MAZ-543 is a four-axle heavy off-road truck. Serial production of this truck continued from the 1960s to the 2000s.

First of all, the MAZ-543 is a military truck. Its chassis was equipped with:

  1. Missile launch systems (“Elbrus”, “Temp” and “Temp-S”, “Pioneer”, “Topol”);
  2. Anti-aircraft missile systems (Amur, Baikal, S-300, S-400 Triumph);
  3. Multiple launch rocket systems (“Smerch”);
  4. Artillery systems (“Bereg”);
  5. Anti-ship systems (“Rubezh”).

In addition, this model was widely used in the oil and gas industries, where it was converted into a whip and pipe carrier. However, other options for special add-ons were also offered, allowing the car to perform many different tasks.

Story

In 1959, the designers of the Minsk Automobile Plant began working in a new direction of development, namely the production of four-axle universal cargo vehicles designed to perform army tasks. The development of such vehicles was carried out by Belarusian specialists together with engineers from the Yaroslavl Automobile Plant. The first model was assigned the factory index MAZ-537. It was this truck that became proof that the Minsk Automobile Plant is capable of producing, in addition to civilian vehicles, also heavy army trucks.

MAZ-537 served as the basis for the creation of subsequent models. Many design solutions and elements were taken from its design, such as the frame structure and axles. The new model received the factory name MAZ-543. Unlike its predecessor, this truck featured significantly improved technical characteristics, speed and dynamics. Because of these features, the truck was given another name - Hurricane. In 1962, the Minsk Automobile Plant produced a pilot batch of MAZ-543, consisting of six cars. They were all sent to Volgograd, where they were equipped with special military equipment at the defense department.

After the mobile missile systems of the Strategic Missile Forces system were introduced, designers began to develop specialized habitable military bodies, presented in the form of standardized sealed vans with a welded all-metal frame. Compared to standard KUNGs installed on such army vehicles as the Ural, ZIL-131 and others, the developed bodies were distinguished by significantly increased capacity. Also inside there were special compartments, special work equipment and places for long-term work.

The Soviet army used these special vehicles as command posts, powerful communications equipment, combat control vehicles, mobile power plants, and the like. It is worth noting that most of the bodies used advanced and secret equipment, which the driver of the car did not even know about.

In 1976, the Minsk Automobile Plant introduced several special civilian modifications designed for work in the oil and gas industries. These were 38-ton road trains and road trains, 18-ton dump trucks, and 37-ton flatbed road trains. It is also worth noting that the base model MAZ-543 also served to create a mobile drilling rig.

By the early 1990s, designers developed a new series of similar trucks, which received the factory index MAZ-7930. The new models were a continuation of the Soviet MAZ-543, but unlike it had new 12-cylinder power plants developing a maximum power of 500 horsepower, multi-speed gearboxes provided by the Yaroslavl Motor Plant, new monoblock cabs, as well as high-sided all-metal bodies.

Work on this project was not stopped even during the difficulties associated with the collapse of the USSR, and in 1994 the pilot batch successfully passed all tests, after which its mass production began. However, the name has already been changed to MZKT-7930.

Modifications

Among the main modifications of this truck, the following models should be noted:

MAZ-543A

The designers of the Minsk Automobile Plant presented this version in 1963. Unlike the base truck, the MAZ-543A had a maximum load capacity increased to 19,400 kilograms. In 1966, the MAZ-543A became the basis for the creation of many other modifications for military purposes.

This model was not much different from the MAZ-543, but there were still changes. For example, the modification was equipped with cabins moved forward. This solution made it possible to increase the installation length of the frame structure to 7000 millimeters.

It is also worth noting that the MAZ-543A was extremely popular, and therefore its mass production continued until the 2000s. During all this time, the Minsk Automobile Plant produced about 2,500 cars.

The main purpose of the modification is to transport missile weapons and various special equipment. But since the truck chassis made it possible to use a lot of other add-ons, the truck’s scope of application expanded significantly.


MAZ-543M

It is the best modification released in 1974. Compared to its predecessors, the new model was equipped with only one cabin, mounted on the left. In addition, the designers managed to increase the maximum load capacity. Thus, the truck could transport any cargo and equipment weighing up to 22,200 kilograms.

The model was so successful that it is still used today. Based on the MAZ-543M, military special equipment is produced, equipped with such weapons as the Smerch SZO, the S-300 air defense system and many others.

Throughout the entire series production, about 4,500 vehicles were produced. After the collapse of the USSR, mass production of this modification was stopped. However, the plant continued to produce small batches ordered by the state.

By the way, it was on the basis of the MAZ-543M that a new version with the MAZ-7930 index was built. It was distinguished by the presence of a new all-metal body, a more powerful power plant with a maximum power of 500 horsepower and other characteristics and features. After the collapse of the USSR, the MAZ-7930 was renamed MZKT-7930. The truck is still produced under this name.

In addition, other modifications were produced in small batches, such as:

MAZ-543B.

It is a special chassis that uses a modernized 9P117M missile launcher, part of the 9K72 complex. Among the external differences, it should be noted that there is one cabin installed on the left (as on the MAZ-543M modification). The model has a maximum load capacity of 19,600 kilograms. Over the entire period, 250 cars rolled off the assembly line;


MAZ-543V.

It was with this modification that the history of the version with the MAZ-543M index began. Here, for the first time, one cabin was used, shifted to the left. Otherwise, this modification is practically no different from the base truck and the MAZ-543M version that appeared later. The Minsk Automobile Plant produced a total of 233 such trucks;

MAZ-543P.

This version was used in training soldiers. In addition, the MAZ-543P transported artillery pieces, heavy trailers and various special equipment;

MAZ-543T.

It is an analogue of the previous modification, but already adapted for use in tropical conditions and high mountains;

On the basis of the MAZ-543 truck, fire engines were also developed, produced under the designations AA-60(543)-160, AA-60(7310)-160.01 and AA-70(7310)-220. However, they were used only at airfields and airports, since they have quite impressive overall dimensions. The modifications were equipped with a tank with a volume of 12,000 liters and a special tank designed for 900 liters of extinguishing foam.

Cabin

The first copies of MAZ-543 trucks were equipped with a solid cab. But later, with the advent of a new missile system, the combat weapon of which was 12.5 meters long, difficulties arose with installing it on a truck. The length of the car was not enough and for this it was necessary to lengthen the chassis. However, such a modification required serious changes in the design, and besides, it was not rational.

The chief designer of the automobile plant, Shaposhnikov, soon came up with a way out of this situation. He proposed dividing the cabin into two parts, spaced on the left and right sides. This made it possible to place the missile system on a vehicle without lengthening the chassis. The solution turned out to be quite successful and a similar configuration was later used on all similar machines.

Inside the cabs, seats and all the necessary instruments were installed, informing about the status of all the main systems of the truck. For protection, special armored panels were used, in which loopholes were placed for small arms fire. It is worth noting that in some modifications only one cabin was installed, located on the left side.

In the manufacture of the cabin, polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass was used. The cabins were equipped with a heater and fans to provide airflow to the front windows, as well as an intercom for internal communication of the P-124 model and a radio station for external communication. Protective curtains were used on the windows, and the front ones had viewing slots. The door windows opened outwards. The rear of both cabins had special openings for ventilation equipment.

Engine

The MAZ-543 truck is equipped with a 12-cylinder V-shaped power unit of the D12A-525A brand, running on diesel fuel. This engine was also used on tanks. D12A-525A has a liquid cooling system and four valves for each cylinder.

Fuel tank

MAZ-543 was equipped with three fuel tanks, namely two main and one additional. The total volume of the main tanks is 500 liters (250 for each), and the additional 180 liters.

Fuel consumption

Cars of the first years of production had an average fuel consumption of 100 liters for every 100 kilometers. In more modern versions this figure has increased to 125 liters.

This truck is equipped with a hydromechanical transmission, which includes a torque converter and a three-speed planetary gearbox with a hydraulic shift drive. By the way, unlike other trucks on the MAZ-543, the gear change is carried out not by a floor lever, but by a special handle mounted on the steering column. The gearbox has the following gear ratios:

  • I – 3.2;
  • II – 1.8;
  • III – 1.0;
  • ZH – 1.6.

The transmission also includes a two-speed transfer case with a locking center differential. The transfer case is controlled by a separate lever, also mounted on the steering column. By the way, the transfer case has a pneumatic drive.

To further improve the all-terrain qualities, the designers used locking cross-axle differentials on the rear axles.

Brake system

The model was equipped with a single-line brake system with pneumohydraulic drives. All wheels are equipped with drum brakes, just like conventional trucks. These mechanisms are controlled using a foot pedal.

The car also has a band parking brake. It prevents arbitrary movement of the truck not through brake mechanisms, but through a mechanical transmission.

Chassis

The MAZ-543 truck uses an independent torsion bar suspension, the design of which includes longitudinal torsion shafts, transverse fork arms and longitudinal torsion bars for each wheel. It is worth noting that the suspension was inherited from the MAZ-537 with virtually no changes.

The steering mechanism has a gearbox, a distributor, hydraulic boosters, a pump, an oil tank, a pipeline, longitudinal tractors, levers and steering linkages. Since the model has large overall dimensions, to increase its maneuverability, the designers also made the second axle steerable, and the wheels turn almost synchronously.

MAZ-543 has a single-pitch tire. All axles are equipped with disc wheels with pneumatic tires of the B-77 brand. Tires have sizes 1500x600-635. To improve cross-country ability, all wheels were equipped with a tire pressure regulation system.

Peculiarities

The main features of the MAZ-543 truck are:

  1. High cross-country ability. This figure was ensured by high ground clearance, lockable center and cross-axle differentials, all-wheel drive, single-pitch tires, and a tire pressure regulation system. Thanks to this, the truck is able to overcome rather difficult road sections;
  2. Versatility. Of course, the main purpose of this model is to perform various army tasks, namely transporting weapons and much more. However, due to its excellent technical and operational characteristics, the MAZ-543 was often used in civilian areas. For example, the truck was quite popular in the oil and gas industries, where it was equipped with drilling rigs and other special equipment. Fire modifications were also created. They were used at airfields and airports. The main equipment of such versions are large tanks designed for 12,000 liters of water and foam tanks;
  3. Maneuverability. For its rather impressive overall dimensions, the MAZ-543 has quite excellent maneuverability. This is due to the fact that it uses two controlled axes;
  4. High load capacity. The design of the car is capable of withstanding a load of 20,000 kilograms, which allows the installation of a wide variety of types of superstructures and equipment;
  5. Power. The 12-cylinder V-engine used has excellent power performance. In addition, the engine has high thrust, available over a wide speed range.

Reviews from owners and drivers

  • Maz 543 is truly a masterpiece of the domestic automobile industry. It is incredibly heavy-duty and passable, but very clumsy and gluttonous. I drove this miracle of technology while serving in the army, and worked as a driver-mechanic. The first kilometers were somehow unusual and even scary from the aggressive roar of the 500-horsepower diesel engine. By the way, it could be started using batteries (there are four of them with a capacity of 190 amperes) or compressed air (in the driver’s cabin there are pneumatic cylinders of 150 atmospheres each). In addition, it was still possible to start in combined mode - together with the battery and compressed air. It was easier for me to start with a battery - simple and fast. In terms of cross-country ability, there were no complaints about the car at all - I effortlessly overcame meter-long fords. The semi-automatic transmission works excellently - it's three-speed, but that's enough. Fuel consumption is 180 liters per 100 km. Thanks to the PZD, the engine starts easily in winter. You can carry 22 tons, including all sorts of rocket launchers. I was delighted with this device. It is also used in the civilian sphere - for example, as a tractor in quarries.
  • I have a Maz 543 with a four-axle chassis, which still impresses today with its off-road capabilities. The car is equipped with a 523-horsepower diesel engine, which has a huge thrust reserve and is at the same time quite reliable. This technique can handle any off-road terrain, without any exaggeration. The tractor has a torsion bar suspension, which allows it to overcome rough terrain at speeds of 60 km/h, and you can’t even feel the roughness of the road. The 8x8 wheel arrangement adds points in favor of cross-country ability, and the 12-cylinder diesel engine has a dry-type sump - this solution means a different way of storing oil - in a separate oil tank, and not in the engine sump. The machine is equipped with a system of hydromechanical transmission of torque to the drive axles, due to which you can drive such an all-terrain vehicle easily and comfortably. The off-road arsenal is also complemented by a power take-off and various differential locks. The 8x8 wheel arrangement inspires respect - with such wheels you can hardly get buried anywhere. I have the single cab version, located on the left side. It's pretty tight. Inside, everything is bare metal, without any upholstery. There is no sound insulation - this car does not need it. On the MAZ 543 you can easily accelerate to the rated speed of 60 km/h. The machine is equipped with two tanks of 250 liters each. The thick body is virtually rust-free if you maintain it regularly. Such equipment is surprisingly simple to maintain if you have the appropriate equipment and a workshop with the necessary spare parts, which have to be ordered from military factories.

Varieties

There are often different versions of the MAZ-5551, such as 020 with an increased loading volume.

MAZ-5551-020R is equipped with an even larger loading surface and volume.
