Types of snow blowers used to clear snow on MTZ tractors

The Belarus tractor, being an indispensable piece of equipment in the municipal sector, is widely used in the maintenance of roads, settlements, industrial and other areas. The versatility of the tractor makes it possible to attach various special equipment, thereby ensuring maximum loading of the machine and its efficient use. The use of MTZ with a set of mounted equipment significantly reduces the cost of work performed and eliminates the need to have and maintain a huge fleet of special machines. To perform work in winter, including clearing snow drifts and snow removal, for the MTZ tractor, there is a number of mounted equipment.

Snow blowers at MTZ

Snow blowers at MTZ are a special type of attachment designed to quickly and with maximum effect clear roadways, squares, home areas (yards of high-rise buildings), country roads, etc. from snow drifts. One of the most popular tractors in our latitudes is MTZ-Belarus in all its variety of models, so it is not surprising that snow removal equipment was specially designed for these tractors, with all their features (PTO, hydraulic pump, etc.).

Rotary snow blowers for the MTZ 82 tractor

Snow plow based on MTZ

The dump shovel, aggregated with MTZ tractor machines, is used for:

  • cleaning all types of snow masses;
  • clearing areas of debris;
  • ground work (leveling, leveling, digging/burying trenches, etc.).

Depending on their main purpose, dumps for MTZ are divided into the following types:

  1. Municipal dump (there is a model with a hydraulic rotating shovel).
  2. Bulldozer blade (with and without hydraulic rotation).
  3. Leveling grader shovel.
  4. Snow dump.

All of the listed models are capable of clearing snow, but bulldozer units are more powerful, their design is reinforced, since the original purpose of the hitch is excavation work. The design of the shovel can be different (depending on its intended purpose). The blade can be mounted both in the front part of the MTZ tractor (a hydraulic pump is connected) and in the rear through the power take-off shaft (PTO). The first option is considered more convenient, since the tractor operator does not have to sit with his body turned backwards while performing snow clearing work.

Universal blade (shovel) (hydroficated) for MTZ tractor

We list the most popular models of mounted snow plows mounted on Belarus and MTZ tractors:

  1. OS-1 snow blade.
  2. Utility shovel OS-1G.
  3. Bulldozer blade OBN-1P of mounted type.
  4. KO-6 municipal hydro-rotating snow clearing blade.
  5. Grader leveling blade OP-2500.
  6. Bulldozer blades for utilities:
      hydraulic rotary OK-2.2 G;
  7. mechanical OK-2,2.
  8. Bulldozer blade OG-02 is hydraulically rotating.
  9. Hydro-rotating shovel MKO-4GP based on MTZ-320 for public utilities.
  10. Bulldozer blade OB-2 (for “Belorus”).
  11. SV-2.5 snow plow.

Let's study the characteristics of the listed attachments:

OS-1 snow blade

This equipment is aggregated with MTZ and Belarus tractor machines, and is used mainly for clearing roads and territories from snow, sand, and light debris. A special feature of this dump shovel is a rubber plate worn instead of a knife, which allows you to gently clean the surface being treated without damaging the road surface. The position of the moldboard shovel (up and down) is controlled directly from the tractor cabin with the participation of the MTZ hydraulic system, the rotation of the shovel is done mechanically manually.

Utility dump OS-1G

This municipal attachment is completely under the control of the hydraulic system of tractors (MTZ, YuMZ), which means that the operator can not only raise or lower the shovel without leaving the cab, but also control the rotation angle of up to 30 °. The blade blade, like the previous modification, is made of high-strength technical rubber with a cord that allows you to gently clear snow masses without damaging the pavement.

OBN-1P bulldozer blade

This attachment can be used both for clearing large areas of snow and small pieces of debris, and as a leveler. The shovel comes with two blades:

  • rubber for gentle cleaning of surfaces from snow;
  • steel (steel 45), effective for earthmoving and waste removal work.

The blade is under full hydraulic control of the tractor machine; the operator can manipulate the shovel without leaving the cab. The kit also includes a special inclined spacer that allows you to change the angle of rotation of the snow removal attachment. If you do not use this spacer, the blade will operate as a straight blade rather than a hydraulic rotary one.

Rotary snow blowers

Rotary auger snow blowers are designed for emergency clearing of large areas from snow debris more than 50 cm high. Such attachments (thanks to rotating augers that cut the snow mass and direct it to the rotor and the rotating rotor, delivering it to the outlet chute under pressure) can easily cope with freshly fallen snow , and a whitened mass, snow crumbs. They are combined with MTZ tractors with a power of 150 hp or more. pp., equipped with a power take-off shaft and hydraulic cylinders.

The rotation of the augers is carried out through the rear PTO, by transmitting torque through the cardan shafts and the intermediate support. The snow throw range is adjusted from the operator's cabin to a distance of 2.5 to 20 m to the side of the road or into the body of the hauling vehicle. We list the most popular and sought-after modifications of snow-removing machines connected to MTZ and Belarus tractors:

  1. Snow blower SShR-2.0P.
  2. Quick-release snow blower Su 2.5 OM.
  3. Mounted rotary milling snow removal machine SU 2.1.
  4. Milling snow blower FRS -2.6.
  5. Snow plow FRS-200 based on the Belarus tractor and MTZ-82.

Screw-rotor and milling-rotor modifications are largely similar in their design and method of operation, however, if in the first case the working body is a rotating auger, then in the second case, cutters are fixed to the shaft, which have a more closed and protected design, less susceptible to deformation and breakage upon contact with a foreign object.

Let's go through the models of tractor snow blowers listed above:

Snow blower SShR-2.0P

The nozzle is effective in our climate with heavy snowfalls, snow and transport routes that need to be promptly cleared to avoid traffic jams. This snow blower is aggregated with the following modifications of MTZ tractors:

  • MTZ-80/82;
  • MTZ-892;
  • MTZ-920.

The working body is a rotating auger, cutting the snow masses and feeding them to the rotor, which crushes and transports the snow to the discharge hole. The snow removal bucket is controlled from the tractor's hydraulic system; torque is transmitted to the auger-rotor from the rear power take-off shaft.

Rotary snow blowers

Rotary machines, along with blades, are one of the two main types of snow removal equipment. Rotary snow blowers allow you to throw snow into free areas away from the road being cleared, so the snow does not collect in windrows at the edges of the road, as when clearing with plows, and there is no need to remove it later.

Types of rotary snow blowers

A snow blower is a self-propelled machine or attachment (can be installed on the front or rear of a carrier vehicle) that has auger, rotary or milling units designed to remove snow. GOST 15840-70 defines several types of such equipment.

A rotary snow blower is a unit, the main part of the working part of which is a bladed throwing apparatus (rotor) for capturing and throwing snow to the side. A disk rotor , made in the form of a disk with blades located on it, or a diskless rotor , made in the form of a hub with blades mounted on it, can be used The ejection range and direction are adjusted using a chute , which can be rotated in different directions. The snow plow can be equipped with a ripper - a device in the form of a blade shaft auger or propeller, installed in front of the working body in order to more effectively develop dense snow and high snow faces.

A rotary plow snow blower is a unit with a working body consisting of a plow with one or two rotors built into it. The plow collects snow and feeds it to the rotor blades, which throw the snow mass through the discharge pipe and chute to the side.

A rotary auger snow blower is a unit with a working body consisting of one or two rotors and a screw feeder, made in the form of one or several horizontal augers with right and left winding each, located one above the other. Rotating augers feed the snow mass to the rotor, which with great force through the deflector throws the snow in the desired direction to the side. A feeder is a part of the working body of an auger-rotor and milling-rotor snow blower, designed to separate snow masses from the massif being developed, transport and throw them into the rotor (rotors). The feeder auger is a screw continuous feeder conveyor designed to cut snow from the massif and transport it to the rotor(s).

A milling rotary snow blower is a unit with a working body consisting of one or two rotors and a milling feeder, made in the form of cutters with right and left winding, located on the same horizontal axis. The feeder cutter is a screw-type drumless belt working part of the feeder, designed for cutting snow from the massif and transporting it to the rotor (rotors).

The strength of snow in embankments on city roads varies. Therefore, the most important requirement for the working body for rotary snow blowers used in urban conditions is the ability to develop high-strength snow. This requirement is most fully met by a working body of the milling-rotor type, in which the development of snow shafts is ensured by a cutter with a horizontal axis of rotation, and the throwing of snow is ensured by a rotor. Milling and rotary milling machines can remove compacted snow more than 1 m high due to the design of the cutting element.

ISKUB LLC is the official representative of the Italian company DULEVO International, which is one of the world's leading manufacturers of equipment for all-season cleaning of highways, city streets and related infrastructure. The core of the line is the 5000 Evolution, 200 Quattro and 850 Mini. All these machines are equipped for operation in winter conditions, including attachments - snow dumps and reagent distributors. The rotary steel dumps are fully hydraulic and have a working edge width from 1600 to 2600 m, depending on the model. Simultaneously with the blade and spreader, the 200 Quattro and 5000 Evolution models can perform snow removal with standard brush equipment. An important advantage over analogues is the combined vacuum-mechanical system with a high-speed vertical conveyor, which allows these machines to collect a significant amount of snow mass. The collected snow and melt water are transported in the machine's hopper to the unloading site. Dulevo sweepers can be successfully used on highways and are indispensable for clearing snow from sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, parking lots, public transport stops - in other words, where compactness, high performance and maneuverability are required. The all-season nature of Dulevo equipment makes it a universal tool at any time of the year, and also increases the operational flexibility of the harvesting machine fleet and allows seasonal downtime to be reduced to a minimum.

Design features of rotary snow blowers

The drive of the working body of the snow plow is made from the PTO of the base chassis engine. Autonomous drives are used much less frequently. Most self-contained rotary snow blowers on the market are equipped with engines that run on gas fuel or gasoline and diesel fuel. However, electric snow blowers are quickly gaining popularity. The choice depends on the specific circumstances. In most cases, gas or gasoline units develop more power, are stronger, and can handle heavier snow. However, electric snow blowers are also becoming more powerful every year. However, in general, if you plan to remove a lot of snow, it is better to choose a gas or gasoline snow blower.

If you purchase a rotary snow blower with a low-power engine, you can save on the purchase price and fuel, but a weak unit may not do a good job of clearing snow. The higher the average snow thickness, the more powerful the snow blower's engine should be. When choosing an engine brand, it is recommended to make sure that this brand has a good reputation and there have been no cases of defects or failures.

The performance of a rotary snow blower when clearing snow depends not only on the engine power, but also on the type of working parts - combined or separate .

In working bodies of a combined type, the development of snow and its throwing to the side is performed by the same working body - a high-speed rotor equipped with two or more plastic blades. A combined snow blower is recommended to be used only if the snow cover is thin and if the snow is light and dry, since it usually has low productivity.

In contrast, the separate-type working body consists of two components: a cutter or auger develops the snow and feeds it to the rotor, which discards the snow. Separate type snow blowers are produced with a power ranging from several kilowatts to very powerful machines of 1000 kW. The latter are used for clearing highways, airports and loading snow from shafts into dump trucks; they are capable of throwing snow much further. The auger or cutter is secured to the shaft with a safety pin, and if its rotation is impeded by a block of ice or stone, the pin is cut off, thus protecting the auger and cutter from destruction.

Safety

Every winter, the Ministry of Health records thousands of accidents related to the operation of rotary snow blowers. Most often, these cases are associated with the accumulation and compaction of snow on the auger, as a result of which great resistance is created to the rotation of the auger and rotor. It is not uncommon for snow blower operators to try to “push” accumulated snow on the auger by hand. As a result, a loose auger may suddenly begin to rotate with great speed and force, injuring the operator's hand and fingers. To avoid accidents, you must first turn off the engine, disconnect the coupling connecting the engine to the auger, and only then clear the blockage with a long stick or other similar object.

Most modern rotary snow blowers are equipped with a safety system that eliminates the possibility of such accidents. This is an electrical or mechanical switch (lever) that prevents the drive from turning the auger unless the operator is seated. In some countries, the law requires the installation of such systems on all snow blowers.

Summary

Rotary snow blowers are usually highly specialized machines, but some models have a removable working element, in place of which other tools, such as a rotating sweeper or tiller, can be installed. The simple design of rotary snow blowers allows the driver to easily control snow removal equipment and regulate its performance from the tractor cab.

Blade or rotor?

Rotary snow blower or plow – which to choose? The answer depends on the type of work the unit needs to do and what the owner wants. Can snow be stored in banks or does it need to be scattered over free areas?

We are all familiar with the huge piles of snow that accumulate on lawns, supermarket parking lots and other “suitable” places during snowy winters. Some of these piles are so large that they melt almost before the May holidays. These heaps sometimes cause great inconvenience. Firstly, if the pile lies on the edge of the parking lot, it takes up valuable free space, and secondly, during thaws on a sunny day, the snow actively melts, and at night the water freezes, and a dangerous ice crust appears on the roadway.

If the snowplow is equipped with a snow blade, then the operator has no choice - he has to shovel the snow to be removed somewhere. But a rotary snow blower, thanks to the ability to adjust the position of the chute, can throw snow onto the lawn at a sufficient distance from the roadway. Thus, no piles are formed. The snow will also melt away from the roadway, and the water will not freeze into a dangerous crust.

And yet, despite the snow piles or piles that form as a result of the snow plow, it is a useful attachment. Otherwise, dumps would not be used so widely. A snow plow can move huge amounts of snow, clearing large areas in a short time. It is successfully used for removing snow from streets and areas adjacent to buildings.

However, on the asphalt surface of streets and parking lots, on lawns there are always “traces of winter” - deep scratches from steel snow plows. You can't blame snowplow operators for this - they have a difficult job, they have to manage to avoid hitting curbs, lawns and other obstacles hidden under a layer of snow. But a rotary snow blower can bypass most of these obstacles without damaging them. A skid steer loader with snow blower can travel straight across sidewalks and park paths, get into tight spaces, and operate without damaging pavement or lawns.

Utility brush

Municipal brushes are used by city services all year round: in winter - for snow removal, in the rest of the period - as a sweeper for garbage collection. Let's consider three popular models of this attachment, often found on our streets:

  1. Municipal road brush ShchD-01 for MTZ.
  2. Reinforced brush MK-2.0 at MTZ.
  3. Road brush MK-454 for MTZ municipal.

Let's briefly look at their characteristics:

Preparing the MTZ tractor for snow removal

Coupling the MTZ 82(80) tractor with snow removal machines involves the use of additional equipment to drive the active parts of the mounted equipment, ensure the operating speed of the unit and attach the equipment.

If it is necessary to transfer torque from the rear PTO to the front linkage, an additional set of equipment is used, consisting of a gearbox, cardan shafts, intermediate supports and a number of fastening parts. To ensure speeds below 1.9 km/h, a speed reducer is used, which is attached to the left hatch of the tractor gearbox housing. The equipment of the NU-2 front linkage with the SA-1 automatic coupler ensures comfortable hanging and reliable fastening of the equipment in front of the tractor. Using high-pressure hydraulic hoses equipped with breakaway couplings, provide a convenient connection of the tractor’s hydraulic system to the hydraulic units of mounted snow removal equipment.
