During the production of the car, several types of engines were used. In 1998, ZMZ engines (402, 406.3 and 406) were installed on the car. Their characteristics differed only in the number of valves. A diesel version of the GAZ-5601 was also offered. In 2003, engineers carried out a modernization, after which a 140-horsepower injection power unit and a Gorky Automobile turbodiesel were used in production. In 2008, the device was supplemented with a Chrysler DOHC 2.4L power plant, which developed up to 137 horsepower. The diesel engine 5601 was replaced by 5602. In 2009, we came to the final version: gasoline UMZ-4216.10 and turbodiesel Cummis ISF 2.8L.
The latest generation engine has four cylinders. There are 2 valves per cylinder. In the case of the diesel version, there are 4 valves per cylinder. Working volume - 2.89 or 2.781 liters. Maximum power is 107 (at 4 thousand revolutions) or 120 (at 3.2 thousand revolutions) horsepower.
A version with all-wheel drive is also available, designed for rural areas where off-road conditions are common. The scheme of this option includes a single-lever transfer case. Power steering is also provided to improve handling. In some modifications, the driver can disable one axle.
The clutch includes one disc and is of the dry type. The drive is carried out by a hydraulic mechanism. The manual transmission has six stages: five forward and one rear.
The wishbones form the basis of the front independent suspension. The designers added anti-roll bars to its design. The rear dependent suspension is based on two longitudinal semi-elliptic springs.
When purchasing, you can choose additional functions, which include a multifunction steering wheel, air conditioning, electric windows and electrically adjustable side mirrors. Diesel variants come with cruise control.
The car's interior is comfortable, but simple. The driver has at his disposal a four-spoke steering wheel, a gear lever, and a dashboard with system indicators. Materials of medium quality are used for interior decoration; they last for many years. The seats are upholstered in fabric. Airbags are not provided; ABS is included as standard. There are two versions - with a low and high roof. This does not affect the cabin equipment in any way.
Characteristics and design of "Sable"
The GAZ-22171 car has the following characteristics:

Both carburetor and injection engines were installed as engines on the GAZ-22171. Carburetor engines are easier to maintain, but are characterized by high fuel consumption and a clear lack of power. Injection engines have lower fuel consumption and are much more powerful. In addition, diesel engines, which have the ideal combination of fuel consumption and power, are now in high demand. The maximum speed of the GAZ-22171 is 110-120 km/h, depending on the engine installed on the minibus.
The gearbox on the car is manual. The manufacturer claims the high reliability of this unit, but any car enthusiast familiar with GAZ gearboxes is unlikely to agree with this. These five-speed gearboxes often shift with great effort, often causing the gear to “knock out.” The car has a single-plate dry clutch.
As for safety, the brakes of the GAZ-22171 are the weak point of this car. Thanks to its lighter weight, the Sobol brakes better than the Gazelle, but still, the braking distance is very long. The hydraulic brake system consists of two circuits, has a vacuum booster and a pressure regulator. If the brake fluid level drops sharply, the indicator on the panel lights up.
Minivan GAZ-2217 Sobol/Barguzin
The GAZ-2217 Barguzin minivan is a modified version of the Sobol minibus (GAZ-22171). The model was named “Barguzin” in honor of the powerful Baikal wind. Gaz-2217 Barguzin is more comfortable compared to its predecessor. The car's interior is designed as a coupe and gives passengers an excellent opportunity to communicate during the trip, sitting facing each other in chairs equipped with armrests and headrests. In the middle of the GAZ-2217 Barguzin minivan there is a folding table with a lamp for lighting at night.
The Gaz 2217 Barguzin demonstrates good handling and stability at high speeds, thanks to its independent front suspension. There is also an all-wheel drive model GAZ-22177 Barguzin 4×4, designed for passenger transportation in difficult road conditions (for example, rural areas) and family holidays outside the city.
GAZ Group positions the GAZ-2217 Barguzin car as a full-size minivan with minimal possibilities for transforming the layout.
The main differences between Barguzin and Gazelle
It is believed that the Sobol is a more compact version of the Gazelle, and this is true. Although the Sobol is a car of a completely different class, the models have a lot in common - the same components and assemblies, appearance, interior and exterior elements. When comparing models, it is better to consider the main differences. And the main differences between Sobol are as follows:
- One wheel is installed on the rear axle (the Gazelle has a gable tire);
- Load capacity is approximately one and a half times less;
- The wheelbase is 140 mm shorter;
- Unlike springs, the Gazelle is equipped with a front spring suspension (4x2 version);

GAZ-27527 Sobol is a van with compact overall dimensions. The model is available in two main versions, namely cargo and cargo-passenger. The Gazelle platform was chosen as the basis for this car. But it was slightly changed, as a result of which the GAZ-27527 has a shorter length, weight, and also a lower maximum load capacity. It is worth noting that the GAZ-27527 is a modified version of the GAZ-2752. However, unlike the second one, it has all-wheel drive and a 4x4 wheel arrangement. By the way, the GAZ-2752 is the first car of the Soboley family, and it served as the basis for the creation of many different modifications.
GAZ-27527 has a sliding side door located on the right side and hinged rear doors. The volume of the cargo compartment in this car is 6.8 cubic meters, if we consider the version with a three-seater cabin, as well as 3.7 cubic meters for the 7-seater modification.
"Barguzin business"
“Sobol Barguzin”, unlike “Gazelle”, is more suitable for business trips or as a family car. To a large extent, comfort depends on the thoughtful interior decoration. The first significant “sores” make themselves felt 4-5 years after the start of operation and are hidden in the gearbox and transfer case, front axle and power steering hose. They appear after the first 40-50 thousand kilometers and occur in different orders. The first comprehensive diagnostics are recommended to be carried out after 90-100 thousand kilometers.

Advantages of Sobol/Barguzin cars
Among the advantages of the Barguzin GAZ-2217 car, we can highlight the low cost of spare parts (the machine’s maintainability), handling like a passenger car with a payload of almost a ton, and a spacious interior. If you have some simple skills, you can repair your car on your own.
Winter is not scary for the owner of the Sobol GAZ-22171: the car starts quite well in cold weather, warms up quickly, and two stoves provide the summer temperature in the cabin. The radiator grille can only be closed in severe frosts, when the thermometer drops below -30.
The car’s power is also pleasing; it can accelerate to 140 km/h without any problems.

Minibus GAZ-22171 Sobol
GAZ-22171 “Sobol” is a small minibus characterized by comfort and driving performance. The car is intended for family, office or tourist use.
The basic version of Gaz-22171 Sobol is equipped with 6 passenger seats and a table. The 10-seater version does not have a table, and the passenger seats are located in the direction of travel.
If compared with the Barguzin, the body of the GAZ 22171 is slightly higher. The level of comfort is comparable: GAZ-22171 is equipped with comfortable seats with headrests and armrests.
One of the main advantages of the minibus is that when developing the Gaz-22171 “Sobol”, specialists eliminated many of the design flaws of the GAZelle (GAZ-322132 / 3221). The developers completely redesigned the suspension and springs, thereby ensuring a smooth ride, like a fairly good passenger car. The interior of the Sobol minibus has become more spacious due to being equipped with a single rear wheel.
Modifications
"Sobol taxi" (GAZ-221703)
Volga cars have long been the basis of the taxi fleet of Russian cities, perhaps that is why, as part of the Russian Taxi project, a custom version of the GAZ-221703 “Sobol Taxi” was presented at the Gorky Automobile Plant, equipped with a 5-seater interior, decorated using plastic and easy-to-clean leatherette.
As on the Barguzin, the driver’s seat is separated from the passengers by a transparent partition. To the right of the driver there is space for luggage, and under the interior door there is a step with an anti-slip coating.
Due to the fact that the Barguzin served as the basis for the GAZ-221703, the car’s appearance becomes more “passenger-friendly”, thanks to the low roof and lifting rear door. However, the low interior of the car does not create discomfort for passengers, because even from the farthest passenger seat there are only a couple of steps to the door.
“Sobol Taxi” is equipped with an economical GAZ-5601 turbodiesel (with intercooler) with a power of 81 kW/110 hp. s.), which provides the dynamics of the car.
All-wheel drive passenger GAZ-22177 and 221717
There are also all-wheel drive passenger versions of Sobol and Barguzin. They carry the additional digit 7 in their indices.
The top version is considered to be 22177 in the “prestige” configuration - with a rotating side door, improved interior trim and sound insulation at the level of business class passenger models.

Despite the fact that 1994 was a rather difficult year economically, the first version of the GAZelle was released at the Gorky Automobile Plant, which later became a cult car. This car was a small-tonnage truck, which was clearly destined to become a legend in freight and passenger transportation.
It was GAZelle that took the place of the most successful car in the history of the Gorky Automobile Plant. In addition, this was the salvation of the brand from bankruptcy. For a long time, GAZelle was a symbol and the main product produced by the Nizhny Novgorod auto giant. Just looking at the fact that the first million copies were produced within 11 years, it becomes clear what a crazy demand there was for the car.
Gazelles have become an integral part of everyday life. Every day they can be found on the street: on passenger routes, transporting goods, or as emergency vehicles.
New life was breathed into the car in 2010. Changes were brewing, since by this time it was clear that the car needed to be urgently modernized. No matter how successful the fate of the previous model was, modern realities established increasingly stringent conditions and tasks. The old GAZelle was replaced by a completely new car with the prefix “Business”. At first they were equipped with UMZ 4216 engines, but later the Ulyanovsk Motor Plant switched to assembling EvoTech engines. In addition, such an important parameter as fuel consumption per 100 km was significantly revised.
Technical characteristics of GAZ 2217 1998-2003.
The first issue 2217 ran from 1998 to 2003. The minibus was produced in a 10-seater version mainly for minibuses and had a simpler configuration. The six-seater minivan has already acquired a richer finish - it is considered a commercial vehicle.
The minivan's interior is equipped with a folding table, and the middle row seats are located so that the occupants can communicate with each other. The seats are soft and comfortable - passengers should feel comfortable on long trips.
The only inconvenient thing is that the seats are rigidly tied to their places, and it is not possible to rearrange them at your discretion in the cabin.
"Sobol Barguzin" from the first releases could be either rear-wheel drive or with a 4x4 wheel arrangement. In the all-wheel drive version, the front axle is constantly engaged, the axles are driven through cardan shafts. Due to its sufficient comfort, “Barguzin” is often used for family trips outside the city to nature.
GAZ 2217 (1998-2003) has the following technical characteristics:

- The maximum permissible speed is up to 145 km/h;

- The front wheel suspension on the 4x2 version is spring, independent;
- Ground clearance – 150 mm for rear-wheel drive, 205 mm for all-wheel drive;
- The weight of a fully loaded vehicle is 2800 kg (minivan), 2650 kg (minibus with 10 seats).
First generation Sobol Barguzin cars have the following modifications:
- GAZ 2217 – minivan, six passenger seats;
- GAZ 22171 – minibus, ten passenger seats;
- GAZ 22177 – minivan with 4x4 wheel arrangement;
- GAZ 221717 is a minibus with all-wheel drive.
On the first generation of Barguzinov, only two types of engines were installed:
- Diesel engine GAZ 560 (under license from STEYR MOTORS) with a power of 110 hp. s., volume 2.1 l.
- Gasoline carburetor engine ZMZ 406 with a power of 110 hp. s., volume 2.3 l.

Models 2003-2010.
In 2003, Sobol Barguzin underwent major modernization. In addition to modified headlights and hood, interior improvements, the range of engines installed on the car has changed. The line added a turbocharged GAZ-5601 (95 hp) and an injection ZMZ 405.
After 2008, the GAZ 2217 model was supplemented with 2.4-liter Chrysler engines and the improved GAZ 5602; since 2009, the Ulyanovsk Motor Plant’s internal combustion engine (2.9 l) entered the series.
The side rear view mirrors have also changed - they have become more voluminous.

Disadvantages of Sobol/Barguzin cars
The main weak points of the car are: steering units, gearbox, suspension.
Having traveled only a few thousand kilometers, many owners of Sobol cars are already experiencing problems with the gearbox: they have to either rebuild it or change it. By the way, problems with gearboxes are among the most common among Sobol car owners.
After the first 10 thousand km. On some Barguzin GAZ-2217, the power steering hose bursts: as a result, the entire engine can be filled with oil.
As for the suspension on the Sobol minibus, in addition to its rigidity (it shakes even on the back seat), some owners of GAZ-22171 already after 40 thousand km. have problems with tie rod pins, ball joints and pendulums. Some car enthusiasts have to change ball joints almost every year.
After 90 thousand km. There is a drop in engine power in Barguzin GAZ-2217 cars.
Car enthusiasts also have complaints about the quality of design and assembly. Even the new Sobol minibuses have uneven gaps, and the side door cannot be adjusted. After a year of operation, extraneous squeaks appear in some places, which can be eliminated with the help of sealant; On some cars the rear trunk door begins to knock.
Another problem with Sobol/Barguzin model cars is the problem with antifreeze: car enthusiasts complain that it constantly leaks.
In order to clean the fuel pump mesh on a Sobol/Barguzin car, you must first remove the fuel tank, which is extremely inconvenient.
There is no towing eye at the back of the car, so if your GAZ-2217 is stuck, you can only pull it forward, which is an obvious flaw of the engineers.
Chassis, transmission, steering and braking system
As for the Barguzin chassis, it has the following technical characteristics:
- Gearbox – mechanical, five-speed, all gears are synchronized (except reverse speed);
- Transfer case (for models with all-wheel drive) – two gears, with gear ratios 1.07 and 1.86;
- Clutch – with one driven disc, hydraulic drive;
- The front suspension for models with rear-wheel drive is independent, double wishbone, for models with all-wheel drive – dependent, on leaf springs. All types of suspension are equipped with a stabilizer and hydraulic shock absorbers;
- The brake system is hydraulically driven, with two separate circuits for the front and rear wheels, with a pressure regulator and a vacuum booster.
There are discs on the front axle and drums on the rear axle. Hand brake on cables, cables go to the rear wheels; - Steering – worm shaft – ball nut type mechanism, gear ratio 16.6; with hydraulic power steering, the column is adjustable in angle and height;
- Rear suspension - leaf spring, with stabilizer and hydraulic shock absorbers;
- The main gear (rear axle) is hypoid type, gear ratio 4.556 for the 4x2 model, gear ratio 5.125 for the 4x4 model.
