Review of ISUZU engines

The first SUVs from Isuzu appeared in 1985, with different engines under the hood. Some of them were weak, others, even though they were not made in Japan, were of high quality and reliability.

I would especially like to note three ISUZU diesel engines, since the production of diesel engines is one of the two main areas in which the company has achieved significant success. Isuzu diesel engines that have been and continue to be very popular to this day.

Isuzu Bighorn belongs to the first generation of cars, which was equipped with a 4-cylinder in-line diesel engine with a volume of 2.8L and a power of 110 hp. Its marking is 4JB1-T . With the same engine, the Isuzu Bighorn was sold in America under the name Trooper .

4JB1-T was replaced in 1991. to the modernized 4G-G2 , which was also a 4-cylinder diesel engine, but with a volume of 3.1 liters, powerful. 120hp. 4JB1-T continued to be produced, but for the three-door ISUZU Mu model.

These two engines are similar to each other and are distinguished by high quality and reliability. These engines were created using the most modern technical solutions at that time and differed in the volume of the combustion chambers, and therefore in power . Both internal combustion engines had aluminum cylinder heads with a single camshaft , an air-cooled turbocharger and belt-driven timing. Thanks to turbocharging, these engines were very torquey at low speeds . The turbines of these diesel engines differed in that they created low pressure at low speeds and this ensured long and uninterrupted operation. The design of these internal combustion engines did not provide for balancer shafts , and even despite this, they were not distinguished by strong noise and vibration .

4JB1-T and 4JG2 did not overheat, even despite long operation at high speeds. Compared to them, Toyota or Mitsubishi diesel engines were prone to overheating during constant operation at high speeds, when high diesel compression damages the valve bridges through which antifreeze escapes.

ISUZU engines have a huge service life ; you just need to monitor its technical condition: change the oil, filter, and timing belt in a timely manner.

However, as you know, everything breaks down and breakdowns often occur due to low quality diesel fuel , which entails replacing the injectors and flushing the fuel system. The turbocharger also fails , mainly due to premature shutdown of the ignition after stopping . This is unacceptable when operating these brands of diesel engines. Repairing a turbine is expensive, and replacing it with a new one is 2-3 times more expensive than repairing it. It is also worth noting that repair kits for 4JG2 are an order of magnitude more expensive than for 4JB 1.

Both engines have an excellent balance of power and reliability , but the cost of repairing ISUZU units and components is sometimes significantly higher than the cost of similar diesel engines from other manufacturers. All this is compensated by the high reliability of these units .

In 1998 The Isuzu company began producing in-line, 4-cylinder diesel engines of the 4JX1 brand , with a capacity of 159 hp. volume 3.0l. This engine had a torque of 330 Nm at 2000 rpm and was installed on the updated Bighorn .

Twin-camshaft, 16-valve 4JX1 , like its predecessors, was equipped with an intercooler and turbine .

The 4JX1 differed from its peers with a new common rail injection system , which provided a significant increase in power. The Common Rail injection system allows you to create high pressure in front of the injectors , which, in turn, ensures a finer atomization of the fuel, which means the combustion quality is significantly improved. This system is equipped with two pumps, the first of which allows you to create the required pressure of 80-90 bar. before starting, and when the engine starts, fuel flows to the second. The second pump is a combined pump, combining oil and fuel pumps and naturally has a more complex design. Creating a pressure of 300 bar. the mixture is pumped into the fuel rail, from where it is injected into the combustion chambers through injectors. Injection is carried out in two phases - heating of the combustion chambers and injection of the required dose of fuel.

4JX1 injectors are controlled by a processor, which performs injection in two phases: pre-heating of the chambers and injection of the “working” dose of fuel.

With Common Rail technology, engine power has increased significantly while emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere have been reduced . The 4JX1 became quieter and was almost no different from the gasoline version.

4JX1 requires only clean and high-quality oil , which is due to the Common Rail . We recommend oil of the DIESEL LEICHTLAUF 10W-40 HD category . This is an anti-friction oil that is designed to take into account the formation of increased carbon deposits in these diesel engines. It is recommended to change the oil frequently (preferably every 5 thousand km), even despite effective cleaning. This is due to the low quality of diesel fuel.

Common 4JX1 faults include:

  • incorrect timing belt installation,
  • overload in the injector solenoid control circuit due to contamination of the nozzle, which occurs when using low-quality fuel, as well as a malfunction of one of two sensors: the crankshaft position sensor, and the camshaft position sensor, or in the presence of a signal from the hydraulic oil pressure sensor,
  • Electronic injection control also causes some problems due to the fact that certain types of faults are not diagnosed by the scanner.

In general, the engine shows good performance, just like other diesel engines produced by Isuzu . It is quite powerful, consumes fuel moderately and fits into modern environmental standards . However, despite the above advantages. Engine operation in Ukraine is complicated by the low quality of diesel fuel and the high cost of some spare parts . Common Rail injection system allows the use of only expensive original components, which are extremely rarely found on the open market. For example, a high-pressure fuel pump can only be purchased assembled with an oil pump at a price of about one and a half thousand dollars, but you can order from our managers not only new, but also used ISUZU spare parts at reasonable prices.

CONTACT THE MANAGER

The ISUZU company is known not only for its cars and SUVs , but also for its reliable diesel engines for trucks. Up to 5 different diesel engines can be installed on the same ISUZU truck. As a rule, Isuzu diesel engines are not turbocharged, but this does not affect the power, which is increased due to volume. Thus, ISUZU ELF trucks have a 4HF1 engine, which has different volumes.

The four-cylinder 4HF1 has established itself as a powerful and highly reliable engine , the mileage of which reaches 1 million. km. Basically, these engines have a mechanical injection system, are easy to operate, and spare parts are always available. Since 1996, these engines began to be equipped with electronic Common Rail fuel injection pumps , which made it possible to significantly increase the power of the internal combustion engine, and since 1999, almost all 4HF1 Common Rail .

Good day, friends, I have this problem, I can’t figure it out ISUZU ELF Truck 2004 year 4JG2 fuel injection pump mechanical engine, The car does not go uphill and has a very high fuel consumption of about 100 km 20 liters but it starts on fire, we started with the simplest thing: changing the filter and cleaning it The car won’t use the mesh to no avail, then they advised me to install the fuel injection pump a little earlier, I loosened it and turned it a little earlier, somewhere in the middle and then a characteristic ringing of the injectors appeared! I fixed this position and driving on it became a little slower, but still something was missing, I left it in this position until the morning, I came to the parking lot, the car wouldn’t start, it felt like the battery had run out, zhu-zhu-zhu, I raised the cabin and put the pump in the late position as it was the diesel engine exploded at the shot, what does this mean, I don’t understand, please advise? I checked the gas distribution according to the marks!

Note:

Since 2016, it has been supplying only new engines and spare parts for the Isuzu 4JJ1 engine.

We also do not recommend installing the 4JJ1 engine from Isuzu Elf trucks on an excavator. Such a replacement, with a lot of design changes, can only be made for a short period of operation.

List of internal combustion engine modifications

The naturally-aspirated diesel engine 4HG1 from Isuzu has a Turbo modification 4HG1-T with the following characteristics:

  • power – 121 hp;
  • torque - 322 Nm;
  • compression ratio – 19;
  • environmental standards – Euro-2;
  • consumption in the urban cycle is about 20 liters.

The diesel engine is equipped with a Turbocharger 704136-0003 turbocharger with a GT3076R kit and an intercooler.

Advantages and disadvantages

The simple design of the internal combustion engine ensures driving dynamics at any speed. The motor is a “millionaire”, which is proven by real operating experience. Fuel and oil consumption is moderate, maintainability is high, including by the owner’s own efforts.

Hydraulic pushers are responsible for adjusting the thermal clearances of the valves, so the user does not need to go to the service technician after 30 thousand miles. Gear transmission is much more reliable than belt and chain and provides maximum valve safety.

On the other hand, after 70 - 80 thousand km, the hydraulic pushers begin to ring, and they need to be replaced. Diesel is sensitive to the quality of diesel fuel, in which in the Russian Federation the content of paraffin and sulfur is too high, which worsens the winter start-up and reduces the service life of the ShPG, accordingly.

Disadvantages and breakdowns in the G4HE and G4HG units

  1. Timing belt. Unfortunately, the factory did not install the best belts, and heavy loads on the assembly often resulted in rupture. It is better to replace it at 50,000 km.
  2. Timing drive. Also, on engines before 2009, drive malfunctions were noticed, which led to very expensive consequences for car owners.
  3. Candles. Ignition elements serve normally for 12-15 thousand km. Then it is better to replace them so that the bookmaker does not start bombarding you with various errors.
  4. Overheat. The cooling system is not the best for city use, and overheating of the engine will result in the need for complex and expensive repairs.

Owner reviews

In general, reviews about this engine are positive:

“I always fill up at the same gas station. Therefore, the engine has been serving faithfully for more than 400 thousand km. There were no special problems with him. I only replaced the 4hf1 thermostats.” Yakov Morda, Sakhalin

As for the negative points:

“One of the common malfunctions of this unit is rotation of the crankshaft liners. There are many reasons for this. I installed a contract one - although it is made in China, it has deservedly worked for 200 thousand km.” Andrey, Samara

Maintenance schedule 4HG1 4.6 l/121 l. With.

The official manual of the Japanese manufacturer Isuzu recommends servicing the 4HG1 engine within the following periods:

  • Do-it-yourself filling of new oil is carried out every 10,000 km;
  • Attachments should be checked annually;
  • The service life of the battery is set by the manufacturer of the battery, not the engine, usually 5 years;
  • factory experts advise changing antifreeze after 50,000 mileage;
  • It is recommended to throw away the fuel filter after 30,000 km, use a new air filter cartridge after 20,000 km;
  • the exhaust manifold of engines usually burns out after 70 thousand mileage;
  • the crankcase ventilation system needs to be cleaned after 30 thousand km;
  • Thermal valve clearances are adjusted annually or every 30,000 km.

The boosting of the diesel engine is the reason for the mandatory reduction of intervals between maintenance services by at least 30%. After increasing the power of the internal combustion engine, overhauls will be required more often.

Price

You can buy a motor for 250-300 thousand rubles. Below are a couple of suggestions from Droma:

  • original engine for Isuzu Elf, used contract condition, manufactured in 1997, piston, injection pump, injectors were inspected - price 244,000 rubles, pickup from the city of Irkutsk;
  • motor Isuzu Elf 4hf1, NKR66, 4HF1, manufactured in 1998, fuel injection pump 4hf1 beam, mileage 120 thousand km, sold complete with attachments and starter, generator 4hf1 - 260,000 rubles, pickup from Vladivostok or delivery to Russian cities (you have to pay delivery);
  • Isuzu ELF 4HF1 (not EFI), original used, without starter, flywheel and generator, excellent condition, no mileage in the Russian Federation - 240,000 rubles with delivery throughout Russia.

A contract diesel unit is an excellent solution for replacing a used engine. Buy a complete 4hf1 engine to avoid the cost of rebuilding the piston group and other related components.

Review of faults and methods for repairing them

Thanks to the gear drive, the 4HG1 motor never bends the valve, but has some characteristic malfunctions:

Heavy oil leak1) depressurization of the neck plug
2) destruction of the cylinder head cover seal
1) replacing the plug
2) replacing the valve cover gasket
Smooth but unreasonable decrease in lubrication level1) loosening the camshaft plug
2) the plug thread is broken

3) crankcase ventilation is clogged

4) development of the rear oil seal

5) weakening the oil filter

1) pulling bolts
2) replacing the plug

3) cleaning the crankcase ventilation

4) replacing the oil seal

5) replacing the gasket and tightening the filter with a special tool

Noise inside the timing belt1) wear of the roller or rocker arm
2) rod deformation

3) low lubrication level

1) replacing the shaft and rocker arm
3) adding engine oil

The power drive was originally created for harsh operating conditions, therefore, with a service life of one million hours, it is highly reliable and does not cause problems for the user.

Design Features

The 4HG1 naturally aspirated in-line diesel engine has the following architectural features:

  • cylinder block - cast iron with dry repairable liners made of alloy steel, frame housing, 5 crankshaft supports, steel vibration damper pan;
  • cylinder head - cast iron with increased valve diameter, cross-blow, aluminum cover, laminated steel gasket using advanced technology;
  • ShPG - the piston has a special shape for rapid heat dissipation, the pin is offset to reduce noise and torsional vibrations, axial type seals on the crankshaft;
  • mounted – high-resource, rationally distributed under the hood;
  • oil pump - partially built into the cylinder block, only the top cover is removable;
  • Timing – camshaft made of carbon steel, bearing surfaces are hardened by high-frequency current, timing gears and attachments are forged, installed with interference fit;
  • Fuel injection pump is a multi-row plunger with a timer.

Cylinder block 4HG1

Crankshaft 4HG1

The combustion chambers are undivided; liquid gaskets are used for the pump, oil cooler, crankshaft housing and crankcase.

An important feature of the 4HG1 diesel engine is the use of an intake manifold made of composite material with the inclusion of noise-absorbing rubber. The exhaust manifold is cast iron, the exhaust volumes are calculated and do not create back pressure.

The design of the diesel engine does not have complex components and parts; major repairs can be carried out both in the garage and in the field.

List of cars on which it was installed

The 4JX1 engine was installed on the following car models:

  • Honda Horizon;
  • Isuzu Wizard;
  • Isuzu Mu;
  • Isuzu Trooper;
  • Isuzu Bighom;
  • Opel Monterrey.
