We repaired the cars more than we drove them, and by the end of the tests there were only two dump trucks left running.
And the idea to compare dump trucks was born when the Rusbusinessavto company decided to show journalists a MAZ with a body from the Avtomaster company from Naberezhnye Chelny (AR No. 13, 2011), and along with it the familiar MAZ-5516 with a MAZ body. And first of all, we raked out handfuls of bolts and nuts that remained in the cabins after assembly (the most impressive bolt was one and a half fingers thick!). When testing the Mazik nine years ago, we raked out washers and bolts from its cabin in the same way. Has nothing really changed since then?
Then they took the cars to the car wash and were unable to reverse the MAZ-5516. But since shortly before this we had tested a MAZ tractor (AR No. 5, 2011), we immediately guessed what was wrong: there was a missing nut on the gear shift rod, and the rod simply fell out of its socket. We found two suitable nuts, tightened them and drove off.
The next morning we drive the dump trucks to the house where the presentation will take place. And then, ten meters before the house, the unfortunate rod breaks off right at the nuts. What to do? Other journalists are about to arrive! I straddled the gearbox, squeezed the drive parts and shouted to Dima Silin, who was driving: “Shift through my hands!” The car was parked - and fellow journalists did not notice anything. They just wondered why they couldn’t ride on this dump truck.
And then, since the required part was not in the dealer’s warehouse, I had to look for a welder. But there was no time left for testing, and we returned both cars “due to a technical fault,” agreeing to try again. If only we knew what awaited us in the future!
Who is who
What if we add to these two dump trucks their classmates in the same price niche? Rusbusinessauto found a KAMAZ-6520, and the Moscow region company Spetsavtotekhnika provided the Chinese Shaanxi (now called Shacman). Let's tell you who is who.
The MAZ-5516 dump truck (now with the A5 prefix) is very familiar to both drivers and mechanics. The engine is the well-deserved YaMZ-238, only modernized, with the index 6582.10, the gearbox is also from Yaroslavl. But here’s what’s curious: despite the popularity of this model, it is not in the factory catalog or on the MAZ website! Only agricultural option and wood chip truck.
Why? Apparently, because the model is frankly outdated, and instead of it a more modern MAZ-6501 with a new type of cab is offered. But it is more expensive, and buyers still buy the familiar model.
MAZ with the Avtomaster body has the same design as the MAZ-5516A5, with the exception of the body: thanks to it, the car receives a new VIN and becomes formally Russian with the opportunity to participate in government tenders. The body itself is made in the form of a half-pipe (it is believed that in winter the rock freezes to it less, although the center of gravity increases), it is made more accurately than the Mazovsky one, equipped with Italian hydraulics and a pneumatic system for switching the exhaust “body-street”. Moreover, when the body is raised, the exhaust automatically switches to “street” (otherwise in winter a cloud of gases interferes with monitoring unloading).
But this system is poorly located, under the belly of the car (oh, the pneumatics will turn sour in winter!), and the rear underride guard is too low due to the presence of the hitch - for which we later paid.
KAMAZ-6520 is the model on which the plant is now relying. In the price list it is presented in 15 modifications! With bodies of different volumes (from 12 to 20 cubic meters) and sections (rectangular or “half-pipe”), KAMAZ or Madara drive axles from Hungary, with or without cabin restyling. There are even options that meet Euro 4 and Euro 5 standards. Moreover, all KAMAZ-6520 vehicles are equipped with a 16-speed ZF gearbox manufactured by KAMAZ.
We got version 6520-26014-63 - with restyling, four-point air suspension for the cabin (which other competitors did not have) and an engine. Is this a typo? Is common rail injection really necessary here? Exactly! Although the engine itself is a familiar KAMAZ-740, only meeting Euro 3 standards. And the body is welded clearly better than that of the MAZ-5516 and the “Chinese”.
Drawing conclusions
Even before the overload, we topped up the tanks “to the fullest” (at KAMAZ, which became real estate, this had to be done from cans), calculated the fuel consumption - and did not believe our eyes. We checked: no, everything is accurate, especially since our chief tester Gennady Borisov worked on fuel efficiency in the ZIL road testing department for many years.
So, with the same total weight and driving on asphalt at the same average speed, KAMAZ consumed 54.8 l/100 km, MAZ - 53.2 l/100 km, and the “Chinese” - only 40 l/100 km.

We don’t know how the machines will behave in future operation. But in these tests it was a clear victory for the “Chinese”. And a complete failure for MAZ and KAMAZ. Incredibly sad, but true: of all the four, the Shacman looks most like a normal car and is almost (except for the fuel tank cap) not broken. Of course, it can hardly be called a good dump truck - with “shoals” in quality, an oversized body, a tiny oil change interval “on bad roads”, disgusting gear shifting and the impossibility of inflating the inside of the tires without removing the outer ones.
In addition, the supply of Chinese dump trucks - under its own power from China, through third parties, in the absence of serious representative offices - can hardly be called civilized.
But the same can be said about the MAZ and KAMAZ dealer service, which delivers cars to customers in similar condition!

The MAZ-5516 itself is frankly outdated: it must be urgently discontinued, leaving the more modern MAZ-6501 on the assembly line, and with an imported gearbox: the Yaroslavl one, together with the clutch, does not stand up to criticism. There is also a problem with the assembly: as representatives of Rusbusinessauto say, “made by the hands of the automakers.”
And KAMAZ-6520... Five years ago, having become acquainted with the hooded KAMAZ (it never went into production due to its crude design and disgusting execution), we wrote: “We are not just offended, but unbearably ashamed for our dear KAMAZ.” We repeat the same thing now. You can't make trucks like that! What is the use of restyling, common rail injection and licensed components when we repaired a new car for two days, and on the third it died from something completely different?
At the same time, KAMAZ is the most expensive of the four (2 million 570 thousand rubles). The warranty on it is one year or 75 thousand kilometers. The demand for the model is excellent, but dealers complain that after the summer holidays, during which the plant went away, there are practically no KAMAZ-6520 dump trucks left for sale. And in September, the plant begins to fulfill military orders - and in connection with this, a strong shortage is expected.
But the shortage of MAZs has been eliminated: over the summer, Minsk produced 75-80 vehicles per day. Therefore, MAZ has fallen slightly in price: if the version with the Chelny body costs, as before, 2 million 300 rubles, then with the Minsk body it costs 2 million 240 thousand rubles. The warranty on MAZs is one year or 30 thousand km.
The three-axle Shacman costs 2 million 450 thousand rubles, the warranty is one and a half years or 65 thousand km.
