How to make a manual starter for a walk-behind tractor
As in the case of making an electric starter from improvised means, making a manual starter for a walk-behind tractor (Neva, Oka, Cascade, Patriot and others) will not be a difficult task for a craftsman with the appropriate knowledge.
To assemble a homemade kickstarter, to the materials and procedure described above, you should add the installation of a handle to transmit force manually, which will replace the operation of an electric motor. The foot of the manual starter can be made from a thin metal pipe, which will need to be bent to the shape of the foot and installed in the hollow hole of the coil. After assembling the device, be sure to weld it.

Construction of the MTZ walk-behind tractor
MTZ walk-behind tractors began to be manufactured in Soviet times. Their main advantage is simplicity and maintainability. Therefore, there are no problems understanding the structure of Belarus. The most popular model is MTZ-05.

Before starting any repair work, be sure to study this diagram. It will eliminate many questions regarding the location or name of the main parts of the device.
Engine Lifan 168 F-2
Engine
Based on the reviews, we can identify the main problems that arise during operation and ways to solve them.
Starting the MTZ engine is difficult
- There is a shortage of fuel or its supply is difficult. In this case, you should check the presence of fuel in the gas tank. If there is gasoline, check and clean the fuel filters. Check to see if the carburetor is tightly connected to the head. Assess the performance of the fuel pump.
- Problems in the ignition system. Check the connection of the wires to the magneto and spark plugs. Make sure the magneto is working and whether it produces a spark. The insulation of the electrodes in the spark plugs or the gap between them may be damaged. Start with faster pedal pressure. Check the operation of the accelerator.
The crankshaft turns slowly or does not move at all
- Are the starter and battery wires securely fastened?
- battery charge and serviceability;
- How warm is the engine;
- Is there any slipping of the freewheel in the starter drive? If such a situation occurs, then it is necessary to completely replace the coupling;
- condition of lubrication of drive gears and splines;
- collector cleanliness;
- condition of the brushes;
- condition of the armature windings (in case of damage, replace the entire device).
Starter
The engine starts but the starter does not turn off
In this case, first of all, you need to disassemble the starter and make sure it is working. Perhaps the starter drive is stuck on the shaft or the armature of the traction relay.
The walk-behind tractor operates jerkily
- unstable operation of the ignition system;
- the candles are smoked;
- dirt in the carburetor.
MTZ engine does not produce full power
Spark plug
- wash and dry the spark plugs, and also set the gap between them;
- adjust the composition of the fuel mixture at idle speed;
- clean the carburetor;
- make sure that the ignition is set correctly;
- there was too much load on Belarus, and the throttle valve opened too much, put it in place.
During operation, the carburetor system overflows with oil.
Carburetor K60V
- remove carbon deposits and wipe the valve;
- the locking needle does not sit completely;
- the fuel pump supplies too much fuel;
- use more gaskets for the fuel pump.
Engine replacement
Most often, engine replacement is carried out on old Belarus 05 and 09. They are equipped with factory UD-15 and UD-25 engines. Their resource of work since the 90s has long been exhausted. And therefore, Honda and Lifan engines are now considered more relevant.
Engine Honda GX270
New factory models of MTZ-09N walk-behind tractors are equipped with Honda GX 270 engines. They are considered the most reliable for use in gardening.
Replacing an engine with a new one is a difficult task, since it is necessary to clearly connect all systems according to the appropriate diagram.
Replace the engine exactly according to the diagram. If something goes wrong in the replacement, then when receiving heavy loads Belarus will begin to behave unpredictably.

How to increase the speed of the MTZ walk-behind tractor
Gear
Many MTZ owners are interested in this question, because they want to get the most from their walk-behind tractor.
To do this, you can upgrade the gears and replace the standard ones with high-speed ones.
- As standard, the driven gear has 61 teeth and the axle shaft has 12 teeth.
- The high-speed driven gear has 55 teeth, the axle shaft has 15 teeth.
During modernization, the engine speed remains unchanged, but the rotation speed of the axle shaft, and hence the entire walk-behind tractor, increases significantly.
The table shows the speed change in each gear
Gear no. | Walk-behind tractor speed in factory configuration (km/h) | Speed of walk-behind tractor equipped with high-speed gears (km/h) |
1 | 2, | 3,5 |
2 | 3,6 | 6,0 |
3 | 5,2 | 8,6 |
4 | 9,2 | 15,3 |
Wheels 4×10
Another way to increase the speed of movement of Belarus is to install wheels of larger diameter.
Everything is simple here, the larger the diameter, the greater the distance it will travel in one rotation.
Run-in
If you are the first owner of an MTZ walk-behind tractor, then before full use it is necessary to run it in.
This procedure is necessary so that the factory parts get used to each other and begin to work stably.
Because if you immediately put a heavy plow on it and start plowing, the parts may not fit together tightly due to their small roughness, and any gear element can easily fail.
Trailer
For Belarusians, the running-in period should be from 10 to 12 engine hours. At this time, you just need to let the engine run with light loads. For example, it could be a regular trailer that can be connected to a walk-behind tractor and taken for a ride.
Settings
For proper operation, it is necessary to configure the walk-behind tractor before going into the field to carry out work.
Setting up a walk-behind tractor is especially important after the equipment has been idle in the garage during the winter, when the connections could have become loose.
If you are the first owner and have just bought Belarus, then it should already be configured by the Smorgon plant. But it is still recommended to check all engine operating systems again.
Engine tuning steps:
- Adjust the fuel mixture, since it is controlled by special screws that periodically need to be put in place.
- Set the required gap between the valves, this is necessary so that the required amount of fuel mixture enters the carburetor.
- Adjust the carburetor to produce the required engine speed at minimum and maximum gas.
- Check the tire pressure, it should be the same, at the level of 2 atmospheres, otherwise during operation the MTZ will lead in one direction and control will be difficult.
Service
Checking the oil level with a dipstick
The MTZ walk-behind tractor is unpretentious in maintenance, but its condition should be monitored.
- After field work, you should clean it of any remaining dirt; this will prevent the walk-behind tractor from forming corrosion under the influence of moisture.
- If the paintwork has been damaged, it must be corrected using special paint for the same reason.
- It is necessary to check the oil level in special tanks. And keep it at the required level. Otherwise, friction will occur without lubrication, and wear of parts increases significantly. For the same reason, it is necessary to lubricate the axles of the shift levers with Litol or Solid Oil.
Exploitation
- After you have started the engine, the pedal should be slowly raised to a horizontal position.
Important! It is forbidden to work with the pedal fully lowered.
- The walk-behind tractor itself is useless; it works with the help of special attachments. It must be securely fastened with a pin until it stops! Otherwise, the connection may break and the equipment will fly away from the walk-behind tractor. If it is located behind, that is, in front of the operator, then serious damage to the latter’s health can be caused.
- It is forbidden to engage reverse gear while the walk-behind tractor is moving forward.
Lubrication system
Oil 10W-30
For long-term and stable operation of the machine, it is necessary to lubricate it correctly. Thanks to this, all parts of the device will work for a long time and stably.
The MTZ crankcase is designed for 0.6 dm3 of oil. According to the operating instructions, the 10W-30 series is considered optimal. It is recommended to take imported oil, it is more expensive, but it also works better.
Important! If you just purchased a walk-behind tractor, there is no oil in the crankcase. It needs to be poured in there. It is not allowed to start running-in without oil.
After the first 25 hours of operation, the first oil change is necessary. This must be done regularly. The operating instructions for the walk-behind tractor clearly state after how many hours of operation the oil on the MTZ walk-behind tractor should be changed.
Before replacement, the engine warms up. Thanks to this trick, the oil becomes more fluid and comes out of the engine easier.
Oil change algorithm:
- Remove the cap from the neck of the oil tank.
- Place a container under the drain hole.
- Remove the plug from the oil tank to drain.
- Remains in this position for 15 minutes.
- The drain plug is inserted into place.
- Oil is poured to the required level and its level is checked with a dipstick.
- The lid is screwed on.
Choosing transmission oil can be confusing for many. It is logical that the transmission should be filled, but this is not the case. In this case, there is no heavy load on the transmission, as in cars.
If you fill in thicker transmission oil such as TAp-15 or TAD-17, the operation of the walk-behind tractor will be difficult.
A walk-behind tractor with transmission oil cannot produce the required power. Therefore, motor oil made according to Soviet GOST standards is also poured here: M-10V2 or M-10G2 (summer oil options) and M-8G2 (in the winter season).
Transmission oil change algorithm:
- Place a container under the transmission drain hole.
- Unscrew the drain plug and drain the used oil.
- Fill in new and close the cap.
- Run the oil through the transmission system at idle speed.
If you pour oil above the mark, the walk-behind tractor will drive it throughout the entire system, and its excess will flow out of the oil tank and connection points.
Clutch adjustment
The clutch is the link between the gearbox and the control lever. Therefore, you need to know how to adjust it.
If the clutch fails, then the failures are immediately visible:
- When the clutch is fully depressed and the walk-behind tractor is torn, the adjustment screw has become loose and should be tightened.
- If the clutch is released and the walk-behind tractor does not produce the required speed or stands still, then you should loosen the screw a little.

checkpoint
If during operation a strange sound begins to be heard from the gearbox, stop work immediately. This is the first sign that something is wrong in the box. The transmission may also become very hot.
- The most common problem is a lack of oil or poor quality. It is best to use imported analogues for filling, in this case you can protect yourself from bad oil. If there is simply not enough, then add more. The level should be checked before starting each work.
- If you have changed the oil, but the noise remains, then the problem is in the gears. They should be replaced with new ones. It is not allowed to work with faulty gears.
If there is a problem with gear shifting, switching off on its own, or jamming, there may be several reasons.
- First of all, adjust the clutch, if you are sure of the correct setting, read on;
- The gearbox parts are worn out, disassemble and look at their condition, if necessary, replace with new ones;
- The shaft splines are worn out.
Important! If the ends of the rotating gears are dirty with dust and oil adhering to them, then gear shifting will occur spontaneously; you cannot work with such a walk-behind tractor.
Generator
As standard, MTZ walk-behind tractors are sold without a generator. When modernizing them with a battery, using Belarus becomes much more pleasant. This makes it possible to install an electric starter instead of a conventional one and install a light. Thanks to the battery and electric starter, you can easily start the walk-behind tractor, and the light will help you carry out work in the dark.

Walk-behind tractor vibration
Flywheel
The MTZ is designed in such a way as to minimize the vibration that is generated during its operation. This is achieved due to modern bearings, heavy construction weight, improved piston and flywheel.
Over time, vibration may increase during use. In this case, it is necessary to check the condition of the bearings; when they wear out, the vibration that comes from the connecting rod mechanism increases significantly.
The flywheel is responsible for transmitting rotation. Therefore, everything may be fine in the engine, but when it is transferred to the flywheel, vibration is already formed. If it is damaged, it should be replaced with a new one.
Installing a starter on a walk-behind tractor
There are different designs of starters:
- manual;
- spring;
- electric.
The most common is a manual starter for a walk-behind tractor, since this device is very easy to install on a walk-behind tractor, and its repair is easy to do yourself. If such a device is operated correctly, its durability is several years.
Let's look at what elements a starter for a walk-behind tractor consists of:
- a drum-shaped body;
- springs: large and small;
- washers;
- coil;
- cord;
- reeds;
- fastening parts.
In the center of the drum there is a reel on which the cord is attached. A large spring is located in the housing around an axis and is designed to return the reel to its original position after scrolling.
The mechanism of this device is quite simple; you can assemble it yourself.
The operation of a walk-behind tractor with a manual starter is carried out as follows. The driver starts the mechanism by pulling the handle of the device. At the same time, the device begins to work and starts the engine. In order for the device to successfully transfer the initial rotation to the motor, the handle of the device must be pulled twice.
But despite the fact that a manual starter on a walk-behind tractor is considered a reliable device, it also sometimes fails. If the structure breaks down, you can repair it yourself.
