Characteristics

During the release of the first models, the MAZ 4370 was one of the most popular low-bed, medium-duty trucks throughout the entire former USSR. The car was in even greater demand than its foreign counterparts.

The popularity of the model was influenced by several main qualities, most often mentioned in owner reviews, namely:

  1. Availability. The price of MAZ 4370 is significantly lower than that of European trucks;
  2. Simplicity. The design of the model turned out to be quite simple and understandable. The same goes for management;
  3. Maintainability. All spare parts are quite widely distributed, and specialized equipment will not be required to perform any repair work;
  4. Cheap service. Consumables and spare parts are very affordable;
  5. Load capacity. Compared to similar models, this truck has a greater carrying capacity, which significantly expands its capabilities in the field of cargo transportation;
  6. Economical. The diesel power unit used has an average fuel consumption of 17-18 liters per 100 kilometers, which is quite an excellent indicator.
  7. In addition to all this, the MAZ 4370 has excellent driving characteristics. As consumers note, the car has a very soft ride, both with and without cargo on board.

Minuses

But, like any other equipment, this truck also has its drawbacks, of which there are many.

  1. Low efficiency of the heating system is often noted. In low temperature conditions, the heater can warm up the windshield, but it cannot cope with the side ones. And in any operating mode.
  2. The cabin itself has fairly large gaps, due to which cold air easily enters the cabin. Everyone solves this problem on their own, through additional insulation.
  3. At the top of the cabin, the manufacturer placed an open shelf used for storing some things. However, its design is flawed, since everything often falls out of it when driving.
  4. The cabin, although spacious, is not enough. For example, for a driver of average height, for a comfortable position behind the wheel, the seats will need to be moved almost all the way to the rear wall of the cabin. But on newer versions this problem was partially solved. Now the seat in this position does not touch the wall, but since the mechanism is not so reliable, over time the structure becomes loose.
  5. Also, some owners are unhappy with the pedal assembly. Basically, various inconveniences here are caused by their location: the clutch pedal is installed quite high. In addition, the clutch does not have a booster, which requires considerable effort to be pressed.
  6. The cabin design was weak and not rigid enough. With the cab tilted down, nothing can be done with the doors. For example, if they are open, then it is impossible to close them, and if they are open, then, on the contrary, they can be closed. They also note that door locks can be opened not only with the main key, but also with any other key, even for an ordinary door. But the owners also came up with a solution to this problem: one of the door lock cylinders is clogged with a wooden wedge, and the other door is blocked using an alarm. The door opens in exactly the same way. In this regard, the use of a key is not so necessary.
  7. For the MAZ 4370, a diesel power plant was chosen, previously used on tractors. Although this engine has been modernized, it is still not entirely suitable for such a truck. This is primarily due to the fact that it is too noisy and produces much more vibration than engines in similar trucks. In terms of maintenance, this unit is also not well thought out. To replace the oil filter, you will need to dismantle the turbine. But this drawback is already a design cost, since initially this engine was not suitable for turbocharging, and after installation the design of the block did not change. In addition, the turbocharging system creates various inconveniences when replacing the coarse fuel filter.
  8. The covering of the cabin and other elements of this truck is not of high quality. The paint on the sides and side underrun bars wears off quite quickly. The paint on the cabin also crumbles quite quickly. But the unimportant quality of the metal, which begins to rust after the first years of operation, is already reflected here.
  9. The design of the frame and suspension is not designed for overloads. If the weight exceeds the stated value, the suspension may break.

The main purpose of this truck is primarily to transport any cargo. Moreover, the car can also tow trailers. As for flights, the MAZ 4370 often operates intracity, suburban and intraregional flights. The car, based on the German MAN L 2000, was presented in the summer of 1999, at the same time its mass production began at the facilities of the Minsk Automobile Plant. Since then, the car has been repeatedly modified, mainly in technical terms.

The appearance of the MAZ-4370 is simple and unobtrusive - the truck’s cabin has a “square” outline with a large windshield, a large rectangular radiator grille and low-set head lighting equipment.

“Zubrenok” is available in three different versions, differing from each other in overall dimensions: the length of the car is 5500-8200 mm, the width extends to 2550 mm (not counting the exterior mirrors), and the height is 2850 mm (along the cabin level) . Between the pairs of wheels the truck fits 3000-4200 mm (depending on the version), and its ground clearance is 230 mm.

When equipped, the basic version of the MAZ-4370 weighs 3950 kg, and its technically permissible load capacity does not exceed 6000 kg. The total weight of the vehicle reaches 10,100 kg, of which 3,750 kg puts pressure on the front axle, and 6,350 kg on the rear axle.

Most often it is found in a flatbed version (with or without an awning), but is also available with other special add-ons: garbage truck, isothermal or manufactured goods vans, etc.

The interior of the MAZ-4370 demonstrates an unremarkable design and has thoughtful ergonomics - all controls are within reach. Although the truck has obvious problems with the quality of materials and workmanship. There are three seats in the car cabin, and a sprung seat with adjustments is installed on the driver’s side.

“Zubrenok” is found in several modifications, which are equipped with in-line four-cylinder diesel engines with a displacement of 4.75-4.76 liters with a turbocharger, direct supply of Common Rail fuel, a horizontal shaft arrangement, charge air cooling and a cast iron block and cylinder head:

  • MAZ- 43704 is equipped with an MMZ D-245.30 E2 (Euro-2) engine, which produces 155 hp. (115 kW) at 2400 rpm and 515 N•m of rotating thrust at 1600 rpm.
  • The “heart” of the MAZ -437043 is the “four” MMZ D-245.30 E3 (“Euro 3”), producing 155 horsepower (115 kW) at 2400 rpm and 575 N•m of peak output at 1500 rpm.
  • Under the cabin of the MAZ- 437030 there is a DEUTZ BF4M 1013FC (“Euro 4”) unit, the potential of which is 170 hp. (125 kW) at 2400 rpm and 700 N•m of torque at 1300 rpm.

A little history

The first samples of a new class of truck - a low-bed, medium-duty delivery vehicle, very much in demand in the market of new Russia - were created by MA3 in the late 1990s together with the Gorky Automobile Plant. Despite the fact that the Soviet Union was put to death, the economic ties developed over decades remained strong for a long time. But later, without bringing the project to completion, each manufacturer went their own way. The Minsk Automobile Plant unilaterally refused to supply GAZ with its MAZ-5336 type cabs. And when creating our own medium-tonnage delivery truck, we took the German MAN L 2000 as a basis. Only it was decided to add load-carrying capabilities to it, and in the summer of 1999 the first MA3-4Z70 “3ubrenok” left the factory gates.

Serious payload capacity and a spacious cabin were indeed the undeniable advantages of this car: according to these indicators, the Bychki and Valdai were left behind. The cabover cab of the Zubrenok, which it inherited from the “adult” MAZ, was much more spacious and comfortable, and the MA3-4Z70, with similar dimensions and maneuverability, could carry much more cargo than the Valdai or Bychka. We can say that for a long time the Minsk medium-tonnage truck did not have a worthy competitor on the domestic market. Until the Chelny medium-tonnage truck KamAZ-4308 “Kamazenok” (also an unofficial name) appeared in 2007.

In the 2010s, the turn of a new generation of medium-duty trucks came, Minsk Auto was spared many of the shortcomings of the first model; equipped with a new restyled cabin and more modern and environmentally friendly diesel engines.

The driver's seat was quite comfortable for its time, but it couldn't be called modern. It has air suspension and several different adjustment options to allow you to choose the most comfortable position for any size driver. As for the controls, everything here is similar to the larger trucks of the Minsk Automobile Plant.

The cabin also has its drawbacks, among which they often mention poor build quality, fit of interior trim parts, and the quality of the materials themselves used inside the cabin.
