Spring suspension repair

Disassembling springs

Before disassembling, clean the springs from dirt and determine their technical condition. If all parts are suitable for further use, then it is necessary to check the spring deflection in a free state. To do this, stretch a thread or thin wire along the end curves of the cups of the upper main sheet along the spring and measure the distance to the thread from the upper surface of the first main sheet at the center bolt, which should be:

  • for the front spring no less than 140 mm;
  • for rear spring no less than 160 mm.

: — The difference in the deflection dimensions of springs of the same name installed on a vehicle should not exceed 10 mm. — If, as a result of the preliminary inspection, damage is found, the spring must be disassembled in the following order:

1. Clamp the spring in a vice in the immediate vicinity of the center bolt.

2. Unscrew the nuts of the clamp bolts, remove the bolts and remove the spacers.

3. Unscrew the nut of the center bolt and carefully release the vice (the sheets in the tightened spring are in a tense state), disassemble the spring.

4. Wash all spring leaves with Nefras, wipe and inspect for cracks. Broken or cracked sheets must be replaced.

5. Unfasten the loose rivets of the clamps and cups.

Spring assembly

1. Select the required set of sheets. Lubricate the surfaces of the sheets with graphite lubricant.
