External tuning
An example of a car for which tuning is more a necessity than a desire to follow fashion is the UAZ 469. Let’s pay attention to the history of the car.
Initially, the UAZ 469 was required for the Soviet army and farm work. Today, it is difficult to find an alternative to the UAZ, since the design and strength characteristics remain high. Later the car was named UAZ Hunter.
Thanks to the highest parameters, UAZ tuning is generally not required, so those who want to experiment should turn to external tuning. What to change in the car?
- Replace wheels with a diameter of 31-33. Depending on where the car is used, tires are selected. Complete with stylish wheels, the car will not look aggressive, and the car’s transmission will be preserved, which will protect you while driving.
- To tune the UAZ 469 with your own hands for off-road use, you will need to raise the body, which is achieved by backlash. To install large wheels, you need to install arch extensions on the UAZ or trim them - this will prevent scratches on the wings. Lifting the UAZ will increase the vehicle's cross-country ability.
Complete change in appearance
- Tuning the suspension will be accomplished by installing a pair of shock absorbers on the wheels and equipping the springs with leaves.
- The disadvantage of the UAZ equipment is that it does not have locking differentials, therefore the tuning of the UAZ 469 requires the installation of self-locking differentials.

Wheel improvement
At the first stage of tuning the UAZ Hunter for off-road use, it is reasonable to replace the wheels. This operation is not cheap, but without it further alterations do not make much sense. As an alternative to the original wheels, enlarged mud counterparts are used. In the standard version, the car in question is equipped with “shoes” type 235/70 R-16. In addition, a larger wheel diameter will increase ground clearance and cross-country ability, making it possible to safely overcome the most difficult areas. It is best to take 35-inch tires (315/75).
The rubber modification and tread pattern completely depend on the intended use of the future all-terrain vehicle. It is advisable to install smaller disks (for example, 15 inches), due to their availability and low cost. The cost of this stage depends on the tire and wheel manufacturer.
Internal tuning
It is necessary to begin the internal alteration by completely dismantling the insides of the car. Since we are considering off-road tuning of a UAZ, the first task is to install the sunroof in the roof of the car. To do this, you need to cut a rectangular passage and insert a hunting hatch there, which can be tilted completely or opened for ventilation. To prevent condensation from forming, the hatch is lined with aluminum and insulated.
The floor needs improvement, so it is laid with vibration insulation and sound insulation, and finally upholstered with aluminum. Don't forget about sealing.

It is worth noting that completely replacing the interior is not easy, because tuning a UAZ Patriot for the city does not require major intervention in the interior. But replacing the steering wheel is a good idea; install a more comfortable one made of leather. Install tinted double glazing. New instruments and a fashionable steering wheel
Technical tuning: engine
There are several ways to modernize a car engine, and here are some of them:
- Tuning the UAZ engine is a necessity since it is carburetor. An ideal replacement would be the injection ZMZ-409.10. The characteristics of this engine allow you to travel long distances. Volume 2.7 liters, power 128 hp, which means a reduction in fuel consumption: from 15-17 liters per 100 km with a standard engine to 11-12 with an injection engine.
- If the goal of tuning is to reduce fuel consumption, then it is recommended to disable the front axle. Please note that if you turn it off, you will lose the ability to travel off-road. But do-it-yourself modification of the UAZ 469 does not end there; to reduce consumption, you can equip it with a gas-cylinder operating mode.
- To reduce the cost and time spent on the engine, it is recommended to install a diesel engine, which is common in UAZs. It has a power of 90 hp, enough for off-road travel.
Suspension change
If we consider UAZ 469 tuning, we can take into account that it is possible to improve comfort while driving by changing the suspension. Despite the good cross-country ability and reliability of the domestic version, the Australian company DOBINSONS produces the best kit specifically for the UAZ.
When replacing the factory set of springs with a set from an Australian company, you can count on the following:
1. Suspension play and additional 5 centimeters of clearance. 2. The car's behavior on the road is significantly improved. 3. Increases comfort while driving.
This change is quite expensive and time consuming, but it is worth it.
Direct-flow muffler for UAZ 469
The similarity between a direct-flow muffler and a resonator is obvious, but its difference lies in the presence of a layer. To eliminate sounds, the UAZ muffler is filled with mineral wool, which is located throughout the entire perimeter of the part; it is limited by a special mesh, due to which the fibers absorb sound without flying out of the muffler.
When choosing a muffler for an UAZ, pay attention to the thickness of the wool layer and its quality. The number of holes and diameter size affect the volume of sounds. The reason a car roars is that the resonator does not absorb low frequency sounds.
The advantage of a direct-flow muffler is low gas resistance. But do not forget that installing this part will not increase the power.
Similar to the modernization of the UAZ 469, any model is remade, for example, tuning the UAZ Farmer. Transforming your car will improve it both externally and internally.
The practical and reliable UAZ 469B, which became freely sold only after 1991, suits everyone. A lover of comfortable active recreation will not even think about buying a UAZ 469, simply because this car is not designed for comfort. What is a snorkel?
An important detail of traveling over rough terrain is the installation of a snorkel, an air intake pipe brought to the roof level of the UAZ 69. Tuning prevents water from entering the engine when driving through various water obstacles. You can independently assemble such a device from the following materials:
- air filter mounting clamp;
- air filter UAZ 3160 (“barrel”);
- corners (rubber) for Volga vehicles (3 pcs.);
- corrugations UAZ 3160 (2 pcs.);
- clamp 70-75 mm (2 pcs.), 70-80 mm (9 pcs.), 25-30 mm (2 pcs.);
- oil pump hose (longer than standard);
- aluminum tube with a diameter of 25 mm, 35 mm, 70 mm, 75 mm.
The assembly order is as follows. The corner is attached to the end of the pipe with a clamp. The pipe is attached to the windshield frame with clamps. A corner is passed through the hole in the wing into the cabin, attaching a piece of tube to it. A corrugation is secured to the free end, leading it under the hood and strengthening another piece of tube in it. The free end of this part is corrugated and connected to the “barrel” of the air filter, mounted on the wing inside the hood.
A corrugation and a piece of tube are attached to the outlet of the “barrel”, into the free end of which a fitting from the unnecessary “barrel” is cut under the hose for the oil pump and distributor. The extended oil pump hose is connected to the carburetor outlet with an angle on clamps. The tube connections are sealed with silicone sealant.
When tuning UAZ 69, UAZ 2206, UAZ loaf, UAZ farmer with your own hands, you should keep in mind that any changes not provided for by the design of the car require registration with the traffic police. Otherwise, if you travel in a tuned UAZ, the car owner may have serious problems with the law.
A fairly popular area for refining and improving the performance of the 469 UAZ and its modifications (3151, Hunter) is internal tuning (refinement and changes in the interior).
At the same time, work of varying degrees of complexity is carried out. Starting from a simple replacement of gearshift knobs and ending with a complete replacement of seats and reupholstery of all interior elements (door cards, ceiling).

In the warm season, the UAZ can still be used as a fan car, and streams in the interior leaks can be perceived as exotic. But not in winter. The car’s already weak stove is simply not designed for full heating, so it will have to be modified first.
Salon for hunting and fishing
Hunting can be different, just like fishing. If the car is already sufficiently prepared on the technical side, then you can adapt the trunk for transporting equipment. Hunters often make holders for equipment and weapons in the trunk to gain quick access to it. In general, securing a load is a serious matter and needs to be approached thoughtfully. Depending on road conditions and the weight of the load, it can be fixed in different places, but it is advisable to place the center of gravity as low as possible.
Also a useful addition would be a hatch, which can also be cut into the roof, pre-insulated so that condensation does not settle. Just as in the case of aluminum floor coverings, all joints are carefully sealed. Since the interior of the UAZ is quite high, you can make several shelves with your own hands. In the standard cabin there are no places to store maps, navigation items, or even cigarettes. Therefore, a small console above the windshield will not hurt.
More comfort
469 UAZ already from the factory had a spring front suspension and disc brakes on the front axle, but this was not enough for comfortable driving on rough roads, so the rear suspension was also made with springs. The conversion kit, specially designed for UAZ , consists of standard spare parts from the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant: Panhard rod and trailing arms. It was only necessary to weld the brackets for their fastening and the platforms for the rear springs. At the same time, they put back disc brakes. By the way, both the springs and shock absorbers are Ironman, with their help it was possible to raise the body by seven centimeters and at the same time avoid “body lift”. I also had to work on the front axle: the original plastic pin inserts are not reliable, if you “trot” on broken roads, they usually break after a few thousand kilometers. The solution to this problem was invented a long time ago: installing bearings in pivot units. The “hubs” were replaced with manual ones from AVM.
Seats and instruments UAZ 469
There are no special complaints about the car’s instruments, they show it as best they can, and the panel can be sheathed with stainless steel. It will harmonize with the aluminum floor, although the effect is purely decorative. They also often install seats from cars that are more suitable for life; some interiors fit almost without modification at all, such as the interior from a Honda CRV. So, if you completely fold the seat, you get a huge loading volume.
Even with a very small investment, you can put the interior of the UAZ 469 in relative order by doing all the work yourself. The main thing is not to be lazy, and the UAZ will transform into a comfortable SUV for long raids. Happy roads and easy off-roading to everyone!
