Gear ratios
The gear ratio is the ratio of the number of teeth on the driven gear to the number of teeth on the drive gear.
Gear ratio | Number of teeth |
4.98 | 46/16 |
5.43 | 47/15 |
5.94 | 48/14 |
6.53 | 49/13 |
7.22 | 50/12 |
Example: the numbers 4.98 indicate 46/16 teeth, where 46 is the number of teeth of the driven gear, and 16 is the number of teeth of the drive gear of the gearbox.
It is very important that the gearboxes of all axles on the car have the same gear ratio. For example, if the middle axle gearbox has a gear ratio of 6.53 (49/13 teeth), then the rear and front axle gearboxes must have the same gear ratios and the same number of teeth, otherwise failure is inevitable.
Very often the question arises: which gear ratio is better and which, on the contrary, is worse for a particular car? It is very difficult to give a definite answer here.
Initially, KAMAZ plant engineers select the most optimal gear ratio directly for each model and for the operating conditions of the vehicle. It is clear that the KAMAZ 5410, 65116, 54115 highway tractor and the KAMAZ 55111, 65115 mining dump truck will operate at different speed limits.
It is for this purpose that lower gear ratios, such as 7.22 (50/12) or 6.53 (49/13), are installed on cars that operate at low speeds for most of their lives. And on vehicles for which it is important to have a good driving speed (truck tractors, flatbed highway vehicles), gearboxes with an increased gear ratio of 5.94 (48/14), 5.43 (47/15) or 4.98 (46/16) are installed.
However, depending on the individual operating conditions of a particular vehicle, the gear ratio on the gearboxes can be changed. For example, the 5410 and 65116 truck tractors can be used as a dump truck with a tipper semi-trailer, or, conversely, the 55111 and 65115 dump trucks can operate over long distances and spend most of their time on the highway.
Marking of KAMAZ gearboxes
The gearbox has an information platform where data is entered. The following symbols are located on the information platform of the gearbox:
- Serial number
- Date of manufacture
- Gear ratio
The gear ratio is marked separately from the serial number and date of manufacture, and it is also encrypted inside the catalog number.
The catalog number is not applied to the gearbox.
The gearbox serial number is a set of numbers and is simply a production numeric designation. For example, it looks like this: 000137
The gear ratio is indicated on the gearbox without a dot: 722

Description
Gearbox for the middle axle of a KAMAZ vehicle with 50 teeth. The gear ratio is 7.22, corresponding to a cylindrical pair of 50 by 12 (the large cylinder has 50 teeth, and the small one has 12), as indicated by the last digit of the article -20.
Main parameters:
- Full article number - 4310-2502010-20, the unit is purchased for vehicles with 6x6 wheels, these are KAMAZ 4310, 43101;
- Square flange, 4 holes;
- Holes for the axle shaft - 16 splines;
- No MOD, pass-through;
50 teeth - for full traction in KAMAZ 6x6 all-terrain vehicles with all-wheel drive, operating in constant off-road conditions. Movement speed is significantly limited, which is compensated by maneuverability. As the number increases, the thrust increases, and as the number decreases, the speed increases.
The medium gearbox KAMAZ 4310-2502010-20 is used on vehicles with an environmental class:
An alternative designation is the final drive of the middle axle.
Repairing a gearbox on your own is expensive, and not every service can correctly adjust the tension and engagement. In our certified center you can buy a new one or repair an old one, with a guarantee of 6 to 12 months.
What is it needed for?
The final drive is designed to regulate and transmit the speed of the crankshaft to the truck wheels, so this truck distribution unit often fails.

installing the middle axle gearbox from KamAZ 5320 to ZIL-131
Actually, this idea came to me. Set the center differential to 131. Has anyone done this? Will the gearbox fit into the Zilov “stocking”? Will the axle shafts fit?

Re: install the middle axle gearbox from Kamaz 5320 on ZIL-131
What for? It’s unlikely that it will work, and in general, the middle axles of Kamaz, I don’t know how they are now, but before they fell apart more than the rear axles (I mean the gearbox) Why is Kamazovsky better? There's probably a different gear there too.

Re: install the middle axle gearbox from Kamaz 5320 on ZIL-131
I'm not saying it's better or worse. I just noticed that the tire wear on a KamAZ is uniform, but on a Zila it turns out exponentially. That is, while the tires on all 4 wheels are new, the wear is minimal, since the circumference of all wheels is the same, as soon as visible wear appears, then the rubber falls apart before our eyes. Moreover, I noticed that this happens with both diagonal and radial. gear ratios are similar.

Re: install the middle axle gearbox from Kamaz 5320 on ZIL-131
Well, there should still be a center differential (on Zila), maybe the reason is different. On my 66, fully loaded, the self-locking mechanism in the rear axle was triggered, it clicked so much that the car was already jumping, I changed it, although everything seemed to work fine, I changed it to another one and everything disappeared. The tires may also be like that... the composition is crap or the leftist manufacturer is driving it. For 20 inches, you can choose something else, like for 66, there are 18-inch tires, so there is nothing except agricultural tires, not even from Western manufacturers. Well, one more thing, what about the planned rearrangement of wheels? By the way, it is prescribed by the car plant.

I wonder if anyone plans to swap wheels?

Re: install the middle axle gearbox from Kamaz 5320 on ZIL-131
Well, you will be the first. But seriously, in Soviet times you would have been bullied and your salary cut off for such a question, if the organization was more or less normal - where there was a small fleet of vehicles. For example, because the pressure in the tires was below normal, they cut off my salary. There was a specialist in the organization who monitored tires, wear and other matters, and could selectively check the pressure; the wheels had to go through so many thousand before being written off. By the way, a nurse came in the morning and took my blood pressure before leaving, so that after a hangover they wouldn’t get behind the wheel. So look at the manual for the ZIL 131, it says which wheels should be moved where and after what mileage. And don’t forget about the pressure, otherwise, like me, I only check it when the wheel is already empty.

ICD (inter-wheel lock)
The ICD is located on the cross-axle differential. When the locking is turned on, the torque is distributed equally to both wheels, which allows, for example, to drive the car off-road or in icy conditions. If the driver suddenly forgets to turn off the lock, this can lead to gearbox failure on dry asphalt when turning.
Today, many KAMAZ vehicles can be equipped with inter-wheel locking of the middle or rear axle; for this purpose, a special clutch is installed on one of the inter-axle differential cups. On KAMAZ front axle gearboxes, inter-wheel locking is not used.
