  • Scope of use

    "Shantui SD 16" can be called a popular equipment at many construction sites. Based on the basic model, versions of the machine have been developed for work in forests, swamps, coal power plants, and landfills.

    The device has become widespread due to its robust design, reliability of components, and low price.

    The bulldozer is used for layer-by-layer digging, moving soils of categories I-IV or loosening rocky or frozen materials. The device performs the first group of work with a straight rotary, spherical or angular blade, the second - with a three-post ripper. In general, special equipment is used for:

    • construction site layouts;
    • construction of embankments;
    • development of excavations and pits;
    • cutting terraces on slopes;
    • digging trenches for foundations and communications;
    • leveling soil poured by other machines;
    • filling ditches, holes, trenches, pits and cavities of building foundations;
    • clearing areas of snow, stones, bushes, stumps, small trees, construction waste.

    Working bodies

    The Shantui SD16 bulldozer comes with a straight, rotary and U-shaped blade. The straight blade has the following characteristics:

    Characteristics

    The tracked SD16 is a machine assembled in the workshops of Shantui Construction Machinery. It is classified as traction class 3 equipment and is positioned as an alternative to expensive American, European or Japanese models.

    The “Chinese” is based on durable, wear-resistant materials, which, together with precision manufacturing, allows it to adequately withstand competition in the special equipment market.

    Engine, fuel consumption

    The bulldozer will be equipped with a Shangchai SC11CB184G2B1 motor as standard. It was copied from the American Caterpillar and assembled under a licensed license. This is an in-line diesel engine with six vertically arranged cylinders. It is cooled by liquid, and fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber.

    Optionally, the SD 16 will be equipped with a Weichai WD10G178E25 diesel engine. It is almost identical to the standard one, but consumes 230 g/kWh of fuel and produces 830 Nm of maximum torque.

    Power transmission, chassis

    The transmission of rotation from the engine to the gearbox input shaft is carried out by a single-stage, single-phase torque converter.

    • The planetary gearbox itself produces 3 speeds for forward movement and the same number in the opposite direction.
    • The stages are switched by a servo drive, which greatly facilitates the control of the equipment.

    It is worth noting that the lubrication of gears and friction pairs in the gearbox is forced.

    Final drives are represented by two-stage gearboxes with spur gears. Lubrication of contact surfaces is carried out by spraying. The main transmission to the gearboxes goes through a bevel pair with circular teeth. This design can withstand heavy loads, creates less noise, but is more difficult to regulate.

    Maneuvering is ensured by a multi-disc, permanently closed rotation clutch. It operates in an oil bath and is activated by a hydraulic drive. Maneuvers are carried out in conjunction with the activation of the floating brake by a band-type rotation clutch, controlled by a pedal with a hydraulic booster.

    Shantui SD16 is a crawler bulldozer. The machine's balance-type suspension provides good stability on uneven surfaces and dampens dynamic vibrations while driving.

    • The caterpillar track rests on 6 rollers, the idle branch is supported by 2 rollers.
    • The caterpillar is driven by a sprocket attached to the output shaft of the final drive. The tension is maintained by the deflection roller.

    The track itself consists of 37 shoes with a width of 510, 560 or 610 mm, depending on the configuration.

    Hydraulics

    Unfortunately, certain difficulties arose in finding performance characteristics for this model. The hydraulic system parameters were no exception. The information offered is taken from the company's English-language resource.

    The hydraulic system is powered by a PAR112 gear pump with a capacity of 227 l/min. The maximum pressure limited by the bypass valve is 14 MPa.

    A working fluid reserve tank with a capacity of 110 liters is installed on the excavator. This volume is enough to drive a pair of cylinders for lifting the knife and one each for tilting the blade and activating the ripper. The internal diameter of the last two is 160 mm, the first - 110 mm.

    The operation of the system is controlled by spool valves connected to multi-position joysticks installed in the operator’s cabin.

    ENGINE

    Shantui SD16 is equipped with 2 types of diesel engines:

    • Shanghai C6121;
    • Steyr WD615T-3A.

    The most common are modifications with the Shangchai C6121 unit, which is also installed on other Chinese equipment. The motor is of high quality and is certified according to the CAT system. The design of the power plant contains a special damper, which increases the reliability and durability of the motor, and also provides additional protection against the ingress of objects from the external environment. The unit is built according to a single-row design with water cooling, a turbocharger and direct injection.

    Shanghai C6121 engine specifications:

    • working volume – 9.73 l;
    • rated power - 160 hp;
    • speed – 1840 rpm;
    • maximum torque – 766 Nm;
    • cylinder diameter – 126 mm;
    • specific fuel consumption – 214 g/kW per hour.

    Steyr WD615T-3A has a similar construction scheme. In terms of characteristics, the engine is almost a complete analogue of the Shangchai C6121. The unit has a power of 120 (160) kW (hp), a maximum torque of 764 Nm and a displacement of 9.7 liters.

    Features of design and operation

    The frame of the machine is made of wear-resistant steel grades. During the manufacture of the frame, welding seams were repeatedly inspected, including by ultrasonic flaw detectors. The integrity of the metal is important to ensure the rigidity and strength of the structure. To protect the power plant from mechanical damage from falling objects, the engine compartment received double protection.

    The bulldozer is unpretentious in maintenance. Although it belongs to the category of tractors of traction class 3, all its components have a simple, understandable design.

    • To repair a machine, you do not need to send it to a service center, and the procedure can be performed even in the field.
    • In many ways, this maintainability was achieved through the introduction of a modular design, when components are completely dismantled for revision or replacement.

    However, some items must be ordered from China, which may slow down the repair process.

    Dimensions

    Three-dimensional modeling made it possible to lighten the model, leaving the dimensions of the bulldozer within the limits necessary to ensure the declared tactical and technical indicators.

    Workplace, controls

    The operator's cabin is made in the form of a hexagonal prism. It appears that the view of the front working area is limited.

    • The windshield is very small, and the pillars of the ROPS cab frame are wide. However, the manufacturer assures that this design is rational for heavy equipment.
    • The basic configuration of the cabin includes a heater and air conditioning.
    • To reduce noise, all non-glazed panels received good sound insulation.
    • An ergonomic Grammer seat with the ability to adjust in 3 planes was installed in the cabin.
    • Joysticks for controlling hydraulic actuators are located under the operator’s right hand, and gear shift, direction change and maneuvering levers are located under the left hand.

    Device

    The Shantui bulldozer has the following main elements:

    • The motor can operate continuously for a long time, consuming little energy. It is four-stroke and equipped with a cooling system that runs on water. This engine is considered one of the most economical in its class. The engine compartment is quite compact; it contains basic components and assemblies that are available for quick and easy diagnostics.
    • Hydraulic controls, valves and cylinders have reliable performance. They provide the most complete control over the basic functions and movements of the equipment.
    • The gearbox does not have steps, but the transmission allows you to set gears without using the clutch. As a result, operating the bulldozer is easy and simple.
    • The chassis is characterized by modular tracks. This design creates the most convenient conditions for the repair and replacement of individual tracks and the entire track system.
    • For the same bulldozer, tracks of different widths can be used, this provides a unique opportunity to use the equipment on a wide variety of soils.

    • The cab gives the operator a wide view. Unique insulating materials protect not only from noise, but also from vibrations that occur during bulldozer operation. Built-in equipment is capable of maintaining a comfortable level of not only temperature, but also humidity. A comfortable driver's seat and maximum proximity of all controls and controls significantly simplify work.

    Description of modifications

    Based on the basic model, the manufacturer produces several modified machines for narrowly targeted use. The Shantui SD16 series is available in several versions:

    • SD16C - for the coal mining industry, has tracks with flat shoes and one flange, and a blade of increased volume;
    • SD16F - the bulldozer is used in logging; its tracks have the same design as the model with the “C” index, but the cabin has additional protection, and the device itself is equipped with a traction winch;
    • SD16R - the machine is used at sorting landfills for storing household waste; a large blade (8.3 m³) and large triangular shoes are installed on it;
    • SD16L is a swamp version, maximally lightweight and with installed wide tracks, having a ground pressure reduced to 27 kPa.

    Transmission

    Shantui SD16 special equipment is equipped with a planetary gearbox with three forward and reverse speeds.

    • The main drive is in the form of a two-stage direct drive gearbox with splash lubrication.
    • The bulldozer gearbox has a multi-plate hydraulic clutch, which is lubricated under pressure.
    • The main drive of the transmission system is represented by a single-stage gearbox, a spiral bevel gear. Lubrication occurs by splashing.
    • The bulldozer steering clutch is oil-based, multi-disc, spring-loaded.
    • Swing clutch brake in an “oil bath”, spring-loaded, free band with hydraulic reinforcement.

    Hydraulic system

    The hydraulic system of this special vehicle consists of 2 parts: the working equipment of the hydraulic system, the hydraulic system for controlling the steering mechanism and gearbox.

    The hydraulic system of the Shantui SD16 bulldozer includes a two-cylinder gear pump, the diameter of each cylinder is 110 millimeters. The maximum pressure in the hydraulic system is 14 MPa. The pump capacity, or discharge flow rate, is 243 liters per minute.

    The hydraulic control system for working equipment is characterized by a maximum operating pressure of 14 MPa (140 kg/cm2). The pressure in the ripper pressure reducing valve is 16 MPa (160 kg/cm2). The hydraulic fluid flow rate is 213 liters per minute (at an engine speed of 1800 rpm.

    A gear pump sucks oil from the oil tank and pushes it to the blade lift and tilt valve (or blade control valve on a dozer with a rotary blade). When the bulldozer is not in operation, the oil leaves the blade lift and tilt valve, the ripper control valve (for special vehicles equipped with a ripper) through the oil filter and returns back to the oil storage tank.

    When the air filter cartridge is clogged, hydraulic oil opens the filter relief valve and simply flows back into the oil tank. When the blade lift and tilt valve operates, the blade rises and lowers, is fixed in a solid or “floating” state, or tilts. When the ripper control valve operates, this working element rises, lowers and is held in the required position.

    A high-quality control valve is mounted in front of the control valves, which serves to prevent shocks during operation of the operating mechanism. The throttle is set to obtain the ideal forward speed of the tilt cylinder.

    A safety valve is also installed, designed to prevent cases of excessive pressure in the system, which occurs due to overloads during soil loosening.

    If there is excessive load during operation, the system pressure can quickly exceed the set operating pressure of 14 MPa, which causes the main unloading valve to open, and the oil flows back to the oil tank through the unloading valve, so that the system is always protected.

    When the direction of the external force coincides with the direction of movement of the piston, a vacuum may form inside the cylinder, and to prevent the formation of a vacuum, a suction valve is mounted. All of the above valves are installed inside the operating equipment of the oil tank.

    By design, the working equipment of the oil tank is of a closed type - in order to prevent possible contamination of the oil.

    Reviews about this model

    From the operating experience of the Shantui SD16 of various modifications (mainly standard and swamp), the following conclusions can be drawn. This is a good special vehicle, although not without its shortcomings. Users cite poor sound insulation of the workplace in the cabin, leaking heater radiators, and rubbing of the hose hose, which causes the blade to skew, as weak points. It is also noted that the Shantui cabin cannot withstand the harsh frosts of the Far North and Siberia: it becomes cool in it.

    Gearboxes often fail due to wear of two rings (and all this already during the non-warranty period). Basically, there are no complaints about the chassis, although, of course, a lot depends on the soil and the driver. There are no problems with diesel engines. Side leaks do happen, especially in winter, but they are not critical; they can be treated by replacing the labyrinth and seals.

    Failures in the starter do occur, but they are infrequent, and only in winter. There have been failures of the hydraulic pump (during the warranty period, manufacturing defects). Sets of necessary consumables and spare parts for Shantui SD16 are much more expensive than for domestic equipment of a similar class.

    Overall, for the price this is a pretty good car.

    Chassis of special equipment

    It is represented by a rotary-type balancing suspension. There are six track rollers on both sides (4 single edge and 2 double edge). The composite track shoes of the Shantui bulldozer are 510 mm wide and have 37 lugs on each side. The track width reaches 203.2 mm.

    Operator's cabin

    To increase the viewing angle and accuracy of the operator's work, the cabin is made in a new geometric hexagon shape. The developers are confident that this design is rational for the Shantui SD16 heavy equipment. The frame is made rigid, which has a positive effect on driver safety.

    To increase the concentration of the person operating the equipment, the entire cabin upholstery is made of sound and vibration insulating material. The standard equipment of the Chinese Shantui bulldozer includes air conditioning and heater. This guarantees normal operation of the operator regardless of the surrounding natural conditions.

    The Grammer chair can be adjusted and placed in a comfortable position, all devices are located very conveniently and within reach. Hydraulics allow you to apply less effort to switch levers. The system itself is equipped with new cylinders and water seals.

    In general, the entire cabin is made ergonomically; the increased level of glazing (360-degree viewing angle) also has a beneficial effect on the general condition of the driver, reducing his level of fatigue.
