Design and principle of operation
Structurally, the kingpin is made in the form of a rod made of alloy steel. A flat is made on the body of the part to install a wedge that prevents shift in the axial direction. The diameter of the kingpin is 45 mm and the length is 232 mm. Installation is carried out “cold” using a hydraulic press.
The role of sliding bearings is performed by bronze bushings installed in the eyes of the steering knuckle. The part is lubricated with grease through the existing oiler and the hole in the bushing. The top and bottom of the lugs are covered with covers that protect the unit from dirt. The top one has a safety valve designed to release excess lubricant. To relieve the unit from axial forces, a roller support bearing is installed in the lower eye.

To make it easy to knock out the kingpin, you should heat the beam with a cutter. This procedure must occur quickly, otherwise the kingpin will heat up. Experts advise using liquid nitrogen in this case. The effect is the same, and the likelihood of damaging the beam is reduced to zero.
Sledgehammer
Replacing the kingpins on the KamAZ 6520, as on other models, can be done using a sledgehammer and an attachment of the required diameter. To do this, after removing the dustproof covers and wedge, a pointer is placed on the cut of the part and sharp blows are applied to it with a sledgehammer.
To make the procedure easier, you can heat the beam. Under the influence of high temperature, the eye of the beam will expand, and it will be easier to break through the king pin on the KamAZ.
REFERENCE: To prevent the rod from heating up along with the beam, heating must be carried out quickly. An oxy-fuel burner is well suited for these purposes.
How to change
The pins are replaced when play appears in the steering knuckle. At the same time, the car’s wheels behave unstably, and while driving, knocking noises are heard in the front beam. This work can be done at a car service center, but most drivers replace the part themselves.
To dismantle it is necessary to raise the cabin to its extreme position, remove the wheel and caliper. After this, the steering knuckle covers are removed. You can replace the kingpins using a special tool and a 50-ton hydraulic jack, but most often a sledgehammer and attachments are used.
How to knock out
Before removing the kingpin, you need to knock out the locking wedge. It is located in the body of the fist eye. After unscrewing the retaining nut and using the attachment, they try to move it from its place with sharp blows of a sledgehammer. If this is successful, then the part continues to be knocked out. Otherwise, a hole with a diameter of 8 mm is drilled in the wedge approximately 2/3 of the way. After this, it is removed by hitting it with a sledgehammer.
It will be easier to knock out the kingpin if you heat the beam with a cutter. This operation must be carried out quickly so that the kingpin itself does not heat up. Some specialists use liquid nitrogen to cool the part - the effect is the same, but the likelihood of damaging the beam is reduced.
Assembly
Experts recommend replacing the bushings along with the king pin. In most cases, they are included in the kit along with shims. They need to be installed so that the hole on the bushing coincides with the grease fitting, otherwise it will be impossible to lubricate the parts. To prevent the bushing from rotating and moving during seating of the king pin, it is seated using a reamer.
Before installation, apply a thin layer of grease to all parts. Adjusting washers are installed between the upper eye and the beam, and the gap between them should be no more than 0.2 mm. The support bearing is placed in a seat on the lower eye of the steering knuckle.
The kingpin is assembled using a hydraulic jack, but some people use a sledgehammer.
When seating it, you need to remember that the slot at the end of the part should be on top. After the king pin has taken its place, a locking wedge is installed. It is secured with a nut. Free play is selected by simultaneously tapping the wedge and tightening the fasteners.
In a correctly assembled assembly, there is no play between the parts, and a small force must be applied to turn the fist. During operation, the connection must be periodically lubricated - this will extend its service life and ensure the safety of the vehicle.
Installing needle bearings
Before you begin replacing the kingpin on a Kamaz vehicle, you need to study in detail the adjustment diagram for needle bearings, which is shown in the figure above. The washers are installed in such a way that they are between the fastening beam and the upper eye. In this case, the distance between them should not exceed 0.2 mm. The support needle bearings are secured in this position.

The washers are mounted between the beam and the upper eye so that the gap between them is no more than 0.2 mm. A support bearing is installed in the seat on the lower eye of the steering knuckle.
Remember - the slot at the end of the element should be located at the top. When the king pin is installed, a locking wedge is installed using a nut. The puller is made of two metal plates, rigidly connected to each other by metal rods. There is a hole in the top plate.
