  • Models from the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant are distinguished by their off-road capability. The UAZ transfer case improves the vehicle's cross-country ability and allows you to move on surfaces of varying quality.     Node purpose

    The UAZ 469 transfer case is used to engage all-wheel drive. The mechanism is two-stage. This allows you to double the speed range for forward and reverse movement. Reducing torque when driving off-road reduces wheel slip.

    UAZ 469 has a constantly engaged rear axle. The front axle is pluggable. Its inclusion is provided by the manufacturer for driving on low-quality surfaces.

    IMPORTANT: It is prohibited to use the vehicle with the front axle constantly engaged when driving on high-quality road surfaces. Failure to comply with this rule will result in damage to transfer case components or jamming of rotating parts.

    At different periods of time, four and five-speed gearboxes of several types from different manufacturers were installed on UAZ vehicles.
    Production, since 1992, OJSC Avtodetal-Service (ADS), Ulyanovsk: four-speed with synchronizers in III and IV gears, four-speed and five-speed with synchronizers in all forward gears. Manufactured by AMZ OJSC, Arzamas: five-stage, fully synchronized. ADS OJSC under the EXPERT trademark, made in China: five-speed fully synchronized. And manufactured by HYUNDAI DYMOS, Korea: five-speed synchronized in all forward gears.

    Until 1989, a four-speed semi-synchronized gearbox was the main one for the entire model range of UAZ vehicles. In 1989, a new fully synchronized four-speed gearbox appeared and for some time both of these boxes were produced together.

    The first box was distinguished by a heavier selection of gear ratios and was considered to have higher reliability due to fewer parts. These gearboxes could be distinguished by the following feature: for the semi-synchronized one, the lever stroke when engaging the first gear is twice as long as for the other gears; for the synchronized one, the lever stroke when engaging all gears is almost the same.

    The four-speed fully synchronized gearbox of ADS OJSC was produced in the following versions:

    Somewhat later, on the basis of a fully synchronized four-speed gearbox, a five-speed one was made; nothing special was changed in the design, but simply the 5th gear housing was bolted to the rear wall of the four-speed gearbox.     The five-speed manual gearbox produced by AMZ OJSC for UAZ vehicles had catalog number 31606-1700010 and was distinguished by a unique gear shift algorithm: the rear gear was located where the second gear is usually located, and the fourth in place of the rear gear. It was believed that this arrangement of the reverse gear opposite the first should facilitate the driver’s actions when freeing a stuck car by swinging.

    Installed on cars of the UAZ-3160, UAZ-3162 family and until 2006 on the UAZ Hunter. Gear ratios of the five-speed gearbox of AMZ OJSC: I gear - 3.62, II gear - 2.59, III gear - 1.52, IV gear - 1.00, V gear - 0.86, reverse gear - 3.85. Shaft spline diameter 29 mm.

    By order of Avtodetal-Service OJSC in China, the Beijing Gear Works plant launched the production of a new fully synchronized five-speed gearbox under the ADS-BGW EXPERT brand, with a design different from the old five-speed gearbox with an attached fifth gear housing.

    ADS-BGW gear ratios: I gear - 3.83, II gear - 2.167, III gear - 1.292, IV gear - 1.00, V gear - 0.795, reverse gear - 3.52. Weight - 48 kg. The box was produced in the following versions:

    — 3181-00-1700010-00 : for three or four point mounting, for the passenger car model range of the UAZ Hunter family, shaft spline diameter 29 mm. — 3182-00-1700010-00 : for three or four point fastening, for the cargo-passenger model range of the UAZ-3741 family, shaft spline diameter 29 mm.

    In the second half of 2015, Avtodetal-Service OJSC was declared bankrupt and therefore the production of four and five-speed gearboxes produced by it for UAZ cars was discontinued for obvious reasons.

    The three-shaft five-speed gearbox DYMOS T032E has gear ratios: I gear - 4.155, II gear - 2.265, III gear - 1.428, IV gear - 1.00, V gear - 0.88, reverse gear - 3.827. Box weight - 48 kg.

    Installed on cars of the UAZ Patriot family from the very beginning of their production in 2005 and on cars of the UAZ Hunter family since 2006. The first gear of this box is the most “cargo” among the first gears of all boxes ever installed on the UAZ.     UAZ 469 transfer case

    The transfer case is rigidly mounted on the rear of the gearbox housing. The rear of the transfer case is equipped with a parking brake. It is made in the form of a drum and pads with friction linings.

    When the parking brake is applied, the release device presses the shoes against the drum, blocking the rotation of the rear axle driveshaft. After releasing the parking brake lever, the pads move in the opposite direction under the action of power springs. You can also read about UAZ “Cargo”.

    The transfer case housing consists of two parts. To prevent lubricant leakage at the joint, the parts are sealed with gaskets. Oil seals are installed on the shafts coming out of the sealed housing. They prevent lubricant from leaking out when the car is moving.

    REFERENCE: Under load, the lubricant and parts of the lubricant heat up. To avoid breaking the seal of the housing, the manufacturer equipped it with a breathing valve. The device provides communication between the device cavity and the atmosphere.

    Drive mechanism

    The RK mechanism consists of:

    • Rear axle shaft. Rigidly connected to the rear driveshaft of the car. Mounted on ball bearings. They allow the shaft to rotate freely;
    • Front axle shaft. Drives the front driveshaft. Fastened with a nut;
    • Intermediate shaft. Necessary for engaging the front axle or downshifting;
    • Shift forks. Used to move gears when turning the front axle on/off and to downshift. The movement of the forks is carried out along specialized rods. Each fork is equipped with a locking mechanism that prevents spontaneous movement of the product along the rod.

    Causes and troubleshooting

    The design of the UAZ gearbox is reliable, trouble-free and durable. However, problems with equipment occur due to errors in use and violation of established regulations.

    The transfer mechanism is controlled remotely from inside the car. downshift or front axle engagement is forced. This is done using levers installed next to the manual gearbox control.

    The front axle drive is controlled by the right lever (in the direction of travel of the vehicle). To turn on the drive, the driver moves the lever to the extreme forward position. To turn off, the lever moves in the opposite direction. The front axle is controlled when the clutch is disengaged.

    The left lever is used to reduce torque transmission. The control has three fixed positions:

    1. Straight. The lever is in the extreme forward position. In this case, the transfer case does not change the gear ratio from the gearbox;
    2. Neutral. The lever is set to the central position. Torque is not transmitted to the driving axles of the vehicle;
    3. Downward. The control is switched to the rearmost position. The transfer case mechanism reduces torque.

    ATTENTION: The UAZ 469 transfer case switching diagram, which is shown above, is equipped with a lock against involuntary downshifting. The lock is made in the form of a ball retainer, which does not allow engaging a lower gear without the front axle drive.

    Not all car owners know the name of this or that part in their car. In this case, we are talking not only about the mechanisms “hidden” in the engine, but also about the devices with which they interact literally every day. One of these parts is the gear shift lever.

    Note: The name "rocker" is not the official name for this mechanism, but it is generally accepted. In fact, this part is called the transmission control drive link.

    Signs of gearbox wear

    The driver must pay attention to possible malfunctions of vehicle components, including knowing the characteristic signs of wear on the gear shift gate, in order to take timely measures to replace it. Despite the fact that the mechanism is quite reliable, you should be aware of the following “symptoms” of its imminent breakdown:

    Before starting work, it is necessary to warm up the transmission. To do this, drive a car for 2 to 4 kilometers. When heated, the viscosity of the oil decreases and it will be easier to drain it from the crankcase.

    Changing the oil in the UAZ 469 transfer case is carried out in a certain sequence:

    • Place the vehicle on a pit, overpass or lift. Some motorists prefer to carry out the procedure while lying under the car on a specialized tray;
    • Clean oil stains and dirt in the area of ​​the drain and filler holes. A metal brush is used;
    • Remove the filler plug. Necessary to prevent the occurrence of a vacuum in the crankcase when draining liquid;
    • Place a container to collect used lubricant under the drain hole. The container must have a volume sufficient to collect waste liquid. It is better to choose a vessel with a wide neck. A bucket or cut plastic canister will do;
    • Remove the drain plug. To prevent the plug from falling into the waste oil container, it must be held firmly;
    • Wait until the fluid drains completely from the crankcase;

    • Clean the drain and filler plug from dirt and metal particles;
    • Install the drain plug;
    • Fill in new lubricant using specialized tools. Syringes or pumps are used;
    • Install the filler plug.

    REFERENCE: When carrying out the oil change procedure on a UAZ 469, it is recommended to check the functionality of the breathing valve (breather). Malfunction of the product can lead to depressurization of the crankcase.

    After replacement, it is necessary to eliminate oil leaks formed during the work. A rag is used for this.

    Safety precautions when performing work

    To avoid injury when changing the oil in the transfer case, you must:

    1. Install wheel chocks under the vehicle wheels. This will prevent the car from rolling spontaneously;
    2. When dismantling the drain plug, it must be kept at a distance from the transfer case. Hot oil from the transfer case can cause burns if it comes into contact with the skin;
    3. Personal protective equipment such as gloves and goggles should be used to protect eyes and skin.

    From the above it follows that the UAZ 469 transfer case is necessary to improve off-road performance. The design of the RK allows you to connect the front axle and reduce the torque from the gearbox. For normal operation, the unit must be serviced regularly.

    Since the fundamental connection diagram for the reduction gear has not changed, this design flaw was transferred to the helical transfer case by inheritance from the spur gear; more about it in this material.

    And only in 2008, almost three years after the start of production of the UAZ Patriot, the car plant somewhat modernized the transfer case gear shift mechanism itself. Plus, I added a plate with a spring to its design, which dampened the vibrations of the shift lever and pulled it towards the box body. After these modifications, the situation with spontaneous shutdown of downshifts improved somewhat, but the problem itself did not completely disappear.

    Quality of RK parts
