How Fedor Lapshin drove new Scania tractors in Sweden

Special purpose modularity

The appearance of information about new versions of Scania 6th generation trucks with double cabs was expected at the end of the year. And indeed, in December, the first information about a new line of vehicles for environmentally friendly urban transportation appeared on the website, where in a group photograph of trucks with low cabs, a two-cab P series was also found.

No longer a test of strength

The Scania P-series, before the reincarnation of the L-series, was the smallest of the series of trucks, which was noticeable by the low landing of the cab. Such machines are designed for transporting goods over short distances, working on construction sites and in public utilities. The P-series chassis is well adapted for mounting special bodies and superstructures. The wide selection of power units makes the model range suitable for use in a variety of professions, but the model range still had some room for utilities, which the P-series was not able to fully satisfy.

In an effort to provide more options than consumers can handle, the L Series has been revived in 2018 with an ultra-low-slung cab for utility and retail applications. With these weapons, the company enters into a clinch with Mercedes-Benz Econic and Dennis Elite and, to the displeasure of competitors, expands not only the area, but also the geography of supplies to other countries.

With the introduction of the L series, the new P-series is freed from utility duties. Therefore, it is not surprising that it is positioned primarily for fire and rescue services. And if you consider how important this sector is for the entire big European seven and especially the Japanese manufacturers Isuzu, Mitsubishi Fuso and Hino, then the onslaught of the Swedes no longer seems like a test of strength.

Scania dump truck and its technical characteristics

Scania models meet the most stringent international quality standards. During the tests, it was found that the truck’s cabin is characterized by increased safety, which is extremely important in emergency situations. The interior of the dump truck deserves special mention, because in addition to the high functionality of the dashboard, it is distinguished by increased comfort, surpassing the indicators of domestic KamAZs and French Renaults.

The dump truck from Scania is characterized by increased rigidity of the body elements, which helps to avoid future deformation. The cabin and body are not thermally insulated, but some models have underbody heating. Scania trucks are equipped with standard equipment:

  • retractable awning;
  • holder that secures the spare wheel;
  • visor protecting the hydraulic cylinder.

The Scania model range is quite diverse. The models have engines of varying power - from 220 to 620 horsepower. Most models have a 12-speed transmission.

As an example, consider the technical characteristics of the P 380CB model:

Curb weight13 tons
total weight39,000 kg
body volume16 cubic meters
engine modelScania DC11
engine's typeturbodiesel
cylinder volume10,640 cubic centimeters
power indicator380 hp

Crew Newspeak

Whenever faced with unusual properties of a new product, marketers have to get out of it. It was thanks to them that biokefirs appeared, it was from them that we learned about the dangers of GMOs (although almost everything on the table consists of them). In the automotive industry, this is how the terms “crossover”, “minivan”, “UPV” appeared. Ambiguous newspeak even changed its meaning to the opposite. If hypercars and hypertrucks meant super-efficient cars in the early 1990s, now they have come to mean high-speed supercars and voracious mastodons for driving 100-ton road trains.

In the descriptive environment, mining dump trucks appeared in the 2010s, which, unlike mining and articulated ADT dump trucks, due to the standard width of 2.55 m, can operate on public roads without additional permits.

The term “crew cab”, introduced by the Scania marketing service, essentially purports to be jargon, since there are already established phrases in use: two-row, double, double cab - literally Crew Cab. But, apparently, I really wanted to consolidate the new concept, and it does not seem so unsuccessful, but an addition is required: the car is intended not only for fire and rescue services, it will also be used by the operational departments of emergency units.

The longest cabin module, CP31, designed for a CREW of 6-8 people, has a distance from the front wheel axle to the rear wall of the cabin of 1.97 m. The shorter 6-passenger version CP28 has a distance of 1.67 m, and it will fit perfectly for emergency, construction or utility brigades. So marketers can reserve the term “brigade cabin” for the future.

Set of standard solutions

Thanks to "crew cabs", the production time of a typical emergency vehicle has been reduced by approximately 30%. The cabins are prepared for the installation of electrical equipment and pneumatic lines: numerous mounting points and an upper row of holes on the vehicle frame are provided for bodybuilders.

The new Scania cabs are designed from scratch and comply with the Scania modularity principle and have the same set of equipment as other P series cabs. The dimensions do not deviate from the previous standard size, which will allow cost-effective installation of bodies and equipment that were installed on the previous P series.

In addition to the usual crash tests, the cabs have undergone a full range of impact and rollover tests using the ROPS/FOPS method and meet Swedish safety requirements.

The crew (or crew) compartment can be equipped with separate air conditioning and heating systems with manual or automatic control. Seating can be made in the form of separate seats or sofas.

Ergonomics also affected the exterior. The improved design of the footrests and contrasting handrails make entry into the cabin easier. On request, a Scania City Safe Window, an overhead air intake and various power take-offs can be factory installed in the lower part of the door.

Cabin features and comfort

The cabin of many Scania models is characterized by increased comfort, which is not typical for most large vehicles. The dashboard is made of black plastic and there is also an on-board computer. As for the steering wheel, you can see control keys on it, as well as pneumatic adjustment. The Scania cabin is different in that there are more compartments for various small things.

It is also worth noting that, depending on the model and configuration, there may be a berth in the cabin. There are cabins where this is not provided, but there are full seats for the driver and passenger with high backs, which are quite comfortable.

The dump truck from Scania successfully competes with many global manufacturers in this market segment. The cars are quite expensive, but this is quite an adequate price for the quality that is present in Swedish cars.

A car from Scania is a profitable solution for many large enterprises involved in construction, mining, etc.

Clarity and certainty

CP31 extended cabs will be available with two roof heights: low and standard.

Judging by the nameplates, the Scania P320 and Scania P360 with DC09 engines with 320 and 360 hp are ready. in combination with an Allison automatic transmission or Scania Opticruise automated system. However, Henrik Eng, urban product director for Scania's truck division, says the company is committed to installing the 13-litre DC13: in short time. When you consider that the vehicles equipped with these cabs have excellent safety features, excellent braking systems and engines with up to 500 hp, it is clear that they are ideal for first responders.”

What remains a secret for now is the premiere of the Crew Cab version with a 4x4 wheel arrangement, since it will have to use a high chassis. But there is already a clear certainty that versions with Crew Cabs will be produced in the 6 × 2 * 4 version with 3 trolley axles equipped with an electric drive.
