off. Thus, the subsequent start-up of the unit is carried out on clean oil. This also makes maintenance even more convenient, since no oil is spilled when replacing this filter.
- The fuel system is equipped with a special water separator, thanks to which water is separated from the fuel, which ensures proper and long-term operation of the engine.
- The air supply system was equipped with a self-cleaning filter. The air intake has been moved to a more suitable location. This is done to ensure that the engine uses cold and clean air, which also affects its proper operation.
- Lubrication points are conveniently located, which further facilitates the maintenance process of the backhoe loader.
The Perkins 1004-40T is characterized by high performance and at the same time low fuel consumption. The engine has a water pump, a turbocharging system and a heating device, which is very useful when operating in fairly cold conditions. It is worth noting that some versions of this backhoe loader are equipped with an atmospheric engine.
The latest modified versions are more equipped with a diesel particulate filter, which causes increased back pressure on the engine. An alternative to this was an improved combustion system, which had a positive effect not only on increasing power, but also on fuel economy.
Optionally, the machine can be equipped with a torque locking system called JCB TORQUE LOCK. This system is activated automatically when operating in fourth gear (if a Powershift gearbox is installed) or when mode “A” is turned on (if an Autoshift gearbox is installed). This system allows you to reduce fuel consumption by 25 percent and increase the speed of movement of equipment uphill by 10 percent.

The cab design is also equipped with two halogen headlights, four working headlights and two rear lights, thanks to which the machine can work in conditions with rather poor visibility. In general, the cabin was comfortable and very successful in terms of design, but in addition to numerous advantages, it also has its disadvantages. The weak side of the cabin turned out to be the not entirely successful placement of glass that is glued into the openings, which is why various damage often appears, and their elimination takes a very long time.
