replacing the starter cord of a Shtil 180 chainsaw with easy starting

Typical breakdowns and repairs of a chainsaw starter

The appearance of various starter malfunctions leads to the inability to start the chainsaw. The most common starter failures include:

  • The starter pulley has completely burst or has cracks;
  • The spring burst;
  • The starter cable is broken.

To fix each of these faults with your own hands, you will need certain tools. You must have a set of screwdrivers and a spare cable with you. You need to remove and inspect the starter for a chainsaw in the following order:

  1. To find the cause of the breakdown, the starter from the chainsaw will need to be removed. To do this, you need to unscrew the screws with a screwdriver that hold the protective cover with the starter attached to it;
  2. After removing the cover, you must carefully unscrew the screw that secures the starter to the protective cover;
  3. Then you need to try to start the starter smoothly - to do this, remove the spring and clamps from it;
  4. Next, the reel with cable is removed from the starter for inspection.

As a result of the inspection, you may discover a number of typical faults. These include:

  • Various damage to the pulley in the form of breaks or cracks, mainly in the rear part of the part - they interfere with the normal operation of the entire starter;
  • Damage to the starter spring for easy starting - in such cases, not only the spring itself may be faulty, but also the place where it is fixed - this is the most vulnerable part of the spring;
  • The starter flywheel pawl is damaged.

Basic malfunctions of the trimmer starter

It is not difficult to determine the cause of the breakdown of the trigger device. There are several main options:

  • broken cord (rope);
  • when the spring breaks or becomes disengaged.

These parts are shown in the photo below.

It may happen that the starter mechanism is accidentally broken. The consequences will be disastrous if a broken rope is wound around the flywheel of a running internal combustion engine: then the spring will burst and the pulley will break. But such cases when a complete replacement of the starter assembly is required are extremely rare. In most cases, to repair the mechanism, it is enough to install a new spring or replace the cord.

Chainsaw starter device

The principle of operation of a starter for a chainsaw is as follows. A handle is installed in a groove in the housing, through which a cable is passed. If the handle is sharply raised, the cable is pulled out and engages the drum of the ratcheting mechanism, which transmits the movement to the drum with splines provided on the shaft. In this case, the crankshaft makes several revolutions, and the working mixture in the space between the piston and the cylinder head is compressed. Accordingly, when the handle is lowered, contact between the ratchet and the splines is lost and the shaft stops.

As engine volume increases, the required amount of fuel-air mixture required for its subsequent ignition also increases, so the number of pulls on the starting cable for high-power saws increases. Therefore, in order to speed up the return of the drum, involuntary return springs made of steel with high elastic properties are used.

Making it easier to start a chainsaw is done in the following ways:

How to install a spring on a chainsaw starter?

Fitting the starter spring into the correct groove is not an easy task even for an experienced user. First, the spring should be twisted to its previous diameter and installed in the cavity of the drum hub. The outer end of the spring is fixed by the limiting protrusion, and the outer end should be positioned opposite the hole in the lock using a screwdriver. Using a screwdriver, align the loop at the inner end of the spring with the hole, after which the disk is lowered. By rotating the disk, check whether the ratchet pawl is in place. Next, the ratchet itself is assembled.

After installing the spring, it is necessary to adjust its tension. To do this, a cable is inserted into a groove on the circumference, and a return spring is twisted around it. After removing the slack, it is better to wind the spring an additional few turns to ensure the required tension on the part.

How to set the ignition

You need to turn on the ignition on the chainsaw. Ignition adjustment is carried out as follows:

  • unscrew the spark plug and evaluate its appearance;
  • specify the distance between the magnets and the coil (up to 0.2 mm);
  • check the spark.

Pouring a candle

If you notice that the spark plug on your STIHL chainsaw is flooding, then there may be a malfunction in the fuel system. The engine must run on a mixture of gasoline and oil. If the mixture is lean, then the power decreases, the cylinder overheats and the saw systems wear out. A wet spark plug on a STIHL chainsaw occurs due to an imbalance in the fuel mixture. Lack of air in the mixture prevents the emulsion from burning properly.

Using low-quality gasoline can cause engine wear.

Oiling of the spark plug also causes the use of oil for 4-stroke engines and wear of the pistons. If such a malfunction occurs, you need to remove the gas tank cap and adjust the fuel supply. The air intake should be in good condition. A clogged filter must be blown out with air, or better yet, replaced. How to clean the filters is described in the operating instructions for the chainsaw.

The quality of the mixture can be determined using a spark plug insulator. If a brown color appears on it, this means that the quality of the mixture is normal. White color or soot indicates a poor or over-enriched mixture.

The cause of oiling is the candle. Interruptions in spark formation are observed when the gap is set incorrectly. The repair and operating instructions for the device give the distance between the spark plug contacts. If you do not have such data, then you can set 0.7-1 mm.

If the gap is smaller, then the efficiency of ignition of the mixture decreases; if it is larger, then interruptions in spark formation occur. To eliminate over-enrichment of the mixture, the engine is purged. In this case, you need to remove the spark plug and turn the crankshaft several times with a manual starter.

Replacing the piston

Let's look at how to diagnose and replace the piston group. It is necessary to check the condition of the cylinder and the degree of wear of the piston. After dismantling the engine, unscrew the pan and remove the crankshaft and piston from the cylinder. Unscrew the piston pin stoppers. If the piston is faulty, it must be replaced. The retaining rings are fixed with the cut down. Before installing the piston group into the cylinder, lubricate the piston with oil. Before installing the crankcase, degrease its surface and apply sealant.

Replacing oil seals

How to repair a STIHL 180 chainsaw if the seals need to be replaced? You need to disassemble the motor, why first you will need to remove it from the chainsaw. Removal is done according to the method described in Fri: “The control button of the STIHL 180 chainsaw is broken - how to fix it.”

READ Electric saw Interskol pc 16 2000t what chain

When the engine is removed, the 4 screws securing the engine tray are unscrewed, after which it is removed. This way, by removing the pan, we get access to the seals and bearings of the crankshaft.

Starter repair Stihl MS 180 (complete)

The fundamental point when replacing oil seals is reversible installation and sealing of the pan.

To carry it out perfectly, you need to clean and degrease the pan and its installation location on the saw cylinder, and then coat it with sealant and install the pan, tightening it crosswise to the required force.

When installing the pan, it is important not to confuse the placement and install it in such a way that the casting to hold the oil pump housing is placed in the opposite direction from the flywheel; otherwise, it will be unrealistic to place the engine back into the saw body.

Assembling the chainsaw after repair is carried out in the reverse order.

The STIHL MS 180 is a fairly reliable saw, but if used incorrectly, using low-quality lubricants or due to operator negligence, malfunctions may occur. To repair a saw with your own hands, you must have certain knowledge and a special tool, without which repairs are impossible. Do not forget that the STIHL 180 chainsaw is a technically complex tool and its maintenance is best carried out at a service center.

The STIHL MS 180 chainsaw is considered one of the most reliable models in its sector. Unfortunately, technology is technology, and when malfunctions appear, the elimination of which may require repair of the STIHL ms 180.

Ignition system

  • The engine will not start;
  • the engine starts but stalls almost immediately;
  • the engine is unstable;
  • Do not develop full power or stall.

You should start your ignition system test by checking the spark plug. The spark plug must be clean, free of carbon deposits and not filled with fuel mixture. The gap between the electrodes should be 0.5-0.65 mm. The carbon from the spark plug can be cleaned with a sharp awl; the electrodes should be cleaned with fine sandpaper.

Starting problems can also occur due to the spark plug seal being damaged or worn out. We then test for spark. To do this, you need to connect a high-voltage wire and, holding a spark plug with pliers with insulated handles, apply it with a thread to the cylinder. By pulling the starter cord, we check for the presence of a spark. If there is no spark, then the spark plug must be replaced. If there is no spark and no new spark, then the problem should be looked for in the high-voltage wire.

General breakdowns of Stihl 180

Common problems with Stihl chainsaws include:

  • Starter cable break;
  • Put on the drive sprocket;
  • Leaks in the chain oil supply system;
  • Worn oil pump worm gear;
  • Air passes through the seals into the crankcase;
  • There is no spark plug;
  • Lack of fuel supply in case of malfunctions in the carburetor (we will not dwell on them, since repairing and adjusting the carburetor of a chainsaw is a fairly broad issue and will be discussed in a separate article);
  • Intrusion into the eyes of the seat under the engine control lever.

Now let's look at the faults in more detail and start with repairing the oil pump.

Malfunction of the fuel supply system in the chainsaw

If everything is in order with the ignition system, then we go further and check the fuel supply system of the chainsaw.

Failure of the fuel supply system is usually associated with one of the following circumstances:

  • fuel filter contamination;
  • the hole in the tank lid is clogged;
  • shortage of the amount of incoming fuel mixture.

We disconnect the fuel hose from the carburetor and see whether fuel flows out of it or not. If the fuel flows in a free stream, then everything is in order - the lid and filter are working properly. If the fuel mixture does not flow at all or flows very weakly, then clean the hole in the cover (breather) with a needle.

We remove the fuel filter through the filler hole using a hook (can be bent from a wire), together with the absorption hose. You must first empty the fuel tank. We disconnect the filter and clean it or replace it with a new one.

It is recommended to update the fuel filter every 3 months. As for the missing amount of fuel consistency flowing from the carburetor into the cylinder, the reason may lie in a violation of the ratio of fuel and air mixed in the carburetor. The main prerequisites are: clogged air filter, clogged carburetor channels or filter mesh.

Of course, when repairing chainsaws, it is necessary to clean the air filter, since it gets dirty quite quickly. This reduces the amount of air entering the carburetor. In this case, the fuel mixture at the outlet turns out to be excessively enriched.

A dirty filter must be removed very carefully so that the accumulated dirt does not fall off and get into the carburetor. The filter must be cleaned or washed in water and detergent. Then we dry it and put it back.

Calm 180 gap between coil and magnet

Chainsaw Shtil MS 180 is considered one of the most reliable models in its segment. But technology is technology, and sometimes malfunctions arise that may require stihl ms 180 repair to resolve.

You will learn more about repairing components by reading the article.

Is it possible to repair a saw with your own hands?

This is the very first question that arises before the owner of a Shtil 180 chainsaw, which for some reason has stopped functioning normally. There is no clear answer to this question. It would be correct to say: it is possible, but is it necessary? Repairing a chainsaw in a service center is of course more expensive than trying to fix problems yourself, but by using the services of specialists, you receive guarantees and confidence that the chainsaw will be properly configured and adjusted. In general, the choice is yours.

Another small nuance regarding the choice to repair it yourself or not is that in order to diagnose a chainsaw and its further disassembly and repair, you need to have some specific tools and certain knowledge of the design of the saw. Otherwise, you will not be able to even unscrew and remove the flywheel without damaging it.

When carrying out independent saw repairs, the aluminum fan blades located on the flywheel very often break off. This happens because during disassembly they do not use a special crankshaft stopper, but try to fix it by installing a screwdriver between the saw body and the flywheel blades, which leads to dire consequences. The flywheel nut has a serious tightening torque, and the blades are fragile and cannot withstand such force.

Another common problem. clogging the respite. Breather. it is a small hole in the gas bottle cap, you need to use a needle to clean it. An insufficient amount of fuel mixture may be due to a clogged air filter; in this case, air does not flow in the required volume; the fuel mixture turns out to be too rich, which leads to an unstable engine. To solve the problem, the filter must be removed, thoroughly washed, dried and replaced.

If these methods do not resolve the problem, the problem may be due to an incorrect carburetor setting. Adjust the carburetor using clean air and fuel filters. On most carburetors, adjustment is made using three special screws: maximum speed, minimum speed and constant speed. The maximum speed propeller is designated by the symbol H and controls the main jet. Screw L is designed to adjust the minimum speed and control the intermediate circuit. Screw S allows precise adjustment of idle speed.

Sometimes carburetors have two adjustment screws, which is done to simplify the configuration. Accurate information on setting up the carburetor must be obtained from the instruction manual, but it is better to entrust this operation to specialists, since this is a very complex and responsible job.

Removing and replacing the clutch on a chainsaw. Review, instructions

Chainsaws, for various reasons, need repairs from time to time. Of course, you can contact a service workshop or an experienced mechanic. However, many problems can be fixed at home with only a minimal set of skills and tools.

Answering the question of how to remove the clutch from a chainsaw, we note that this is not a difficult operation if you strictly adhere to the disassembly technology.

Owners of the tool may encounter certain difficulties if the chainsaw has been in use for a long time and the clutch parts have become stuck to each other.

However, even in this case, you can disassemble it yourself.

Clutch faults

Replacing the entire assembly
During operation, the chain slips.Clutch wearReplacing the unit

Reasons why clutches need to be disassembled:

  • Faulty or burst spring;
  • As a result of loads on the chainsaw and wear of parts, the spring left its place;
  • Chips on the clutch plate;
  • Wear of parts.

Clutch replacement

When replacing the clutch, we do not recommend using metal or plastic objects as a stopper. The former can scratch the cylinder, the latter can litter it.

Centrifugal clutch chainsaw

Disassembling the clutch:

  • We turn on the chain stop brake, remove the protective cover and dismantle the saw set;
  • We remove dirt, sawdust, dried grease, if any;
  • Remove the air filter and spark plug;
  • Using a spark plug wrench, unscrew the spark plug;
  • Rotating the crankshaft, bring the piston to the top point, then withdraw it by 6-9 mm;
  • Use a rope, 7-8 mm in diameter, to stop the piston in the upper position;
  • Use a special wrench to unscrew the nut on the clutch.

Most of the moving parts of a chainsaw have right-hand rotation. Therefore, the clutch nut has a left-hand thread. Remove the cover by turning the key clockwise. It is forbidden to carry out this operation with a hammer and chisel - you will knock off the edges!

  • Remove the cover and drive sprocket. We diagnose faults and evaluate wear of parts. We assess the condition of the needle bearing;
  • If necessary, we replace parts with new ones (most often the drive sprocket needs this);

Installation of the chainsaw clutch system is carried out in the reverse order, but you should pay attention to some features

Nuances when installing the clutch system:

On some chainsaw models there may be a washer between the drive sprocket and the clutch.

Pay attention to which side it faces the engine;. Some oil pump drives are equipped with a special spring (whisker), which is responsible for transmitting rotational motion from the drive sprocket to the oil pump

Video: How to Replace the Piston on a Stihl 180 Chainsaw

The great thing about the CPG on the Stihl MS 180 is that it has two compression rings, while almost all of its main competitors only have one. According to the manufacturer, installing a pair of rings can better stabilize the piston during operation, increase its cooling and increase compression in the engine, thereby improving starting.

How to replace a piston with a Stihl 180 chainsaw

If you need to replace the old piston and install a new one, you need to know how to do it correctly and follow a certain algorithm. You also need to have a small slotted screwdriver, a special Stihl combination wrench, an electric screwdriver, a hammer, a soft drift, a compressor, and a Stihl piston stopper.

When replacing a piston or piston group, the chainsaw should be as clean as possible from contamination. Further work is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  1. The top cover is removed from the saw and the spark plug is lit.
  2. Remove the side cover.
  3. Using an electric screwdriver, the plugs are removed from the shock absorbers of the chainsaw, after which their handle is disconnected from the body.
  4. Next, remove the drive sprocket and starter.
  5. Install the piston stopper into the spark plug hole and loosen the flywheel retaining nut and clutch.
  6. Remove the flywheel, clutch gears and oil pump behind the clutch.
  7. Remove the two screws that secure the carburetor and air filter. Remove the filter, engine control lever and Stihl carburetor.
  8. Remove the ignition coil and muffler.

After completing all these operations, clean the file from dirt again, then turn it over and unscrew the four screws that secure the engine to the body of the chainsaw. After unscrewing the screws, the engine is separated from the housing and cleaned again.

With the engine removed, the pan is unwound and the pan is lifted, after which the piston and crankshaft assembly is removed from the engine.

When removing the piston from the cylinder, remember that it is located relative to the cylinder.

The piston pin snap rings are then removed with a small screwdriver and the crankshaft is disconnected from the piston.

In case you only need to replace the piston, you can install it on the crankshaft and then install the piston pin circlips, positioning them so that the circlip breaking point points downwards. This eliminates the possibility of the locking ring accidentally popping while the engine is running (according to the Stihl manufacturer's instructions). After this, the compression rings are installed, the cylinder is lubricated with engine oil and the engine is assembled.

Installation of the piston into the cylinder must be done as carefully as possible, since the clamping rings are fragile and easily break.

The crankcase is installed on the engine, sealant is used as a gasket, and then the four machine screws are attached and tightened in a crisscross pattern. Then the engine is installed on the chainsaw body. Subsequent assembly is performed using a reverse disassembly algorithm.

Why does my Stihl chainsaw not start after replacing the piston?

If the saw does not start after replacing the piston, it is necessary to check the fuel supply to the chamber and diagnose the ignition system. Very often, when installing the control lever on a chainsaw, craftsmen forget to connect the wires coming from the ignition coil, as a result of which the spark disappears and dust does not start.

The problem could also be hidden in a trapped fuel hose or if it's not connected at all. Of course, there could be many reasons, but you should remember that if all the work to replace the piston is done correctly, the tool should start and work normally without problems.

Result

We investigated the main causes and malfunctions of the Stihl ms 180 chainsaw that require CPG replacement. But, as a rule, in each case the reasons may overlap, and proper repair requires an integrated approach to solving the problem. Installing a new piston on the pole does not always solve the problem. Be sure to eliminate the cause of the malfunction, and the tool will last a long time without problems or the need for repair.

Ignition coil (magneto). Checking serviceability and setting the gap.

We often encounter situations where tool users come with a faulty ignition. Often it actually turns out to be faulty, but often the ignition coil has nothing to do with the breakdown of the tool. The steps to check the serviceability of the ignition coil are described below.

Assessment of the current state of the coil.

Before working on the ignition coil, it is worth checking the serviceability of the entire circuit. Do the following:

  • visually assess the absence of cracks and visible defects on the reel body
  • contamination of conductive parts and assemblies
  • serviceability and insulation of high-voltage wires, wire contacts, reliability of their fastening, absence of rust at fastening points
  • check the condition of the spark plug cap: it is often torn off from the high-voltage wire and tried to be returned using “improvised” methods. Remember: any “snot” in this place will reduce the quality of the spark plug’s electronic arc
  • check the serviceability of the spark plug. The quality of our gasoline does not allow the candle to “live for a long time”
  • Check that the circuit breaker is working properly. This is especially important for Chinese saws and trimmers.

The point of these actions is to exclude from the list of possible defects all elements of the circuit, not counting the coil. If everything is in order, we move on.

Why do you need a good spark?

The quality of the spark determines its ability to ignite a properly formed air-fuel mixture within operating conditions. A weak spark at high pressure and temperature in the combustion chamber cannot do this. Ignition occurs later or does not occur at all. A bulge appears in the engine operation, the engine does not gain speed, vibration and detonation appear, and a “reverse kick” effect may appear in the starter.

The insidiousness of such a breakdown lies in the fact that diagnostics using the methods given below does not give 100 percent confidence in the operability of the ignition coil. Such an implicit breakdown, when there seems to be a spark, but it is not completely correct, often misleads and forces you to attribute difficulties with the ignition coil to a carburetor malfunction. Common actions in such cases. This is an increase in fuel supply. It turns out that such a spark can ignite an enriched mixture, but not the right one. But the introduction of an enriched consistency leads to rapid wear of the cylinder-piston group and muffler. Therefore, in such controversial situations, check both the carburetor and the ignition coil again.

Checking the ignition coil.

To eliminate possible malfunctions from the wiring and shutdown buttons, it may be necessary to disconnect the control wires from the coil during the test.

  1. Measuring coil resistances. This method is not always applicable: firstly, you should know the resistance characteristics of the coil windings. Secondly, in addition to the inductor, the ignition contains semiconductor elements to form a suitable high-voltage pulse. Therefore, when we try to ring the magneto through the high-voltage and negative wires, we will get either an “Open Circuit” reading or a huge resistance. If the circuit still rings, then most likely this is a sign of a malfunction.
  2. Using a device that checks for the presence of a spark. It is installed in the open circuit between the spark plugs and the high-voltage wire of the ignition coil. The device is expensive and is mainly used in harsh service centers.
  3. With the help of a candle. Unscrew the spark plug and attach its body to the cylinder. Pull the starter and watch for a spark between its contacts. This method is approximate and does not give a complete picture of the condition of the ignition coil, because the spark plug is not “under pressure” and the flywheel will spin faster due to the lack of compression in the engine (the spark plug is turned out)
  4. "Barbaric" way . It is used at your own risk in hopeless situations.

  • remove the cap from the candle and insert a nail into it. Be careful not to damage the inside of the cap. then put it back on the candle and use it. It is better to bite off the head of the nail. Otherwise, it may be difficult to remove it.
  • position the nail 6-7mm from the cylinder.
  • “start” the engine, that is, perform the usual actions when starting the tool. This will force the ignition system to work. Please note that the candle must be screwed into the spark plug hole.
  • look at the presence and color of the spark. Ideally, the spark should be “strong” and bright blue. Everything else is a sign of a malfunction.
  • Important points:

Common Stihl 180 breakdowns

To all the common troubles with chainsaw style

can be attributed:

  • Broken cord;
  • Sprocket wear;
  • Origins in the chain oil supply system;
  • Worn worm gear oil pump;
  • Air leaks through the oil seals into the crankcase;
  • No spark at the spark plug;
  • Lack of fuel supply in case of defects in the carburetor (we will not dwell on them, since repairing and adjusting the carburetor of a chainsaw. Quite a broad question and will be discussed in a separate article)
  • Rupture of the seat ear under the engine control lever.

At this point, we will look at the faults more carefully and start with repairing the oil pump.
