All-terrain vehicles based on UAZ are very popular among fishermen, hunters and residents of hard-to-reach regions of the Russian Federation. This is due to the relatively low cost and versatility of the Soviet SUV and the possibilities for its modification. Companies and car enthusiasts create models on low-pressure tires and tracks.
On low - just forward
In terms of layout, LuAZ-969 is Zaporozhets on the contrary. The same air-cooled engine is in front, with a gearbox behind it. They change gears in a mirror way: the first one is towards you, the second one is away from you.
Next to the gearbox lever is the lever for turning on the rear drive and lowering. Between the seats there is a differential lock.
Next to the gearbox lever is the lever for turning on the rear drive and lowering. Between the seats there is a differential lock.
The standard gearbox is four-speed. But there is also a fifth off-road reduction gear. And with a gear ratio of 7.2! There is even a rear cross-axle differential lock.
Thanks to wheel gears, ground clearance is 280 mm, the bottom is almost flat, and the drive to the rear axle is hidden in a pipe. Therefore, it is difficult to break something from below.

The car has enough traction. Especially with a 42 hp engine. with a volume of 1.2 liters, which was installed on the LuAZ-969A from 1975, and then on the modernized model 969M. The car moves confidently even where the heavier UAZ and Niva sometimes give up.
But we must remember one unusual feature of the car: the downshift only works when moving forward. Therefore, rocking back and forth on a low gear is impossible.
What you will need to consider when remodeling a car
If you decide to convert your UAZ into an all-terrain vehicle by installing wheels with low-pressure tires, you will have to take into account some factors:
- Be prepared for the fact that you will have to make a number of serious changes to the transmission, axles and body parts of your car. This is especially important when it comes to converting cars such as the “loaf”. The UAZ "Patriot" on low-pressure tires will require much fewer design changes than the "loaf". This is explained by the fact that at the time when the old models were produced, modern technologies and materials had not yet been used;
Choosing tires for UAZ
- When choosing rubber, it is very important to take into account the temperatures in which they are planned to be used. For summer and winter use of the vehicle you will need at least two sets of tires;
- Low-pressure tires do not have a clear division into summer and winter options. For winter, types are used that do not become hard at subzero temperatures. This can negatively affect the vehicle's maneuverability;
- When choosing a tread pattern, remember that “deeper” does not always mean “better.” Increasing the depth of the pattern increases the load on the transmission - take into account the soil on which you plan to move and choose the optimal option for the depth of the pattern.
Long, sanitary, Russian

Already in the 1990s, the LuAZ-13021 cargo truck with a wheelbase increased from 1800 to 2300 mm went into production. Later, even the ambulance LuAZ-13028 was made based on the truck. True, it no longer went into series.

In the late 1990s, LuAZ even became Russian. Moscow region company Valletta in 1997–1999. assembled standard and long-wheelbase versions of Ukrainian all-terrain vehicles from vehicle kits. But production was soon curtailed. And not only in Russia, but also in the homeland of the amazing all-terrain vehicle.
Thus ended the story of this amazing SUV.

This Soviet all-terrain vehicle beats the UAZ off-road! And that's what happened to him
Stages of converting a UAZ car into an all-terrain vehicle
All work on the production of an all-terrain vehicle based on a UAZ vehicle can be divided into several conventional stages. Let's look at them one by one:
- Choosing a base. If there is no UAZ in the garage suitable for turning into an all-terrain vehicle, we will have to find the necessary base. Remember that the older the model, the more changes will have to be made.
- We manufacture the rear axle and suspension. Here it is better to use an independent design. Its production will entail an increase in labor costs, but this will increase the maneuverability of the machine. The suspension is connected to the rear axle with a special strut and steering bushing.
- We attach the wheels to the suspension. Metal hubs are required here. We can use cameras from trucks like the Ural.
- We select the engine, carry out installation and design the cooling system.
- After installing the engine, we install the exhaust and brake systems and clutch. We install the headlights and connect all the switching.
- We carry out all the necessary tests of the resulting all-terrain vehicle, eliminating shortcomings and defects. After making all the corrections and positive test results, we can consider the work completed - our all-terrain vehicle is ready to overcome difficulties.
Work on the production of an all-terrain vehicle based on a UAZ vehicle
What are all-terrain vehicles based on UAZ?
UAZ is a universal car that has proven itself on the roads of Russia. Nowadays, there are all-terrain vehicles based on the UAZ of various types. Most often, the classic commander's aircraft is redesigned, as it also has a comfortable interior. However, the so-called “loaf” is also converted into an all-terrain vehicle. This vehicle is often upgraded due to its good off-road performance and suspension quality.
The most common modifications of the UAZ car are found. Some owners of such cars replace only the wheels and recycle the chassis. As for efficiency, this option will be the most profitable for the common man.
You can easily find an all-terrain vehicle on tracks. This vehicle is perfect for driving through swampy areas and snowy sections of the road. A UAZ-All-terrain vehicle of this type weighs significantly more and is more difficult to maintain. If we compare tracks, the advantages lean towards the latter due to good traction.
Some models are striking in their appearance. Craftsmen redesign the car body in such a way that it can hardly be recognized. As a rule, you need to invest more money in such a vehicle and involve real craftsmen in the work. There are all-terrain vehicles on Russian roads that have an unrecognizable body.
But loaf-type models are also subject to change. Most often, tracks are installed on them. There are also models with larger ones, but their cross-country ability is worse.
Drive arrangement
If you create a tractor with caterpillar tracks, special attention should be paid to the drive to reduce the friction force. A ready-made analogue requires constant and responsible maintenance. The tracks are cleared of dirt and snow after performing various tasks.
The coupling device must move in its entirety, including the following elements:
- Gearbox;
- Clutch cover;
- Release bearing;
- Flange mounting screw;
- Flywheel;
- Crankshaft.
Frame and bridge design The rectangular frame is made of a steel pipe (diameter 57 millimeters), a pair of traverses and a pair of side members. The steering system from UAZ will fit perfectly into the entire structure. The transverse thrust is created by welding; ball ends are welded at the corners. A list of parts for the UAZ tractor frame is being prepared:
- Supports for securing the cabin - four beams;
- Four pipes for a rack measuring 80*80*6;
- Pipes for front side members;
- Steel sheet for automatic mounting of working tools;
- Channel No. 12 for the bumper;
- Six steel sheets for gusset;
- Pipes for tail spars;
- Two steel sheets for the automatic linkage bracket;
- Pipes for tail crossbars;
- Two pipes for the motor mount support.
To install the rear axle from a UAZ, follow a certain scheme:
- The flange is cut into long axle shafts;
- A hole is drilled in the center;
- The segment is well processed and inserted into the hole made;
- The parts are scalded, the excess is cut off;
- The long stocking is shortened (only two shortened axle shafts are used);
- The chamfer on the cut stocking is removed;
- The stocking joints are welded;
- The caliper is applied to the welding site;
- The UAZ axles are attached to the frame with a V-shaped structure, which will be located on the rear axle cushions.
The brake cylinder, column, and steering gear rod are taken from the UAZ. The transmission is combined according to the standard: first the engine, then the gearbox and clutch basket. All these parts also fit from UAZ.
"Trekol"-39294
The three-axle Trekol-39294 is considered one of the most popular swamp vehicles. The car is assembled at the facilities of NPF TREKOL LLC (Lyubertsy), having already produced more than 1,800 copies. Trackols can be used on public roads, which is a definite plus.
Huge wheels are the Trekol plant’s own development. Drive to all six wheels. The design uses UAZ axles, a ZMZ-409 engine or a diesel Hyundai D4BF, as well as a hodgepodge of parts from other manufacturers.

What will be useful at work
- Prepare corrugated aluminum sheets. They will come in handy when you do the sheathing.
- Buy m5 screws.
- Prepare rubber and metal pads.
- You will need synthetic mats.
- Buy triplex glass.
- Stock up on foam rubber.
- Prepare some soft plastic.
- Get a sealant.
- Be sure to prepare a driveshaft, for example, from a Volga or some other powerful car.
- Prepare screwdrivers, wrenches and other tools.
Instructions for use
The body of our all-terrain vehicle will consist of a frame and outer skin. Such a homemade vehicle as an all-terrain vehicle, the base of which is UAZ, must be durable. That is why it should be made of steel materials. For example, strong steel pipes are suitable, which will then take on a huge load.
However, if you are not able to weld pipes or do not have the opportunity to acquire them, then you can leave the original UAZ body. Homemade all-terrain vehicles based on this car are different, and some of them hardly change at all in appearance. Having taken hold of its strengthening, work not only on the side walls of the car, but also on its roof. Particular attention should be paid to the bottom of the car.
Having strengthened the body, you can move on to covering the car. The process begins with the removal of the old casing. Of course, it could have been done while strengthening the body, which makes no fundamental difference.
The material for the new skin can be either aluminum or corrugated duralumin. The latter material is the most preferable, since it has shown itself very well in counteracting negative environmental factors, and duralumin almost does not corrode at all. Moreover, the corrugated coating makes its sheets much stronger than other materials with a similar composition.
When choosing duralumin sheets, make sure that their thickness is at least 1.5 and no more than 2 mm. You will need M5 screws when attaching them to the frame. They have countersunk heads that cling to the frame.
Of course, it will be impossible to tightly fit the corrugated aluminum to the metal frame of the all-terrain vehicle. Poor quality joints and gaps will remain everywhere. Therefore, it is necessary to use rubber pads, which are used as plugs.
Treat the sheathing process with extreme caution, because it is the most problematic part of the entire work. For example, by poorly securing structural elements to an all-terrain vehicle, you can make it vulnerable to external influences.
We will also give you this advice: M5 bolts with a countersunk head, as well as all places that will then be used as fastenings, should be treated with liquid silicone. This will help protect the car from corrosion, as well as moisture that can get into the interior while crossing river fords.
We will line the inside of our cabin with thin foam rubber and soft plastic. To glaze the interior, you can use trixel glass. When working with interior trim, do not forget to treat the interior with silicone or liquid rubber in the same way as you did with the body.
Thin foam rubber, which we use to improve sound insulation, can be replaced with foam rubber. But if you don’t care about comfort, then you can do without such measures at all. The top mats can be secured with glue or special rivets. Choose rubber foot mats, as they are much easier to clean than fabric ones.
You don’t have to change the seat of the all-terrain vehicle, but leave the original UAZ ones. But it is very important to place them so that there is also room for the fuel tank inside the cabin. It is installed behind the rear row of seats. Of course, special attention should be paid to safety here. For example, you can seal the bottom under the tank using iron sheets. Be sure to note that the tank must have a neck and a capacity of 45 liters. For convenience, an additional internal trunk can be placed above it.
We will do the glazing only after all other body work has been completed. The glass of our UAZ all-terrain vehicles should be secured in a special rubber frame, which will be more reliable in extreme situations. It is for safety reasons that we advised you to use triplex glass.
Their main quality and advantage is that they do not crumble into fragments during an accident. In this way, we can protect our homemade products from some force majeure events.
UUUAZ
Craftsmen from Kurgan made a version of the UAZ SUV that has grown on all fronts, which was called “UUUAZ”. It is based on a frame from a GAZ-66 truck, on which a GAZ-53 engine and an overcooked body from a UAZ Hunter were installed.
But appearance is not the main thing in an SUV, because it is equipped with an excellent set of options, including a satellite alarm, TV, rear camera and even a night vision system. Apparently, the only copy was released in 2007.
Preparing for work
Before assembly, you need to prepare a set of plumbing tools and all the necessary units. If the equipment will not be used in difficult conditions, then it is enough to install small wheels - 13 inches. Wheels with a larger diameter are often installed in the rear and smaller ones on the front axle.
For assembly you need to prepare the following components:
- Transmission driven by UAZ.
- Clutch mechanism assembled with basket, disc and release bearing.
- Extension cord for connecting the gearbox.
- Engine flywheel.
- The channel is the right size.
- From the pipes you need to weld spars, cross members and a support for attaching the power unit.
- 4 supports for mounting a homemade cabin.
You will also need forged steel sheets to make a plate and a car mounting bracket.
SKB-600 / SKB-900
CJSC SKB "Gazstroymashina" from Tyumen builds two-axle SUVs SKB-600 and three-axle SKB-900 using components and assemblies of UAZ and GAZ vehicles. It is based on a UAZ frame, which rests on axles from the GAZ-66.
A two-axle vehicle can transport 600 kg of cargo on hard surfaces, and a three-axle vehicle can transport 900 kg. Tires - "Arctictrans" with dimensions 1300*700-21. Interestingly, instead of a UAZ body, a GAZelle Next body can be installed, even in the all-metal van version.
