The changes mainly affected the exterior of the cabin. The engine range has been expanded. Production of the first generation continued for another 8 years. The second generation Mercedes Atego appeared in 2013. The design of the model was changed as part of the company’s new style, bringing it as close as possible to the appearance of the “bigger brother” Mercedes Actros. Atego BlueTec Hybrid, the first production hybrid truck in Europe, has been delivered to more than 110 customers since its market launch in 2010. Parallel hybrid technology

The Atego BlueTec Hybrid is based on the parallel hybrid principle: a four-cylinder diesel engine OM 924 (Euro V EEV, displacement 4.8 l, 160 kW corresponding to 218 hp at 2200 rpm) is combined with a water-cooled electric motor. engine (peak power 44 kW corresponds to 60 hp) and a lithium-ion battery on the vehicle frame. The three-phase permanent magnet motor is located between the clutch and the automatic transmission. This drive configuration allows both motors to drive the truck individually or together. If the battery is sufficiently charged through braking or coasting, pure electric starting is possible – for example in urban pedestrian areas or in environmental areas. The diesel engine idles and only comes fully on when power consumption increases. Using the standard start/stop function also reduces fuel consumption, emissions and noise levels.

Technical characteristics of Mercedes Atego 1222 / 1224

10 years ago, the Mercedes Atego 1223 was discontinued, but even trucks from the first year of production (1999) in good condition are still found on the secondary market. The car really has a safety margin, although many drivers rate it approximately the same as the products of Mercedes Trucks' main competitor - MAN. However, the Atego 1223 has a slight advantage in the availability and cost of parts, which is why this car has a better position in the used format.

Unlike the cheaper version of the MAN L tractor - the Belarusian MAZ-4370 medium-duty truck - the Mercedes Atego has a modern panel with rich vehicle control and diagnostic capabilities. In particular, this makes the inspection process a little easier: you can buy a Mercedes Atego 1223 based only on the dashboard. In turn, it is recommended to start diagnostics with electronics, since failures in it can give rise to new ones and hide current problems of the transmission, suspension, and engine.

Atego 12 Series engines

The 1223rd model works with motors OM 906.915 and OM 906.910. These are proven and reliable diesel engines with a power of 170 kW (231 hp). Apart from the fact that they are a little outdated, their performance can be considered quite good, and in terms of durability they are the main advantage of the car. The new options installed on the Mercedes Atego 1222 are distinguished by cleaner exhaust and better efficiency, but the power characteristics and torque distribution remain within the same limits.


The efficiency and reliability of Atego engines attracts many buyers, but the performance characteristics of the engine add just as many points of popularity.

The Mercedes Atego 1224 is equipped with a six-cylinder version of this engine, producing a maximum of 238 hp. The four cylinders OM 924.920 on the Mercedes Atego 1222 produce 218 hp. At the same time, the torque of both engines is almost the same: maximum – 810 and 850 N∙m in the range of 1200-1600 rpm.

Significant savings can be achieved with the Telligent® engine management system, but this part is not a feature of the Atego 1222 and Mercedes Atego 1224, since it is installed on all cars in the series. Also, as for other Atego, the 1222 and 1224 are offered as an option with the installation of a start-stop system, which allows more precise dosing of the load on the engine.

Dimensions and chassis

As with all Atego 1222 and 1224, there are several types of cabins available. The standard version assumes the following dimensions:

  • External width - 2295 mm;
  • Internal width - 2000 mm;
  • External length - 1650 mm;
  • Internal height - 1510 mm.

The extended length of the standard cabin has the same geometric characteristics in height and width, but is longer - 1830 mm in external measurement. Cabin dimensions affect weight distribution; there are differences between models:

  • Permissible vehicle weight – 11.9 tons (Mercedes Atego 1224, 1222 and 1223);
  • Axle distribution – 4.4 on the front axle, 8.1 tons on the rear.
  • The maximum weight of the road train is 22 tons for Atego 1222 and 1223, 28 tons for Atego 1224 (due to better engine characteristics).

The maximum length of the 12th series is 9865 mm; 8235 mm of them can be allocated for placing cargo. In terms of equipment, Mercedes offers many ready-made options, among which we can highlight the installation of a tipper body and a tipper structure with the possibility of three-way unloading. Refrigerators, cranes, etc. are being installed.


The multifunctional frame of Atego 1223 and Atego 1222 allows the installation of all types of superstructures; several length options are available.

Equipment Atego 1222 and 1224

For obvious reasons, much of what can be seen in the modern version of 12-tonne engines is not present in the Mercedes Atego 1223. Used cars for the most part simply do not need these options, but some would have come in handy in any case. For example, the buyer had the opportunity to choose between springs and air suspension 10 years ago and today, but height adjustment is structurally different and the customization capabilities of the modern ERN system are much wider.

Modern Mercedes Atego 1222 and 1224 are equipped with an electric torch cold start mechanism and an engine braking mechanism with a constant throttle. The main brakes of a car can be either full disc, or disc for the front axle and drum for the rear. The dual-circuit system, controlled by ABS, maintains a constant pressure of 10 bar. It is possible to install a “counter-rollback” and a brake lining alignment system.

The gearbox is standard for all Ategos - a six-speed Telligent. It is possible to install a manual gearbox and automatic transmission (MB G85 - 6.7 - 0.73), as an additional option - a rear differential lock. A tachograph, electric lifts, heated glass, a drive for the sunroof are included in the basic kit, additional cabin insulation and cruise control are available for an extra charge.


It is recommended to clean the coarse and fine oil filter during each maintenance; fortunately, it is easy to get: it is located under the valve cover.

They are supplied directly from Germany, where there is a dense network of auto component manufacturers, each of which has mastered the production of a wide range of spare parts for the popular Mercedes-Benz Atego in Europe. Mercedes Atego 1223, mileage – 870 thousand km

We took an Atego with mileage, although the mileage (390 thousand) was only in Germany. I was attracted by the relatively low price and availability of the service. For the first 120 thousand km nothing happened. Breakdowns began after 550 thousand km. It seems to me that 500 thousand is the strength life of most Atego parts. With a difference of 10-30 thousand km, the viscous coupling, clutch, injector nozzles, brake modulators (I didn’t have to change them - I sorted them out with my own hands) and almost all the shock absorbers, including those from the cabin, failed (hello to Russian roads).

Repair is easier than some analogues. Almost everything can be done with your own hands, except electronics. The wheel can be removed in 10 minutes. Unlike MAZs, go through technical inspection. Inspection after your own repair is quite possible. The electrical wiring is not installed very well - it rots, but these parts can be changed yourself. Excellent control, dynamic engine, flawless operation in cold weather. If you fill up with normal diesel fuel and don’t carry 7 tons, the Mercedes Atego 1223 is simply an indestructible car.

Mercedes-Benz Atego 1222, mileage - 180 thousand km.

The choice towards Mercedes is associated with the availability of parts and a long service interval. Maintenance is required every 30 thousand km. Costs 17-19 thousand rubles. Eats approximately 19-21 liters per 100 km. The second factor was the comfortable cabin. In the Mercedes Atego 1222, a lot is done humanly, without unnecessary problems. Plus, a dashboard similar to that of the Axor is offered. The dealer found an option with a 50 cubic meter euro blind. An excellent option for long and short distance transportation.

In winter, consumption can increase to 22-23, but both in winter and in summer the car can and should be loaded to the limit. We often carry 6-7 tons, without any serious breakdowns so far. The only downside I can mention is the high prices.

    City - highway - traffic jam...

    The car chosen for the test is not a “construction worker” or a “utility worker”, which means that it is prescribed to run not only over short distances. That's why I asked the instructor to lay out a mixed route that included populated areas, local highways and frequent junctions. The instructor cheated - he included a large section of the autobahn in the route. In this case, the speed of the distance increased, the average speed increased, and travel time and fuel consumption fell. But the number did not work: on the highway we got stuck in a traffic jam due to an accident, and then lost time in traffic caused by the narrowing of the roadway at the road repair site. The expectation of ideal test data as a result of forced downtime did not materialize. But, looking ahead, I will note: even in conditions of a ragged rhythm and long idling, the car loaded to its full weight showed good results.

    The advantage of a low cabin is that it does not create such blind spots as, say, MegaSpace. The window line is closer to road level, and therefore the blind spots on the left and right are much smaller than with heavy trucks. At least, not only a business class car, but also a simple compact car cannot hide in these traps.

    Maneuvering the long-wheelbase Atego in city traffic turned out to be no more difficult than any other truck of the same class. Thanks to responsive steering and good visibility, the driver remains confident. The grippy disc brakes and small turning radius only strengthen confidence in the car’s capabilities, and the “junior” does not disappoint in any way.

    On the autobahn, it is generally appropriate to compare the behavior of the “junior” not with the flagship, but with the Axor. However, there are differences here too. Atego does not have a retarder, since the mode of use of the machine is different from that of the main line. A typical Atego regional copes well with transport tasks and with the equipment it has. But the long wheelbase makes its own adjustments here too. You can’t say about the car that it twists into corners, since the high center of gravity does not allow you to safely perform such a maneuver at high speed. Therefore, when leaving the highway onto another highway, you need to be extremely careful. And when changing lanes outside the city, say, to overtake, it is not recommended to make a sudden jerk with the steering wheel.

    We must not forget about the high windage created by the huge body area. When leaving sections of the highway, sandwiched on both sides by forest, into open space, the impact of the side wind on the steering wheel is noticeable. And if there is not dry asphalt under the wheels, it is more expensive for yourself to lose vigilance. Only in a mode where the speedometer shows no more than 70 km/h and small cars don’t rush past like scalded cars can you truly relax. The machine follows a given trajectory more stably than a tram on rails. And despite the fact that the “junior” rank does not have much of what Axor and Actros are equipped with, it is good in its own way. Its behavior on the road does not raise concerns about the safety of the cargo on board and the timeliness of delivery. And in cargo transportation this is the main thing.
