The crane manipulator KMU Z-shaped and cable L configuration consists of the following main elements:
- frame (base) of the KMU with outriggers; — rotary column (tower) with a rotary mechanism gearbox; — boom type L (one elbow, retractable sections) or type Z (folding, 2-3 elbows, retractable sections, sliders); — hydraulic cylinders for extending and lifting the boom; — built-in hydraulic motor-reducer of a cargo winch for an L-type boom; — hydraulic motor-reducer for the column rotating mechanism; — a slewing support device or a slewing bearing (turntable) is installed between the frame and the column; — a rotary cylinder for a Z-shaped manipulator with a rack and pinion mechanism (rack) for turning the tower; — front outriggers of the manipulator crane and additional rear hydraulic outriggers with hydraulic cylinders; — the power take-off (PTO) installed on the engine of the base chassis of the vehicle drives a hydraulic pump that provides the necessary pressure in the hydraulic system of the manipulator crane and the oil flow necessary for the operation of the hydraulic motors of the winch drive, turret rotation gearbox and hydraulic cylinders.

Model range of CMUs from foreign manufacturers

CMU Hiab

During the period under review, Cargotec presented a range of new models of Hiab-brand hydraulic hydraulic units. One of the main new products of the company is the Hiab XS 622 crane installation.


It features state-of-the-art technology including an improved boom extension system, hydraulic cylinder fittings and seals, an updated HiPro control system and a variable displacement pump.

The main advantages of the Hiab XS 622 loader crane among cranes with the same load moment are its long reach, high precision and smooth operation.

New technical solutions have made the boom extension system more stable. In this model, the design of all sequential cylinders is improved in order to prevent any sudden movements when retracting or extending the boom. A new type of support plate is installed on each boom section.

Thanks to the jib, the Hiab 150 X crane can move loads to points that would otherwise be inaccessible to cranes of this size.

In the maximum configuration, the boom reach of the CMU reaches 32 m. The jib rises upward at an angle of 25 degrees, thereby providing additional maneuverability.

Laying roof coverings and installation work are examples where high precision and long reach are especially important. On the Hiab CMU of this model, thanks to new fittings and seals of the hydraulic cylinders, as well as an optimally selected diameter of the hydraulic valve, which minimizes the possibility of overheating of the hydraulic distributor, any risks of leakage are reduced, and its service life is also extended.

The E-traverse system and the HiPro control system, which automatically provide additional power to the crane system when handling heavy loads, are included as standard.

Among the heavy series loader cranes, new products for the Russian market are the Hiab XS 855 HiPro and Hiab XS 1055 Hipro models with a load moment of 70.4 and 81.1 tm, respectively.


Hiab heavy series crane manipulators are equipped with the most advanced control system, which offers high speed, accuracy and smoothness when working with heavy loads at long reach, as well as safety.

This is achieved by the combination of the CombiDrive2 remote control system, the SPACE 5000 intelligent system and the V91 distributor.

The Power Flow Distribution (PFD) system improves productivity by ensuring smooth control of the crane at all times.

The V91 valve provides load control and pressure compensation, improving both the speed and accuracy of the CMU. Control of the crane does not depend on how far the boom is extended or how limited the working space is.

The lightweight series of Hiab hydraulic manipulators includes three new models - Hiab XS 022, Hiab XS 033 and Hiab XS 044 with a load moment of 2.5; 3.1 and 3.7 tm, respectively.

These compact and versatile cranes are based on the modular XS system and are characterized by precision and smooth handling of loads.

Palfinger loader cranes

Over the past two years, Palfinger has mastered the production of more than one and a half dozen new CMU models. We will dwell on some of them in more detail.

The Palfinger PK 19502 crane model with a load moment of 18.8 tm is characterized by small transport dimensions combined with a low center of gravity. At the same time, this model has a large outrigger width.


The PK 20001 installation with a load moment of 20 tm is a version of the Palfinger KMU series with a single-lever boom system. Such loader cranes are the most economical models for installation on base chassis for all applications of lifting mechanisms.

Another new product with a single-lever system is the Palfinger PK 23001 EH hydraulic manipulator model with a load moment of 22.2 tm. The PK 20001 K model with a load moment of 20.2 tm is designed for pallet handling.

Large lifting capacity at shorter reach and excellent height characteristics make this model a separate segment of cranes.

The boom design allows you to work at a length of 12.5 m with pallets of building materials and have additional advantages when performing this type of work.

A high level of savings during the operation of the Palfinger PK 20001 K crane is achieved thanks to the lubrication-free boom telescoping system, the system for using return oil and the optimized design of the manipulator crane.

The Palfinger PK 22002-EH crane model with a load moment of 20.9 tm, equipped with a double telescopic stabilization system, is optimally suited for installation on a dump truck chassis.

One of the important advantages of the next Palfinger crane model - PK 23002 SH with a load moment of 21.9 tm - is a system with an infinite column rotation angle.

In 2010, the RM company completely updated the small and medium line of CMU manipulators and completed the formation of new groups according to functionality.

According to this manufacturer, the most popular on the Russian market are small and medium-sized classic models of Palfinger CMUs without complex electronic control systems.


The two most relevant groups of cranes for Russia - Classic and Classic Plus (differing mainly in controls - with and without radio) are produced in special Russian configurations.

For example, units of the Classic Plus group are offered with radio control and a system for increasing the load capacity at a cost increase of only 15% compared to manually controlled CMU manipulators of the Classic group.

The main design features of the new crane installations are the use of cast parts in the base, a new boom design, a new improved electrical part, higher-strength steel in the boom structure and a centralized lubrication system for friction units.

The system of centralized lubrication of friction units and the rotation mechanism in a lubricant bath using liquid lubricants, as well as the new design of booms made of higher strength steels, are borrowed from more highly functional groups of CMU.

The new series of Palfinger cranes begin to surpass the old series in weight, having the same lifting capacity and, in addition, longer booms without the use of jib arms. Thanks to these innovations, the completely new series 16 to 23P are offered with extra-long booms, up to 7 sections, which is rare for simple cranes.

The main competitive advantage of the RM company's CMU is its electro-hydraulic safety systems, which allow operation in difficult climatic conditions with large temperature differences and at very low ambient temperatures.

KMU Effer

The modernized Effer cranes have introduced many technical solutions aimed at increasing their technical level. The standard package includes a Danfos hydraulic distributor, this allows you to connect various equipment (supports, attachments) without installing an additional hydraulic distributor.

The Effer CMU contains a mechanism for facilitating the retraction of the outrigger beam during manual extension/retraction due to a spring-loaded device. The boom design incorporates the HSS system - a system for increasing the speed of cylinder extension.


Effer specialists have developed a technology for symmetrically positioning the cylinders above the boom, as a result of which the desired height and exact unloading location are achieved, especially when working with a jib or winch.

The developed PRO.DEC progressive braking system allows for automatic balanced braking. The use of bronze bushings on Effer CMU booms reduces backlash to a minimum.

Increasing the strength of the boom structure while reducing its weight is achieved by using ten-sided boom sections. In turn, the Wind/Drive system allows the joint operation of the jib and winch without removing them when folding the boom.

The Scanreco radio remote control is easy to use. Radio control parameters are displayed on a wide display; all operating characteristics of the Effer crane installation are simultaneously indicated on the screen.

Most models come with a remote control as standard. Reduced support contours make it possible to operate a vehicle equipped with an Effer hydraulic manipulator in cramped conditions.

Amco Veba handling units

Amco Veba has modernized the 700 series CMU, as a result of which the manufacturer’s line has been supplemented with compact units designated “100 series”.

The new series is distinguished by more compact overall dimensions, as a result of which the Amco Veba crane installation takes up minimal space on the vehicle frame (the oil tank is also installed on the frame).

In addition, installations with a load moment of less than 4 tm do not require registration with Rostechnadzor.

The reliability of the Amco Veba crane design is confirmed by the absence of electrical components, fewer hydraulic components, the use of profile pipes, and a reduction in the number of welded joints.

CMU Tadano

In the modernized Tadano 500 series cable cranes, much attention is paid to increasing safety during loading and unloading operations.


Thus, a system has been introduced to automatically reduce the load capacity depending on the outreach of the supports, which prevents the vehicle from tipping over.

There is a function for limiting the lifting height when working with a load.

Boom position sensors are located inside the boom, which prevents mechanical damage.

The presence of the “turtle stroke” mode ensures slow and smooth operation of the crane, regardless of the force applied to the control lever.

Furukawa Unic cranes

The company Furukawa Unic Corporation, which produces cable-type CMUs, has updated its model range.

The updates affected installations with a maximum lifting capacity of 6 and 8 tons.


The cranes of the KMU Unique UR-600 series were replaced with the URV-630 series, and the UR-800E series with URV-800.

Furukawa Unic CMUs of the new model range have received greater lifting capacity at maximum working radii.

At the same time, the updated models have become lighter, which, in turn, increases the payload capacity of a vehicle equipped with a crane installation.

Soosan hydraulic manipulators

On the modernized Soosan cable manipulator cranes, increased wear resistance of the slewing bearing has been achieved, which is ensured by special heat treatment.


The extra-wide outriggers of Soosan hydraulic manipulators allow for stable work on uneven and inclined surfaces.

An automatic acceleration system has been introduced into the design of crane installations.

Speed ​​can be controlled from idle to full throttle without using the acceleration lever.

This will reduce fuel consumption and provide increased performance.

The efficiency of the Soosan CMU hydraulic system has been improved by separating the lines, which reduces losses in oil pressure and prevents heating of the oil in the system.

By shutting off the hydraulic drive to the outriggers while the crane is operating, the bypass valve prevents accidents caused by negligence.

Comparison of folding and cable crane systems

Many consumers, when choosing a CMU, are faced with the question of which installation to choose - folding or cable? In turn, many manufacturers of loader cranes present the concept of their own equipment as the only correct one. Where is the truth?

Probably somewhere in the middle. Moreover, hydraulic manipulators with a flexible or rigid load-handling member perform different functions, so it is not entirely correct to compare them with each other.

Therefore, in order to help the consumer make a choice, we present arguments from manufacturers of loader cranes for the two mentioned concepts.

Each of the two types of CMU manipulators - folding and telescopic cable - has its own advantages. The buyer chooses a crane installation based on the tasks facing him. So, if the load is most often below ground level, then the choice should fall on cable manipulators.

If, however, the load is above ground level, then a hydraulic manipulator with a rigid load-handling element will most fully satisfy you. To perform work with a crane with a rigid load grip, it is necessary to use an additional option such as a winch.

Advantages of folding CMUs:

– folding crane units are much more compact during transportation, the free space of the onboard platform allows it to be used for various cargoes;

– trifold cranes make it possible to use attachments that speed up the unloading process (grabs, forks, drilling equipment, etc.);

– moving cargo indoors at a high altitude (for example, through the window of a building under construction), additional maneuverability in the horizontal plane at high altitude is provided by a jib mounted on a crane unit;

– the folding boom also allows you to load large items.

Advantages of cable-type CMUs:

– the load is lowered to the surface with minimal error, since the operator can rotate the load in space, it is easier for the operator to control the hydraulic manipulator and control the lowering process by pulling the cable;

– smooth lowering of the load, reduced risk of impact;

– the load is lowered clearly in a vertical straight line;

– cable cranes allow not only to work with loads below ground level (ditches, wells, quarries), but also to lift/lower loads from behind a high fence, behind a wall, etc.
