In the photo, the one in the clip is even visually smaller. if size 51 existed, but size 52 obviously wouldn’t fit. Although I might buy it and try it purely for fun.

Front axle features


The Spicer axle housing consists of a cast material into which the axle shafts are pressed. The axle housing is closed using a crankcase cover. The transverse plane of the device does not have a connector, which increases reliability and adds rigidity to the structure. Also, the differential and main gear of the Spicer bridge are located in one housing, which determines the high precision of engagement and operation of the device. All these features lead to an increase in the performance of products. Now, in order to service the device, it is enough to remove the crankcase cover and carry out the necessary repairs or replacement of products. Periodic monitoring of the oil level in the system, timely replacement of seals and bearings, as well as elimination of play in gears and differentials - all this is the main criterion for servicing the unit. The Spicer bridge is equipped with new types of joints (CV joints), the feature of which is durability. These hinges require periodic lubrication of the structure, for which CV joint-4 material is used. It is unacceptable to use Litol-24 to lubricate joints. An equally important point is the gear ratio of the Spicer bridge. Devices are available with two front axle ratios for the UAZ Patriot: 4.11 and 4.62. Axles with a value of 4.11 are installed on a UAZ Patriot SUV with a ZMZ 409 gasoline engine, and 4.62 on ZMZ 514 diesel units.

Replacing the drive gear shaft seal of the front axle reducer

Replace the oil seal if oil leaks are detected from under the gearbox flange.
An oil leak can also be caused by excess oil in the crankcase or a clogged breather.
You will need
: a 27 socket socket, a wrench, a flat-blade screwdriver, a torque wrench.

Brake the car with the parking brake and place chocks under the rear wheels of the car. Raise and place the front of the car on supports. 2

While holding the bolts from turning, unscrew the four nuts securing the propeller shaft to the front axle gearbox flange, remove the bolts and move the shaft to the side. 3

Unscrew the nut securing the front axle drive shaft flange and remove the flange with the reflector. 4

Using a screwdriver, remove the oil seal from the axle housing. 5
. Using a suitable size mandrel, press the new oil seal into place.

You can use an old oil seal as a mandrel.

Purpose of the rear axle axle oil seal

The oil seal is located directly on the axle shaft itself, so it is exposed to the rotating elements of the rear drive. Let us remind you that this procedure should be resorted to if the owner of a UAZ Patriot discovers a leak in the area where the rear hubs are located.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. We place the car on a level area. We use a jack to hang one of the sides of the stern of the UAZ Patriot. We install a “safety net” under the bottom.
  2. We dismantle the wheel, loosening its fasteners even before raising the SUV.
  3. We drain the lubricant that is present in the bridge body.
  4. We see the hub flange, which is fixed to it with 10 bolts. We unscrew them.
  5. The next step will be to remove the axle shaft from engagement with the differential gears in the UAZ Patriot gearbox. If the axle shaft “resists” the output, then do this:
  • take the brake drum and turn it with its back side towards the assembly;
  • We screw two bolts into the holes on the drum body (they are connected to the axle shaft);
  • Having attached such a structure to the end of the axle shaft, we pull it towards ourselves, then rejoice in victory.
  1. Now you have to unscrew the lock nut. After this, we dismantle the figured washer.
  2. We proceed to unscrew the main nut and remove the second washer, after which we dismantle the outer bearing.
  3. Access to the hub is open, so we remove it.
  4. We remove the worn oil seal. For this purpose, we use pliers paired with a screwdriver.
  5. Having removed the seal, we find the bearing. It is recommended to check it for the absence of play, noise during rotation, as well as the presence of visible mechanical damage on the surface. If unsmooth rotation or the presence of play is detected, then the bearing is “sentenced” to replacement. The replacement procedure involves removing the element from the axle shaft. For this you need a suitable puller.
  6. After dismantling the UAZ Patriot oil seal, we clean its seat.
  7. We take a new element, lubricate its surface with “Litol 24” and install it, avoiding distortions. To press the oil seal in, use a special wrench. If it is missing, then a tube of the appropriate diameter will do.
  8. Alternatively, you can use a worn oil seal as a mandrel, turning it over with its back side.
  9. When the replacement of the axle shaft seal is completed, we assemble all previously dismantled parts.

Attention! Do not forget to fill in new lubricant in the required quantity.

Removing and installing the front axle final drive

The main gear is removed for repair or replacement. You will need: “10” keys, “19”, “27” sockets. 1
