In 2007, the Kama Automobile Plant began producing the KamAZ-6520 heavy-duty dump truck. This 6x4 truck is capable of transporting up to 20 tons of cargo with a total volume of 12 m3 in a standard body configuration or up to 20 m3 in a configuration with an increased side. The design of the dump truck widely uses foreign-made components: engine, transmission, injection pump and a number of others, which increases its reliability and efficiency. There are several modifications that differ in engine power and type of cargo platform.
Description
The model allows the plant to maintain its first position in the automotive market of Russia and the CIS. This heavy-duty dump truck has been considered the first from the Kama manufacturer for over ten years. Today it is widely used in construction and is used for large-scale quarrying and agricultural work.
Its development was dictated by necessity, since since the beginning of the two thousandth the existing KamAZ 55111 and KamAZ 65115 models, whose carrying capacity was thirteen and fifteen tons, were not enough to meet the increased needs of the construction industry.
Serial production began in 2003. It is interesting that at this time many cars had already undergone restyling, in which they received comfortable cabins. However, the new truck was produced with an outdated cab until 2007, after which it was replaced. Therefore, today the cabin is not inferior in comfort to other cars of the automaker.
The service life of KamAZ before overhaul is 500 thousand kilometers. The first maintenance is carried out after five and a half thousand kilometers, and the second after sixteen and a half thousand kilometers.
Since KamAZ became the first model in a long period of time, new trucks were also developed on its basis. The first four-axle trucks in Russia were produced - KamAZ 6540 dump trucks with an additional axle (8*4 wheel arrangement), which are capable of transporting cargo weighing up to 18.5 tons. Another similar four-axle truck, KamAZ 65201, transports up to 25 tons. These vehicles are especially needed where there are restrictions on axle load.

At first, the trucks were equipped with KamAZ-740.51-320 diesel engines with turbocharging. They were developed back in the nineties and were equipped with other cars. But since 2009, they began to be equipped with KamAZ-740.63-400 Euro-4 standard. The engine is also turbocharged. It features better performance compared to the earlier version.
Among other things, some dump trucks began to be equipped with even more productive Cummins ISLe +350 units. Their power is 334 horsepower with a volume of 8.9 liters and a torque of 2738 Nm.
Consumption at idle speed
To determine fuel consumption at idle, it is necessary to divide the engine displacement by 2. Thus, a 6.7 liter engine will consume 3.3 liters per hour at idle, while for a 10.8 liter engine this figure reaches 5.5 liters . For a 12 liter Mercedes-Benz engine, the idle consumption is 6 liters per hour.
There is another way to determine fuel consumption at idle in one hour. To do this, you need to subtract 10% from the official average consumption. It is important to keep in mind that this method is best used in winter operating conditions.
Design Features
To provide better lifting capacity, strength and achieve economy, the machine must be equipped with a new hydraulic system, a reinforced frame and various components.
KamAZ 6520 is equipped as standard with a metal cargo platform with an unloading mechanism at the rear. This dump truck has the main technical characteristics of the body that it is located on a reinforced frame, and strong hydraulics driven by the power take-off allow it to lift heavy loads. The debut modifications of the truck were driven by a KamAZ-740.51-320 V-shaped diesel engine (Euro 2), equipped with a turbocharging and intercooling system for charge air. However, the engine was not very economical, as a result of which it was replaced by more modern turbodiesels.

The engine is equipped with a Common Rail fuel system and an HX40 turbocharger with an adjustable exhaust tract. KamAZ 740.63-400. This power unit complies with Euro 3 standards, it has a displacement of 11.76 liters and develops a rated power of 400 hp at a crankshaft speed of 1,900 rpm. Structurally, the engine is a V-shaped “eight” with a turbine and an intercooling system for charge air.
The dump truck is equipped with a fuel tank of 500 liters, sometimes an additional tank with a filling capacity of 350 liters is installed. Fuel consumption depends on operating conditions and engine. KamAZ-6520, equipped with a domestic engine, consumes up to 45 liters of fuel in the summer; in winter, consumption rates increase by 7-10 liters. Cummins ISLe +350 engines are more economical and consume 12-15% less diesel fuel than domestic counterparts.
Transmission, power supply KamAZ-6520
Even the pre-restyling versions of the KamAZ-6520 dump truck were equipped with a modern ZF-8S1820 gearbox manufactured by Zahnrad Fabrik. This eight-speed manual transmission ensured comfortable operation of the car and was highly reliable.
Today, the bulk of KamAZ-6520 vehicles are equipped with a 16-speed manual transmission ZF 16S1820. The transmission consists of a main four-speed gearbox with a divider and range. The advantages of this box include low noise levels, ease of gear shifting and the ability to use a ZF intarader (secondary retarder). The interaction of the engine with the gearbox is carried out using a single-disc diaphragm clutch with a hydraulic booster and a pneumatic drive.
The car's electronic and electrical systems are powered by two 12-volt batteries with a capacity of 190 A/h. A voltage regulator is installed in the driver's cab, and the truck is also equipped with a powerful two-kilowatt 28-volt generator.
Brakes and suspension KamAZ-6520
Like most vehicles from the Kama plant, the KamAZ-6520 is equipped with drum-type brakes with energy accumulators, which provide acceptable safety when driving on public roads. The diameter of the brake drum is 400 millimeters, the width of the brake pads is 180 mm. In addition to the main brake system, the truck is equipped with a spare, parking and auxiliary brake. The front suspension of the car is made in a combination of semi-elliptical longitudinal springs and hydraulic shock absorbers. A little history
The first Soviet dump truck appeared shortly after the American one, it was developed by engineers of the Moscow Automobile Society (AMO), later renamed the Plant Named after Stalin (ZIS), and then the Plant named after Likhachev (ZIL), whose name, along with its maiden name, is this plant still wears it today (AMO ZIL). The dump truck was called ZIS-5 and, created on the basis of the famous and popular “three-ton” truck of that time, the AMO-3 truck, it was produced in a variety of modifications and incarnations for more than thirty years.
Of course, “three-ton” is not a scale for a real dump truck. Already in the 40s in Soviet Belarus, the Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ) began production of the heavy MAZ-205 mining dump truck, which could carry 6 tons of cargo almost off-road. Birth of Kamaz
Both MAZ and KrAZ, for all their advantages, had one common drawback - they were not so much cars as “steel monsters” (KrAZ generally did not fit into our standard roads in terms of dimensions). It was very difficult to imagine them anywhere other than a quarry (for example, on a city street), and the “three-ton” ZIS was hopelessly outdated by the early 70s.
KamAZ 53121
In addition, in the early 70s, the most modern (by then standards) truck production plant, KamAZ, was built in the city of Naberezhnye Chelny. And then, almost simultaneously with the first model - the KAMAZ 5320 flatbed truck - the KAMAZ 53121 dump truck was launched into production. This vehicle was somewhat inferior to the KrAZ in terms of carrying capacity (10 tons instead of 12), but was no longer so “brutal” and, most importantly, had total weight no more than 18 tons and fuel consumption no more than 30 liters per 100 kilometers.
Ten years later, a new version appeared, KAMAZ 55111, with slightly reduced dimensions while maintaining the same load capacity. From 2007 to the present day, the Kama plant has been producing the KAMAZ 6520 vehicle, which, with its own weight of 12 tons, is capable of transporting 20 tons of cargo, and in its dimensions it fits perfectly into the acceptable dimensions characteristic of its predecessors in the KAMAZ family.
Transition to the market
Of course, the appearance of this vehicle at the turn of the nineties and zeros was, first of all, an effective response to the market needs for new vehicles with increased payload capacity, and it was KAMAZ 6520, 20 ton, that became the first representative of the heavy class of dump trucks in the model range of the Kama plant. has been holding a leading position for a whole decade now and has not lost its popularity and demand.
Undoubtedly, KAMAZ always produced very high-quality products, but by the end of the century its dump trucks began to succumb to competition with the products of the world's leading manufacturers, in some ways seriously lagging behind them in technical characteristics.

But they all have the same engine brand - KamAZ-740.73-400 (Euro-4), with Common Rail; and the manual transmission is also similar - “ZF-16S1820”. In addition to the rectangular and enlarged “grain” body, U-shaped (or, in Russian speaking, “trough-shaped”) bodies are also installed on the KamAZ-6520 chassis.
Since the KamAZ-6520 was the first model developed by our vehicle in quite a long time, new specialized trucks were soon created on its basis. So, in addition to the already mentioned “grain” modification “KAMAZ-6520-23072-63” with a 33-cc body, the first domestic four-axle trucks were built on the basis of the KamAZ-6520 chassis. Flaws
Like any other special equipment, this truck has, or rather, had the other side of the coin, that is, disadvantages, namely: the drivers were not happy with the performance of the speedometer, brakes and fuel system. Car history
For some time now, the line of the Kama Automobile Enterprise has not had a heavy-duty car that could meet the latest standards that the market demands today.
Therefore, we decided to release the efficient KamAZ 6520 model, which, in addition, made it possible to increase its carrying capacity. This car remained among the leaders of the car market for more than 10 years and, at the same time, remained popular and in demand.
Of course, KamAZ vehicles have always been produced with high quality, and could work where other vehicles were unable to do so, but until the 2000s, dump truck versions began to lose out to competition in the global vehicle market, lagging significantly behind in technical terms.
The car began its design history back in the 1990s. It was at that time that the domestic car market experienced a shortage of special vehicles that would be ready to function in difficult Russian conditions and transport massive loads.
Although in those years the plant produced quite a few cars, however, their technical component was much inferior to foreign versions. They used KamAZ 65115 quite actively, its carrying capacity was 15,000 kg, but even that was no longer enough.
As a result, the Kama Automobile Plant managed to develop a car marked 6520, the wheel formula of which is 6x4. He could be called an excellent worker who could cope with almost any task. It had design features such as ABS, an all-metal welded platform and control of operation from the cab.
History of creation
KamAZ-6520 dump trucks are one of those main families of the Kama Automobile Plant, which allow the company to confidently maintain a leading position in the truck market in the CIS. Being designed for the transportation of bulk construction, agricultural and industrial cargo on roads with an axle load limit of 10-13 tons, this particular vehicle more than ten years ago became the very first heavy-duty dump truck in the KamAZ plant product line.
Until the beginning of the 2000s, the most powerful dump trucks produced at the Kama Automobile Plant were the KamAZ-55111 with a carrying capacity of 13 tons, as well as the heavier KamAZ-65115, with a carrying capacity of 15 tons. But at the beginning of the new century, a real grandiose “construction boom” unfolded in the country, and the capabilities of these machines were not always sufficient for the growing needs of the booming construction industry.
Important! The vehicle is not a modification of previously produced trucks or a copy of vehicles from other automakers.
Therefore, in just a few years, a new model of a dump truck with a 20-ton payload was quickly developed. This vehicle, designed for large-scale construction, quarrying and agricultural work (grain trucks), having a load capacity of up to 20 tons, has become the most powerful dump truck in the vehicle line. Its serial production started in 2003. An important point: KamAZ-6520 was not a modernization of dump trucks previously produced by the company, or a copy of any of the trucks from other manufacturers. This is a completely new model, developed from scratch.
Important! KamAZ 6520 is the basis for a family of heavy-duty vehicles. About a dozen of its modifications have already been released. The design meets all the requirements of Russian and foreign standards.
By 2003, many KamAZ models had already undergone restyling and acquired a more comfortable new-style cabin: with more comfortable seats, new-style instrument panels, climate and acoustic systems. However, the new KamAZ-6520 dump truck received an outdated cabin, developed “under Tsar Gorokh,” and was equipped with it until 2007. Then it was finally replaced with a restyled one. However, not only KamAZ, but also many other automakers have traditionally not considered it necessary to take care of the comfortable work of dump truck drivers. But now the KamAZ-6520 cab is in no way inferior to other company vehicles in terms of comfort.
Appearance
The operating systems and components of the truck were designed to withstand difficult operating conditions. Our review guest cannot be called an improved working version - this is a completely new model that was developed from scratch. From the very beginning, the car was equipped with a previous model cabin, which is already outdated.
They decided not to touch it for now because the main efforts were directed towards researching the innovative chassis. A little later, the cabin was replaced with a more improved one. This made it possible to abandon the literally obsolete and morally old cabin. The new one began to look more beautiful, received new headlights (lens optics) and a visor. The car had a high roof, which had a lower belt and a unique buffer.
The fact that this element was introduced into the design made it possible to ensure the most convenient boarding and disembarking of people. The windshield was not divided, but was solid. As many as 3 wipers will be able to clear it from rain or snow, which will allow you to get better visibility. There are also additional mirrors that will help you be more mobile without fear of catching the car and damaging it.
The cabin is raised using a standard hydraulic booster. The section for the mechanical method of lifting the cabin was placed on the traditional right side, but under the passenger door between the lower and upper legs.
If there is a special need for transporting large cargo, it is possible to increase the body volume with special sides. They can be installed by the factory itself.
The body itself is also presented with an oval section of 16 cubes. The shape of such a body makes it possible to reduce the sticking of cargo by changing the center of gravity of the load closer to the middle of the body.
Cabin interior
Getting into the KamAZ-6520 cab, you immediately notice the presence of a safety steering wheel, which has received a new look. The steering wheel control device already had a hydraulic rotation limiter, which was intended to prevent the steering rods from coming out of position.
The steering column itself is adjustable in angle, which will allow it to be adjusted to any driver. The dashboard is quite informative, all the required controls are at hand, the buttons are all convenient and pleasant to the touch.
The instrument panel received two large dials, where the left one shows the speed mode, and the right one shows the speed of the power unit (up to 3,000 rpm). There is a monochrome small rectangular display showing other relevant information (mileage, etc.).
They didn’t forget to install cup holders, and on the front panel there is a small island table that can be used for your needs. The cabin is much more comfortable than previous models; the glass is panoramic, which increases visibility. The company's design staff decided not to install a sleeping place.
Moreover, the KamAZ 6520 can even have an air conditioner for an additional fee, which allows you to close the windows in hot weather in the summer and work in a cool environment, getting less tired. There is convenient access to fuses.
The upper part received a pair of speakers located on the sides, glove compartments and a recess located in the middle for various things. The doors still don't have power windows, which is a bit disappointing.
We made thermal and noise insulation of the engine and gearbox, which made the driver and passenger feel more comfortable. The cabin received air suspension, which increases the level of comfort for the driver and passenger.
In addition, the KamAZ-6520 has pneumatic seats, which are independently adjustable (can be raised, lowered, moved forward and backward). The new domestic dump truck is quite easy to drive, not much heavier than a passenger car.
Features of the cabin design
The design of the KamAZ 6520 cab remained without significant changes until 2007, when it was supplemented with a berth and an updated U-shaped radiator grille. The headlights were also modified and the size of the bumper was increased.

The body part of this model had one serious drawback, namely the lack of a heating system, which created a number of difficulties when transporting certain building and consumable materials. Subsequently, this defect was corrected, and in the modern modification of KamAZ 6520 there is a special visor that covers the space between the cab and the body.
Other design features include an ABS braking system, an all-metal welded platform and the ability to control key elements directly from the cab.

In models released after 2009, the cabin is equipped with air suspension and has an improved exterior. A sufficient number of dump trucks were equipped with drive axles from the famous Hungarian manufacturer Madara.

Power unit
If we take the time until 2008, the Russian company equipped the 6520 dump truck with a standard engine operating on diesel fuel, which meets all Euro-2 standards. A similar power unit received intercooling and a turbocharging system. But later the automobile plant decided to make amendments to the engine.
As a result, this made it possible to equip the advanced diesel power unit so that it meets Euro-3 environmental standards. The KAMAZ 740.63-400 V-shaped 8-cylinder engine has a displacement of 11.76 liters and produces up to 400 horsepower with a maximum torque of 1,225 Nm.
This installation allows the dump truck to reach a maximum speed of 90 km/h, which is quite a lot for a truck. It is also possible to install an American Cummins engine with similar power. In summer, the KamAZ 6520 power unit consumes about 46 liters per 100 kilometers, but in winter it is already 53 liters. The fuel tank is designed for 350 liters.
Transmission
A new sixteen-speed manual gearbox ZF Ecosplit 16S 1820 TO was introduced for the Russian dump truck. Interestingly, the box is the company’s own production, and its structural elements allow it to be used for 1,000,000 km. The clutch is a diaphragm single-disc with a hydraulic drive and a pneumatic booster.
Suspension
The suspension is of the spring type. Wheelbase 6x4. Curb weight – 12,950 kg. Loading capacity - 20,000 kg (drivers often transport more, for example, up to 25 tons, but the plant does not recommend overloading the dump truck).
The total weight is 33,100 kg. To increase the stability of the KamAZ 6520, anti-roll bars were installed on the front axle and rear axle. Therefore, a bad road does not frighten a dump truck.

KamAZ-6520 is equipped with a large dump platform with rear unloading. The body is capable of lifting even large loads thanks to powerful hydraulics. The volume of the body when transporting light loads can be increased by means of extension sides provided by the design. Excellent traction and dynamic characteristics allow the machine to overcome an incline of 25% even when fully loaded.
The traditional “Kamaz” rumble of the vehicle disappeared thanks to a number of measures that made it possible to make the model comply with the requirements of UNECE rules. Reduced noise makes working on KamAZ-6520 more comfortable.

The model is equipped with a modernized cabin with a high roof, which has a lower belt and an original buffer. The introduction of an additional step into the design of this element ensured maximum ease of landing. Vehicle stability is achieved by installing anti-roll bars on the front axle and rear axle. Difficult road conditions will not be a problem for KamAZ-6520. Locking cross-axle differentials can significantly increase its cross-country ability.
The car also had its downsides. Owners complained about the fuel and brake systems, speedometer and generator. However, problems appeared only in the first modifications; later the manufacturer eliminated them.
In 2010, the Kama Automobile Plant presented a restyled version of the dump truck that meets advanced requirements. Now this model is one of the flagships of the brand.
