The MAZ 256 bus (MAZ 256100, MAZ 256170, MAZ 256200, MAZ 256270) of the middle class is designed for intercity and intracity passenger transportation. Number of passenger doors: 2. Bus MAZ-256 - can be produced in the following versions: - tourist bus, equipped with air conditioning, audio and video systems; — for suburban intercity passenger transportation; - as a service bus; - as a minibus. Interior equipment is possible upon special orders.

The MAZ bus of various modifications is designed and assembled at the Minsk automobile plant, and delivered for operation in countries around the world. The manufacturer produces passenger vehicles that are suitable for traveling within the city, in the suburbs and between remote settlements. The equipment is easy to maintain, repairable, affordable, comfortable, and safe.
The lineup
The production of buses for passenger transportation at the Minsk plant has been carried out since 1992. The first vehicles were produced according to the developments of the Neoplan brand (Germany), however, to adapt to local conditions, the automobile enterprise began to use the developments of the plant’s design bureau. The technical characteristics of the models differ in capacity, power, design solutions, and purpose.
The company has developed a wide range of models for:
- transportation within the city;
- commuter service;
- intercity travel;
- universal use (MAZ-231);
- movement of travelers between the airport building and the runway (apron bus), etc.
Modifications of service and tourist buses have been developed by AMAZ, which can be equipped at customer’s request with lighting above the seats, a compact kitchen, a refrigerator, etc.
MAZ-101
Model 101 is designed for an urban environment, has a spacious interior, and was produced in 1992-1996. The equipment is low-floor, can accommodate up to 100 passengers, 24 seats are designed. The engines in the bus are installed from enterprises in Minsk, Yaroslavl and the Renault brand.
The prototype of the MAZ-101 is the Neoplan-4014 city bus (Germany). However, testing revealed insufficient adaptation to local road conditions and a design that was not designed for overloads.
In the improved version, the developers replaced the units, node connections, motor mechanisms, suspensions and control system with domestic components.
Ground clearance has been increased. The layout of the bus, interior layout, instrument panel design, and overhang configuration have changed. Pneumatic opening mechanisms were installed on the doors. The weight of the equipment reaches 18 tons, the machine reaches speeds of up to 70 km/h.
MAZ-104
Bus 104 was produced in 1997-2007. The vehicle is optimal for city trips. The cabin floor level is 70 mm higher than that of the MAZ-103, so additional steps are installed in the side entrance doors. The model is designed to move on roads with surfaces of varying complexity (gravel, stones, etc.).
The equipment was equipped with diesel engines in accordance with European standards (YaMZ-236, MMZ D-260.5). The motor is located in the rear overhang. The number of seats varies from 24 to 40 pieces. The salon can accommodate up to 100 citizens.
Based on the standard model of the MAZ-104 bus, a series of design solutions have been developed:
- 104,000 is intended for the city, has an MMZ D-260.5 engine;

- 104.X25 is a northern version, equipped with triple glazed windows, the exhaust system is located on the roof.
MAZ-107
Bus 107 was designed in 2001 and is still produced at the Minsk plant. The peculiarity of the machine is that it has 3 axles, the length of the machine reaches 15 m. Various modifications of the equipment have been designed, differing in the types of gearboxes, motors, etc. The models are characterized by high fire safety indicators, ensured by the spraying of metal elements.
Options for completing the MAZ-107 bus are offered according to customer requests. The equipment is equipped with engines from Germany (Mercedes-Benz, MAN) or Belarusian production, a standard mechanical or automated transmission. There are options for interior layouts and the number of seats. There are 25 to 51 seats for passengers, the capacity is 115-150 people.
Upon request it is possible to install:
- double-glazed windows with tinting;
- additional air conditioning system;
- electronic route signs;
- autoinformer in the cabin;
- kneeling system, providing the ability to tilt the cabin, etc.
MAZ-152
The MAZ-152 bus is designed for long-distance travel. Produced in 1999-2014. The large-sized model reaches 12 m in length and weighs 18,000 kg. The equipment reaches speeds of up to 120 km/h.
The cabin is designed with 43 soft seats, and a system for adjusting the degree of inclination of the backrest and footrest is provided. The seats can be moved laterally.
Vehicles can be equipped with engine systems of Euro-2 and Euro-3 standards of Belarusian or imported origin.
Based on the classic model, an improved MAZ-152A was created. The bus is designed for excursions and travel. By reducing the number of seats to 39, the bus was equipped with air conditioning, audio and video systems with monitors, a cooking unit and a refrigerator up to 85 liters. There is a toilet, individual lighting and ventilation systems above the seats. A luggage block with an area of 6 m² has been designed.
MAZ-203
The MAZ-203 bus is designed with a low floor for use in urban areas with a large flow of passengers. The model has been produced at the car plant since 2006. The modification is in demand and is still being produced.
The equipment is developed in accordance with European standards for the quality of passenger movement (UNECE Regulations No. 85, No. 107). When equipped, the vehicle weighs 11,100 kg; when driving, the maximum speed is 130 km/h.
The designed number of seats varies from 28 to 37. Nominally the bus can accommodate up to 100 people.
The interior floor is designed at a distance of 330 mm from the road. The body is manufactured using the same technology for MAZ buses. Galvanized pipes are used for the frame. The rectangular cross-section allows you to securely fasten glass and trim panels.
The cabin is equipped with panoramic double-glazed windows, and the interior is complemented by an air conditioning system. The wheels are equipped with disc brakes with pneumatic drive. The model is equipped with ASR and ABS systems. At the buyer's request, a Belarusian-made engine or one manufactured according to Euro-3 standards with an automated gearbox is installed.
MAZ-215
Modification 215 belongs to large-sized types, optimal for transporting people within a large city, because designed for routes with a large flow of passengers. The model is low-floor, available with 5 doors. An improved articulated version is available with an additional double-leaf door.
The nominal capacity of the vehicle reaches 176 people, 35 seats are designed in the cabin. The weight of the modification is 28,000 kg, the dimensions of the bus are 18.75 x 2.55 x 3.15 m. Braking mechanisms are available with an ABS and ASR system. The bus engine is turbodiesel, meets European standards (Mercedes-Benz OM 936 LA) and is located in the front block of the vehicle. The design solution increases the maneuverability and controllability of the model.
The turning radius of the MAZ-215 is no more than 12.5 m. A cooling radiator is installed in the upper block of the machine. The model is equipped with an automated six-speed gearbox. When moving, vehicles can reach a speed of 96 km/h, the engine power is 240 hp. There are 2 parking spaces designed in the cabin (at door leaves 2, 4) for disabled people.
There are 2 electronic displays and video cameras installed inside the bus. When ordering a model, it is possible to install alarm sensors, tachograph, etc.
MAZ-226
Model 226 is designed on the basis of the MAZ-206, the number of seats for passengers has been increased to 31. The nominal capacity parameters reach 59 people. The equipment is semi-low-floor, designed for suburban routes. The model has been produced since 2007. The weight of the bus reaches 12,000 kg, and when driving the vehicle reaches a speed of 105 km/h. After the second door in the front block, the floor level of the MAZ-226 increases. The built-in platform allows you to add spacious luggage units.
MAZ-251
The MAZ-251 bus is designed to transport passengers between large populated areas and is optimal for long distances. The series has been produced since 2006. The body is standard for MAZ 2 series models, double-glazed windows are built into the frame base. Panoramic glass is installed in the front part, double glazing with external tinting is installed in the side blocks
The number of seats for passengers varies from 46 to 53. The seat layout is planned taking into account sufficient distance between the seats. The number of rows may vary (4-5). The seats are soft and equipped with tilt angle adjustment. Air ventilation and chamber lighting are provided above the passenger seats.
The vehicle is equipped with a luggage compartment of 11 m². The machine is equipped with built-in air conditioners, a compact food unit, video and audio systems, and a toilet. Handling is increased due to the ability to change the angle of the front wheels up to 58°. Smooth movement is ensured by pneumatic suspension.
The MAZ-251062 modification is equipped with an automatic brake lock, a compact kitchen, a washing unit, a dry closet, roof fans, etc.
MAZ-256
MAZ-256 commuter bus, middle class. The model was designed in 2005 and was produced until 2014. The body was made of painted plastic; the material processing method does not require touch-up of elements after mechanical damage. Double-glazed windows are built into the frame. There are 28 designed seats, the nominal capacity is 44 people. There are 2 entrance doors.
The machine is equipped with a Cummins ISF engine; the equipment can be equipped with a Deutz engine. The diesel fuel type is used, the engine power is 120 hp, the number of cylinders is 4. The model meets European parameters.
The bus was produced in several subtypes for:
- tourist trips with air conditioning, video and audio systems;
- messages within the suburb;
- transportation between remote settlements;
- transportation within the city;
- service maintenance.
How much does a MAZ bus cost?
The cost of MAZ buses (MAZ-215, MAZ-226, MAZ-101, etc.) depends on the configuration, type of engine (Belarusian production or foreign brands), the presence of additional components (air conditioning, built-in kitchen, lighting). Some modifications have been discontinued and replaced by improved second-generation models. The rental price depends on the time the car is used and the quality of the buses.
You can purchase equipment directly from the manufacturer or through dealers. The price of a new bus at the factory is lower than that of intermediaries. Purchasing modern models allows you to take advantage of warranty repair services and order additional equipment. Externally, the MAZ 4371 was practically no different from the MAN L2000. Moreover, the first batches of the Minsk product received a German chassis. However, then its own chassis was created. They began to install a new cabin on it.
For a long time, the MAZ 4371 was considered one of the most advanced trucks. However, car owners criticized the car even then. For this technique, headlights made in China and characterized by low power were used, so the lighting of the model was rather weak. Experienced drivers replaced this element immediately after purchase.
In general, reviews from MAZ 4371 owners indicate that the car is a good alternative to foreign analogues. The model is highly reliable and durable and is perfectly adapted to the Russian climate and roads. In the category of medium-duty trucks, the equipment fully meets the needs of the market.

When creating this bus, the designers set themselves the task of unifying it as much as possible with the 5-ton Zubrenok truck (MAZ-4370). This made it possible to reduce the cost of the car and reduce the cost of maintenance and repairs. A frame structure body is installed on the base chassis frame.
It is noteworthy that it is lined with plastic panels not only on the front and back, but also on the sides, as well as on the top. This eliminates the problem of corrosion and ensures the durability of the body. The panels are attached to the frame using special glue.
The MAZ-256 can be produced both in a tourist version and in a version for urban and suburban transportation. The last one
we chose for our test drive.
Outside
The appearance of the bus makes a good impression. Pleasant modern design, light, unobtrusive colors. Large windows with glued glass attract attention.
The bottom edges of the door windows are flush with all the others, forming a solid line that slopes gently toward the front. This gives the car a complete look and dynamism.
Lighting technology is in the spirit of current fashion: in front and behind there are different-sized round lampshades; The headlights are also equipped with lenses that enhance the light
bun.
At the bottom of the sides, along their entire length, there are large folding hatches. There are three of them on the left, and, as it turned out, behind them were hidden a fuel tank, an autonomous heater and a receiver, as well as a spare wheel. And on the right there are two luggage compartment hatches - an inheritance from the tourist version of the bus. The same is the origin of the trunk in the rear wall of the body - not deep, but wide. Note that all covers in the raised position are fixed by gas-filled shock absorbers,
and when lowered, they are locked with a key.
There are small round hatches on the front and rear bumpers: towing devices are hidden behind them.
Inside
MAZ-256 is a vehicle on a frame chassis, designed not only for the city, but also for the suburbs. It cannot, and should not, be low-floor. There are two steps leading into the salon, and boarding is easy: the bottom step is located just 360 mm from the ground. Wide door opening (650 mm) and
comfortable handrails also contribute to this.
The first impression of the salon is a lot of air and light. The internal height is more than two meters. Large side windows reach to the ceiling, the upper half of the rear panel is solid glass. It can’t be stuffy in the cabin: there are large ventilation vents in the windows – just enough for a person to crawl through. A

The driver's workplace is well equipped. There is an air-suspended chair installed here, and you can change not only the height of the seat cushion, but also its inclination. When adjusting in the longitudinal direction, the seat travel is insufficient - for drivers of shorter than average height it is advisable to move it closer
to the pedals.
The tilt angle is adjustable over a wide range, with a floor pedal located on the left, near the clutch. But the depth of the column, despite assurances from company representatives that this was possible, could not be adjusted.

On the run
While preparing for the test, we did not know what engine was installed on our bus. The fact is that the MAZ-256, although developed on the Zubrenok chassis, can be equipped upon request with a 170-horsepower Deutz Euro 3 turbodiesel. However, it was not possible to test the Belarusian with a German “heart”. Our bus had a 156 hp diesel engine. With. from the famous D-245 family,
meeting Euro 2 standards.
The Minsk diesel engine pulls, you just don’t have to be shy about revving it up: it “wakes up” at the equator of the tachometer’s green zone – after 1500 rpm. In fifth gear at the top of the green zone - 1800 rpm - the car accelerated to 75 km/h. Obviously, this is her cruising speed on the highway.
The fact is that, unlike the tourist version, there is a different gear ratio in the rear axle, designed not so much for high speed as for high traction. However, when overtaking we went beyond the 90 km/h mark. Still, I would like the engine to be more powerful. During peak hours, with our “full load”, i.e., like herrings in a barrel, this would improve the dynamics of the car. Minsk diesel is noisy in operation.
At idle speed, excessive vibration is observed: in particular, through the “jumping”
In the interior mirror, little could be seen.
The steering wheel is light, although at 80 km/h on the highway it was sometimes necessary to steer slightly. Probably, gusts of side wind had an effect. The pedals are soft and obedient. The brakes of the car are grippy, they are taken at the beginning of the pedal stroke. By the way, all MAZ-256
have ABS system as standard.
Although the bus is built on a truck chassis, the suspension did not seem overly stiff to us, even when not fully loaded. During the test, we came across a section of road that was being repaired. The suspension “swallowed” holes in the asphalt with sharp edges and quickly damped the resulting vibrations. As we found out, springs
and the shock absorbers were specially modified for the bus.
Thanks to the large mirrors and large glass area, all-round visibility was excellent. The only thing missing was additional mirrors for observation
behind the road directly next to the wheels.
