The two-stroke MP-1 engine, rated at 4 hp, which gave it the number 4 in its name, developed for this chainsaw in 1953 at the Zaporozhye “Progress”, was, and remains, so easy to repair and maintain that it ensured its success for many decades.
But Druzhba-4 did not deserve its popularity with a single engine. The layout, convenient for long-term work, allows the feller to work standing, in a comfortable position, cutting trees almost close to the ground, and is not repeated in any other saw, except for those that are only its modifications. How many were there? Significant - really one, when the saw acquired a new, more powerful (5 hp) engine, gearbox with a saw chain lubrication system and the name “Ural”. It’s not worth talking about little things like the shape of the tank. And the reduction in weight, which is still hardly the biggest drawback of this design, from 12.5 to 11 kg, cannot be called a significant achievement.
The saw, which received a gold medal at the Brussels exhibition in 1958, was mass-produced until the end of the 90s with minor changes:
- in the 60s, changes were made to the handle fastening;
- in the 80s, the carburetor (“Druzhba-4A”) was replaced and electronic ignition (“Druzhba-4A-Electron” was installed);
- in the 90s, another new carburetor (“Druzhba-4M”) was installed.
Why do you need a muffler?
This is a special device, thanks to which the noise from a running engine becomes an order of magnitude lower, but does not muffle it completely and this does not suit many people.
Of course, saws are now sold in which the muffler is capable of suppressing noise several times, but this immediately affects the operation of the saw.
Therefore, if you want to make the engine even quieter than what is provided by the factory, then you should try installing an additional muffler by making it yourself.
If you are smart, the same Ural saw can be made to work much quieter and this will not affect its performance in any way.
Repair and maintenance of Druzhba chainsaw
Reliable spare parts and durable mechanisms of the Druzhba chainsaw are not able to protect the tool from damage. Most often, the causes of tool malfunction are improper handling or simple wear and tear of the mechanisms.
To reduce the risk of premature breakdown of the chainsaw, you should use high-quality gasoline of at least AI-80 grade to refuel it, in which oil for 2-stroke engines should be diluted. The proportion of gasoline and oil should be 1:25, that is, 40 ml of motor oil should be diluted in 1 liter of fuel.
The oil used to lubricate the chain must also be of high quality. Under no circumstances should you pour waste material into the oil tank of your Druzhba chainsaw, otherwise this will lead to damage to the tool’s lubrication system. To prevent the chainsaw chain from subjecting to excessive friction, use only fresh oil from trusted manufacturers.
It should be noted that the use of a high-quality fuel mixture and lubricant does not guarantee the constant uninterrupted operation of the Druzhba chainsaw. However, even if you discover a malfunction, you should not get upset right away. Some breakdowns are quite easy to fix with your own hands. Below we list typical malfunctions of domestic tools and ways to eliminate them yourself.
Adjusting the Druzhba chainsaw carburetor
- To find the highest engine speed in idle mode, you must slowly turn the screw marked “L” clockwise. Once you find the maximum RPM, turn the same screw back ¼ turn. If after this the chain on the bar continues to rotate, then turn the screw marked “T” counterclockwise until the saw element stops completely;
- Turning the screw marked “H” will allow you to adjust the required power and speed. To do this, you need to connect a tachometer to the Druzhba chainsaw and by turning the “H” screw, find the optimal number of revolutions indicated in the instructions. Immediately after this, turn screw “H” ¼ turn counterclockwise;
- Then you need to fine-tune the engine idle speed. To do this, screw “T” should be turned until the saw chain begins to rotate. Immediately after this, turn the screw “T” in the opposite direction until the chain stops completely.
Carburetor adjustment carried out according to the instructions will allow you to reduce the fuel consumption of your Druzhba chainsaw and protect its parts from excessive wear.
How to set the ignition on a Friendship chainsaw?
To properly repair a tool, you need to carefully study its operating instructions. As the repair instructions for the Druzhba chainsaw indicate, to install the ignition, you need to remove the cover to which the starter is attached and turn the magneto so that the marks on it and the adapter coincide. After this chainsaw, friendship will be much easier to make.
Ural chainsaw device
The Ural chainsaw consists of many different components and assembly units connected to each other in different ways. In order to independently find the cause of problems with the operation of the chainsaw, you need to know very well the structure of the Ural chainsaw. Therefore, in this article, I invite everyone interested to familiarize themselves with the structure and operating principle of this wonderful and necessary tool.
Chainsaw MP-5 "Ural-2T Electron" (Figure 1) consists of: engine 1, gearbox 12, frame, sawing apparatus consisting of saw bar 15, tensioner 13 and saw chain 16, removable starter 3 and has a power supply system and lubrication of the sawing apparatus. The chainsaw comes with an individual set of spare parts and tools. 3.1 Engine The engine consists of the following main assembly units (Figure 2): crankcase 1, crankshaft 2 with connecting rod, piston 15 with two compression rings 20, cylinder 14 and automatic centrifugal friction clutch and has systems: ignition, cylinder cooling and exhaust gas exhaust .

The engine cylinder is made of aluminum alloy. To increase wear resistance, its internal working surface is chrome-plated.
The tightness of the engine crank chamber is ensured by rubber seals 3 and 17, paronite gasket 23 and paper gasket 25 (Figure 2).

The friction clutch consists of two parts - driving and driven. The leading part of the coupling is installed on the shank of the engine crankshaft and consists of a driver-16, weights 19 in the form of ring sectors and spiral springs 18.
The driven part of the coupling (hub) is installed on the shank of the drive gear of the gearbox 8 (Figure 7). Lubrication of the crankshaft bearings and working surfaces of the crank group parts during engine operation is carried out by oil included in the fuel mixture. 3.1.1 Ignition system The ignition system includes: contactless magneto EM-1 10 (Figure 4), flywheel 4 (Figure 2), ignition wire, insulator with noise suppression device (Figure 5) and spark plugs.

The electrical circuit diagram of the magneto EM-1 is given in this article. All semiconductor elements: five diodes, a thyristor, a resistor and a capacitor are mounted in the base chamber and filled with a sealing compound. If one of the elements in the base chamber fails, the magneto cannot be restored.

The magneto ensures the start of spark formation at the spark plug at a flywheel speed of 400-600 rpm, therefore, checking the magneto for sparking should be done by rotating the engine crankshaft with the starter at a frequency not lower than the specified one. It is necessary to take into account that the temperature of the spark emitted by the EM-1 magneto is much higher than that from the contact magneto, and the spark is difficult to see in daylight. This is not a magneto defect.

The EM-1 magneto operates normally at temperatures up to plus 85° C (temperature of the magneto housing). If the specified temperature value is exceeded when operating the chainsaw, the magneto electronic unit may fail. To avoid premature failure of the EM-1 magneto, you should follow the rules for operating the chainsaw. The magneto is installed in the crankcase on two studs and secured with nuts 8 (Figure 3).
A spark between the electrodes of the spark plug appears at the moment when the piston does not reach T.M.T. by 3.66 mm, which corresponds to the crankshaft rotation angle of 29° before T.M.T., which is the ignition timing angle. At the manufacturer's factory, when setting the ignition timing against mark 7 (Figure 4), mark 7 is placed on the magneto on the crankcase (Figure 4). When installing a magneto after replacing it, after routine or repair work during operation of the chainsaw, combine the indicated risks. Flywheel The flywheel is four-pole, installed on the crankshaft cone, fixed with a key and secured with a nut M 10 x 1. A ratchet 7 is attached to the thread in the flywheel hub (Figure 2) to start the starter motor. The high voltage wire is screwed at one end into the output pipe of the high-voltage transformer 5 (Figure 4), the other end has a threaded bushing for connection to the insulator (cap) 12 (Figure 2).

The insulator is made of dielectric material - phenol plastic. Contact screw 4 is installed in the insulator on the thread (Figure 7). Suppression of radio interference arising during operation of the chainsaw is carried out by damping resistance 3 and shielding cap 6.

Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages of petrol saws of the Druzhba series:
- the use of aluminum alloy for the manufacture of the body;
- removable structural elements fixed with threaded connections;
- high power and increased engine torque;
- when the chain jams, the motor does not stop;
- the use of gasoline with an octane rating of less than 80 is allowed;
- the design of the handles allows you to saw wood while standing;
- high build quality (especially products of early modifications);
- chrome plating of the working surface of the cylinder is provided.
Equipment disadvantages:
- there is no emergency stop button for the engine; when the speed drops, the shaft is disconnected from the chain gear by a centrifugal clutch;
- the heavy weight of the saw, making it difficult to carry the product;
- spontaneous loosening of threaded connections;
- high noise level during operation and oil emission from the exhaust pipe;
- the use of an internal combustion engine imposes restrictions on the use of the tool indoors.
Equipment with a more complex design - manufacturing principle
More experienced farmers who are perfectly familiar with the structure of a chainsaw can make more complex equipment. Such equipment includes:
- A tool sawmill is made using a metal frame. Next, the chainsaw itself is fixedly attached to it. The workpieces are directed towards the rails. Another manufacturing option is to use an adapter that is attached to the base of the tire.
- You should also use a guide that will correct the direction of movement of the installed adapter. The guide must be installed on a board fixed to a log for cutting. Such a device will help to saw a log into several parts, spending a minimum of effort;
- Moped - it is based on an old bicycle, to the frame of which a chainsaw motor is attached.
- The design of the moped also includes a gear drive. If you used a mountain bike as a basis, then to move on such a moped you will also need a gearbox;
- Do-it-yourself snowmobile from a Friendship chainsaw - every more or less experienced chainsaw owner can assemble this unit. This requires a transmission system of two gears, through which the motor power will be transmitted to the skis.
- For more stable operation of the equipment, you will need to adjust the carburetor. If for some reason the unit does not start immediately after assembly, then the reason for this should be sought in the spark plug. Most likely, it will need to be replaced with a higher quality part.

Adjusting the Druzhba chainsaw carburetor
The main reasons for the need to urgently adjust the carburetor of Druzhba brand chainsaws include:
- interruptions in fuel supply;
- excessive volumes of fuel supplied by the carburetor;
- failures in the process of preparing a mixture of fuel and air - in these cases, the fuel system sucks in too much or not enough air.
Its repair instructions will tell you about the procedure for adjusting the carburetor of a Druzhba chainsaw. The operator’s action algorithm should be as follows:
- On a saw with the engine turned off and cooled down, the screws responsible for the amount of fuel and air must be turned alternately until they stop. After this, each of the screws must be turned 2-3 full turns in the opposite direction;
- After warming up the power unit, by ear or using a tachometer, you need to set the screw positions that will ensure the most stable operation of the engine;
- As a result, the Druzhba chainsaw motor should operate quietly, without interruptions or jerks, and the chain should not rotate arbitrarily on the bar.
To reduce the frequency of carburetor adjustments, you need to fill the chainsaw with a properly prepared fuel mixture. The proportion of gasoline and oil for the Friendship chainsaw should be 1:20, that is, at least 50 ml of motor oil must be diluted in 1 liter of fuel.

Many Western chainsaw manufacturers produce tuning kits for their saws to increase power, and service centers have a separate price list with a list of possible modifications. Mainly found in petrol tool service centers in the USA and Germany.

Causes of malfunctions and ways to eliminate them
Almost every chainsaw owner has at least once encountered the fact that the tool either does not start at all when you press the gas, or starts and stalls after a while. There can be many reasons for a device to malfunction. Some of them are quite simple and easy to fix. Therefore, it is worth studying the main reasons so that in the event of a basic breakdown, you do not take the tool to a chainsaw repair service.
Why does a chainsaw start and immediately stall?
There may be several reasons for this:
- There is not enough fuel in the gas tank. If the tool stops working immediately after the factory, then first of all you need to check the presence of fuel in the gas tank. If it is not enough, then you need to add the fuel mixture, which is prepared strictly according to the instructions included with the tool. Chainsaw fuel consists of gasoline with the highest possible octane number and oil, the brand of which must be specified in the technical passport of the tool.
- Poor contact between spark plugs and high-voltage wire. The gap between the spark plug tip and the wire should be no more than 0.5 mm. If carbon deposits have formed on the candle, it must be cleaned and dried. Experts recommend periodically updating spark plugs, even if the old ones are still working properly.
- Pouring a candle. A large amount of fuel collects between the spark plug electrodes, so if the spark plug is flooded, a spark will not form. To fix such a breakdown, just remove the spark plug and dry it. It would be useful to heat it using a gas burner.
- Carburetor jet or fuel filter is dirty. It is quite easy to clean the gas filter yourself, but it is better to entrust cleaning the carburetor to specialists.
The chainsaw malfunctions at idle speed
The cause of this malfunction may be a dirty muffler. Therefore, in order for the tool to work properly, sometimes you just need to clean the muffler of exhaust tar deposits. Quite often, the air filter in the tool becomes clogged, the air flow into the system becomes clogged, and this leads to the device stalling at idle.
What oil can be used to lubricate the chain on a saw?
Very often when selling a chainsaw, the question is asked: “What kind of oil should I use to lubricate the chain?”
. The most common answer: “Anything except working out.” This is absolutely true, but there are some nuances... For example, sellers often offer to buy chain lubricating oils from chainsaw manufacturers or those designed specifically for these purposes. This usually makes sense at low temperatures or when you are paying close attention to protecting the environment.
In other cases, it is quite possible to replace the chain lubrication oil with any other oil other than working oil. However, there is one more nuance... Users often have a question: “Why is the oil consumption for chain lubrication greater than the fuel mixture? After all, their consumption is related to each other? Here it is worth considering that chainsaw manufacturers calculate the oil consumption for lubricating the chain when filling in their branded oil. And the consumption of any other may differ either less or more.
On many chainsaws, starting from semi-professional ones, it is possible to adjust the oil flow rate for chain lubrication. This is done by adjusting the performance of the oil pump.
If such adjustment is not provided, then the settings come initially from the manufacturer. How to check whether the oil consumption for lubricating the chain on your chainsaw is normal? It is necessary to start the saw, give it gas and bring it to a board, log or other surface that is horizontal. A running chain should scatter oil particles to lubricate the chain and leave a thin, even oil trail.
When to use special chain oil
The use of special oils for chain lubrication will be justified in the following cases:
- You have a new chainsaw under warranty and to preserve it you must use oils recommended by the chainsaw manufacturer. Otherwise, if, for example, the oil pump fails, the repair will not be carried out under warranty. This is especially true for expensive professional chainsaws.
- You respect the environment and prefer not to pollute it again. In this case, oils with the prefix “bio” are suitable.
- When working at critical temperatures.
Let's look at several types of oils from different manufacturers and sort them by price category, environmental friendliness and container volume.
Often the most optimal choice of oil for lubricating the chain and bar will be the simplest oil of the M-8 or M-10 brand. Its characteristics fully satisfy the necessary purposes.
