The fuel intake module A31R32.1139010 or A31R32.1139020* with a fuel level indicator sensor is designed to take fuel and ensure control of its level in the fuel tank.

The fuel intake module is installed inside the fuel tank. The module consists of an intake chamber, a module cover with fittings and a connecting block, a fuel pre-filter and a fuel level indicator sensor, consisting of a float connected to a rheostat. Depending on the amount of fuel in the fuel tank, a current is supplied to the electromagnetic fuel level indicator (in the instrument cluster), which is determined by the resistance of the module’s rheostat.

When the reserve fuel remaining in the fuel tank is reached (less than 10 liters, rheostat resistance 230±10 Ohms), the reserve fuel remaining warning light turns on in the instrument cluster.

The fuel intake module must be replaced under the following conditions:

  • if, when the lever moves smoothly up and down, the fuel level sensor circuit breaks;
  • if the resistance when connected to the external electrical connector of the module at the upper (full tank) and lower (empty tank) levels does not meet the requirements (see table).

Installation and Operation Instructions.

Removal and installation of the fuel intake module must be carried out with the fuel tank removed from the vehicle.

When replacing a faulty fuel intake module, do the following:

  • After opening the package, inspect the module for damage to the housing and fitting tips, check the integrity and ease of movement of the fuel level sensor lever with the float.
  • Install the module into the car's fuel tank, first installing the O-ring. Rotate the module clamping ring using a tool with a torque of about 200 Nm (20 kgfm), ensuring the tightness of the fuel tank.

Before tightening the clamp ring, the alignment arrows on the fuel pickup module and the fuel tank must be aligned (pointing towards each other).

  • Connect the module to the fuel lines of the engine power supply system and the fuel line of the afterheater or pre-heater, heater* installed on the fuel tank, ensuring that the fuel supply line and fuel drain line are installed correctly and the connections are tight. Connect the tubes to the module until a characteristic click occurs. Secure the additional fuel intake pipe to the fuel tank with mounting bushings.

The connections of the fuel tank with the fuel intake module, fuel pipes and filler pipe must be sealed at an air pressure of 25-35 kPa (0.25-0.35 kgf/cm2) for 30 seconds in a bath of water. The appearance of air bubbles is not allowed. Check for leaks with the fuel pipes, filler pipe and valve with filter plugged.

  • Connect the fuel tank wiring harness connector to the fuel intake module.

Fuel supply system

General structure and operation

The battery-type fuel system is CommonRailSystem (CRS) with electronic fuel supply control manufactured by RobertBosch (Germany).

CRS BOSCH with electronic control unit provides:

  • precise dosage of cyclic fuel supply for each operating mode and multi-phase injection;
  • adjustment of fuel injection advance angles depending on rotation speed, load, temperature;
  • flexible regulation of fuel injection pressure over a wide range;
  • easy engine starting with minimal emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere under any temperature conditions;
  • adjustment of the fuel supply process depending on environmental conditions in order to reduce emissions of harmful substances;
  • compatibility with vehicle electronic systems and on-board monitoring and diagnostics system via CAN channel, provides diagnostics, performs the functions of speed limiting, emergency engine protection, cruise control and duplication of control from an additional body from the operator’s console.

Main components of the CommonRail fuel system

The fuel system operates as follows: fuel from the fuel tank, through a coarse fuel settling filter and a cooler of the electronic control unit 12, is sucked in by a gear fuel pump 6 and, under a pressure of 700...800 kPa (7...8 kgf/cm²), is supplied to the fine fuel filter 1 with very high degree of cleaning, since the CommonRail system is more sensitive to contamination than systems with a conventional plunger fuel pump. Next, the fuel is supplied to the high-pressure fuel pump 11, which has trisections, each of which is powered through a metering device with an electric valve. From the fuel pump, fuel under pressure enters the common fuel line - accumulator 9 (ramp) and then through an individual fuel line 8 is supplied to each injector 6. The injectors supply fuel under pressure to the combustion chamber. The injection duration is determined by the duration of the electrical pulse from the engine's electronic control unit.

The level of fuel pressure in the rail, optimal for a given engine operating mode, is set by the electronic control unit and is determined by the balance of fuel consumption through the injectors and the performance of the fuel pump.

In the CommonRail system, fuel injection pressure does not depend on the start time and duration of injection. This makes it possible, along with the main injection, on which the diesel torque depends, to carry out other injection phases:

  • pre-injection with a low flow rate, which mainly reduces combustion noise;
  • additional injection, allowing to reduce the level of exhaust gas emissions.

The actual amount of fuel supply is determined by the pressure and injection duration.

Sensors located on the engine transmit information about the operation of the systems to the electronic control unit.

The electronic control unit uses this information to control injection and send a signal about the operation of other systems to the instrument panel and control the actuators that ensure engine operation.

The electronic engine control system provides self-diagnosis of the operation of the control unit, sensors and some other vehicle devices. If abnormalities in engine operation are detected, a diagnostic lamp lights up in the vehicle cabin. In this case, you must contact a service station to determine the cause of the malfunction.

Fuel pre-filter

The fuel pre-filter for engines is a full-flow sediment filter.
