Manipulator cranes are becoming increasingly popular when carrying out various loading and unloading, repair and construction work, as well as transporting goods. They are a self-propelled chassis based on an automobile or other special equipment with a loading platform on which a crane-manipulator mechanism is installed for lifting and lowering loads, as well as carrying out other types of work. Such special equipment includes the KAMAZ manipulator crane.
Kamaz trucks are distinguished by high cross-country ability in off-road conditions, large load capacity, reliability and ease of operation and repair, and versatility in use. In some cases, these vehicles are even superior to tracked vehicles in their maneuverability.
Types and features of crane installations based on Kamaz
Kamaz vehicles can be equipped with crane manipulators of various models of imported or domestic production. They come in two main typical designs:
- Hydraulic (hook) manipulators on which a load hook or other type of grip is attached to the end of a crane boom.
- Cable manipulators, in which the load-handling device is mounted on a cable suspension.
Depending on the specific purpose of the special equipment, the handling unit can be mounted on the vehicle in the front part of the cargo platform immediately behind the driver’s cab or behind the body on the rear of the frame. Such units are lightweight, small in size and fold compactly in transport position, allowing maximum use of body space for transporting goods.
The crane mechanism is driven from the main engine through the power take-off. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with hydraulically driven retractable supports, which increase the stability of the base chassis when operating the crane manipulator.
Instead of a conventional cargo hook, various interchangeable devices can be installed on the boom of the KAMAZ manipulator crane , including:
- hydraulic grabs for loading/unloading containers and other large cargo;
- grab grips for loading bulk and lump materials;
- load hooks for loading timber and other long cargo;
- hanging cradles to ensure high-rise repair and construction work;

Installation of CMU on KamAZ - main elements
To install the CMU on the vehicle frame, a specially made subframe is required. This is a requirement of truck and truck manufacturers. The design of the subframe ensures uniform distribution of the load along the entire length of the frame when performing loading and unloading operations. The width of the subframe must exceed the width of the vehicle frame by at least one meter.
Overframes for KamAZ are available in two modifications: short, intended only for mounting a manipulator, and long, intended for mounting a crane-manipulator and platform.
The manipulator hydraulic system operates from a special pump connected to the power take-off. Equipping a CMU machine involves modifying the platform. The crane takes up some space on the frame, therefore, the platform mounting must be moved to another place. According to the traffic police requirements, the length of the platform should not exceed the length of the frame by more than one meter, so sometimes it needs to be shortened.

The crane manipulator based on KamAZ 65117 is equipped with two types of installations - hook and cable. The first ones are produced by Palfinger, Fassi and Hiab. The hooks of such devices are attached directly to the head of the lifting boom. When folded, the crane is located directly behind the cabin and does not interfere with movement and transportation of large cargo.
KamAZ 65117 vehicles with a cable-type manipulator crane are equipped with installations manufactured by Kanglim, Dong Yang, Hiab (models 160T, 190T), Unic, Daehan, Soosan. A special feature of these designs is the fastening of the hook to a cable suspension, which allows you to work with loads that are slightly below the zero level. They can also be equipped with cradles and baskets for lifting workers.
An onboard KamAZ 65117 with a Palfinger manipulator crane can transport loads of up to 14 tons. It is equipped with a PALFINGER RK 15500 crane installation with a lifting capacity of up to 480 kg with a maximum boom reach of 15 meters. By special order, the boom can be extended to 18.7 meters with a slight reduction in lifting capacity. The lift's load moment is 18 tm. The boom can rotate 420°. The manipulator crane is equipped with emergency protection systems, including turning off the manipulator and blocking the control levers in case of overload.
OPERATING FEATURES
Many manipulators with different characteristics are installed on the KamAZ chassis. For example, the SOOSAN SCS736LII manipulator is equipped with bottom controls. Its load capacity is 350 kg with a boom reach of almost 19 meters. At a minimum reach of 2 meters, it can lift up to 7 tons of cargo. This allows the use of a crane manipulator based on KamAZ 65117 in small construction and cargo sites or on city streets.
The Korean cable CMU Kanglim KS 1256G-2 has a load capacity of up to 7000 kg with a maximum lifting height of up to 22 meters. At maximum reach, it confidently handles loads up to 300 kg, which makes it indispensable for high-altitude work and supplying cargo to the upper floors directly from the truck platform, without intermediate storage.
