Test drive of the new Renault Trafic 3: aka Gosha, aka Goga, aka Zhora

Updated Renault Trafic minibus presented

The Renault Trafic commercial family has existed for forty years, during which time more than two million vehicles have been produced, but now only the third generation is in service. It debuted in 2014, and now it's time for a major upgrade. The passenger versions were the first to be modified - the “regular” Renault Trafic Combi and the richest version of the Renault Trafic SpaceClass, which can have up to nine seats.

Following the larger Renault Master model, the updated Trafic has a more sophisticated front design: not only the bumper and grille have been changed, but also the headlights (now LED) and the bonnet. However, the sidewalls with a characteristic curve remained recognizable.

The salon has also become much more solid than before. The new front panel has rectangular ventilation deflectors and strict rows of buttons. The old instrument cluster with a digital speedometer, borrowed from Renault cars, has given way to classic instrumentation with two large scales and a trip computer display in the center.

The new Easy Link media system has an eight-inch screen and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functions. The right front airbag is now larger in size and is designed for two passengers, because Trafic can have both a regular seat and a two-seater “sofa”. The number and volume of various places for storing small items have been increased.

Finally, Trafic has acquired a modern set of electronic assistants. It includes automatic braking, lane warning and blind spot monitoring systems, as well as adaptive cruise control.

There are minimal changes in the range of power units. There are still three versions of the 2.0 dCi turbodiesel available to choose from, which appeared in Traffic last year. The basic version produces 110 hp. and is coupled with a six-speed manual transmission. The power of the middle version has been increased from 146 to 150 hp; such a minibus can have either a manual gearbox or an EDC robot with two clutches. And the most powerful 170-horsepower diesel engine can only be combined with a robotic gearbox.

Sales of the updated minibuses in Europe will begin in March 2021. Vans and cargo-passenger versions will be updated next, and in addition, the Traffic twins, of which there are only two left, are the Nissan NV300 for Europe and the Mitsubishi Express for Australia and New Zealand.

Updated Renault Trafic: now also a cargo version with 10 new driver assistants

The update of the Renault Trafic family of commercial vehicles has been delayed, which may have a negative impact on sales this year. In 2020, Trafic, according to the analytical agency JATO Dynamics, became the third most popular model in the single-ton LCV segment in Europe: 62,007 units were sold, while the first-place Ford Transit Custom sold 109,763 units, and VW took second place. Transporter - 73,817 pcs.

Restyling brought Trafika a new, more strict design of the front end and LED headlights as standard, but the rear remained unchanged. The van has more unpainted plastic in its design than the minibus, but it cannot be said that it looks worse for this. The cargo version is available with a standard (3098 mm) and extended (3498 mm) wheelbase, overall length - 5080 and 5480 mm, respectively.

Two height options are also available: 1971 and 2495 mm for the standard version, 1967 and 2498 mm for the long wheelbase. There is also a “tadpole” based on the long-wheelbase version, that is, a cabin with a platform on which any add-on can be installed. The van's body volume, depending on the version, varies from 5.8 to 8.9 cubic meters. In the partition between the cabin and the cargo compartment, you can order a hatch for long items.

The driver's seat is now designed in a German style, the front panel has become more straightforward and angular. Functional updates include a wireless smartphone charging shelf, three USB ports and a new Easy Link multimedia system with an 8-inch touch screen and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone interfaces, but in cheap versions there will be a box with a simple radio instead. The passenger front airbag is now wide, designed for two people, as, in fact, the passenger seat itself. The left side of the backrest of this chair folds down and turns into a multifunctional table. The total volume of shelves, pockets and drawers for small items is 88 liters.

Last year, the pre-restyling Renault Trafic performed very poorly in the Euro NCAP tests for active safety due to the meager provision of electronic driver assistants. The update brought Trafika ten new assistants at once, including an automatic emergency braking system, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, a traffic sign recognition system and a rear view camera.

The engines are the same as those of the minibus, more precisely one 2.0-liter urea diesel engine with three maximum power options - 110, 150 and 170 hp. The default transmission is a 6-speed manual; for the 150- and 170-horsepower versions, an EDC automatic with two clutches is offered as an option.

Renault Trafic is not officially presented in Russia, nor are its clones Mitsubishi Express and Nissan NV300. There is also a third clone - the Fiat Talento, but it is not yet known whether it will be updated along with the rest of its relatives or whether this model, following the example of the larger Opel Movano, will move to the Stellantis corporation platform.

Renault Traffic 2022 2022 - video test drive

One of the most respected members of the Renault family, the 2022 Renault Traffic van in a new body, has finally received an update that has not been seen since 2011. The modified appearance of the 2022 Renault Trafic 2022 is distinguished by a huge logo and wide large headlights, which give the new product an expressive look. Protective plastic trims on the sills and clear lines on the wheel arches emphasize the aggressiveness of the updated van.

The front part of the roof is raised. Thanks to this, the driver's position becomes much easier, and large mirrors with additional spherical rear-view mirrors will allow you to see even small objects that are behind. The rear doors have an opening angle of 270 degrees, and the low loading height is now just 550 mm. This will make transporting heavy loads much easier.

Looking at the van from the front, at first it seemed to me that the guys from Renault only updated the headlights. And they didn't add xenon or the latest optical technology. Only the shape and size of the headlights have changed. Now they look more like the wings of some kind of bird, which reach almost to the beginning of the windshield. This made it possible to raise the radiator grille much higher and make it larger.

The front bumper and additional lights below have not changed their appearance. They remained approximately in their same places. The only thing is that they framed the additional optics with pieces of plastic. The side door opens the same way. The side mirrors were made somewhat flattened. Now they look more like a square.

A look from the inside

The interior space can be characterized in two words - thoughtfulness and aesthetics. Having seen the first photos of the new Renault Traffic, for some reason it seemed that there would be less free space inside, but I was wrong. With a wheelbase of 3.5 meters, you can place quite a lot of cargo there. It's very easy to get used to the multi-functional dashboard. Here everything is at hand, you don’t have to reach anywhere, and with the help of the display you can find your way to your destination. Access to the cabin will be facilitated by wide doorways, while the doors do not need to be opened completely, and door pockets will allow you to store a large number of useful things.

Renault Traffic 2022

Renault Trafic 2022. Renault has updated its popular Trafic minivan. This minivan has sold thousands of copies around the world. Moreover, it was used equally successfully both as a commercial van and for transporting passengers.

The noticeably updated 2022 model, although fresher, acquired modern and outwardly beautiful optics, remained just as recognizable in profile. To be honest, I never liked this car, precisely because of its side view. It felt like it was some kind of tadpole out of proportion.

The new Renault Traffic 2022, although it acquired additional side edges, retained this feature, although not so clearly expressed. But from the front, he’s just handsome. The front design is very fresh and modern.

Salon

Fresh solutions have also been applied inside. Although the Renault Traffic 2022 feels budget-friendly, the materials are well adjusted, but made from inexpensive plastics, fabrics and even leather.

The low glazing line of the front part creates excellent visibility and a feeling of lightness and spaciousness. The plump steering wheel is very comfortable, and the gear selector, located at hand on the tide of the front panel, is also convenient.

The passenger compartment of a full-fledged minibus, there is a transformation system that allows you to turn the passengers facing each other. There are also folding tables. In general, this is a full-fledged minibus that will perfectly perform its functions as a mobile office or a car for business transfers.

Depending on the length of the Renault Trafic 2022 wheelbase, and there can be two of them (short and long), the volume of cargo space can be from 5.3 m3 to 6.3 m3, load capacity up to 1200 kg.

Renault Traffic 2022 is equipped with a 1.6-liter diesel engine 115 hp/190 Nm or 140 hp/290 Nm. As an alternative, there is a two-liter petrol engine with 116 horsepower.

As for me, the Renault Trafic 2022 has noticeably freshened up and become noticeably prettier. We have not officially announced any sales yet. But if it does appear with us, it will find its buyer, first of all, who doesn’t want to drive the Peugeot-Citroen-Opel twins... But the key will be the price.

Regarding the passenger model, the creators paid special attention to the comfort of passengers. We installed wide velor seats, comfortable headrests and armrests, and also added large space between the rows. Above each row there is a climate control control panel and an outlet for charging devices, as well as ventilation grilles and lighting lamps. All this will ensure maximum comfort for passengers on long trips. These are the options awaiting buyers in the basic kit:

  • central locking;
  • ABS, EBV, AFU;
  • electric heating and rear window wiper;
  • You can additionally order air conditioning;
  • front heater;
  • passenger airbag.

Pay attention to the restyling of Renault Megane 2022.

Specifications

At first it may seem that the technical characteristics of the Renault Traffic 2021 2022 are rather weak.
That’s what I thought at first, because the DCI turbocharged diesel engine produces 82-120 hp. pp., depending on the configuration, will be rather weak for a car whose load capacity is 1200 kg. But it was not so. Acceleration to 100 km/h is only 13.8 seconds. This is quite good for a van or minivan, because the torque of 190-240 Nm at 2000 rpm allows it to do this with ease. I was also very pleased with the low fuel consumption in the urban cycle - 7.4 liters per 100 km, and only 5.7 liters on the highway. The engine works in excellent tandem with a 6-speed gearbox, which in turn is characterized by smooth shifting. The ground clearance is 19 cm. Oddly enough for a car of this class, this ground clearance is perfect for operating the car on Russian roads.

The new generation Renault Traffic is equipped with disc brakes, whose braking distance at a speed of 100 km/h will be only 43 meters, which is beyond the capabilities of even some passenger cars. The fuel tank capacity is 90 liters. Now you can refuel once every 800 km. Long trips will not be interrupted by ridiculous stops for additional refueling. The manufacturer provides a 12-year warranty on the anti-corrosion coating, and a service life of 30 thousand or 2 years.

Here is a list of trim levels and technical specifications of the Renault Traffic 2021 2022. In total, 3 configuration options are offered for Russia, and this is for the Passenger version.

The price of the basic configuration in Russia for the new Renault Traffic 2021 version of the Fourgon version is 1 million 50 thousand rubles. The table shows that for the passenger model you will need to pay at least 1 million 370 thousand rubles. For anyone interested, I can provide you with prices quoted in Europe for comparison. There the cost varies around 16 thousand euros.

Minivan and van competitors

Volkswagen Transporter T5 is the best-selling car of the year in this segment. The spacious interior allows you to carry up to 9 adult passengers or carry a load weighing up to 1 ton. A 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine with a power of 102 hp was installed on this minivan. s., accelerating to 157 km/h. A 5-speed gearbox is also installed, and fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 7.3 liters.

The price of the base model is 1 million 857 000 rubles, which, in my opinion, is completely uncompetitive compared to Renault Trafic, but it is understandable, because here we have to pay for the brand and some features that cannot be found when working with Renault Trafic 2021- th.

Hyundai H1 was created by Korean designers specifically for corporate companies that care about comfortable driving over long distances. It can carry up to 8 people with luggage, and cargo vans can carry cargo weighing up to 1 ton. In this car we see an installed turbocharger engine with a volume of 2.5 liters and a power of 116 hp. s., while the torque is 343 Nm / 1750-2250 rpm. min.

A 5-speed gearbox is installed here, consumption in mixed mode is 8.3 liters per 100 km/h. You can buy this minivan for 1 million 364 000 rubles. The car has rear-wheel drive, which, in my opinion, makes driving in winter much more difficult, and since in some regions of Russia winter lasts almost six months, this will become a big problem when choosing a suitable minibus.

Test drive of the new Renault Trafic 3: aka Gosha, aka Goga, aka Zhora

In Europe, this model is one of the bestsellers in the class of commercial minibuses along with Transit and Transporter. The second generation Trafic, with minimal changes, was produced (and sold well) for almost 13 years! Yes, in Russia, due to general skepticism towards French cars, the preferences of distillers of the 90s, and later – weak advertising support for sales of Renault small commercial vehicles, we can say that this model is not known here. Well, it's time to correct this annoying circumstance. We have the latest third generation in our hands.

When creating the new Traffic, the developers were tasked with improving the car in all respects, while maintaining the advantages of its predecessor and avoiding a dramatic rise in price. But that's not all.

The company's management demanded a reduction in fuel consumption along with an increase in interior space and an expansion of the list of equipment. Personally, if I were the designers, I would ask them to draw a round square in response...

In the grass Grasshopper sat

From the outside, the new Traffic has not exactly changed, but it has changed a lot. Of course, it's not as impeccably stylish as the new Mercedes Vito. But Traffic is in a different class, and the price is incomparable. Now the Renault Trafic looks bigger and “bus-like” or something... Like its predecessor, the new product is available in different body styles - from a chassis with a cab to a long-wheelbase cargo-passenger or passenger version with 9 seats. The range of colors has expanded significantly, and bright shades have appeared. By the way, the light green color shown on our test sample is available at no additional cost. A matter of taste, of course, but in my opinion, the “acid” color suits Traffic very well. It’s more fun, and you’re better visible on the road.

What is inside?

The front doors are wide and heavy, the handles are massive and horizontal. Adjusting the height of the driver's seat cushion is already available in the base, but even in the lower position you sit on the same level as the owners of the new Nissan Patrol. The step here is definitely not superfluous - without it you would have to climb up. Good visibility is provided by large windows and huge side mirrors, which are divided into sections (the lower one is hemispherical). In rich trim levels, the central mirror may have an LCD screen, where the image from the rear view camera is displayed. Parking sensors are also available for Traffic. At least one of these obviously won't hurt, since the car is really long and bulky, and the rear door, divided into two parts, significantly impairs visibility to the rear. At the request of the client, the car can be equipped with proprietary multimedia with a navigation system. This is exactly the same MEDIA NAV as Renault passenger cars. But even a simple radio is equipped with a convenient steering column control panel and a connector for a flash drive. Another USB input is located at the top of the dashboard - you can charge your smartphone without having to turn off the music.

In general, the new Traffic may have almost all the same options as Logan, Sandero or Megane. If you want cruise control, no question. Keyless entry system - please. The Trafic can also be equipped with side airbags or a folding passenger seat that turns into a table. In general, only budget or common sense can limit the level of equipment. For a company car, it is unlikely that anyone will order a push-button start... Already in the initial configuration, the Renault Trafic 3 traditionally pleases with an abundance of all kinds of niches, shelves and compartments. At the top of the dashboard there are recesses for containers with drinks, be it a bottle of water or a cup of coffee. There is a retractable cup holder on the center console. There are also special slots for coins. In general, the cabin has 14 compartments with a total volume of 90 liters. These may include a 54-liter container under the passenger seat. Many people have a smaller aquarium at home...

A notable innovation is the instrument panel. The dashboard has an electronic speedometer, which, in my opinion, is more convenient than an analog dial. Reading speed requires minimal distraction from the road. Also on the panel there are hints about the optimal transition to a lower/higher gear. The developers have improved the ventilation system and the deflectors themselves. It would seem like a small thing, but not in a car like this. For the middle row there are air vents for the feet, and on top there is a separate airflow control panel. The “gallery” also has deflectors. And everything seems to be fine, but personally I would like at least some windows to have a ventilation function. Alas, in this case the windows are “dead”. In a version like ours, all rows of seats are designed for three. The sofas are quite wide and, traditionally for minibuses, almost flat. The second row allows one section to be tilted to allow entry/entry into the rear seats. It seemed to me that the back tilts a little - it’s not very convenient to climb onto the gallery. And in the cabin of the new Traffic, the ceiling somehow presses on your head. Maybe I’m being picky, but the predecessor seemed to have more space above the heads of passengers.

1 / 3

2 / 3

3 / 3

One thing the previous generation definitely didn't have was 1,800-litre cargo space. If you lay down the rear sofa, the volume will almost double - up to 3400 liters. When you need to transport a refrigerator or cabinet, just press the latches and dismantle the sofas. A question of five minutes. But one person will not be able to do this for only one reason - they are heavy, so two people need to pull them out. After dismantling we have a completely flat floor. The rear doors, which can be opened 90 or 180 degrees, make loading easier. There are special holes for seat belts so that when driving they do not hit the body panels and glass. Not new, but convenient and thoughtful.

How does he drive?

For Traffic, Renault offers a new generation of turbodiesel engines of the same volume - 1.6 liters. Unit power – from 90 hp. up to 140 hp (twin turbocharged). We have a 115-horsepower compromise version that develops a good 300 Nm. When fully loaded, this is unlikely to be enough to spare, but something else is more important. In such a car, it is much more important to look at the fuel consumption indicator. And here Traffic will definitely not disappoint: achieving 6.5 l/100 km with a combined cycle and an empty cabin is quite possible!

By the way, Trafic 3 has a “magic” ECO button, which, according to Renault, improves efficiency by 10%. This key “cuts off” the maximum torque bar. In theory. In practice, with or without it, 7-8 liters is the consumption when you drive as conveniently as possible, and not as needed to save fuel. In eco mode, acceleration is more sluggish, especially with the air conditioning on, so its use is not particularly justified, if not completely pointless, because you have to “turn” the engine more, which obviously does not contribute to savings. In short, it is advisable to turn on ECO mode when driving at a constant speed on the highway or in city traffic jams. I will also note that, according to subjective sensations, there is still not enough traction at the bottom. I would like to try double boost! But there was no top car in the press park. Regarding speed and noise in the cabin. There is no need to shout at each other at the front, even at a speed of 130 km/h. At the same time, fuel consumption in this case is not scary - about 8 liters. In terms of handling and driving performance, the new Trafic is not a passenger car, but it is obedient and understandable. Large strokes and good suspension settings allow you to feel comfortable on not the best roads. We are talking about those sitting in the front.

1 / 2

2 / 2

Those in the gallery will certainly ride with less comfort. There is no need to entertain yourself with illusions and believe dreamers - they say that when fully loaded, those sitting in the “gallery” will feel like they are in a Maybach. We tried it - it will still shake from behind. And this is normal for this class of cars. The traffic may be a family or corporate bus for passengers, but the “commercial veins” cannot be picked out with a finger. This is the specificity and design of the rear suspension. It may be spring-loaded, but it is designed primarily for increased loads. First gear, traditionally for such cars, is short. The sixth is purely for the track. The movements of the scenes and the clarity of inclusion no longer evoke hatred towards everything French, but, perhaps, they are still not standard. The Hill Start Assist anti-recoil system is clearly useful here, especially at first. Thanks to it, it is easy to get underway on Traffic, regardless of the degree of incline of the road. There is also ABS with brake force distribution and a “pre-braking” assistant. For an additional fee, the ESP stability control system and a trailer assist system are provided, which eliminates body sway.

What's the result?

In the commercial line of Renault at the moment, the niche of a junior van is empty - there is a Kangoo and a Master, but the Trafic is not for sale, because they have stopped supplying second-generation vehicles. The third, which we had the honor to present in our review, is promised to be released on the market in the summer. Will the balance of power change? Will Trafic become a bestseller? Hardly. Manufactured in France, which means it will be difficult to compete on price with the market giants. Ford has been selling the new Transit for almost a year, Volkswagen is preparing the release of the T6... So you can’t play on the novelty. But if you are suddenly looking for a car of this class, do not be lazy to go to a Renault showroom and try out the Trafic. Of course, commercial vehicles are not bought to stand out in the crowd. But if all other things are equal, then why not?
