First, on a chainsaw with the engine turned off, you need to turn clockwise until it stops those 2 screws that are marked with the letters H and L. After this, both of these screws need to be slowly turned one by one one full turn in the opposite direction;
Next, you need to quickly start the Stihl chainsaw and warm it up. As soon as the body of the tool becomes warm, you need to press the gas lever and, by turning screw H, achieve the motor speed, which will be 14,000 rpm. After this, you will need to start turning the LA bolt one by one until the chain stops rotating along the bar. Then the LA bolt must be turned a quarter turn in the opposite direction.

Almost all leading manufacturers of chainsaws equip their products with starters of a similar operating principle. It is no coincidence that specialized stores offer universal starter designs that are equally suitable for Shtil, Husqvarna, Makita chainsaws, and for Chinese semi-official counterfeits of the named brands. Only domestically produced chainsaw starters (Lesnik, Ural and a number of others) have some features.

The principle of operation of a starter for a chainsaw is as follows. A handle is installed in a groove in the housing, through which a cable is passed. If the handle is sharply raised, the cable is pulled out and engages the drum of the ratcheting mechanism, which transmits the movement to the drum with splines provided on the shaft. In this case, the crankshaft makes several revolutions, and the working mixture in the space between the piston and the cylinder head is compressed. Accordingly, when the handle is lowered, contact between the ratchet and the splines is lost and the shaft stops.

As engine volume increases, the required amount of fuel-air mixture required for its subsequent ignition also increases, so the number of pulls on the starting cable for high-power saws increases. Therefore, in order to speed up the return of the drum, involuntary return springs made of steel with high elastic properties are used.

Making it easier to start a chainsaw is done in the following ways:

Preliminary enrichment of the working mixture, for which there is a special damper in the carburetor design.
Installation of an automatic decompression valve, which reduces the operating pressure in the chainsaw cylinder.
By installing an additional spring, which during the process of moving the cable facilitates the unwinding of the crankshaft.
The presence in the design of some chainsaws (for example, Partner S series, Maxcut, etc.) of a primer - a pump that provides preliminary fuel pumping.

Ignition system failure

If the equipment fails, it is necessary to check the ignition system, and more specifically, the spark plug itself. If the plug is dry, it means that fuel is not getting into the cylinder, and therefore this is not the cause. If there are traces of the fuel mixture on the spark plug, you need to check the correct operation of the carburetor, as well as its adjustment. The spark plug must be wiped and dried, and then turn off the mixture supply and turn on the ignition. These actions will help remove excess fuel mixture and ventilate the combustion chamber. After this, you can put the candle back in place and try to start the saw again.

If there is soot on a given part, the reason sometimes lies in the use of low-quality oil. Another reason may be incorrect proportions of the fuel mixture and oil. In this case, the spark plug will need to be cleaned of carbon deposits, washed and the electrodes cleaned.

Please note that the distance between the electrodes should be no more than 0.65 mm

If there is soot on the spark plugs, you should check to see if there is a spark. To do this, it is necessary to secure the ignition cable to the spark plug, and fasten the nut to the cylinder with pliers. After this, the starter starts. If there is no spark, change the spark plug. If replacement does not work, check the wiring and all connections.

Another cause of failure may be a failed flywheel. To unscrew it you will need a special key, as it is screwed very tightly.

To block the shaft from turning, it is necessary to remove the spark plug and install a piston stopper through the resulting hole. Under no circumstances should you block the flywheel with a power screwdriver inserted between its ribs and body, since the flywheel blades will not be able to withstand the load and will break off.

After the piston is locked, the nut is unscrewed. When it is slightly loosened, its upper part is level with the tip of the shaft, at this moment you can install a metal drift on the nut and hit it. This way the flywheel will jump off the shaft and can be removed without much effort.

The chainsaw starts and stalls - the reason

If the chainsaw starts and stalls during the first attempts to do the job, then the reason may be problems with the chain brake or its jamming due to lack of lubrication. In this case, the oil level is determined. If the amount of lubricant is sufficient, then the reason may lie in the tube that leads it to the lubrication mechanism.

Another reason could be a carburetor failure. If he only needs adjustment, it can be done independently in accordance with the annotation. If the carburetor needs cleaning or repair, then you cannot do without the help of experts.

Another probable cause of this malfunction is the low level of fuel in the tank. In this case, the chain saw stalls when tilted, since the remainder of the fuel mixture ends up in the part of the tank opposite to the place where the absorption tube is located.

When you press the gas

The sawing units operate at idle speed, but the chain saw stalls when the gas is pressed, as the load increases. Before use, warm up the tool by running the engine at idle for a minute. If this is neglected, the motor stops after pressing the pedal. Other reasons may be:

clogged or unadjusted fuel mixing unit;
a clogged air filter does not provide adequate air flow when the load increases;
a dirty gasoline filter does not allow the required amount of consistency to pass through;
the wall of the cylinder and piston rubs.

A low octane number of fuel becomes a prerequisite for the brake, since this event prevents the engine from achieving the required power when the load increases.

Fuel supply

After unscrewing the candle, there is a damp coating on its surface. This indicates an excess supply of gasoline to the combustion chamber. For this reason, the tool does not work or stalls, because the fuel does not ignite.

Another inhibitory factor is the clogging of the breather - a small hole in the lid of the gasoline tank. It is cleaned with a needle; otherwise the STIHL MS 180 chainsaw will not start. To determine an incorrect fuel supply, the following steps are carried out in turn:

remove the candle;
2 cubes of gasoline are poured into the hole of the candle with a syringe;
put the ignition device in place and put on the high-voltage wire cap;
the lever is moved to the hot start position;
pull the starter handle several times.

If the tool starts and immediately stalls, then the fuel line is tested further. They inspect the gasoline filter, splashes from the engine crankcase, and the integrity of the partition in the pump when unscrewing the cap.

Crankshaft bearing failure

If there are deficiencies in the bearings, a weak free movement is felt. To identify it, the flywheel of the STIHL MS 180 saw is swayed from one side to the other. The movement indicates that the flywheel moves towards the electrodes with its magnets, as a result of which there is no spark. To remove the mechanism, dismantle the cutting element, remove the filter and clutch cover. To lock the crankshaft, remove the recoil starter cover and tighten the two bolts.

The clutch is turned clockwise using the key. Remove the drum with the sprocket, change the old clutch and tighten it until it stops. The crankshaft is locked so as not to break the starter. The mechanism is assembled in the reverse order. To tighten, the brake handle is tilted forward, the tool is wound in, and then removed from the brake.

Bearings with defects are less often detected (the diameter of the holes in the cage is increased). To determine, disassemble and measure using a micrometer. Broken bearings are indicated by regular knocking noises. In this case, urgent repairs are required, because if the integrity of the crankshaft is damaged, the piston group and cylinder will fail.
